okay, but neil saying that 'i'll be your mirror' is crowley's favourite song has me so fucked up, especially after realising the song came out 1967. you know, the john-lennon-hair-crowley and holy-water-in-a-tartan-flask year,,, like, i'm thinking of him right after 'you go too fast for me, crowley', hearing this new song (which is about loving someone, and seeing the best in them, and seeing parts of yourselves in each other, and completing each other, and them always being there for you) - and he just goes Yeah, I Like This One <3

What are five pros and five cons you would give to Hazbin Hotel?
Gonna start with the cons, because I like to end on a positive note.
The Pacing. This was something I had a feeling was going to be a weakness of the show from the time I saw the trailer and learned that the first season was going to involve the next Extermination, especially when it was confirmed the season was only going to be eight episodes long. The twist in the first episode that the next Extermination was happening in half the time helped a little, but it still meant we skipped over months between episodes, with it being implied important stuff did happen that we just didn't see.
While I think it's better than Helluva Boss in balancing it's main cast (I love that show, but the uneven attention given between all of the main characters is one of the biggest issues it has), it still has some trouble with making all the characters feel fully like "people"? Niffty probably being the biggest example, since I love her, but right now she feels more like a living punchline than a real character.
The tone can sometimes be just a little...off with how it feels like we're supposed to feel. Best example being Sir Pentious death. The characters react to it like it was a serious event, because for them, it was...but the death itself was treated as kind of a joke? And I understand the show is a sort of dark comedy, so to an extent I expect stuff like that. But I think at that moment, the switch from "joke" to "you're supposed to seriously grieve this character" felt a bit too abrupt?
This is a completely personal thing, but as I've mentioned before, I don't love the whole sideplot of Sir Pentious having a crush on Cherri Bomb? It felt like it came out of nowhere, whereas most of the other relationships that seem to be a thing in the show were at least given hints in the Pilot. And it's just another example of the pacing being break-neck, since they had Cherri not show up until episode 6 of 8, and then Pentious dies in the finale, so they had basically two episodes (and not even full ones, just some scenes) to try and convince me of a romance, and, maybe it's just my arospec self, but....I couldn't really get convinced at all.
It's kinda hard for me to really think of issues I really have with the show, so I gotta kinda cheat a bit with this last one, since I can't help but wonder if they would've left the scene out had they known from the start of production that they'd get more seasons, but I personally don't love the whole stinger that reveals Pentious ended up in Heaven after Adam killed him? Not so much because I don't like the idea that he ended up there - I like that part. But I kind of feel like his death would have had a bit more impact if the audience did genuinely think he was gone for good for longer than like...fifteen minutes.
And now for the things I loved about Hazbin Hotel
The songs are arguably the biggest highlight of the whole series for me. I don't think there's a single one that I wouldn't happily listen to, whether in or out of context. From what I've seen I apparently don't have as high of an opinion of some songs as others, but I legitimately love all of them. I don't think there's anything I could say about any of the songs in this show that could be considered anything close to a real critique.
All of the characters are an absolute blast to watch. Yes, some of them don't have the most depth so far, but that doesn't change the fact that I just love to watch them whenever they're on screen? And it's not just the main cast, either. Obviously I love all of them, but even with fairly limited screen time, I found myself absolutely adoring whenever I got to see characters like Carmilla Carmine, Zestial, Velvette, and Rosie on screen. And all of the characters are so interesting and fun to imagine in different scenarios. And since I'm a writer, that is one of the biggest pros a series can have.
While the show is arguably more of a comedy, it is actually very good, in my opinion, dealing with some pretty serious topics when it wants to. The biggest example is Angel Dust's struggles with what he goes through thanks to Valentino, but you also have things like Vaggie's past and how her hiding that effected her relationship with Charlie when the truth got revealed. Or the whole thing of how it's implied most of Heaven didn't know about the Exterminations and that being revealed to them caused a lot of tensions, particularly between Emily and Sera. Or even just the whole thing of how Carmilla discovered how to kill Angels...but doesn't want it to be known what she did because she doesn't want to cause a war and lose her daughters, when the whole reason she learned that Angels could be killed was because she wanted to save them.
