How to ditch subscription music apps and build your own library (mostly) for free

This post is brought to you by the most recent update to the Amazon music app which no longer lets me, as a Prime subscriber, download individual songs or albums. I now either have to download “playlists” or pay an extra subscription fee for Amazon music unlimited. Since I was only using Amazon’s app because I didn’t have to pay anything extra, I ultimately decided not to put up with their bullshit and to go back to the old ways, e.g., building my own music library that no corporation can randomly decide to take away from me.

If you grew up in the pre-internet, burgeoning-but-not-ubiquitous-internet, or pre-smartphone era like me, the following steps will be a blast from the past, so this post is not exactly for you. It’s for Kids These Days™ who may not remember a pre-algorithm, pre-subscription service internet in the same way, or just anyone who doesn’t know you can do this. Remember, one man’s time knife is another man’s Chris Fleming.

So, how do you get music for free?

Use your public library

Check out CDs

Rip them using Windows Media Player, which comes standard with windows computers

That’s it. Now you can save and back up the .mp3 files wherever you want, and you have them forever and ever. I recently ripped music from a CD I copied and burned onto a new disc back in high school, uploaded the mp3 files to Google drive, and downloaded them onto my phone. I paid zero dollars for that, and I now have that album forever.

Ok, so how do I do that?

I’m glad you asked.

1. Insert a CD in the disc drive. (I know a lot of new laptops don’t come with a disc drive--I’ll address this later)

2. Go to the Windows start menu and find Windows Media Player. (If you have a mac, use itunes or whatever, I’m sure it’s similar)

3. Find the CD on the menu on the left-hand side of Windows Media Player. It looks like this.

4. At the top of the screen, go to “rip CD”. If you don’t want all of the songs, uncheck the ones you don’t want to rip. It should now look like this.

5. When it’s done, go to your music folder and find the artist and album. Here are the .mp3 files. You can connect your phone directly to your computer to transfer the files, or you can upload them to Google drive or your cloud storage of choice and then download them onto your phone.

6. From there, the .mp3s should load automatically and play in the music player app of your choice. I use Musicolet because it doesn’t have ads.

Is this legal? Honestly, that’s a bit of a grey area. Technically, only the copyright owners can make reproductions of their work barring exceptions for fair use, but the real trouble does not come when you copy a work, but when you redistribute it. If you save this from a hard copy to your own computer or phone, who’s ever gonna know? Basically, it’s legal enough to get away with, and legal enough that no one will care. This is how back in the pre-CD days, people recorded songs off the radio onto cassette tapes, and how my parents saved all of the James Bond movies from a TV movie marathon by recording them to VHS tapes on the VCR.

Is this ethical to the artist? It’s as ethical as checking out their CD to listen to it on a CD player and then return it. The library already purchased their music legally, and checking out the CD to rip it is literally no different than checking out the disc to play it in a CD player. The more times something has been checked out, the more likely the library is to replace it if it wears out and gets ruined.

Will the library get mad at me / figure out what I’m doing? Emphatically no. They don’t give a shit. Checking out a bunch of CDs improves their circulation rates, which is good for your local library system as a whole, because that’s something they bring to their governing bodies to show that people are still using the library and that they still need funding.

What if the library doesn’t have the album I want? You can try getting it through interlibrary loan, requesting the library purchase it (a lot of libraries have forms for that), or just buying that album yourself if you want it that badly. CDs cost roughly $10-$25 each, less if they’re used, which is the equivalent of like 1-2 months of spotify depending on what tier you use. Compare that to having the music you want forever without having to pay a monthly fee.

My laptop doesn’t have a disc drive. Neither does mine. I bought a USB disc player from Amazon for like $20. Your library might also have one they’d let you use, although they might not have ones to check out and take home.

I don’t have a computer. Your library does. They’re free to use, and I can almost guarantee they have PC desktops running Windows. They may not have a disc drive, in which case you can [see last paragraph].

