Twilight Warriors - Chapter 4
Warriors takes the older members of the Chain to a tavern in his Castle Town. Wars doesn't have the best time.
Unfortunately because he's one of my favourite boys, Warriors is usually the target of my whump fics.
A bit of smutt at the beginning but it doesn't carry on in this one, though drinking is a theme and drugs are mentioned. Wars struggling with inner thoughts. (Sorry Link)

It was true the realities of having fun on the road, during this gruelling and sometimes infuriating journey, were often out of reach. Sky and Hyrule in particular often tried to boost morale in the evenings around the campfire. Sky would play his harp or Hyrule would suggest games of his own invention. However, more often than not the Chain were nursing wounds, struggling with sleepless nights, or generally feeling homesick. Others, struggled in different ways.
"I can't wait to get you into a real bed," Twilight huffed into Warriors ear, his fingers deep in Warriors ass.
"Mmm, fingering me in the woods not good enough for you now Rancher?!" Wars sighed.
His trembling fingers gripped the trunk of the tree as Twilight changed his angle.
"Oh fuck!" Wars uttered shakily.
"Cum for me my love, I wanna fuck you properly so bad!" Twi grunted, resting his head against Warriors shoulder as he pushed a third finger into his ass.
Wars' gasp caught in his throat as he came. His back arched as Twilight removed his fingers and wrapped his arms around his lover. Twi hugged Wars against himself and let out a long sigh.
"I guess patrol is over for tonight, I'm on first watch," Wars murmured.
He slowly untangled himself from Twilight and rearranged his clothing. Twi noticed Wars' scarf had disappeared from his neck and quickly set about searching for it. In the evening gloom the forest was cast in shadows. Though the faint glow of the campfire was still visible through the brush a short walk away. That was a rule they had established early in their relationship. No matter how badly they wished to be alone, they would never leave their brothers undefended or in danger. Keeping the glow of the campfire in sight kept them both reassured that if something were to happen, they would at least hear any shouts through the trees.
"Here you go Wars," said Twi, as he found and picked up Warriors scarf.
"Thanks."
Twi plucked off a dead leaf before Wars took the scarf and looped it once around his neck, fixing it in place again with his silver brooch.
"I know Zelda gave you the scarf, but did she give you that too?" Twi asked, pointing at the brooch on Warriors shoulder.
"No, it was a gift from my first commanding officer upon being named Captain. He said that whether I got the promotion because I was the hero or not, he said I deserved it on my own merits. This pin was his way of making sure I remembered that. Of reminding me that, even though, I am who I am, the hero isn't everything I am."
"Definitely not, you're an excellent lover too!" Twilight asserted, leaning in to peck Warriors cheek.
"Hmm, I guess you're a pretty good authority on that!" Wars chuckled.
"Course I am. And I don't know if it means anything to you, but I couldn't care less that you're a hero too. You're wonderful Link, I'd love you in any time, in any Hyrule." Twilight's voice dropped as he leaned in to kiss Wars again.
When Twi drew back Wars fixed him with a stare which captured his gaze.
"Do you really mean that?"
"Course I do. Why would I say somethin I don't mean?" Twi frowned, confused that Wars seemed to have misunderstood him.
"Sorry, I just... I'm still getting used to the idea of someone loving me for just being me." Wars replied, dropping his gaze slightly.
"Don't apologise to me Link," Twi insisted, tilting Wars' chin up to look him in the eye again. "You can be whoever you want to be with me."
Wars lunged forwards and planted a passionate kiss to Twilight's lips. He pushed his tongue into Twi's mouth and moaned against him. Instead of drawing away, Wars pressed his forehead against Twilight's.
"Thank you Link," Wars whispered.
***
Castle Town in Warriors time was a sprawling metropolis, a far cry from the smaller towns and villages the rest of the Chain was used to. But Wars had his favourite parts of town. The quieter corners, places where knights rarely went and where the locals always had a smile and a 'goodeven' Sir', to bestow.
