i keep forgetting tristamp vash's angel arm ate his prosthesis

Trigun Manga Reaction
Now back with Volume 1 - Chapter 3
I like this. Simple pose but very interesting with the "imbalance" I guess with the tilted head, shadowed face, and slightly lower slope of one shoulder. It's not "stiff" and it's easy to imagine the wind blowing through Vash's coat and hair.
A thought occurs tho, Did Trigun predate Tetsuya Nomura's obsessive belts, belts, and more belts design quirk? Did Nightow and Vash started that anime fashion trend?
Uhuh. Says the people who tried to shoot a GRENADE at that same one guy.
I kinda put these three panels in a sequence because... we know Vash is a good guy. Of course, he's going to save the women but the emphasis on the Nebraskas reaction to his rescue is really interesting.
Vash gives them a side-eye. He's either gauging their capacity for mercy or already clocked in that they are capable of mercy and silently hints for them to wait just a moment.
Father Nebraska understanding and just waits as he smokes. Then confirms first if Vash is ready to rumble again.
Idk. It's a moment of humanity not only for Vash but for the Nebraskas too imo.
AND IT'S WEIRD! In '98, Father Nebraska tried to get a cheap shot on Vash while he was still carrying someone to safety.
Yeah, assholes. Vash is doing his best to keep the women in the clear while you guys just throws grenades willy-nilly into buildings who have people in them. Smh.
Ngl. This sequence confuses me a bit. But, going with what happened earlier, the Nebraskas were not targeting the women. The punch was intended for Vash - which he dodged easily. However, instead of running further away, he shielded the women from the flying debris that the punch caused.
WHICH AGAIN, I REITERATE, IS REALLY WEIRD FOR '98 TO DEVIATE FROM!
In the '98, they are bonafide bad guys but in the manga they're still bad but not "Muwahahaha I'll shoot the injured women Hahahaha!" bad . The Nebraskas have some semblance of honor here.
I guess this is why TriStamp has a much more nuanced presentation of these characters. It's closer to the manga.
Oof... Owww... Vash... 😢
Another gorgeous art. I like how Nightow's way of using perspective here!
Junior is established to be huge - a giant. He always take up so much space in the panels/pages like below:
However, when Vash finally "duelled" them seriously. Doesn't Junior suddenly "feels" smaller and Vash really big?
It's really cool how it instantly shows that Vash isn't goofing off anymore and the Nebraskas stand no chance in winning this.
Ragey Baby Girl no longer smiling.
Sigh. Gotta admire their one track mind.
Ngl. The line work here gave me Junji Ito vides for some reason. Vash's eye look haunting, cold, and really old.
Linework carrying hard on this page. Vash is obviously quicker with how much lines are there in his entire arm - convincingly too fast of a blur. Meanwhile Junior has less lines which makes his fist less blurry and, therefore, slower.
Clever use of the sound effects in the first panel.
I don't know what the fuck is going on in the second panel. I've been staring at it too long already and I still can't understand except it has something to do with Junior's arm?
Third panel is the crazy detail on Vash's eye. His glasses seem like he is looking at the side. However, on closer inspection, Vash is actually not looking away from the incoming attack.
The following pages is really great at building the tension on how would this duel end. The '98 anime captured it very well!
Looking cool, Vash!
Also, is it just me or does he always look for opportunities to show off his flexibility and long long legs. Must he really split here?
...
...
YES. YES HE MUST.
Oh. Ooooh! So that's what happened!
In '98, this conclusion was given to the bandit in Episode 1. His own enhancements crunching his body until he passed out and lost to Vash. However, they can't exactly rehash this in Episode 5. So, we have the "LOVE AND PEACE!" scene instead.
Admittedly, I prefer the "LOVE AND PEACE" conclusion more.
I like how, so far imo, Nightow just gives no fucks about anatomy in his art. I mean... Look at this! Even if we reason that it's because his coat is dramatically billowing with the wind, Vash's body is not proportionate. However, it doesn't matter! It looks cool and it evokes the right emotions just fine: fear and awe.
OMFG?!!! The trials these two are going through! These poor insurance ladies! Milly hanging on for dear life to that pillar. Meryl just screaming her lungs out EVEN WITH A MEGAPHONE!
AND IT WAS FOR NOTHING!!!! OML
Being considered as someone equivalent to a natural disaster shouldn't bring joy, but damn it... LOOK AT HOW HAPPY VASH IS!!! AWWW BABY GIRL!!!
Wow. They blame HER!!! How dare- Meryl beat them up! No, Milly. LET MERYL HAVE THEM!!! THEY DESERVE TO BE CRUMPLED LIKE TISSUE PAPER AFTER THROWING OFF GRENADES LIKE CONFETTI EARLIER AT VASH!!!