This would be great if I could actually get to the library / afford a disc player / had a phone, etc. Yes, I’m assuming several things here, including that you have a phone, can get to your public library, and (if you refer to the title of this post) that you are the kind of person who can pay for spotify or another streaming app. I’m also American, and I don’t know how well all of this applies to other countries. However, this is the most affordable and most accessible solution out there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t have the time for this and would rather just keep paying for spotify. That’s fine, and I’m honestly not judging you. I buy a lot of pre-cut vegetables from the store because I don’t have the fucking time to peel and chop carrots. My mom would say that’s a waste of money, but I’m paying for the convenience.

Lol I’m just gonna pirate shit. Cool, have fun. Just please keep your pirating to mega-rich artists who are already set for life and not struggling people putting their shit out on soundcloud, ok?

How do I get new music recs without suggestions? Listen to the radio. Look up music you hear in movie soundtracks. Get recs from friends. Go to YouTube (using ublock origin for Firefox so you don’t get ads) and use their algorithm. There are ways beyond the personalized playlist spotify gives you.

This seems like it takes a lot of time and effort. If you have no music to begin with, yeah, then it’s going to take some time to build your library. But, as I keep saying, the benefits are that you get to curate your own experience and that you get to have this music forever. Once you already have most of what you want set up, it’s going to take a lot less effort to add new albums or songs here and there as you discover them. In this modern hellscape of profit-seeking and algorithms, I will keep peddling the value of curating your own experience and getting shit for free.

Random Sokeefitz Headcanons Because What’re You Gonna Do? Stop Me?

keefe got an iphone in the forbidden cities and refuses to let go of it “because elvin music sucks and human music doesn’t, and i didn’t make a bunch of mood playlists to just abandon them!” 

it was quite some time until sophie found out that he’d made playlists dedicated to her and fitz - which she “aww”ed over for, like, a week

they ended up spending a whole day at splendor plains just listening to their favorite songs in his room 

sophie added a bunch of songs to the playlist that he made for her, and they spent hours trying to construct the “ultimate fitz playlist” 

fitz is mostly an acoustic and instrumental type of guy, so he didn’t really get why they were so excited when they showed him the playlists the next day, but he was happy that they were happy (and he had to admit, the vibes were spot on)

sophie and fitz both love talking about human history

for sophie, it’s one of the few subjects that she knows a lot about, and for fitz, he thinks it’s an interesting learning opportunity

they talk for hours about various events

it’s like they’re in their own little world, speaking their own language. mostly because nobody else understands what they’re talking about enough to casually jump into the discussion and they’re too put-off to want to ask them to put them up to speed, but still

since keefe lived in the forbidden cities for a while he knows a decent amount about humans from firsthand experience, but his knowledge is all of how various cultures are like now, not their histories

he’s never bothered to explain that though since sophie and fitz always look and sound like charmed little kids whenever they turn to him with ridiculously specific questions. they share a childish curiosity towards the world that softens their edges in this way that just makes him melt, and whenever he tries to shrug off questions because he has no idea what the answers are (but doesn’t want to admit it), they give him puppy eyes that he couldn’t say no to under any circumstances

so yeah keefe’s google search history is really fuckin’ weird 

but at least he knows the full story behind why that one old dead white dude used 20 something canons for percussion for his symphony instead of drums like a normal person

insomnia’s a bitch so there’s no guarantee of who wakes up first, but on nights where they sleep the recommended amount, it’s usually fitz. he’s a big morning person

keefe is the exact opposite. his partners have to drag him out of bed. if they even manage to un-pry him from curling around their bodies beforehand. mans is a koala, i tell you

in the beginning he felt bad about it, but after being reassured multiple times by his partners that they don’t mind how clingy he is, he has no shame about making them an hour late to work because he persuaded them into giving him extra cuddles

keefe and fitz always snuggle up to someone in their sleep, but sophie doesn’t always do that. don’t get her wrong, she loves the feeling, but sometimes she just needs a starfish break. keefe and fitz have fallen off the bed before because of how far they have to scoot over to ‘give her her space’

fitz holds people’s hands in his sleep. his partners adore it; fitz didn’t even realize it was something he did until sophie pointed it out 

when they actually do get up out of bed and get ready for the day, fitz is almost always the one who makes breakfast 

he has a bunch of recipe books for baked goods. he has revisions where he thinks the recipes could be improved, and sticky notes on his favorite pages