Once he'd settled the chain at an Inn they had visited before, Wars suggested that he and Twilight go out for a drink. Unfortunately they were overheard by Sky and Wild who expressed their desire to join them. Wild invited Legend and Time, who instructed Hyrule to stay at the Inn and keep an eye on Four and Wind.
Four made his feelings about being told to stay with the other youngsters well known, before stalking off towards his room.
"I'll give everyone's gear a look over," he remarked. "Since you philistines always neglect your weapons!"
"Hey!" Sky retorted, gripping the Master Sword a little tighter before he passed it over to Four. "Take that back."
"Sorry Chosen, I know you love Fi. I was talking about the others, mostly!"
After making sure Legend had left all of his weapons at the Inn, Wars lead the way to one of his favourite haunts. A small tavern on a side street just off one of the main boulevards. He noted there were a few more soldiers on the streets these days. Not on duty or patrolling the city, just men on leave from the army. He hoped the tavern wouldn't be too crowded.
Time's imposing figure and probably the markings on his face, cut the group a path to the bar. Where a middle aged couple of women stood serving drinks. One smiled at Time as he announced he'd be paying for the first round of drinks for himself and his friends.
Sky and Legend found a darts board on a wall near the bar, and set about challenging two locals to a match. Time sat with Twilight at a table in the corner in deep conversation. Wild, meanwhile, was talking with the barmaids about their menu. Wars therefore found himself alone at the bar, tankard of ale in his hand and a cheerful smile on his face. He'd decided to leave his scarf and armour at the Inn. He hated it when his scarf got dirty needlessly, and his armour was a nuisance unless it was necessary.
So when a young man with neatly cut chestnut hair sat down at the bar beside Wars, he was a little glad of the company.
"Evening," he sighed, as he gestured for a drink to the barmaid. "You on leave too? Or have you got out of the army altogether? Several of my brothers have gone back to their farms and families all over Hyrule."
"Not you though..?" Wars asked, raising an eyebrow as he glanced over his new drinking companion. Leaving a gap for him to fill in his name.
"Ross. And nah, city life for me, always has been. What about you, you don't look like the type to run off into the countryside!" The man remarked, taking his ale from the barmaid with a greatful nod and passing over handful of rupies in return.
"I'm torn, I grew up here in Castle Town, but I'm fond of life on the road too," Wars replied, taking a sip of his ale.
"Hmm, you here with anyone friend?"
"My brothers are, around. Somewhere."
Wars turned his gaze around the room, finding most of his friends where he last saw them. Time and Twilight somehow huddled closer than before.
"So not out on a date then?" The young man reiterated, quirking an eyebrow. "On the pull maybe. Handsome guy like you must have to fight them off with a stick! If you don't mind me saying so. I don't wanna pry too much."
"No, I'm not really looking for anyone. Sorry." Wars replied.
He gave the man an apologetic smile before turning his body away from him and returning his attention to his drink. Wars hoped that he might be left alone to enjoy the rest of his night in peace. That was not to be the case however.
"I'm sorry mate, look, let me buy you another drink," the man insisted, waving the barmaid over again.
He insisted on buying another round for the two of them and stopped asking intrusive questions. After Ross passed Wars his fresh tankard, their talk turned back to the war and the places they had served. It was clear to Wars that either his companion didn't know who he was, or was doing a good job of pretending he didn't. But in some ways it was nice to talk to someone about the war who had actually been there. As much as he loved all his brothers, their experiences were very different to his.
As he neared the bottom of his fresh pint Wars found himself smiling. He was getting to like his new friend, he'd even forgotten why he'd tried to turn him away earlier.
"... and then I told him, you can make me do as many pushups as you like Sir, but I'm not scrubbing the bogs!"
