i started to write up a whole thing about marlo and the hero’s journey after making a one-off comment that lodged in my brain and got just about halfway through before realizing... if it holds out for them, it’s entirely the process of their becoming the villain. the departure is octo valley; initiation is the deepsea metro; the return is... whatever comes after that. which i find fascinating because i wrote marlo with the explicit intention of the experience corrupting them, making them unable to return. so. like. conceivably, if the ‘known world’ is where they’re good, and the ‘unknown world’ is where they’re bad, and they can’t go back to the known world...
that’s tasty.
