I literally just changed out a filter not an hour ago. Fucking Houston pollen is trying to kill me this month.
Adult life is full of so many filters you need to change out. You’re probably forgetting to change out a filter right now.

I’m an employee at a pet store that sells those crappy 1 gallons, and I’ve gotten dozens, maybe hundreds of people who want to put bettas in bowls. Transitioning them to a proper 2.5 or larger is really hard and unlikely, so to stop bettas from living in an unfiltered bowl I often sell people the 1 gallon tanks with filters built in so they have clean water at the very least, and then try to convince them to buy larger tanks and heaters down the line to improve the happiness and health—-
—- of the betta. I know 1 gallons are too small but someone who’s used to abusing animals all their life doesn’t want to do the right thing. If we have sales (which we do occasionally) where the 1 and the 3.5 are the same price I can convince them to buy the 3.5, but if I push too hard they’ll leave and buy another betta to abuse elsewhere. What are your thoughts? I know this isn’t the best situation.
hey there anon! happy weekend to you~ hopefully youre enjoying it, or at least not working too hard.
I’m an employee at a pet store that sells those crappy 1 gallons, and I’ve gotten dozens, maybe hundreds of people who want to put bettas in bowls. I 110% believe you.
Transitioning them to a proper 2.5 or larger is really hard and unlikely, so to stop bettas from living in an unfiltered bowl I often sell people the 1 gallon tanks with filters built in so they have clean water at the very least, and then try to convince them to buy larger tanks and heaters down the line to improve the happiness and healthof the betta.ive tried before a few times to persuade people to get bigger tanks...sometimes i am successful, sometimes i’m not :/ any kind of improvement is still that -- an improvement, a step up from what the animal would’ve been kept in. same goes for other animals and other commonly-purchased items, like critter trails. you’re doing the best you can do and i promise you that is enough
I know 1 gallons are too small but someone who’s used to abusing animals all their life doesn’t want to do the right thing. you can educate someone and give them resources but ultimately they are responsible for caring for their animals and what kind of setup they provide so maybe down the road theyll do some googling and get a bigger setup because of what you said. and maybe its also really really hard to explain the /WHY/ of any given aspect of care in the short amount of time that someone is in the store. i always compare it to riding a bike...like when a parent tells their kid “you have to wear a helmet” and the kid says “no its ugly and hot and sweaty and dumb. why do i have to wear it? i dont want to” and the parent says “because i said so!”. when explaining pet care, or really changing anyone’s mind about anything, the ‘burden of proof’ lies with you since youre the one trying to change their currently-held belief, and its hard to do that when you just tell them to do something ‘because its right’ (even if it is right). best to tell them that “helmets are to keep them safe, and ugly and hot and sweaty and dumb is beter than injured or dead”, so to speak. and some people just dont care even if they do understand why certain aspects of care demand certain products. again, you can only do so much and ultimately the pet-owner is responsible for the wellbeing of their pet, regardless of species.
If we have sales (which we do occasionally) where the 1 and the 3.5 are the same price I can convince them to buy the 3.5,shoutout to yall cuz i bought two 3.5 gallon tanks for my nephews new bettas cuz they were on sale today~ and yeah, thatd be the one big thing keeping me from upsizing on tanks...tbh all of the smaller tanks are ridiculously overpriced imo. that pineapple tank at petsmart was DOPE and i rly wanted to get it for some marimos or a juvenile taranula...but it was like $30!? and never went under $20...ridiculous ._.
but if I push too hard they’ll leave and buy another betta to abuse elsewhere.people are gonna do what theyre gonna do :/ you sound like youre doing your best so keep on trucking and know that we appreciate you

Intro:
So i've taken up an aquarium hobby n i wanted to share some of my experiences on here just cuz i feel like it (also im depressed af n my therapist said itll help if i get back to writing n talkin about stuff i like so here i be 🙃)
ANYWAYS, about a yr n a half? Maybe 2? Years ago i was not in a great place (still am not lol but its better so issokay) n i had started working in customer service at a new company n the clients were shit n my whole life was revolving around this damn job. I woke up one morning n i was like i want a fish. Mind u i knew jack about fish at the time i just wanted em cuz i wanted a lil coot friend THAT DOESNT GET CHARGED RENT Y TF DO APARTMENTS CHARGE DOGGY N KITTY RENT. WHAT EVEN IS THAT??? N also i didnt trust myself to take care of an animal fully so i thought hey fishy r easy lotsa kids have fishies.
No.
Fish are NOT EASY. i wish fish came w a disclaimer "not for the faint of heart, will make u cry"
It was a regular day, went to work, dealt w shitty ppl yadda yadda yadda n i come home, i live w my parents btw, so i walk in n this whole day m thinkin... I really want a fish, like really bad. So i walk in n the first thing i say to my mom is, imma buy a fish. Thats it m getting a fish. Today. Right now. N my moms like okaaayyy??? Where are u gon get a fish. Theres a pet smart walking distance away from me so obviously thats where i go n i drag my mom w me cuz idk what m doin n i dont wan go alone. N shes just starin at me like m crazy cuz fish ykno.