Wars' laugh rang out around the tavern, startling those nearby. His companion laughed along with him, reveling in Wars' mirth. He placed a firm hand on Warriors shoulder, squeezing gently. Wars found the contact both comforting and foreign. But something else still felt off. His memory was growing ever more hazy. He knew he had come to the tavern with someone, most likely his brother's. But he couldn't remember what had happened to them. Why weren't they with him. Why was he with this stranger?
"You have a gorgeous laugh my friend," Ross observed, before downing the last of his pint.
"It's been a long time since I've been able to relax and laugh," Wars sighed, those gaps in his memory still niggling at him.
"How about you come back to my place with me, I could help you relax some more?"
Wars' groggy mind quite liked the sound of that idea. Relaxing was a hard thing to do with so many adolescent men around all the time. His usually logical brain should have told him to question being taken somewhere he didn't know. But that part of Warriors brain had been switched off. He didn't know how, but he wasn't worrying about it just then.
"Come on, I've got Gerudo whiskey I've been saving for a memorable occasion," Ross added.
The hand on Warriors shoulder slipped down his back and onto his upper thigh. Wars' breathing hitched and he hiccuped as the hand moved closer and closer to his crotch. The touch brought a little of his mind back to itself and Wars gasped.
"I er...! I'm not sure we should... Please, I think..."
"Shh, don't think. Just come with me," he insisted, leveling his face close to Wars' so he could feel his breath.
Warriors shook his head, which felt dizzy and his head protested the motion. How had he got so drunk so quickly? He'd only had two pints. Wars was many things but he knew he wasn't a lightweight. He tilted his tankard to stare into it's depths. Wars frowned at the residue of some kind of powder at the bottom. His stomach turned.
"What did you put in my drink?" He asked, trying to sound firm but slurring his words. Though he managed to add a little volume.
"I just want you to relax babe." The man insisted, as he rubbed at Warriors thigh.
"Wars!" Twilight practically growled, suddenly very close by. "Are you okay?"
Twilight had cottoned onto Warriors distress and quickly wove his way across the room to his side. He had a hand on Warriors shoulder as he stared daggers at the man sitting beside him.
"Who are you?" Asked the stranger.
"My brothers call me Twilight. My brother Warriors here asked you a question, and I didn't much like your answer. So I'm gonna ask you again, did you put something in his drink?"
With Twilight glaring fixedly at him, Twi expected the man to back down, maybe even apologise and make a quick exit. That would have been the smart thing to do. The right thing. But Twilight was quickly going to learn, this man was neither smart, nor good.
"I just wanted to help him relax, he seemed like he could do with having some fun. It's all good my friend. Now do us a favour and let us get back to our conversation."
"That, was not the smartest thing you could have said just then," Legend remarked, as he appeared at Twilight's right side.
"Alright kid back off, the grownups are trying to have a conversation here."
Legend was about to let a flurry of curse words fly from his mouth that would even put their sailor to shame. But Twilight intervened before he got the chance. In one punch he connected with the man's jaw, knocking Ross from his stool and sending him sprawling across the floor of the tavern.
Table legs scraped across the floor and somewhere someone dropped a glass, smashing it. Silence descended as did a thick tension. No one moved, except the man who was trying to get his feet back under himself, while rubbing at his jaw.
"I'd stay down if I were you," Twilight warned, his voice hard and set as he fought against the urge to hit the man again.
"Twi, what's going on?" Wars asked in a small confused voice.
"Twilight's just teaching this low life some manners Captain," Legend replied nonchalantly, as he stood over the man on the ground.
"Hey now!" One of the women behind the bar exclaimed. "We don't want any trouble in here. You take your business outside or we'll be calling the guards." She warned.
"Wait, did you call him Captain?" The man asked, leaning against the bar in order to haul himself to his feet.
"Captain!" Wars hiccuped, giving everyone a little salute.
"Fuck me!" The man sighed, wide eyed as he stared at Wars with this new revelation.
Before he could say another word, Time and Sky were behind him. Time's fist firmly curled around his collar, as he began yanking him unceremoniously towards the door.