keefe doodles on said sticky notes. one time he forgot to grab a sticky note for what he has drawing in pen and drew on the page. he freaked out because “oh shit that’s not removable fitz is gonna be so mad-”

fitz wasn’t mad. he thought the big mandala keefe had done in the corner of the page was super cool 

so did sophie

now keefe leaves little doodles on any unimportant/unofficial papers they leave out in hopes that it’ll make them smile when they notice

they always do 

ahem getting back on track - the thing that fitz makes the most is panakes pancakes. he made the recipe himself after sophie suggested it and everyone loves them, so it’s a regular thing he makes. also because they’re basically the healthiest elvin food he knows how to make, and he’s trying to cut down on sugar 

since he’s trying to cut down on sugar and sophie misses the variety of textures the human culinary world had to offer, they have a lot of human foods 

fitz doesn’t take sophie and keefe shopping in the forbidden cities anymore because they always get a shitload of stuff they don’t need. mostly containers and containers of oreos that they go through in a week 

once, sophie tried buying out the entire oreo section at walmart. fitz told her that buying out a huge section at one store was way too suspicious and to put most of them back

she did, but then she insisted on dragging them to five other stores to eventually accumulate the amount of oreo packages she was going for

keefe also got a bunch of other junk foods with way too much cholostreol for fitz’s comfort 

fitz literally just wanted to grab steak seasoning ‘cause it tasted good with some other veggies at home. that was all he wanted. and then he came home with seven bags of stuff he didn’t need

sophie has a habit of skipping meals when nobody tells her, “hey, you gotta eat something,” since she gets so consumed in assignments from various sources. hence why fitz meal plans and sends his partners with lunches (and sometimes even dinners, in sophie’s case, if he knows she’s gonna be at a long meeting or an overnight mission) like they’re first graders

keefe got her a lunchbox from the same company that made her sparkly unicorn journal that we saw in exile from when she was, like, five. it’s just as ridiculous as the journal was 

keefe and fitz laughed their asses off when sophie was so embarrassed by it that she literally painted the whole thing black so the rest of team valiant (mostly stina) would stop (lightheartedly) teasing her about it 

sophie’s super protective of her boys. she’s stepped in and told off strangers harrassing her boyfriends on multiple occasions, no hesitation, no regard for the whispers and eyes that follow her for a good while afterwards

it makes keefe’s day because !! someone cares about me enough to stand up for me!; it makes fitz’s day because wow, you’re so brave and i’m so lucky that you’re here for me 

they never say that stuff out loud, but the gestures they show her in return - from surprising her with fettuccine made from scratch for dinner after a long day dealing with the council to leaving extra kisses on her skin and holding onto her for just a little longer than usual - show their appreciation clearly enough

fitz has a thing for scooping up his partners in his arms and spinning them around when he’s really excited

but not to the extent that sophie does

it’s an easy thing for fitz to do, since he’s tall and got muscles, but it’s a lot more of an effort for sophie. a lot more of an achievement, since she’s literally an entire head shorter than fitz and not that much further up on keefe 

like, she lifted weights for months just so she’d be able to say she could carry not only keefe, but also fitz 

it was mostly to rub in keefe’s face that he’d lost a bet they’d made that she was too short to carry fitz around and owed her twenty bucks at first, but as time wore on she just liked the surety of having her bfs secure in her arms, and not in danger

keefe loves it when either of his partners pick him up and carry him around. it’s its own grade of attention that scratches his brain in a way he didn’t know he wanted just right 

i should probably stop now but i’m gonna add a few more things ‘cause you can’t stop me

forehead kisses are a Big Thing for them. it’s part of their daily routine. it’s mostly fitz giving and keefe and sophie receiving, but not always. they’re all happy about forehead kisses no matter what role they play in it, though 

hand kisses are also a Big Thing for them. moreso for keefe and fitz than either of them with sophie, but it’s still a thing 

sophie gets really flustered whenever either of her bfs (mostly fitz) kiss the back of her hand or her palm, but she doesn’t mind being a walking puddle of goo for the next few hours too much

keefe, on the other hand, relishes it. he’s overly dramatic about it when people are around for the laughs. but when it’s just him and fitz (or sophie - sophie doesn’t kiss hands very often, but when she does, it’s on his palm to put the cherry on top of a tender moment and keefe dies), he lets the joke-y mask fall. he lets the soft smile overtake his face. he lets himself give into the urge to pull fitz closer - for a long hug or a sleepy, loving kiss, depends on the day - he lets himself feel vulnerable and loved

when fitz eventually pulls away, keefe always draws a heart over the middle of his palm (where fitz kisses his hand every morning) as a physical reminder that this love is reciprocated and real  

and i have even more headcanons where this came from but i don’t think today is the day to see if i can max out the character/word limit with headcanons lol

