rare instance of me being actually really happy with a design

actually gonna word vomit about it;

this came to me the mili, picosecond ive finished colouring the third redesigns which is now completely out of a date of ever seeing the sun so have fun mulling over that lol .

anyways so basically, ive discovered this technique of limiting to 3 or 2 themes for each character, to which i built apon with an overall theme for the whole media and have it paired up with the characters individual theme. ive decides to try for a more flexible or abstract dressing theme for tam, being duality since yknow her hybrid species/transitioning species kinda thing (in hindsight it shouldve been asymmetry but whatevs), the rest was roadsigns and scout.

originally it was going to be a flower, then it was going to be melded skulls and roses but just decided on a skull, the back of her head was a weak resemblance of this broken solar panel thing ? still dont know, but it was cool; this was supposed to be an attempt at symbolism of her trying to weaponise her unique kind of loneliness, being a hybrid and having unconventional origins in the sense of her childhood and the abyssals, trying to replicate a dishonering danger with the horns coming out as well, stabbing away any approachers. the weird cut snout with teeth was supposed to be the top half of a mouth but i thought it would be funnier if it was more a collector showcase base for her weird teeth collection fixation, all from the underground visits john used to take her with when she wasnt older and sicker, a rare interlude of her bleak-less worldview and dull colours.

the spikes on the skull is actually sharpened loose metal from railings, poles, machines, etc, and she uses to have more but she snapped them off when the gun jammed. its meant to be a transition from the skull to the metal plate and was meant to replicate the more grandiose version in my head.

scout: it’s blasphemous to not discuss scout and his association with baseball. and i can get into the thematic elements of scout and baseball and being america’s favorite pastime (and after writing the baseball post i could genuinely go into it) but i don’t think here is the place to do so. all of that to say, the kid can hit a ball. he gave football a shot, didn’t really like it. i also am a firm believer that scout is shockingly flexible. he can do like, six backflips from a stand still. took him a minute to do it successfully, but he did accomplish it!

pyro: pyro is not a sports fan. pyro will do athletic things; take a jog, go for a bike ride, hike, hell, they’ll rock climb if they get the urge! they just don’t really find themselves attracted to competitive full contact sports. they will watch the olympics, and they just hope everyone has a good time while they’re out there. the only real sport pyro would be willing to participate in, without any coaxing from teammates, is a cheese rolling race. pyro would absolutely line up to chase a 20 pound wheel of cheese down a steep hill and potentially break their ankles and back when they inevitably fall.

saiki: probably doesnt use labels but if he ever did, biromantic and a-spec. which i honestly think is as "canon" as it could possibly be without directly saying it. hes implied to be feeling SOMETHING towards teruhashi close to the end and is at the very least attracted to her, and he definitely has a crush on satou and outright puts them in a who-likes-who chart. he had no reason to include himself in the love triangle chart if he wasnt involved in it 😭 i dont at all think asou was trying to write a bi-ace character and im aware him liking satou is a gag, but gags are generally canon in saiki k or at least have some lore behind them. i might even say that hes some form of demiromantic ? definitely lines up with his feelings for teruhashi, and i know he doesnt know satou well but hes literally a psychic so "knowing" a person is a lot different for him so i doubt you could describe his sexuality so simply. and these two are the only people he ever shows any romantic interest in AT ALL.

teruhashi: bisexual, also probably as canon as it could be without being canon 😭 she definitely does love saiki towards the end, shown pretty obviously by her expressing she would rather be with him even when hes just sitting there (canonically what he always does) than be with someone rich or talkative. she was also so clearly attracted to aiura, argue with the wall. saiki is her first and only actual crush and before that she literally pictured herself just marrying some rich guy she didnt care about, so i would argue she was probably dealing with some form of comphet although its still mostly because she couldnt picture herself truly opening up to anyone yet

akechi: queer, and i picture him going into long rants about why specific labels dont fit him but he probably knows a lot about them. we get no evidence of his sexuality other than his attraction to teruhashi (which we do know for a fact depends on sexuality because anyone who is canonically or presumably not attracted to girls does not show attraction to her even if they do have a short reaction)

yuu is SOOO important to me. like they can be scarily observant, but they can also not notice things to a frustrating degree. they are such a great character even if they are meant to be projected upon and. dare i say? one of the best written?? maybe thats my bias towards protagonists talking but. GOD. they HAVE THEIR OWN PERSONALITY!! you can project onto them all you want! that’d the point! but they are so much more than just. a blank canvas made to be painted upon. they are so full of character, even if they aren’t always loud and obvious about it. i think what i like most about them (along with the other characters in twst) is that they aren’t just one characteristic. a lot of times in media characters will be reduced to one or two basic personality traits and they just. stick to that label. but the characters in twst, especially (imo) yuu, are so flexible. vil is another great example. he DOES act like a stiff, cold figurehead (because he’s been cornered into the role) but he can LAUGH!! HE SMILES!!! that one birthday card of his where he gets all covered in cake. youd think it was out of character for him to laugh about it if you didnt know him outside of his house warden persona. but he did!! he even joked about taking a photo with trey after to ‘commemorate (his) bravery’!!!! UGH. sorry this got off topic. can you tell i like twst.

