prompt: anything with yami bakura having to interact awkwardly with the friend group
"I think it will be good for him."
Ryou looked over at Yugi where he stood beside him at the kitchen counter, arranging the hors d'oeuvres they had just finished making onto a plate.
"Maybe, but what about everyone else?" Ryou felt his heart race as he heard a clamor of voices from the living room - but then calmed as he realized the sound was laughter. "You do remember what happened last time, right?"
"Yeah, of course - but he was still with Zorc back then, and he did promise he'd be good."
Ryou looked at Yugi incredulously. "And you believe him?"
"Well, I think his definition of 'good' is probably a bit different from ours, but... yeah, I think he meant that. Look, Ryou - if anyone understands, it's me. You can handle him fine, but you're worried how it's going to go with everyone else, so you keep him away. I did the same thing with Atem, but now he's great friends with everyone."
Ryou wanted to argue, but Yugi looked up and him with such earnest reassurance, he couldn't bring himself to. "Alright," he agreed, "I will give him a chance."
Yugi smiled at him again - he really did have the most comforting presence Ryou had ever encountered, and although it did not totally allay his doubts, he did feel more ready to face the rest of the night. They each picked up a tray to carry to the living room, where Bakura was perched atop the Monster World table, surrounded by the rest of the group who were sitting in the chairs around it. A short distance away, Atem and Kaiba sat at the coffee table, playing Duel Monsters.
The rest of the group had decided to pre-game tabletop night while Yugi and Ryou had been making the food - and Hedbanz had been the game of choice. Someone had suggested Duel Monsters cards instead of the game's standard fare, and the crossover hit of the century had successfully kept the group entertained for going on an hour.
"Umm..." Téa squinted at Bakura. "It's not a very good card, I don't think."
Tristan nodded. "Yeah, it requires tributing, but it doesn't have any effects, and its attack is pretty low."
Bakura's brow furrowed in concentration as he thought. "Dark Magician," he answered.
"Nope," Joey replied. "Ehh... it's creepy. I don't like it."
Bakura rolled his eyes. "Well that doesn't tell me anything. You thought Sangan was creepy."
"Because he is!" Joey insisted.
"Sangan is adorable!" Bakura shot back indignantly. "I don't hear you complaining about Kuriboh! What does Kuriboh have that Sangan doesnt?!"
Ryou could not keep an amused smile from rising to his face as he set the tray of food down across from Bakura. "It's your favorite card."
Bakura grinned. "Ah! Earl of Demise!" He then abruptly turned to Marik with a scowl. "You said it was a card no one should have!"
Marik scoffed. "Yeah, and meant it."
Before Bakura could lunge at him, Ryou caught his attention. "Want to get down from the table so I can help you get set up?"
Bakura hopped down from the table, surprisingly agreeable. "Ooh! Shrimp!" He exclaimed as he saw the cocktail platter on the tray, grabbing it and retreating to the edge of the table.
"Are you... eating those with the tails on?" Tristan asked incredulously as he watched Bakura eat.
"Oh, that's not even close to the weirdest thing he eats," Ryou assured them. "Ask him about the soda gummy worm and crisp smoothie he likes to make."
Groans of disgust and revulsion followed, and Ryou couldn't stop himself from laughing - he was filled with a sudden relief. No longer was Bakura a threat, strung along by an unfathomable force of evil that was leading him to usher in the apocalypse - he was simply himself, the strangest member of their group of friends. If Ryou was being honest, he was slightly jealous that Bakura had taken the title of Weirdest Friend out from under him... but being able to play games with all of his friends free of fear had always been one of his greatest dreams.
"Shall we get started, then?" Bakura asked as he settled in at the table behind a game master screen, arranging his dice in uneven rows.
"Lead the way, Dark Master!" Yugi chirped excitedly as he sat down at the table next to Ryou, motioning Kaiba and Atem over to join them.
"I hope you're ready," Ryou said as he set up his own game supplies. "Because the character I made is going to demolish your monsters."
Bakura smirked. "We'll see about that. On with the game!"