Walk in there n some dudes like can i help u n m like ye, i want a fish. N hes like cool cool what kind of fish u looking for n m just like??? A fish? Just a fish? A fish that looks like a fish?
N hes like ummmm okay??? Sooo is this going to b ur first fish? N ye is my first fish this is a big deal bro get w the times. Im adopting a whole water child. I didnt have a tank so dude sells me a 5 gallon tank n i choose 2 lil baby catfish n my mom chose another fish that i honestly dont remember n i was so excited. So he told me to get a filter cartridge n a heater n a thermometer n everything else came w the tank i got n i bought some decor n this bright red gravel n i was hella excited. Get in line n get to the cashier n cashier is like, r u setting ip for the first time? Yes. N he lets me know i cant just drop a fish into tap water n m like??? What? I thought water was water. N hes like ye but tap water has chlorine n m like ohhhh so i discover what water conditioner is. Get that n spend a crap ton of money. Get attached to my coot lil catfish, i named em tom n jerry.
I get home n i set up their lil hone, get the water in n follow the directions of the water conditioner n wait 15 mins. I rinse off the gravel n decor n set those up n everything looks great n then i dump those babies in. Acclimation? Never heard of it. N theyre swimming around like crazy n m like dang they love it!! I did such a great job m so proud of myself. I feed them cuz that's what the tank instructions said to feed em after like half an hr or smth i dont remember but i fed em n they didnt eat n m like they prolly not hungry its okay. Check on em a few hrs later n one of the catfish is still running around like crazy n then stop n drops to the gravel n then gets up n does it all again n m like??? Is that normal??? Is that how they play?? Prolly. The other cat fish was slowly swimming over the gravel n the other fish my mom chose was hiding under the bridge. N m like laddy dadi da m a fish mommy life is great i have 3 water babies.
LITTE DID I KNOW I DID SO MANY THINGS WRONG!!!
Next day m on my way home from work hella excited to see my fishy babies n my mom calls n shes like come to pet smart dont go home... N m like why??? N shes like cuz i found another fish i think youd like. N m like but we have 3 we just bought yesterday. N shes like no u rlly need ro see this fish. I go to pet smart.
There was no fish. She was returning 3 dead fish.
My 3 dead water babies. SHE TOLD ME MY FISH DIED AT PET SMART. IN FRONT OF STEANGERS. WHY?! i cried in the car lmao.
She was tryna convince me its okay n we can get new fish were already at petsmart. But o ask the lady why the fish died cuz i followed all the instructions n shes like fish die all the time theyre sensitive little creatures it could b for lots of reasons. N then she asked if there was any unusual behavior n m like idk i had em for a day. Then we find out... Ummmm ur supposed to cycle a tank. N acclimation exists. N bacteria is a thing n yeaaahhh i murdered 3 fish.
Went home to an empty tank n cried some more. Those were technically my v first pets n i had em for less than 24 hrs. 🙃

I saw in one of your 30DOCM posts that you have turtles?! I have one named Shelly, can they be friends?
ummm of course they can be friends. also by sending this youve opened pandoras box where i go into unnecessary detail about my turtles cause they are my tiny sons. you asked for it:
i have 3 eastern painted turtles (im from new england and those are the most common ones around here)
my dad and i made a small pond in our backyard with a heater and filter and everything and it was actually really run and a special thing to experience with him but anyways so we have a pool and every morning in the summer i go out and check the little filter cage cause sometimes animals fall in the pool in the night and get trapped in it but if theyre not in it for too long i can usually save them! so we would put anything we found into our pond. like we find a lot of frogs so we always put those into our pond
so i went to the local pet store and got a bunch of minnows cause theyre cheap and do well in murkier water so i put those in the pond and then the guy was like would you like a turtle as well? and i was like well will he survive in an outdoor tank/pond? and he was like yes! so i bought a turtle
turtle 1 is named puch (pronounced pooch, after a soccer player) and he is small and has an orange mark on his back. i know he is a boy because i looked up how to tell the difference (along with my other two turtle sons)
after a week i had to go back to said pet store and get more food for puch and they were selling more turtles and i was like omg my son could use a friend so i broke down and got another
turtle 2 is named splinter because on the car ride home with him me and my sister were brainstorming names and i was like i wonder how many turtles there are out there named after the ninja turtles and she was like yeah thats so unoriginal and i was like why dont we name him after the rat instead. hence splinter
so then on the forth of july that summer my sister and i were walking my dog across the street (i live across the street from a big farm with miles of woods) and i noticed something moving on the ground and it was a fucking turtle! and ok dont tell the feds on me cause technically its illegal to take turtles from the wild BUT this little mans was stuck on a wine bottle that someone had littered so i felt obligated to take him home and help him out
turtle 3 is significantly bigger than the other two turtles i think cause he’s older maybe (i have literally no way of knowing this btw) so we call him big fat fatty
so then one morning i went out to check the pool filter and there was a FUCKING TURTLE IN IT!!! like ive had a pool for 10+ years but a turtle has never fallen in! i could tell he was barely breathing so i put him in my pond and nursed him back to health but he was clearly a different type of turtle than my other ones so i brought him to the pet store to ask about it and the guy working there was like omg get that away from me! cause apparently it was a snapping turtle even tho it was teeny tiny so it was a baby but still snapping turtles can bite off fingers and shit lmao so i had to release that little guy back into the wild once i made sure he was ok. i named him squibble and i miss him but i couldnt keep him in a tank with my other turtles cause they would get hurt!