I'll try not to repeat anything I've said, but Im also not looking at a list so some things may be repeated

General Colette HC's

Colette is generally a messy person, but she can be organized if she really wants to. The Gift Shops stock room and her fan merch collection are very organized with pretty labels and everything. Her room however...

If Colette put in the effort, she'd actually be an amazing artist. But her mind runs a mile a minute and she just needs to captre the important parts in her sketches, so its all very messy and almost crack-posty in nature.

Colette is a nail biter and with her extremely sharp teeth, her nails look like a mess most of the time. Thats part of why she loves wearing oversized sleeves that cover her hands

The other reason she likes wearing oversized sleeves is because theyre just fun to play with. If shes bored and mildly annoyed with you, she will slap you playfully with her sleeves. Hopefully not her usual jacket sleeves though since there are buckles on that one...

Actually shes just a chewer in general. She often has a little rubber pen grip on her that she turned into a chew toy for when shes feeling anxious or (more likely) restless.

Colette is a Stationary fiend. She has so much stationary of so many things. She does use a good chunk of it (only saving a few pieces as 'remembrance') but she has so many of them that it just never seems to end.

Colette totally has stickers plastered all over her phone and her laptop (if she has one)

She also has a lot of phone charms dangling off her phone. There are so many charms on that thing that it makes for a viable weapon.

Now that Colette is a staff of the gift shope, she always gets TWO of every merch item they sell. One to keep as is and one to ask (read: badger) the brawler to sign. This can get super irritating to some but some love the attention.

She absolutely HATES scalpers. Mr. Griff tried pulling that off one time, and the others had to physically pry her off of him to get her to stop.

Colette is tortured with the knowledge of all the juicy scoops in the park, but not being able to post about it anywhere because it will be traced to her. Sometimes writing crack with the exact opposite news helps but not always.

Colette legitimately might be made of rubber. This girl is so flexible and regularly does weir poses that would make anyone wince in pain (unless of course they cannot feel that pain or can do it easily)

Colette has tattooed the little grafitti/spray design Otis made for her on herself. She tattooed it on her ribs to keep it 'as close to her heart without doing it on the chest' but she kind of wishes she got it on an arm so ist easier to show off (I HC that Otis makes all the brawler sprays as gifts)

Colette has mastered the art of reading naughty stuff in public. One time Willow tried to peek cause she was bored and she didnt interact with Colette for a full month after.

Colette is generally really open and expressive, so it throws people for a loop when she fools them by acting the exact opposite of what shes feeling. Usually this is just for a prank or game.

Colette has a dedicated notebook for wild conspiracy theories she sees in the fandom. She also regularly tries to test them out so she can (privately) confirm or debunk them.

Has the overall story of Loose Stitches changed significantly since you started drawing it?

BOY HAS IT. ITS LITERALLY CHANGING AS WE SPEAK. anyway this got long so. under da cut

so, like most stories, it's changed a lot since the beginning. i was technically drawing it years before i started on the comic you see before you nowwww HOWEVER i get what u mean so i wont post any old art of atchkie or anything to make a point

TO GET TO YOUR QUESTION: since i started drawing and posting it, things have changed SIGNIFICANTLYYYYY. for example, hanheppi culture (which wont be relevant for years) was basically nonexistent when i started. the only reason you guys know hanheppi people and loose stitches are related is because i literally didnt have a name picked out for the hanheppi, so i had to file them under "loose stitches related" thinking i probably wouldnt post much about them anyway. and ppl started noticing that because i got around to developing them ON THIS BLOG WHILE POSTING LOOSE STITCHES. lol

as for the characters, they've changed too in a lot of ways. dotty's whole deal was generally outline before but i filled it in over the last few years and now it's like. genuinely could be its own novel lol.

ATCHKIE'S personality has been kind of hard for me to get a handle on because they are a kind of person who i don't have much in common with. but i think i'm getting a better idea of them as time goes on.