Awww. Their first interaction is SO CUTE!!!
In '98, it's funny and amusing. Ditto on TriStamp. But this one is sweet since Meryl and Milly kinda saved Vash in here.
I mean. Yeah, the townspeople are scared because Vash just beat the Nebraskas, but they are desperate for money. Desperation can override fear given enough time. Vash would've been hunted all over again.
I take it back. The insurance ladies climbing up to that bell tower was not for nothing. It was enough to allow Vash a moment to breathe and, as he rejoices, be free (even just for a while).
Wonder what exactly went through Vash's head here. Confusion? Fear? Dread?
HELL YEAH!!! BADASS LADIES IN LONG COATS! STRIKE FEAR TO THE HEARTS OF EVERYONE!!!
Oh. Some responses to the a couple of tags:
@alena-reblobs
Thanks! Glad you're having fun too because I sure am. I appreciate the warning and I'm kinda nervous because the action this chapter was kinda confusing to understand. Hopefully, it won't get worse (will it?) I agree that they are very cool nonetheless!
@eldritchneuro
Thanks for explaining! Paneling is always fun to study in mangas because they usually follow a 3 or 4 panels which mangakas creatively breakdown to evoke a feeling among readers.
Trigun is interesting because its from the 90's! So, some of the paneling are probably "prototypes" of the crazy ones we'd see in modern mangas.
I guess, Nightow's aiming to make the page very "cinematic" with slo-mo (sparse panels) and hyper focus on details (graphic weight). It draws us readers in to the story more effectively as if we are there too with the townspeople looking at the Humanoid Typhoon.
#trigunbookclub#trimax journey#this was a long one#i think i like this best#i mean it would've been nicer if '98 'love & peace!' was here too#and the tristamp's gravitas regarding the nebraskas#but the og fight here in the manga has the right western charm and insurance ladies in action for me

(Spoiler warning to Trigun Stampede I guess...)
(Also just fyi, I've watched 98' and Stampede. Haven't read the manga yet but I plan to very soon. Gotta explore all the lores)
@doingherbestbutnot I like how you think, my friend. I read your post that you linked to in your reblog. I agree with your thoughts there. 👌
Imma go off on a bit about my own thoughts and opinions on Nai's character now as I have no other outlet for this. I'm sorry if this is scattedbrained and long. I'm not good with words. 😖
I, personally, love the dynamic Tristamp brings to the twins' relationship. I love how there are similarities/parallels between them, yet they're just so disconnected due to personal views.
Going more into Nai's side of things as this post is about Nai. (Vash is a whole other can of worms to tackle) I feel like the only one Nai trusts and loves in the world is his brother. Even after Vash chooses the humans over him, something he appears very hurt and betrayed by the first time it happens when Vash sticks a gun in his face. The emptiness he must have felt. And then stewing in that for years upon years? Yikes.
His lack of ability to understand Vash is even more apparent in the end when he has his mega BRUH moment when Vash explains how he'll always stay by the humans' side "cause he's Vash the Stampede." (his face after Vash says that has me rolling every time. Very sibling of them. 🤣 But then my heart breaks cause that follow up scene and the line about "a paradise for both of us" hits. 🫠)
The subtle emotions that actually flicker across his face throughout the series if you watch him closely drives me insane. He's so complex and I love that so much I could drown in it.
I honestly have a hard time seeing him as pure evil. The antagonist? Yes. Pure evil? No. Not with all the context and understanding him as a character. He's trying to save his people who he's had to watch suffer for so long and he thinks he's doing it in the best way he can. Should he be destroying all of humanity? No.
I do genuinely believe he loved Rem, that she was the exception when it came to the humans. Why would he ask her to come with him and Vash if he didn't? It's definitely more messy and complicated now and I do think he blames her as one of the reasons Vash is now "poisoned" against him.
The fact that Vash and Nai's relationship is so messy and complex makes it so much more intriguing to me. Lots of food for thought in it.
Maybe I'm just reading to much into it tho? Idk. I'm not the best with words. Please no hate. This is all just my personal thoughts and opinions. I could go on but I'm stopping here as this is already long. 😅
I love all the characters and greatly anticipate watching them continue to develop! ❤️
Am I the only one who thinks Nai was projecting when he said to Vash,
"It must feel nice, stunning the masses with your tricks. Collecting their cries of adoration. Does their praise cure it? The loneliness?"
It's the phrasing that does it for me. My man is 100% lonely.