8 Queer Tips to Get Through the Holidays

The Holidays can be a really tough time for queer and trans people, especially for those of us who come from religious families. Whether this season means being alone or whether it means going back to be with your family of origin, putting plans in place to help you cope and get through the holidays is essential. Here are some things that have helped us! Feel free to add your ideas in the comments.

Figure out friends you can call & text

When you’re stressed or scared or your family says or does something messed up and you need advice or just to vent, have a friend or two on standby that you can reach out to

Set boundaries

You are allowed to take care of yourself. You are allowed to take care of yourself. You are allowed to take care of yourself. Too often we get the message that as LGBT it’s our responsibility to always be “on” — to always advocate for the cause, or to behave “properly,” or to keep the peace. We’re told that it’s our job to endure demonizing sermons and degrading misgenderings in the name of “dialogue” or whatever. But we don’t have to. We can set and maintain boundaries that keep us safe, happy, and healthy. You don’t have to go to the Christmas service at your awful childhood anti-gay church. You don’t have to explain how you know you’re a woman on the drive to your aunt’s house. Communicating your boundaries to your family ahead of time might work well for you or you can decide on them yourself and enforce them if folks bump up against them.

Make time to be alone

These days, my family is wonderfully supportive and still, I need some time to sneak away and just be myself. Spending time with lots of people can be exhausting and families that are not supportive can be extra exhausting. Make time to sit in bed and read a book; to get outside and go for a walk, run, or bike ride; or even to take a nap.

Celebrate the holidays with your chosen family too

We’re told that spending time with our families of origin is the only “proper” way to spend the holiday. In some cities, like New York City, where I live, “Orphan Christmas” is a thing… friends who aren’t going home to their families gather together to celebrate. But getting together with close friends to celebrate a holiday shouldn’t need a qualifier… it can just be Christmas, or Thanksgiving, or Chanukah, or Kwanza. I consider many of my close friends to be part of my chosen family. We’re there for each other unconditionally. We’ve gone through periods of living together, sharing our food and belongings, and even sharing our money. We take each other to doctors visits and we help pay for each other’s surgeries. Remember to celebrate holidays with the people in your life who are supportive (even if that means hopping on a Google Hangout because they don’t live nearby).

Sign up for a Twitter account

It’s been hugely helpful for me to be able to log into twitter and have a whole bunch of people I can reach out to. I use Twitter as a place to vent, to be around likeminded people, to ask for prayer, or to find stuff to make me laugh.

Journal

I love being able to pull out my journal and just write. It’s a place where I don’t have to make sense. I don’t have to worry about being petty or angry or lashing out. I can write whatever I’m feeling and I always feel better afterwards.

Have music and movies that make you feel good

Make a playlist of music you love and that makes you feel awesome. If you need to, step away for a bit and listen to your favorite song. Bring some DVDs to the Christmas party and put them on for distraction. Give yourself some breathing space.

Create an exit strategy if you can

Have a friend call with an emergency. Say that you have to leave at a certain time. Give yourself permission to leave if things get too intense. You don’t have to stay super late. You can stay in a hotel instead of sleeping on your parents’ couch. Do what you need to do to give yourself the out you need.

Any advice for going about having a bandcamp, and how to get your instrumentals out there?

Peace! This is going to be long so bear with me lol

I always recommend bandcamp to people! Its a good way for fans to stay up to date on artists and their music. As an artist, you can make a subscription if you want also so people can get exclusive content. You can sell any merch and physical copies of music on there and there is an option for fans to pay what they want. That way if they are feeling extra appreciative, you can get extra for your releases which is good! A good strategy is to release on bandcamp a week or two before an album/single is set to drop on streaming services. That way it gives people more of an incentive to be supportive.