Reg Willow and Eden are still being workshopped cuz they're gonna appear later on and i haven't written them very much, so they're actively changing as we speak.

and then of course the entirety of part 2 has undergone major changes and is still actively shifting in huge ways. i see part 1 as basically set up and foreshadowing and getting to know the MC's and part 3 (if it can be called that, im prolly gonna break up part 3 into different chunks tho) as the pay off/explanation portion.

but part 2 is kind of more like a road trip adventure that the characters take on the way to trying to find things out about themselves and their goals. they run into a bunch of weirdos and its basically just the part where i get to have a ton of weird shit happen and then they run away. half of it is not even plot relevant and i'm SO EXCITED FOR IT!!!

and because it's way more flexible and is basically just a "author gets a free for all to do whatever it wants" card, it changes rapidly and often. I've brought in characters from past stories to fill in spaces, and i've combined certain plot points and storybeats. i've cut shit i didn't think was fun and then added entire towns just for 1 scene i wanna do. so thats probably the part thats changing the most.

other minor things that have changed is the near spontaenous creation of characters like professor silk, leilah, and mia. what happened with them was that i had points in the script where characters would talk and then i realized that if they were gonna have all these interactions with characters, they should probably be reoccurring ones instead of a bunch of one offs. Now professor silk is a minor but recurring characters, and Leilah was upgraded to full on girlfriend almost on a whim. Mia was the most spontaneous one tho.

in the scene where Mia throws dotty off the balcony, that was SUPPOSED to be Leilah and just some random friend atchkie was hanging out with. but since Mia had appeared before i was like fuck it, why introduce a whole new friend when i can reuse what was a one off character? and then while blocking out the fight it was just easier for me to imagine someone accidentally throwing dotty via strings than Leilah pushing them off in the struggle like i'd planned.

i could keep going on with stuff like this but the tl;dr is: yeagh. shit is changing constantly and all the little changes end up with the finished product being vastly different from the start.

and thats why i love serialized stories. there's an inherent jank to it that i cant get enough of on both the process side and the reader side.

-after that long long LONGGG lecture, its kinda stuck to your head now.

Yeaaaaah i was originally gonna be getting chiori to just c2 -> c4 and then get c0 xilonen but i honestly was like. thinking about her kit and teams and whether i actually had any imminent need for a flexible support as is since this account is overall so stacked and with so many options to choose from anyway (whereas xilonen absolutely shows her value in any less invested accounts much stronger) and then the way i was feeling kinda eh with the execution of her animations even if i liked her design and it just wasnt the vibe whereas. I HAVE MY SOLID REASONS FOR MY OMEGA/ALPHA HEADCANONS, and tbh they're flexible depending on how i feel on the day.

Eddie should be an omega in my OWN opinion because:

He voluntarily has this whole little pack of people younger than him, his own lil pups, adopted cause he's not gotten laid (YET, he stands firm on it being YET, it'll happen he's sure of it, someday) but he has pups so he's content.

His room is a cluttered chaotic mess of things. Are they all his things? maybe, maybe not, that room could easily be messy because he's keeping things within reach so he can easily make a nest out of all that stuff when the need strikes.

He saw two scared freshmen and decided "imma adopt them" and then did. He's more in touch with how people are feeling, and able to comfort them without being too overbearing or pushy, emotions may be tricky but he's really good at the soft ones that make people feel comforted when they're upset, he's good at being silly to make people laugh. He's soft.

He's touchy, and struggles with keeping to personal space. He bundles up in layers upon layers for comfort rather than preening and dressing solely to look good.

While he's loud, and expressive, he's also very quick to hide in a corner when shit gets real scary, pls someone protecc him.

Steve should be an alpha in my own opinion because:

He has followers. People who crowd around him just to bask in his popularity. Not people he adopted, just people who want to be him, want to be like him. King Steve. He has natural charisma. He's a presence that stands out.

He's a tank of a human being. He takes hit after hit after hit that should definitely take a person out but he just keeps coming back.

He's a caretaker in bed, protective, and comforting, mf held Nancy's hand good lord, yet he's still in charge, he's on top.

His pack adopted him, yet they still look to him as the protector, he wasnt adopted like a beta without a pack, he is an alpha, they didnt have an alpha, he's now their alpha.

He makes sure he looks good, his hair is always on point, his skin looks good, his body is always in good shape (soft but the type of softeness hiding those muscles that make you bite your own fist), he's trying to impress people, omega's dont need to impress, they need to be the ones impressed.

He doesnt seem to need a lot of material possessions, doesnt have enough clutter or personal belongings to make a nest, and he doesnt seem to put much thought into keeping other peoples belongings either.

Like i know we like to HC that the vest is in Steve's closet, but if it was left upto Steve, it's absolutely been left either in that RV, or in a random corner in The Warzone. One of the kids might have grabbed it after he left it, but if Steve was on his own? It's gone.

there's a lot of ambigious traits too that could be placed in both the Alpha or the omega column, but the majority of actual canon behaviours rather than the fanon people shove on these boys (Mr 'Oi Shitheads!'