"That's definitely not going to happen. Now I'd keep your moth shut from now on if you know what's good for you," Time grunted, pushing open the door of the tavern with Sky hot on his heels.
"Is he okay luv?" The other barkeep, who had been conversing with Wild asked.
"Asshole put something in his drink," Twi replied grufly. He turned Wars slightly to get a better look at his face.
Warriors eyes were droopy and he felt limp in Twilight's arms. It was difficult to judge weather Wars looked like he was about to throw up, or to fall asleep. Though of course both options were a possibility.
"He'll not be comin back in here again, mark my words!" The woman declared. "My wife's got a pretty good cure for this sort of thing though. Mary, can you grab the tonic. We've got a poor soul here who's having a rough night."
"Who's having a rough night?" Wars asked, looking around at the three boys who were still standing around him.
"It's okay Wars, Time and Sky are dealing with him," Wild assured him, though it didn't really answer Wars' question.
He shrugged and turned back to the bar where a softly smiling woman was handing him a shot glass filled with deep red liquid.
"Here, drink this up hun. It'll help clear your head. Then I suggest your friends help take you home."
"We'll make sure he's safe. Thank you ma'am," Legend insisted with a nod.
Wars stared dubiously at the drink, but after a little encouraging from Twilight, he downed it in one.
"Blagh!" He coughed, "tastes like someone mixed red potion with beetroot and tomato juice!"
"You're not far off," Mary chuckled. "How do you feel now?"
Wars thought hard about that. The holes in his memory had disappeared and the fog clouding his brain had dispersed a little. He still felt a little lightheaded and fuzzy around the edges. But mostly he just felt sad.
"Not great ma'am," was all he could say.
"Well, you seem coherent enough. Can you walk?"
Wars put that to the test and pushed himself off the bar stool. The others backed up to give him some space. Although he was wobbly he announced that, yes, he could walk just fine.
"Thank you for the tonic ma'am, what do I owe you?" Wars asked.
"Tisc, nothing luv. Call it my apology to you for that piece of scum and what he tried to pull. On our hero none the less."
"You know who I am?"
"Course I do luv, and if I'd seen what that piece of work was doin sooner, I'd have hit him harder than you friend here." She insisted. "You will look after him won't you?"
"You have my word miss," Twilight nodded, already looping an arm round Warriors back to support him.
"Well make sure he gets back safely," Wild added.
The four of them left the tavern in more subdued spirits than when they had entered. Wars swayed as he walked, leaning heavily on Twilight. Wild and Legend stayed close by, not that they were expecting more trouble, but they attempted to shield Wars from view of passers by as much as possible.
"You smell good Twi," Wars suddenly announced. "You smell like autumn and fresh hay," he elaborated.
Legend snickered and shot Twilight a questioning look. Twilight just shrugged and endeavoured to hold Wars up straighter.
"You smell like ale Cap," Twi responded. "So how about we get you washed up and into bed?"
"Are you gonna come with me?" He asked, not bothering to whisper.
Twilight's cheeks flushed, and he hoped that the dimly lit streets would help hide his embarrassment.
"We can share a room if you like Wars," Twi replied, trying to keep his voice impassive. "I'm sure the others won't mind."
"- like snuggling with you. Didn't like that man from before. He was rude," Wars pouted.
"That's not what I would have called him," Legend scoffed. "The fact that he tried to do that to you! I could have strangled him."
"I didn't think you cared so much about Warriors Lege," Wild remarked.
As they turned the corner the Inn finally came into view. Wars must have recognised where they were because he seemed to pick up the pace of their amble.
"Yeah well, I don't like it when people try to mess with my family. I can call him a self-aggrandizing prick all I want. But Hylia help anyone else who tries it on."
Wild and Twilight laughed at the hypocritical nature of the veteran, and Wars joined in, though he didn't know exactly what they were laughing at.
Before they reached the door to the Inn, Sky and Time appeared from a side street to their left.