Speaking of streaming services, there is DistroKid, a distribution company that I use. With them, you can upload your music to MANY streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, iTunes, Google Play, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Deeper, etc. Too many to list off the top of my head. If you want your music worldwide, you will need to sign up with a distro. They have a 20 dollar a year plan for individuals and also a 40 dollar plan which is what i have. Its worth it. *Going through a distro platform is the only way to get your music on Spotify Editorial playlists. After you sign up with a distro, get access to your Spotify for Artists page. Then upload a release to drop 4-6 weeks ahead. Once its uploaded, check your Spotify for Artists "Upcoming" page daily for your release to show up. Once its comes up, you can choose a track to submit for consideration*

Also marketing is key!!!! I still lack in that a bit but its a learning process. You have to get out on social media and promote your music. Make clips, take pictures of your gear, stories, experiences, etc. You have to build a presence on social media. Its a must in this day and age. I dont like that aspect of marketing tbh but its VERY important.

You can make accounts in all social media platforms, but you don't necessarily have to focus on ALL of them at once. Also there are apps out there that let you schedule posts on a bunch of social media pages at once. Me, id just rather go through the hassle and post myself in each social media platform. Since in each platform, I have a different base of followers and each experience is a little different but generally the same (like on here I post alot less serious but on twitter im involved in the music community there so i tend to post more professionally on there). Find what works best for you in that regard.

Another big one is user-based playlist placements! Depending on what style of beats you make, there are alot of people who run user based playlists on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Try finding people who are taking submissions for their playlists on Reddit, Discord, or Twitter. Sometimes i would search something like "Lofi spotify playlist submissions" on reddit/google/Twitter and switch to the most recent posts.

*Please note that alot of these user playlists have deadlines for submissions but also update in weekly, biweekly, and monthly intervals. You can add them on their respective social media platforms and turn on their notifications to stay up to date on when submissions open again*

Also if you have money to spend....FACEBOOK/INSTAGRAM ADS. For example, i spent $70 last week for an ad on IG with a beat and a link to my page and bio. Those 70 dollars got me more followers (from different areas of the world), decent amount of album purchases, and lots of new ears onto my music! Its an investment but its something to look into and research!

Song stuck in my head: The end credits to Legacy of the Wizard (which is SUCH a jam, thank you for enlightening me @jessicafish) Following and followers: 227 (goodness just looking at that number is stress-inducing) and...104?! When the HECK did you all get here??? I think just last summer I was happily floating about in the 50′s. Anyways, to anyone I have not said hello, hello! Hope you enjoy your stay, and I am sincerely sorry if you expected Quality Original Content, or even just regularly scheduled other people’s content. Sadly, neither of these things tend to happen here. 

Amount I sleep: During the school year it’s usually anywhere between 30 minutes and 6 hours (DON’T EVEN START BUBBLES YOU HAVE NO RIGHT), usually landing in the 3/4 hour ranges if I’m smart about it, but now that I am on Unofficial Break, it’s usually at least around 6 hours (except today was 3 because Avatar is an excellent show and the weirdos in this house have regularly scheduled breakfast at 9-something every morning). Sadly my sleep schedule can only be forced to tolerate normalcy for so long before careening back in the other direction, so we’ll see if this is just a blip or if we’re back to normal mid-Atlantic Ocean hours!

Lucky number(s): I wouldn’t say these are necessarily favorite numbers, but I do like 2 and 9. But come to think of it, second attempts at Official Things do tend to go better for me than first attempts, so maybe there’s some merit there after all! Dream Job: Don’t think I’m really cut out for dreaming anymore, haha (unless you are a theoretical future employer in which case I am Extremely Full of Ambition and Passion). The bed-adjacent metaphor has been made, and not to brag, but I can sleep on pretty much any surface. Currently studying my Not Favorite aspect of STEM (was there ever a favorite or did I just like being good at things sometimes) and learning how to People™ properly (and also learning a gazillion convoluted drug names like what the heck dude, did you just fall asleep on your typewriter coming up with these), so I’ll take whatever place hires me and pays me enough not to depend on my parents for everything, I suppose. In an ideal world, that would entail a job where I could make friends, and even more importantly, a job where my shortcomings would not cause Massive and Irreparable Harm, but I don’t think this line of work really meshes with that last one, so I guess I’ll either have to get my shit together™ extremely soon or fake my death, adopt an alias, and flee to a completely new place with no ties whatsoever before trying to get another, less high stakes job. 