#why am i genuinely scared to post this#i usually dont get so wordy on here but his character is just so delicious#tristamp spoilers#trigun stampede#tristamp#trigun#millions knives#inky rambles

Trigun Manga Reaction
Now reading Volume 1 Chapters 7!
Oh. Nice foreshortening!
Have I mentioned before that the art in the manga is amazing? I mean not only is it pretty but the techniques and the visual storytelling!
This manga really spoils me rotten with beautiful double spreads.
Was Trigun a weekly manga or a monthly comic in the 90's? Like, how is this level of quality maintained every chapter?!
This sweet apologetic smile. Baby Girl Vash. SOMEONE PLEASE PROTECT HIM!!!
I love this part because of how the "tech" looks. Maybe I'm just high on nostalgia but if you ask me, the best and most creative visual takes of futuristic technology are from the 90's. OK... 70s to 80's too. BUT 90'S ARE THE BEST!
LMAO! I remember this! Vash loves teasing his enemies with cheeky notes, doesn't he?
Dime novels??? Penny dreadfuls?? Gasp! HARLEQUINS?!!
DOES THE SETTING OF TRIGUN HAVE AN EQUIVALENT OF HARLEQUINS?! IF SO, I'D BE SO HAPPY BECAUSE I HAVE THIS HC ABOUT WOLFWOOD'S FASHION CHOICE BEING CONNECTED TO THOSE RAUNCHY CHEAP ROMANCE NOVELS!!!
Also, another amazing nightmare face! But then...
WHIPLASH! Vash adding levity by hyping himself up. Tho more likely, he is telling the truth. Not that anyone would really believe it with the facade he puts up.
Oh, wait. I only notice this just now. The Vash's glove design in the manga is what was used in in Tristamp. Only three fingers are covered. In '98, it was all of his fingers are concealed by the glove.
AH! I REMEMBER THIS! ESPECIALLY HOW IT ENDS! I'm laughing already. Kaite... is not the best navigator.
Ah Classic Vash. Deflect. Deflect. Deflect.
Oh... This scene. It's kinda scary how catching Vash off guard is deadly for his attacker. Really highlights how much he has to control all himself all the time. Killing is too easy for him with his abilities. So, he has to exercise strict disciple and caution for the sake of others all the time.
This is also sad. A kid telling off an adult for not wanting to kill. It really hammers down how awful their world is - that killing is the norm and logical thing to do. Avoiding violence and killing is seen as stupidity.
This page makes my heart hurt for so many reasons. Vash is suffering physical pain from being shot. However, I think what is more devastating is his ideals being questioned and insulted by a child - someone who should be innocent from the concept of taking lives.
Vash was hurt by what Kaite said. But, I think he also understands why he did it too. It was out of both worry and the unfortunate circumstance of their violent word. Hence, his intense glare at the top of the page then softening into a sheepish look at the bottom.
Oh wow. Another beautiful art and amazing composition and...
Rem just has strong presence in the manga, doesn't she? It's something that was in Tristamp but kind of lessened in '98.
Oh... I wish this had not been cut out from '98. I don't think this can be rehashed in Tristamp, can't it? Damn... it deserves to be animated.
Kudos for '98 in doing a great job animating this page.
Boo for not doing justice for this page, '98! WHAT THE HELL?! Why was Rem not featured a lot in '98?! At least, Tristamp made up for it... BUT I LIKE REM'S LONG HAIR DESIGN BETTER!
HAHAHAHAHA!
AH.... Ah? AHHHH?!
Fuck! I forgot. This was not supposed to be funny?! Why did I remember this scene is funny?!
Also:
@poofyphluff
I read about the filler thing. Didn't expect it to be that much. And yeah, I'm really admiring Nightow's skills with scaling in his art. It really enhances his visual story telling.
@revenantghost
It is slowly dawning on me the differences between '98 and the manga PLUS the similarities between Tristamp and manga.
I guess my memory is not as accurate as I believe. I thought the OOC-ness from '98 is not that much yet. I thought Vash being a horndoggy perv is just a Badlands thing. It's really nice that it is nowhere here in the manga tho and Tristamp.
It begs the question tho, why make Vash like that in '98?
Oh. So Wolfwood's situation and I guess the '98 ending is similar to what happened with the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime? The studio was forced to do an AOE.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Feel better soon.
#trigunbookclub#trimax journey#i think my memory is a bit unreliable regarding '98#hmmm maybe i should re-watch while reading the manga#for comparison's sake#however i'm mad!!! we were deprived of so much early rem scenes!#why??!!!

Trigun Manga Reaction
Now unto Volume 1 - Chapter 4
Meryl sums up Vash so well. He gave the bounty to the people that hunted him.
AND he also gave food to Kuroneko.
