more detailed design thoughts
well, first of all, did you know that bonesaw is actually described as looking the same age as dinah and imp xD everyone draws her looking like 5, but she's really much closer to 12. i was really shocked when i saw this in the wiki because i had honestly also forgotten. she acts so much younger, you know? so my main goal was to draw an outfit that looked childish, but also matched the look of a young lady. my secondary goal was to invoke the feelings of both medicine and violence. for this, i decided to mix ww2 military wear with vintage nurse outfits as well as 40s dresses meant for teenagers.
... this was also my first thought because i dress in 40s style daily... so it was kind of just the logical choice to me... but historical looks can create a "horror" feeling almost instantly, so it helps with the intended feeling :-)
this design is based equally on photo references and on clothing i own/hairstyles i've given myself. for example, i own a pair of gloves that look exactly like the set i gave this design, except they are in an extremely vibrant blue. the hair i drew is kind of a blend between classic ponytail barbie and 40s pincurls.
her face is referenced off of paintings of kids in old ads. you know how sometimes the kids look fucking horrifying despite being intended to look happy and friendly? yep, that's it.
the orange apron is a classic 40s style. seriously. full-length ones were often excessively frilly like that!! although they usually were in more straight lines (round hems are more 50s style)
i gave her gloves because 1. doctors wear gloves DUH 2. i really like gloves (i own like 15 sets of vintage ones) 3. i think she has tons of modifications on her hands & the gloves disguise them so they stay a surprise. and the red color is to hide the bloodstains. plus, cloth gloves are much more sturdy than disposable ones :-)
disguising wacky tinker modifications is also part of why there's so many layers of fluffy clothing. she could have a bunch of mechanical spider legs hidden under that skirt or something, maybe rigid armor plating under the blouse and aprons. also, more layers of clothing = more fabric to sneak pockets into for more storage. you can also tuck pins and needles into skirt pleats (sometimes i am sewing on the go and don't want to drop sharp stuff on the ground so i have experience with this).
umm what else about the clothing... oh, something you might not expect as a modern person is that dresses like this are, in my experience, generally sewn as separates and not as a one-piece like modern dresses. i wanted to draw this clearly in the design because i feel like it adds a lot of character, and, well, because my vintage clothes have really old elastics, sometimes the blouse slips out of tuck-in under the skirt and makes you look really disheveled, so i planned on drawing bonesaw looking like that in the future xD
for the structure of the hair. 40s brushout styles are curled only around the edge of the hairline, leaving the back of the head with straight hair. i didn't know how to mark that on the sheet, but i think it's really important to the look.
i have no idea where bonesaw would get vintage shoes like this, and she would ruin them instantly by prancing around in blood and shit... but they're so cute xD i have a 20s reproduction set that are the love of my life. for this design, i drew her with an extra long toebox because i thought she would get shoes in extra large sizes because she's a kid and would be used to buying shoes big so she can grow into them :D:
besides the structure of the outfit, the most important part is the colors. i think this is pretty clear just looking at it. it's all in blood red, starched white, and military green, plus the natural colors of the leather apron and the orange accent of the apron. i hope that it immediately makes you think of war nurses because that's what i was going for.
while coming up with this and working on the details, i kept wondering, where would she get such a complicated outfit when she's always staining it with unmentionables? well, first of all, it's a character design, so i wanted it to look unique, okay. but i like to imagine that the slaughterhouse 9 periodically threatens some old lady who sews a lot for her grandkids into churning out a bunch of copies of this outfit in various levels of quality and they just carry around a suitcase stuffed with a capsule wardrobe full of this one look HAHA
this is all allowed because the s9 are the most cartoon of any worm team >:-)

okay, so, bonesaw, miss riley grace davis. i love bonesaw to pieces. but her look... hmm... personally, i'm not really into any of her outfit in any fanart i've seen. so i dedicated myself to designing her a cohesive look!!
i hope other people like my redesign too. feel free to draw this/repost it/lie and claim it as your own somewhere for the attention, i truly do not care, all i care about is other people also enjoying bonesaw :D my only important design note is that, although i did not draw it because i wanted clarity in the design sheet, of course she is always coated in blood and viscera haha