so in the winter i bring the turtles inside and have them stay in my fish tank thats in my room. so that first winter when i brought them inside i noticed something weird in my tank and i fished it out with a net and it was a FUCKING LEACH!!! so i scooped up all the turtles and brought them to my bath tub to inspect them and they were COVERED IN LEACHES. LEGIT COVERED! like the leaches were inside their shells and everything. so i guess what must have happened was when i got big fat fatty from the wild he must have had leaches on him that i didnt notice and then when i put him in my man made pond with my other store bought turtles the leaches must have procreated and attached onto them as well :(
so over the course of like 2 weeks i would take my turtles into the bathroom every night and delicately pick leaches off them with tweezers. i lost count after 80 leaches
so dont ever say im not a good mother! that’s my story the end

Betta Fish
Another great way to help fight depression. A cute fishy!! But this is only if you can convince yourself to feed it everyday, but honestly, fishy are very little work.
A reminder, if you get one only get ONE per tank. These fishys don't like eachother much.
I don't know about others, but im waaayyy more likely to get up to take care of my betta than myself.
Also have you ever watched one swim around? Its sooo pretty and soothing.
Also i mean pets! Pets always help and im pretty sure no one is allergic to fish. (Owning one that is)
And and and they come in sooo many shapes and sizes and colors and ahhh (mine are a pretty blue dragon scale male and a red and blue dragon scale female)
Okay, cost!!
Bettas are cheap, at my local fish store their 3-8 dollars, at petco its around 5-15 i believe. They got different kinds and some are more expensive!
Your fishy will need, a tank, (mines in a 2.5 gal and 1 gal, respectively), water conditioner!! Fishys don't live well in regular water. 14 drops (but double check for the brand you get!) In a washed out milk gallon then wait a minute and dump that water in. Your fishy would probably like gravel and maybe a nice plant! Heaters are a good idea too, fishys dont like the cold. If you dont want to clean the tank every week, invest in a filter. Youll wash the tank less. Now, FOOD. The little pellet containers will last you forever. FOREVER.
Heres an example, i got my tank for free, and my first Betta lived in it empty for like a week. But afterwards i went to petsmart, I got a heater, filter, gravel, and a little cute treasure chest for him. It all came to around $30
Ill post my bettas (they live in Diffrenet rooms) next! As well, ill talk about other little critters.
😥 another long post, ill try not to next time!
Have a good day!!

Hi! I've been considering getting a betta fish but having done some research it seems like it's pretty exacting care (and also explains why my childhood fish didn't do so well). I don't wanna end up getting a little fish friend and having them die from me messing something up. I was wondering what you do for your fish and other aquatics since people recommend different things, from tank size to water changes. Thanks and i hope you have a good night!
Sure I can give you some general advice. I know tumblr can make it sound pretty intimidating, but betta care really isnt to hard. Most of it comes down to learning about how not to poison it with its own poop :V (to comically oversimplify science lol)
First, look up nitrogen cycle, theres a million resources and it would take forever for me to write out something that has already been written better. That will explain how to keep fish poop from killing you fish. This also explains why a filter is required for a tank. BUT then I would also suggest this video (and that channel in general. Very informative.)
youtube
Minimum 2.5 gallon tank, because any smaller and it becomes crazy hard to manage the toxin buildup from poop. Also less area for oxygen exchange meaning they cant breath in the water. Now bettas are special and can breath surface air, but its super stressful for that to be the only way for them to breath.
