canon v fanon is the trend/meme of the day ig and I've been musing about my characterisation of different pokemon characters because on one hand there's not very much to draw from in the games (the anime can be a bit hit or miss, the manga is, respectfully, licensed fanfiction) but it's also really fun to sort of read between the lines and build on limited foundations

but the thing about that is that the same foundations can still lead to very different and equally valid interpretations, and I'm honestly less concerned with "is this canon compliant?" and more "does this capture the character's essence and tell a compelling story with them?"

#cynthia is unique in that she has a lot more material than most other characters but it's also relatively consistent #i dont think enough ppl write malva for there to even /be/ a fanon but there's a lot of things i think ppl take at face value w her #that i dont necessarily buy bc she's still a very public figure who is good at masking. she's a news reporter not a gossip columnist #(*good at masking until she Isn’t)#similarly with diantha i enjoy the wholesome pure angel approach but she is also an actress who is going to put on the prettiest public fac #so i like the idea that internally she's more cynical than she lets on #i need to write the whole essay but im not in the headspace for it rn