(Though I guess, less cynically, I like helping people well enough? And stories are fun! Maybe there could’ve been something with that. Not that there still can’t be, mind, but there’s still a long way to go between Here and There)

Instruments? Started playing the violin when I was 9 years old moved on to the viola at 12 (stopped playing 16 because my teacher was a sexist idiot) with the help of my friends I taught myself how to play the flute at 13 (our band teacher didn't know how to play the flute, so the whole flute section was just winging it... again, he was an idiot)… taught the band teacher how to play the fife when the school got a bunch donated when I was about 15. (It was the first time I'd ever seen a fife and I learned it on my own in an afternoon, but it was beyond the capacity of a man in his 50s who had taught band for 20 years to figure out)

I'm legally blind. I just feel like it's going to be something most people on the internet don't know about me. And the blind community is so often shoved under the bus I always want to make sure it's seen in some way shape or form. I was born with cataracts, and ocular albinism (and possibly retinas pigmentosa That one is hard to pinpoint but it runs in my family so I keep an eye on it) I went to the Arkansas school for the blind, lived on campus from age 9 to 16 until we moved closer to the school, which was one reason Harry Potter really caught my attention growing up. I've had two major eye surgeries, and one laser surgery (I’ll most likely need more as I get older and the cataracts keep growing back), and I really, probably, need to start using a cane....

Favorite Authors:  Robin Hobb is hands down my favorite. Please read Realm of the Elderlings and come yell at me about them!!

Fave animal sounds: For some reason my cousin and I were curious about what peacocks sound like one night and looked it up and now the thought of peacocks warbling always makes me so happy cuz of how funny we found it when bored and hyper that one night.

Aesthetic: Oh man...Dark Academia, is one. Though I usually dress more grunge for someone who is slightly too young to have lived through the grunge era. Also I love bright colors. Here’s my current list of witch apps. I will add and adjust as needed.

I have made a list of IOS apps that I use for my craft. I plan to add more and if you have any you’d like to try or know of please let me know. Thank you and enjoy.

Tarot

Golden Thread Tarot:

Pros: This is a great app for daily reading and to learn different parts of tarot. They also have other types of readings like past, present and future.

Cons: You are give the cares and have to do the reading for yourself so the outcome can be anything.

Tarot+:

Pros: This app is great for newbies. It shows you the cards and give you a reading. It also has a variety of reading for all areas of your life.

Cons: It does ask you to upgrade every time I open it.

Studying and Note taking

Quiznet:

Pros: This a great app for studying. It has a variety of study guides. You can test out your knowledge. It also offers classes so you can do a week long study.

Cons: This app is person powered. That being said you do need to do other research on what you’re studying. However if you have a general idea it’s a great option

Google Keep:

Pros: This is app is a better version of apple notes. It keeps everything together and is great for on the go note taking. You can also search for notes.

Cons: This app is a basic note taking app but if you are not looking for anything fancy it’s great.

Airtable:

Pros: This is a database app. It’s nice because you can add a number of categories. They have different kind of databases. I am currently using the study guide template for my herb list. They also have a website so you can use it on as computer as well.

Cons: The app doesn’t have a share option only the website . Although you don’t have to put in the categories more than once you do have to add all other information, so it’s still time consuming but other than that it’s a solid app and website.

Calendar and Moon Cycles

The Moon:

Pros: This app is great for following the moon cycle. It shows you percentage of moon and when the new and full moon are in the month. It also shows you with a compass where the moon is in the sky.

Cons: That being said it only shows the current month with free mode.

Wicca Calendar:

Pros: This apps shows a current yearly calendar of Wiccan holidays. It has a countdown to the next holiday. It also comes equipped with a glossary of common Wiccan terms and the current moon phase.

Cons: It focused mostly on Wicca. However if you can get past that it has a bunch of information.