Also any smaller then 2.5 and theres pretty much no space for a betta to swim and they can become so bored/depressed that they start destroying their own fins. Ripped fins and toxic water leads to infection. So 2.5 is bare minimum, but bigger is always better. 5 gallon is honestly still a great ‘desk’ size but gives lots of room for you betta. Cause I understand, alot of places (like dorms) wont let you get anything bigger
As for how often to change water...well that will depend. It will depend on if you have live plants (and what the plant is) and the size of your tank. Bigger tanks take longer for bad stuff to build up, so you have to change it less. Small tanks parameters can swing quickly, so usually more often, especially with a new tank.  (also dont forget to use dechlorinator. most tap water has chlorine added in by the city. It will burn their gills and kill them if you forget) Now a ‘seasoned’ well established, and planted tank can go much longer. in fact you might not ‘need’ to except for aesthetic reasons. For example, my betta tank has gone oh maybe 2ish months without a water change and only top offs for evaporation. But I have pennywort in the tank, which sucks up toxins like crazy and keeps the water perfect. But if something happened and that plant died, I would have to start changing water frequently.  Other great nutrient hogs are anacharis and hornwort. ive also heard wisteria, but i havent personally used it
Balance and remembering to test your water quality frequently. If a tank with a fish in it ever has a reading  of ammonia of anything above zero, you change that water right then.
Temp for a betta is 75-80. So you’ll need a heater in most cases, unless you happen to live in a tropical region and dont use AC. Dont forget a thermometer, because the built in ones on heaters can fail, and you wouldnt know until its to late for your poor fish.
Food: a small floating pellet. I feed 4 in the morning and 4 at night. Though this can vary depending on the size of the brand of pellet. Try and get one that doesnt have wheat as the first ingredient. Bettas are carnivores and it does nothing for them and cause cause intestinal blockages. (trust me, I just recently lost a fish to a blockage caused by cheap food... save yourself the heartbreak and buy the nicer foods.) And bloodworms are a great treat to give too. Heres a good video for telling crap food from good food
youtube
And then I personally like to keep live plants. Bettas are super cute and will sleep and rest on big leaves, and as explained in that video, they are really good for your tank.
I hope this gives a good overview. I know I was kinda all over lol
Anyone else is free to politely correct anything i might have gotten wrong, or add things i forgot. im sleepy and im sure i forgot something >>

Hello,My betta fish has fin rot and I dont know how to heal him. Before he was ok after triple sulfa treatment. Now i tried it again and i also tried bettafix but he didnt get better. He eats ok but his fins are getting worse. I have him in a 5 gallons aquarium with a filter and heater (77f) and i clean his tank weekly and remove 25% of the water. He is alone in the tank. I also bought almonds leaves for him but it didnt make a difference. Thanks for your help,Corina
Hi there! So the number one cause of fin rot is infection by opportunistic bacteria that are ubiquitous to fish tanks. Opportunistic infection only occurs when the immune system is already under stress, which can happen due to a number of different factors–maybe the temperature in your tank fluctuates, or the current of the filter is too strong, or the light is too bright, or the food quality you are serving is too low.
My personal recommendation is to evaluate all potential stressors that your fish might be under, before you try more medication–For starters, I would get your water tested to find out ammonia levels (either buy a kit for yourself which is great to have, or contact your local pet store and see if they can do it for you). If you don’t ever do more than 25% changes, you might have a build up of ammonia in your water–that could be stressing your fish’s immune system and making it hard to recover.
How long did you go between triple sulfa treatments? Did you see a full re-growth of fin in the time between treatments? Not enough time between dosing could have increased stress as well.
As far as medications go–I say it’s time to start working with medications once you have exhausted all options, and the fin rot is steadily progressing OR if the fin rot is rapidly progressing. I’m talking like, half the tail is lost, rather than some nagging black spots.
Triple sulfa might have been a good choice–according to the MSDS data sheets provided by API, though, Triple sulfa is like >60% NaCl, which isn’t effective against bacterial infections (which is what fin rot usually is). The other ingredients are all good antimicrobial agents (I don’t know the minimum dosage a fish would need to so actually get the infection treated so I can’t really comment on whether or not the ration is effective). So it could have some benefits, but if using it isn’t working I would say don’t mess with it again.
As for Bettafix, the API website literally says “Contains the healing power of Melaleuca, a variety of Tea Tree,” which I think sounds like a load of crock, and the MSDS sheets for Bettafix won’t even tell you what’s in it–just says “proprietary blend” so who knows!
If you would be willing to send me some pictures of your fish & fish’s tail, I can assess where his fin rot is at and maybe provide you some more guidance.
(I might have a really different approach from other fish keepers on here–I haven’t been on in a while but my views are informed by my studies in microbiology and by personal experience–I’ve treated mild fin rot cases better with decreasing fish stress than any sort of medications.)

GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 WHERE DID I EVEN STOP IN THE LAST POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
oh yes.
so we were at, 700 in my account right now (16/02); counting a...bunch of stuf....i ve already forgotten....oh wiat yeah - paying debt to friend, paying for hp books, paying for mail stuff for friends = ill have 350 wait is this...i s this right
yeah its 700 -hp books -debt for friend -debt for dad -shipping shit for friends +dads mothyl 200 reais = 300 reais by the end of march. (100 dollars) (not 350 like id said lmao)
putting 100 in a savings account, spending 50 in the water testin kit thing, saving 70 for fish stuff (1st month of 6) = 80 reais. out of this 80 will come uni transport+others too.... and ppl wanted to watch black panther.... ill put 70 in savings account and save 110 reais for stuff in general in march. which is sad. but anyway.