"You boys alright?" Time asked with one of his characteristic frowns.
"Barkeep gave Wars some tonic but he's still not quite with it yet," Twi explained.
"What did you do with him?" Legend asked pointedly.
"Found some guards on duty and handed him over for disciplinary action. I mentioned Link's name and they practically fell over themselves offering to help." Time explained, hands on hips as he surveyed Warriors state.
"Nice that some people around here still respect their war hero!" Wild tutted.
"Shame you didn't teach the piece of filth a lesson yourselves," Legend scoffed.
"Who says we didn't," Sky remarked.
Legend noticed then that Sky was flexing and massaging his right hand. His dominant hand. His fighting hand. Perhaps the bastard had been taught a lesson after all.
None of them said anything more about the misadventure as they entered the Inn and peeled off to their rooms. Time asked Twi if he wanted any help with Wars, but Twilight insisted he had everything in hand. After bidding his predecessor goodnight, Twilight helped Warriors out of his clothes and boots. Then quickly helped to wash Wars' face. Twi sat Wars down on the edge of one of the two beds, then knelt down in front of him.
"You're frowning," Wars observed.
"Sorry, guess I'm still angry," he replied. Wet cloth in one hand, his other still curled in a fist.
Twilight stood up slowly and tossed the cloth onto the wash stand. He let out a long sigh before sitting beside Wars on the bed.
"Do you remember what happened?"
"Some guy put something in my ale, I think. It's a bit hazy."
"He drugged you Link, he wanted..." Twilight trailed off, unable to let himself finish the thought.
Twi dropped his head into his hands. He just couldn't bare it. Couldn't think about what might have happened if he hadn't noticed Warriors in distress sitting at that bar. He should have been more attentive. Shouldn't have let his guard down so much.
"Where is he?" Wars asked, he sounded exhausted.
"Who?"
"The guy from the tavern Twi. Where is he?"
"You don't have to worry about him. He's not going to bother you again, alright." Twilight insisted, wrapping an arm around Warriors shoulders.
"You didn't... He's not..." Wars paused, staring at him warily.
"What? Oh no, Time and Sky handed him to some guards who took him away. Well, not before they'd taught him a lesson of their own."
"That's not good Twi," Wars mumbled.
When Twi looked beside him, Wars was sat with his arms crossed, facing the other direction.
"He was a bad person Wars, a villain. He deserves to be punished for trying to hurt you."
"He was just a guy. A bad person yes, but hurting bad people doesn't make us good people Twi," Wars insisted. "I know what he did was very wrong and I'm greatful that you stopped him. But I didn't want him to get hurt for my sake. He was a soldier, like me. He lost people, like me. He was looking for some comfort and relief. Like me."
"Hey, look at me," Twilight said a little loudly.
He grasped Warriors shoulders and turned Wars to face him.
"Link, listen to me, you are not like him. He may have started off like you but he's chosen a different path. People like him think they can take what they want because they feel like they're owed it somehow. You don't owe people like that shit! Alright Link. Maybe Sky and Time took matters a little too far, but that's only because we care about you so much. Even Legend was about to kick that guys ass for you."
"Maybe I was too rude to him," Wars sniffed, and Twi could see the glint of tears in the corners of his eyes.
"What? He was being a jerk. Did you tell him you weren't interested?" Twi shook his head, not believing what Wars was getting at.
"Yeah," Wars shrugged. "Maybe I shouldn't have. Should have just let him fuck me."
A few tears slipped down Warriors cheek and he clutched his upper arms a little more tightly.
"What the fuck?!" Twilight stated, firmly turning Warriors head so he could look him dead in the eyes.
"Do you realise how messed up that sounds? You really think it would be better to just let some random stranger fuck you, than for you to upset them? Link, that's crazy talk. Not to mention, how do you think that makes me feel?!"
"I dunno," Wars sobbed, allowing his tears to flow freely as his shoulders shook.
