Apologies if this is a double post, it just looks like it got eaten.
( @zero-saito ) I love this! One of the reasons why I was upset by Robert cross’ death is because he became a frenemy to Alex. Had he survived the supreme hunter he wouldn’t hesitate to call Alex out or straight up fight him. Man was a legend
Absolutely!! The fact that Cross came in swinging and was unafraid to fight Alex was so good, and the fact that he was helping Alex after the point Ragland and Dana got dropped from the game, I was excited to see what was next. Like, I understand the writing decision to kill of Cross (as the writers were likely using this to further isolate Alex and feed into his paranoia and identity crisis) but honestly, he would've been great as a continuing character. I mean how many characters can say that they took on a Supreme Hunter and actually lived to tell the tale? The number can go up to two. (I'm pretty sure Heller does in the second game but like??? Where was the build up and any sort of emotional attachment to Heller's accomplishments? The game rarely ever feels like it's for or even about Heller. It all just feels like the story is just a series of events rather loosely connected just enough that it explains who Heller is fighting, what, and sometimes even why, but you don't get. A chance to get attached to him. What's the point of learning about Heller being suicidal if it's never brought up again? Why show Heller in the comics showing mercy to fellow marines but then ruthlessly tearing them down in game? Why have him clearly see that BlackWatch is detriment and have him actively fighting them when he drops even considering them to be worth his time once he finds out about his daughter? I'm not even saying that Amaya shouldn't be priority number 1 for him, what I mean is why doesn't he finish what he's started once she's safe? They're still a threat. It's like they introduced a likeable and somewhat rounded character in the comics, then turned around and made him the angry black stereotype. I have--A LOT-- feelings and thoughts about the game, as I was so ready to buy it, and yet Alex Mercer being a villain wasn't the reason I never bought it. Alex Mercer being killed made me cool my jets, ngl, but it was the lack of care they handled James Heller and his story that kept me from buying it. Uhhh, this got long you can ignore it.) But anyways, I really appreciated Cross for how neutral he was towards Alex. Which. Is weird to say? But, he consistently acknowledges Alex as Alex or with he pronouns, he recognizes that Alex is a being with sentience, and that even though he is a virus he's still doing his part (no matter how you play the game) to get rid of Greene and the virus. Like? I feel like there should've been a Dr. Jekyll and Hyde situation with him, y'know? He can still lose the fight and get devoured but his personality and memories remain after Alex steps in the Supreme Hunter the first time, due to the Redlight and Blacklight interacting. He can still have complex feelings about the fact that, despite Alex fighting to kill him he's also the reason he ends up surviving. He certainly would be a great foil or even just a character with similarities going through and familiar struggle with humanity and what it means to them. Idk, he just--he and Heller had the range but they only get to sing to one tune.
Imma say something about a game over a decade old but whatever
I feel like Alex Mercer from [Prototype] would be damn near incapable of having any sort of healthy relationship, before and after Penn Station.
He wouldn't be able to before because he clearly had some sort of superiority complex and he wouldn't be able to afterwards (but he would definitely try) simply because he has to unlearn so much of Alex's previous approach to relationships. His basis would be horribly flawed and there would be little chance for him to get better since only Dana and Dr. Ragland actually give a shit about him.