THATS
MARCH: 300 reais -WaterTesting kit(50) -StartOfSavingsAccount(70) -Parcel1/6forFishStuff(70) = 110 for transport/books for uni, and black panther. possibly japanese food w friends. somewhen.
APRIL: +MonthlyDadAllowance(200) -Parcel2/6forFishStuuff(70) -SavingsAccount(40) = 90; 45 for uni, 45 for whatever i want. whats left of whatever i want will go to fish, whats left of uni will go to savings.
RINSE AND REPEAT TILL END OF AUGUST.
when SEPTEMBER COMES ill have at least 270 reais in savings account and 420 reais for fish stuff.   in june ill buy filter (50/420) which leaves me w 370 to, in sept, buy tank (150), heater (75), term/gravel/deco/light/etc (190) = wait this is not right
!!!!!!!! i did my math wrong!!!!! for everything less betta less shrimp ill need 465 by sept, not 415 dkfjkdsjfhskdjfhdskjfhkdsfjh
no wait i went on google and 150+75+190 is actually 415????
 b but
oh yeah theres the filter for 50 which brings it to 465 UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 I CANNOT BELIEVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fine. 50 (filter, forgotten, bc i am a fucki nidiot) / 6 months until i buy everything = 8,3333 reais a month. so instead of saving 70 a month, like i PLANNED, and wrote down ALL BEAUTIUFL UP THERE, im gonna save 80 instead.
so COPY FUCKIN PASTING ALL THAT BULLSHIT UP THERE:
THATS
MARCH: 300 reais -WaterTesting kit(50) -StartOfSavingsAccount(70) -Parcel1/6forFishStuff(80) = 100 for transport/books for uni, and black panther. possibly japanese food w friends. somewhen. maybe. i dont fuckign know anymore.
APRIL: +MonthlyDadAllowance(200) -Parcel2/6forFishStuuff(80) -SavingsAccount(40) = 80; 40 for uni, 40 for whatever i want. whats left of whatever i want will go to fish, whats left of uni will go to savings.
RINSE AND REPEAT TILL END OF AUGUST. (may = parcel 3; june =parcel 4; july - parcel 5; august = parcel 6)
when SEPTEMBER COMES ill have at least 270 reais in savings account and 480 reais for fish stuff.   in june ill buy filter (50/480) which leaves me w 430 to, in sept, buy tank (150), heater (75), term/gravel/deco/light/etc (190) = 415. theres an extra 15 reais there that will prob go to plants or whatever. fuck god.
THIS ALL LEAVES ME WITH A TANK, BUT NO SHRIMP AND NO BETTA, which will b abt 100 for betta assuming god is real and good, and 100 which will buy me something like 3 fucking shrimp. i lie. it will buy me smth like 6 fucknig shrimp. y. ay. yay. please. please if youre out there. commission me. its 15 reais+ a fucking one little orange shrimp. thats only five dollars. Blease
THESE I WILL PARCEL FORWARD (instead of back which is basically what saving for smth is lmao) 200 for shrimp+betta is basically uhhhh 50 reais a month for four motnhs? lets hope ill b able to parcel it like that. lets not think about that ive been thinking so much

Hi, it seems like you know some stuff about cold water fish. I want to stock my 15gal long with either white cloud minnows or zebra danios, but the problem is that I’ll be using a double sponge filter. Which might not be fast enough flow for those species? What do you think? Thinking I should maybe get a betta and heater instead. Thanks for your time.
Good news, anon! According to seriouslyfish dot com, which is where I do the majority of my research, it says that both of these species are native to slow moving waters. Both would do just fine in your tank, but just keep in mind that I would pick one species, as I dont believe a 15 would be adequate to house proper schools of both. In addition, and this only applies to if you're Canadian, but I heard that white clouds were recently banned for import because of their ability to become an invasive species, so just be aware of that. But you should never release fish (or any animal) into the wild anyway.

