16) Name some media you connect with queerly
*Looks at the spate of Hannibal posts coming up in the queue* um
I mean, Peter Pan is the obvious answer, because I’m obsessed with it and I wrote my damn thesis on it and it’s got queer interpretation going on all over the place: the suspended queer time of Neverland; the homosociality of the Lost Boys; Peter’s perverse refusal of sexuality; the fact that Peter is played by a female actress in the stage adaptation; there are freakin nonbinary fairies!!! Sometimes I think the only reason I feel the way I do about gender is because I watched the 1960 Mary Martin version at an impressionable age. There’s just nothing quite like watching an adult woman tell people that she’s a boy and seeing everyone else go “yes, obviously.”
Man, what else? The entirety of MCR had a massive impact on my conceptualization of (gender)queerness, with their goth fem-masc rockstar vibes, and Gerard Way’s whole long-haired Freddie Mercury-esque thing, and I’m also one of those people who think The Great Gatsby is inherently queer because come on, Nick is pining after Gatsby and hooking up with Mr. McKee and Jordan Baker is absolutely queer-coded.
And ah, Hannibal…While the show itself is brimming with queerness, what goes on in my head while I watch the show is some deeply layered, viscerally felt combination of gender envy, gender identification, and profligate bisexuality directed varyingly at Will Graham, Hannibal’s wardrobe, Hannibal stabbing Will with a knife, Will dripping blood, Will Graham, and Will Graham.