I must say tho. How did they get salmon? I get that the Plants can produce them. But... how? Do the Plants produce them as raw whole fish? Live fish? Neatly sliced fish? The production of water and energy is really easy to imagine. However, specific stuff like this bewilders me.
Also, I like the '98 a little better because the townspeople are more involved - showing remorse and gratitude at the same time.
Another incredible double spread. I like the massive scale of the ship is drawn. But I'm distracted by Meryl and Milly's hands here. It's so funny how to communicates so much fury and incredulity.
WAIT. WHAT?!
So, the tracking device stuff happened way earlier?!
It's interesting how these sequence of events were re-arranged in the '98 with minor changes. Yet even with that, the "spirit" of the characters stayed true.
Meryl and Milly are competent with their jobs. It's just that Vash is a bit "very much" and they constantly have to adapt to the string of unfortunate events shenanigans he always inevitably get involved in.
LMAO!!! This never gets old. But why is the other kitty not here too?! I guess the reddish brown one is a'98 original.
Another interesting double page that makes me wonder... How does it look in a book format? Wouldn't there be some warping in the middle that may affect the full picture?
I'm curious because I'm reading the Overhaul version atm since the official English release, apparently, is not exactly stellar with the translation (Hopefully not John Werry level). Anyway, the pages are cleaned up so the art is great for the double page spreads.
Oh. I like the composition of the info dump in here. Have the travel route arrow on the map connect Text Box 1 to Text Box 2 is quite clever.
Wasn't able to say it before but Tristamp Tonis broke my heart. Compared to his '98 and manga counterparts... It's not fair! Plus his ruined relationship with Vash...
AHAHAHAHA. So silly! Poor Vash.
After coming off from Tristamp, seeing this in the manga and remembering how it was in '98... holy fucking shit Tristamp Vash had it worse. So so much worse. That poor iteration of Vash didn't even got the chance to breathe or be appreciated like this by the people on screen. It was just one long trauma conga line.
Or maybe it was a problem in pacing? Tristamp went hard and fast with its story pace (practically JJK style) unlike here in the manga and most definitely unlike '98. The latest Trigun adaptation left no room for filler-y stuff like this... I wish they did tho.
But augh... thinking about it, maybe it's for the best that Studio Orange didn't because Roberto would definitely feel like a Milly replacement and earn more fan ire (which would totally be understandable imho). The production will be tougher too since it means more animation to do especially "anime physics" character acting which, as I mentioned before, is rough to do in 3D.
However... Vash deserved a lot more comfort in Tristamp not to mention even more character dynamics between Meryl, Wolfwood, and Roberto. Sigh. It's the JJK Pacing Dilemma all over again for me.
I remember this too from '98! And it is still funny. I can still hear the VA's "drunk" voice.
AHAhaha...Ha... One of the things that flew over my head as a kid and then finally understood as an adult.
But I wonder if there are ulterior motives here too? Like trying to tie Vash down more to the town - perhaps a good night with a woman would make him hesitate to leave? Not that he ever would as obviously seen in the panel and the next.
Idk. Maybe I'm reading too much into it now.
Sigh... Another sweet Tonis moment. Tristamp Vash was robbed!
I shouldn't laugh but AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!
OMFG AND VASH PULLED A NIGHTMARE FACE BECAUSE OF IT TOO!!!
Idk. '98 faithfully animated this but the manga seems funnier to me. Can't explain why.
The kid has more spunk in his intro on '98 tho with his backtalking to Vash.
Really really good shadowing...
I'M SORRY WHAT?! WAS INTO SODO- Wait wait wait.... Let me check something...
So, in the OG JP Dub it was implied. Maybe. Who knows if the translation was accurate?! However, in the ENG Dub it was not. Just a general "He always trying to get at me!"... I always thought that he just meant that the "Uncle" is physically abusive and not sexual.
OKAY! Now it makes sense why this kid was worried that his story was "too impossible" to be believed. He straight up used the term "sodomy". Children suffering from such threats or abuse won't usually say it so formally (?) like that (or as I believe but I'm not knowledgeable on this). It was a red flag of a lie. Hmm... small change but quite an impact.
Huh... If you ask me, I think dish duty is much better than the cashier. Customer service gives me the hives.
However, '98 I think made the right call to have Meryl and Milly work the cashier. It suits them especially since they used it as an opportunity to bully Vash!
#trigunbookclub#trimax journey#this is a fairly calm chapter with lots of set ups instead - a lull so to speak#again the timeline/sequence of the manga was followed more closely by tristamp while '98 shuffled things around#however '98 and manga share the levity while tristamp is a bit more heavy on the plot and angst#it's not bad tho just different