Hvac service Secrets
Pour a cup of bleach, followed by a very good gallon of warm/very hot water in to the vent pipes within the attic whenever you convert the unit off to the period then, before you decide to flip it back again on. It truly is value crawling about whatsoever's while in the attic to make it happen. If you need to demand service if it clogs and around-flows the drain pan, just after emptying the drain pan, which is essentially all of the service tech will do. Precisely the same goes for spraying out The underside of your unit, if there is a space for leaves and particles to clog up. If you prefer the science on ceiling admirers, I like to recommend that you do a scientific experiment of your own. Test jogging the fan at its distinctive speeds, and in Just about every course. (Some followers only operate in one direction. Some admirers reverse by reversing the pitch of your blades) Then sit or stand within the areas from the area in which you ordinarily anticipate to be. You will discover heaps of grants and organizations devoted to give absolutely free teaching for all. The inquiry anyway is: "With innumerable grants openings up for snatch, are there ample for all?" Check out all obvious wiring and electrical connections for indicators of injury like burns, unraveling wires and loose nuts. Make sure the blower motor as part of your furnace or supporter coil is jogging. When the program is set for cooling, the blower motor should be functioning. Otherwise, Test to be sure your indoor unit swap is from the ON posture. The one thing I'd personally insert is usually a comment on the "shade" recommendation. Will not create a shade excessive of your device - or interfere with the air move in almost any way... your unit needs to have 36" distinct about the coils all around. Look at vent link pipe and chimney for rust or gaps. However, there are occassions when environmental conditions threaten to compromise this comfort. These environmental conditions include: Extreme temperatures; only when it's either too hot or too cold Humidity Dust particles along with allergens inside the environment. Good air conditioning services do the most beautiful to regulate these conditions to successfully are comfortable inside the home. Here, are a few the benefits that you're walking when you invest in quality HVAC services. To get started with, installing heating systems within the house helps maintain the house warm over the colder months. There is nothing that might be more disorienting than hitting the hay in a cold house on the winter night. The most uncomfortable part has taken a bath with cold water inside colder months. Water and house heating systems assist you to keep warm and get away from infections that will result from the cold temperature. Secondly, AC can be quite beneficial in relation to cooling down the temperatures through the summer months. Temperatures get superb especially outside during summer. It seamless comfort to step within the house and obtain refreshing cooler temperatures. A good air cooling system inside the house regulates the temperatures as to what is suitable for those seasons. Air conditioning systems have the capacity to remove dust particles and many types of other types of allergens on the environment. There are those who are allergic to pollen, dust as well as other particles from your environment. im in a p bad situation- a friend got a betta fish recently and put him in a bowl, no filter or heater. theres a 50/50 chance she wont be able to keep him and im want to take him in if thats the case but i dont have any cycled tanks ready (i do have a heater, filter, water conditioner, etc.) and if she does keep him, she probs wont take good care of him- ive been trying to convince her to buy at least a 2.5 gal with no luck. any advice?
best advice woud be to take the fish anyways and do a fish-in cycle~ bettas tend to be able to handle it (though its definitely a lot of wc and more work for you) and imo any betta in a tank with a heater and filter is better than a betta in a bowl whether the tank is cycled or not.
also, if you’re still nervous about fish-in cycling, maybe you can start seeding a filter with one of your tanks? :p even if you dont end up with the fish, you’ll still have some seeded media/a filter and that’s always handy to have around ^-^also, if your friend doesnt have any interest in upgrading for the sake of the fish, then pitch an upgrade to your friend for your friend. tell her that she can get more decor for a 2.5 and it’s still pretty small~ maybe take a piece of paper and cut out how big the foot print of the tank would be and find a place she might be able to put it to give her an idea of how small it would still be, even compared to the bowl. maybe encourage her to try live plants and sand if she likes natural stuff or let her know that they make so many different colors of gravel and plants nowawadys and the tank can match her room/decor! i understand that fish aren’t just pretty things on a shelf or table, but if pitching an upgrade as more aethetically pleasing for the owner helps to persuade said owner than i dont see anything wrong with playing up the “fish tanks make wonderful centerpieces!” type of mindset. especially when people tend to take care of things that they like, ya know? maybe she’ll keep up with maintenance if she wants to have a nice looking tank?whatever happens i hope the fish gets a nice warm tank in the future

Hello! Sorry if it was asked before, but I'm thinking of getting bettas and have a 60l fish tank. I figure most people suggest 30l for a betta so I thought maybe it's possible to install a divider in the middle and get 2 bettas? Would it have to be opaque? Would I need to get 2 heaters? Is this even possible, or a really bad idea...?