Spells

Spellcaster:

Pros: This app has a couple different tools for your craft. The free option include tarot reading, a spell book and a daily horoscope. You can also purchase options like rune reading, rock guide and witch stickers for 99 cents to 4 dollars.

Cons: It is a very condensed list of spells but good for basics.

Wicca App:

Pros: This apps carries a large list of spells. It is great for on the go spellcasting. It also has a few books such as the Gardenerian book of shadows. As well as a glossary of terms and herbs.

Cons: Again it’s more Wiccan centered but it has a lot of great but information.

Crystals

Stone:

Pros: This is a crystal app. It has a large selection of crystals. It gives the meaning of the crystal, use of the crystals and a summery:

Con: You have to know what the crystal your looking for is or it won’t be much help.

Music and Podcasts

Amazon Music:

Pros: Amazon music is a great music service. It has an Alexa option so you can search with just your voice. It has a huge variety of music and you can also play the music on Roku. They have regular, family and student plans. Prices range from 5 dollars to 12 dollars.

Cons: This is a paid service. However they do have a one month trial if you want to try it

Insight timer:

Pros: This a great meditation and sleep app. It has mindfulness relaxation with talking as well as just music. You can set a meditation timer and it will stop and start with a bell.

Cons: If you’re like me you will fall asleep because it’s so soothing.

Apple Podcasts:

Pros: There are plenty of witchy podcasts out there for all people. You can save your podcasts and it’s keeps track of recent listened to episodes. You can also download podcasts to listen on the go.

Cons: It is only apple podcasts. Also if you don’t keep track of what’s playing it will replay old episodes.

Spotify:

Pros: Spotify is another music app. I prefer it over amazon music because it has a lot more underground music. It also has a lot of witchy playlists. If you’re looking for ritual music I highly suggest it. They have regular, family and student plans. Prices range from 5 dollars to 12 dollars. Also right now you can get Hulu with it for no extra charge.

Cons: It is a paid service but from what I’m getting for the price I can’t complain.

Books!

BookMyne, Overdrive, Hoopla:

Pros: All these apps work with your local library to help you rent books and e-book. BookMyne allows you to search your local library database and reserve book. It also keeps track of your books. Overdrive and hoopla use your library card to provide you with e-books, movies and shows. If you are looking for a cheap/free option or live in an area with a big library I highly suggest.

Cons: You need a library card to access the content.

Scribd:

Pros: If you don’t have a local library or a library card you can get Scribd. Scribd is a paid service. For 9 dollars a month you can get access to a database of books. Many I have not found in my library or on internet databases. It also includes audiobooks, articles, magazines and sheet music.

Cons:It is a paid service.

Food

All recipes and Tasty:

Pros: I do a lot of kitchen witchery. All recipes and tasty are great for finding recipes. You can search by specific dietary needs or just search by what you have.

Cons: These are not actual kitchen witch apps. You have to add your intent. They are a good jumping off point though.

Mighty Tea:

Pros: This is a very cute tea timer. In this app you can search a variety of teas. It gives you times to seep the tea. As well as temperature and how much water. You can save your favorite tea.

Cons: To hear the timer you need to have the sound on. Doesn’t work on vibrate.

Herbs and plants

Herbalist, About Herb:

Pros: These are two great on the go Herb guides. It has information on safety for herbs. The plants are also in alphabetical order so it’s easy to find.

Cons: About Herb shows the more scientific side of the herbs but it has a lot of information.

Happy Plant:

Pros: Are you like me and always forget to water your plants you need this app. This app allows you to set a watering schedule. It keeps track of how many days you have water your plants so you can know if you missed a day.

Cons: You can only have three plants unless you upgrade which is 2.99 a year which isn’t bad. Also when you selected to water them it does offer to take a current picture of it. This can get anyone because it does it every time.

Picturethis:

Pros: This is an app to help identify plants. It gives you a map of where local plants have been found and how close they are to you.

Cons: It doesn’t give you exact results but a few options.

Spoonie Witch

Yeah, I had headphones on and was dancing while sitting in my chair and working, teehee!

In addition to what I’ve done at the personal level, I’ve also created and work with others on several fan projects. Bear with me for a minute while I toot my own horn, eh? 😜