"It makes me want to burn the whole world down and curse the gods for making you feel so worthless. For goddess sake Wars, I'd fight armies for you. I'd challenge the gods for you. To hear you say you don't care what people do to you, it breaks my heart."
"Never been more than just a pretty face and good with a sword," Wars uttered, wiping his nose on the back of his hand.
"That's not true and you know it. You are worth all the love in the world and more. You've fought and bled for your country and you've done it all again without question. They don't deserve you Link. You may think you started out just like that guy, but you hold yourself to a much higher standard than people like that could only dream of reaching. I'm gonna say it over and over again until I get it through that thick skull of yours. You are more than just what people say you are."
"But..."
"But nothin." Twilight interrupted, placing a soft finger over Warriors lips. "I don't wanna argue about this anymore. You can think what you like about yourself but I stick by what I told ya before. I don't say things I don't mean. So trust me when I say, you need to believe in your own self worth. Believe that I can love you for who you are. Not just because you're good lookin or fun in bed. But because you have a good heart. Everything else is just a bonus."
When Twilight finished speaking, he pulled Wars into a tight embrace. Wrapping his arms around his lover and holding him tight against his chest. If he could have squeezed the self doubt out of Warriors he certainly would have tried. Twilight held Wars as he trembled and sobbed. Twi felt the front of his tunic grow wet with tears, but he couldn't have cared less.
Twi's crushing embrace helped to ground the part of Warriors mind that was still functioning. Twi was warm, and solid, and an anchor to Warriors in the raging storm of his emotions. This wasn't the first time he'd considered letting people have their way with him, no matter what he himself wanted. But at that moment he made a decision. It would be the last time.
Damn Cia and how she had sexualised and objectified him to an entire kingdom. The Hero had been propaganda for the army and the people. Eaten up and devoured by those for or against his envolvement. But now he was just Link. Still a servant of Hylia, loyal to his kingdom. But he was his own man and he was done playing the role he had created for himself.
Wars gently pulled himself out of Twilight's grasp and looked up into his face. Twi looked on the slightly manic side of concerned. His brow furrowed, his muscles tense. Wars stretched out a hand to stroke Twilight's cheek.
"You really are one of a kind Twi. I consider myself extremely lucky to be loved by you," Wars remarked, smiling softly
"Here I thought I was the lucky one."
Wars chuckled and leant forward to touch his forehead to Twilight's.
"Promise me one thing," Twi uttered.
"What?"
"Next time someone starts hitting on you, you make sure you introduce them to me first. And I'll tell them exactly where they can go!"
"Haha! If someone starts hitting on me, I'll tell them myself!"

No but for real, this is one of the contradictions in his character that makes Holmes quite hard to write! One the one hand, yes, so right that Holmes really is an overdramatic kitten vying for Watson's attention and affection. On the other hand, he really doesn't trust easily - that remains a sore point between Holmes and Watson even in the stories supposedly taking place later, years into their companionship. Hell, he even didn't tell Watson he was still alive for TREE YEARS. So, I guess he tends to be a pathetic mowling kitten in those moments where he is alone with Watson (or mrs. Hudson, I suppose) and feels COMPLETELY safe. If there's any danger lurking or his plans even have the slightest possibility of failing, I guess it is likely he would hide an injury/illness when appearing weak or vulnerable would endanger him or not fit it with his clever little plans (the irony, I suppose, of course being that hidden hurt has a greater potential to mess up cases)
Also consider: Holmes' system being flooded with adrealine and him simply not noticing pain or hunger of thirst
Thank you all for the interesting thoughts!! It really made me reconsider him. I guess I have to rewrite my long whump Sherlock Holmes fic once again - damn it. I thought I was finally nearly done
Absolutely love it when fics have Holmes trying to play off an injury as less serious than it actually is, but let's be real - that man is dramatic. If he was a dog, he'd be the type to fake a paw injury for extra treats and attention but forget which foot he used.