Hello there Anon! It hasn’t been asked before, but if you’ve ever got a question (even if it’s been asked+answered before) don’t hesitate to ask! :)Is it possible to install a divider in the middle and get 2 bettas? Is this even possible, or a really bad idea…? 60l is about 15 US gallons, so 30L is roughly 7.5 US gallons, and that’s a great size for a betta! :D You could definitely do a divided tank if you wanted to ^-^ I know that some keepers are either very anti-divided tank or have had bad experiences with divided tanks. However, I’ve met just as many people who have had no problems with a divided tank. More info on this below.Would it have to be opaque?Yes! more info on that below :)Would I need to get 2 heaters?2 heaters is a good idea :p It allows the water to heat more evenly ^-^If you only wanted 1 heater, though, i’d say to put it either in the filter (if possible) or near the middle of the tank.2 filters is also a good idea! either 2 small hobs, or 2 small sponge filters :p If you used a mini canister filter, you could put the intake on one side and the output on the other to direct the water’s flow, though :p in a divided tank, 2 filters ensures that the water on both sides is filtered evenly and there are less dead spots ^-^ If you only wanted 1 filter, though, I’d recommend putting it near the middle of the tank or moving the filter between both sections at least once a week, to help lessen the chance of dead spots in the tank.’more info on that below’The risks you take with a divided tank are:1 bettas getting around the divider2 illess spreading from one betta to another3 stressed fishTo mitigate these risks:1 bettas getting around the divider- silicone in a permanent divider (usually a glass or acrylic panel. These types of dividers can have drilled holes to allow water circulation between the two sections or can be left solid, creating two completely separate tanks)- ensure that the divider you use has no gaps around the sides, and isn’t easily pushed over or moved- keep the water level low and the divider high (some fish will jump over the divider, so keeping the water level lower and using a divider thats as tall as possible will help keep your fish in their designated sections. Short-finned bettas are more prone to jumping than long-finned bettas.)2 illess spreading from one betta to another- use a permanent divider with no drilled holes- quarantine any new tank editions prior to adding them to the tank3 stressed fish- don’t use a clear divider (bettas that can see each other may become stressed by constantly flaring and displaying)- don’t house 1 male next to 1 female unless you use a permanent divider with no water circulation holes (I’ve heard that males and females shouldn’t share water, and I’ve also heard that males and females sharing water is fine but I don’t know who’s right since I haven’t seen any scientific evidence that either side it correct, so I err on the side of caution in this situation and dont recommend housing males and females in divided tanks that share water)/* If anyone has a divided tank and would like to share some tips, or corrections, please feel free to leave a comment, reblog, or let me know! :) */

Anything under 5 gallons is too small for a betta, i know 2.5 is the *minimum minimum* but it is the same as putting your betta to a bucket and calling it a day. They need space. Plus a "tank" that small can't hold a stable cycle and is more difficult to keep as, Let's say a proper 10 g tank
aight so...i wrote this big long thing (i’m a really wordy person, and i ramble, so bare with me) when this ask got sent like a month and a half ago. i typed it up on my phone, but mobile tumblr does this thing where if you take more than x minutes to write a reply, it doesnt let you save what you’ve written as a draft and it default posts to your main. and then it just doesnt post ever...so now i’m here, on desktop, to write you this long-overdue reply, Anon.this ask came shortly after a post/comment/reblog on tank size recommendation, so i kind of want assume that this same person who was discussing with me sent this ask, but i’m not going to assume but this person asked on anon... I’m currently writing a long-winded caresheet about bettas (which i plan to post for peer-review tomorrow), and so far i’ve written this about Tank Size:******“2.5gallons:The absolute minimum, I do not recommend keeping a betta in anything less thanthis because even in a cycled 2.5, keeping a *stable* cycle is very difficult, and requires more frequent water changes (1-2x per week at least). In a tank this small, you’ll mostlikely need to buy an adjustable heater as well, since the smallest (trustworthy)heaters on the market are 7-7.5 watts, and depending on where you live or howhot/cold you keep your house/room, the heat will fluctuate too often, or be toohot or too cold since the volume of water is quite small. A 2.5 gallon bettatank is doable.5 gallons:A great median for those who want to give their bettas a wonderful environment, but may be cramped on space, move around often, or whose living arrangementshave aquarium-related restrictions. A cycled 5 gallon tank with a bettagenerally requires a water change 1x a week at least. A 5 gallon tank also keeps a more stable cycle than a 2.5 gallon, and over-heating is less of an issue/concern. I still recommend anadjustable heater (I’ll always recommend an adjustable heater), though, as I’vefound that even with an appropriately-sized preset heater/non-adjustableheater, the temperature fluctuates too often and by too much. A 5 gallon is aperfectly good choice!10+ gallons:A palace! Your new betta would love to have a 10+ gallon tank! They’ll swimover every inch of it, I promise its not too big :) A fantastic choice for thosethat have the space and can afford to set up a 10 gallon or larger with all thebells and whistles (more décor, larger filter, stronger heater, etc. than the smaller tanks). Your fish will thank you and brag to all their fish friends that they ended up with some pretty sweet digs.note: If you feel you can’t give your betta a 10+ gallon tank, and you can onlyafford a 2.5 or 5 gallon setup (or something inbetween), that DOES NOT mean I think you’re a bad fish parent ❤ as long as you can provide the basicnecessities your fish requires and keep on top of water quality, and then do *what* youcan, *when* you can, youre doing it right :) (Never stop improving!! never stop learning!!) Maybe it’ll be a few months before you can buy your fish thatnew hide or a few extra plants, or maybe you’ll have to wait til xmas or yourbday to be able to afford a larger tank if that’s what you want, and that’sokay. As long as you do the best within your means (provided your animal’sbasic needs are met), that’s all your fish would ask of you ❤”******note: i address properly decorating/filtering/heating/etc in the rest of the care sheet. this is literally JUST the section on tank size.1. addressing that “2.5 gallons is the *minimum minimum*” statement anon made:its just *the minimum*...when you’re saying how small is too small and how big is too big without any defining *objective* factors, then it becomes subjective and opinionated. I addressed the cycling issue above in what I wrote for the care sheet. imo a 2.5 gallon is doable. is it amazin, perfect, the best you can give your betta? no...but neither is a 5 gallon .-. so, if your standard of minimum is based upon your opinion of what looks too cramped, then thats okay, and good on you for promoting a 5 gallon as a minimum tank. and i’m not saying that sarcastically, either, i really do wish i could promote 5 gallons as the minimum tank size, but when i’m explaining fish care to someone in the middle of the store, i have to give them objective facts (like the ones listed above under the 2.5 gallon section)To someone who thinks that .5 gallon bowl at petsmart is okay, who is standing in the aisle with betta in hand, me going up to them and telling them 5 gallons is the minimum just cuz its bigger isn’t going to change their mind 90% of the time. with a 2.5 its still on the small side, but at least i can give them objective facts. and i DO say “but if you get a 5.5 gallon its 2$ more for 2x the size, and a 10 gallon is 4x the size for that same 2$ more! and it’ll be easier to heat, cycle, and you’ll have to do less wc on it :) plus more room for decor!! decorating a tank is almost as fun as picking out your new fish!! :DD” so dont get me wrong there, please. but so many people equate bigger tank with more work, suggesting a “proper 10 gallon tank” to someone standing in that checkout line with their fish, some cheap food, a bowl, and a plastic plant? if they took my advice i’d buy a friggin lottery ticket. (I actually think this is what the post was about originally, that one i was having the discussion on before this ask arrived...if i find it, i’ll give a link to it)2. addresing the “it is the same as putting your betta to a bucket and calling it a day.” statement:they make 5 gallon buckets so i see no problems there [somewhat sarcastic, somewhat serious tone]. Just because a tank isn’t glass or acrylic doesn’t mean you cant keep a fish in it imo. Plenty of people use tub-tanks so i dont see why a bucket would be so bad so long as it meets those minimum requirements (2.5+, 76-82, filtered, good food, appropriate decor, lighting a must since the bucket probably isnt see-through and fish shouldnt live in complete and total darkness imo) and the material doesnt leach chemicals, I dont really see a problem? i mean, most buckets are taller than they are wide, but so are some glass/acrylic tanks (fluval spec 3)...i get what you’re trying to say here (i think), though: just throwing a fish in some water and calling it good ain’t good, aint gonna cut it. just like you dont want to suggest 2.5 as the “minimum minimum” because you believe it is inadequate for a betta.3. adressing the “They need space. Plus a "tank" that small can't hold a stable cycle and is more difficult to keep as, Let's say a proper 10 g tank” statement:pretty much agree with this part. smaller tanks dont hold cycles as easily as larger tanks, just the way it is (this does NOT tank into account overstocking, uncycled/cycling tanks, or chemical/parameter spikes). I agree completely that a 10 gallon tank will hold a much more stable cycle than a 2.5 or 5 gallon will. especially if the stock is the same (i.e. one betta). I also agree that bettas need space, and would like to add that longer tanks > taller tanks, since bettas (and most other fish) swim side-to-side and not up and down. a larger tank (again, same stock) will also require less wc/maintenance than a smaller tank. but, imma reiterate, thats hard to explain to the betta+bowl person you see walkin around at your local lfs/lps/chain store...in most people’s mind larger = more work, even tho WE (and hopefully all of fishblr/bettablr) know that that’s not true, even if we do our best to explain that to the general/uneducated/betta-ignorant populace. In the end, i think maybe you (anon) and me have different approaches to the same goal. we both want to improve quality of life for bettas, debunk myths about them, educate people about them, make sure people do right by their pets.i just want to change everyone’s mind first, get more people up to speed and get them out of Bowls-Are-Okay-For-Fish-Land, steer them away from those awful glass prisons and gimmicky tanks and THEN talk about how they can really spoil their pet, how to improve as a Pet ParentTM and give their pet The BestTM. let the water heat up really slowly so to speak (like hot tub, or a lobster pot), since i think I’ll be able to change more minds that way: slowly, steadily...thats what changed my mind, and from personal experience this is what changes the minds of others more easily. If anyone has anything to add, rebutt, comment, reply, etc. please feel free to #told yall i was long-winded and rambly #still dont know how to add hashtags to these dang replies ;-; #fishblr #bettablr #Ronireplies