The character designs are some of the best I've seen in a long time. It really feels like the team took full advantage of the fact that it seems like there's no set rule for how demons can look in their version of hell, and so they went absolutely nuts with it, in the best possible way. Pretty much every single character has an incredibly unique design, and they're all just so fun to see. It makes the whole world feel so much more alive....slightly ironically considering it's the main setting is full of people who are technically all dead.
Outside of the one I mentioned above, I really like how basically all of the relationships in the show are handled, from the romantic to the platonic to the familial. They are all extremely varied and obviously some get more real attention than others, but all are given enough focus and attention that you always get the sense that the characters care for each other very deeply, especially by the end. And because you feel those bonds, you are even more effected by what the characters go through, because you feel like you're part of that group of people who care for one another. And I love that it also applies to the villains, with how Lute was clearly devestated by Adam's death, following the show indicating they were close, but usually showing them in what seemed to be a mostly "professional" relationship.

Midnight rain
PAIRING: JACK HARLOW X READER
GENRE: Angsttttt
A/N: so.... yeah.... i'm a taylor swift fan. I've had a very tiring two weeks, but I wrote this in a rush of inspiration (like almost always lol), I needed to get it out of my system. wondering whether to write a one shot for each midnights song 👀
I UPDATED MY MASTERLIST!!!
Rain, he wanted it comfortable I wanted that pain He wanted a bride I was making my own name Chasing that fame
Behind all that player facade, Jack was in love with love… but that changed when you arrived, because he went from being in love with love to being in love with you, but after a while… that changed again.
You loved him back, but your heart was young and you felt that there was still a lot to experience, you were ambitious and you knew that Jack was too, that's why you believed that it would be many years before the relationship was formalized and you started a comfortable and small life with children and rings on your fingers. However, Jack's whole world had changed when he met you, he felt he had met his destiny, and his ambition to conquer the world turned into an ambition to have a life with you.
That's why, when you opened the medicine drawer and found a small burgundy box with a ring inside, your world fell apart. You ignored it for as long as you could, convinced yourself that maybe Jack was saving it for a friend, after all, he hadn't tried to hide it very well. You avoided every invitation to romantic dinners, especially if it was in a fancy restaurant, fearing that moment would come.
It came like a postcard Picture perfect, shiny family Holiday, peppermint candy But for him it's every day
“You should have known that the day you met his family”, you thought every day since you left him. A happy family, his parents together, a good relationship with his brother, joking about grandchildren at the first family dinner. You smiled and thought: "Surely he is thinking in ten years, maybe fifteen..." and you managed to fool yourself for a while.
My boy was a montage A slow-motion, love potion Jumping off things in the ocean I broke his heart 'cause he was nice
There was a moment where you couldn't help it anymore, and you just let it happen. Jack knelt on the kitchen floor, the burgundy box in his hands. Your eyes filled with tears and his chest heaved with happiness, but it was quickly replaced when without even asking the question, you started to shake your head: your tears weren't from happiness. His smile fell. It was all over.
He was sunshine, I was midnight rain
The first time you saw Jack, his smile was bright and his body exuded a comfortable warmth when he hugged you. Always happy, always laughing, that's what you loved most about him: his joy and optimism. At the same time, your body was a true reflection of yourself, running your icy fingers down Jack's back, giving him chills, but making him laugh; the lyrics of your songs mostly sad, letting the pain inspire you most of your life; always behind him and holding his hand, afraid of new people, but feeling safe every time Jack introduced you to someone hugging you from the side, with a protective arm around your shoulders, letting you know you were never alone. Sometimes people joked about how different you guys were, even your star signs were complete opposites. The moon and the sun had met, if only for a brief moment.
I guess sometimes we all get Just what we wanted, just what we wanted
Five years after ending your relationship, the night after Jack's wedding, you won your fifth Grammy, for your most successful album to date, the one that had broken all records, both your personal ones and those of the rest of the music scene. You gave a speech with tears in your eyes, your heart overflowing with feelings… you and Jack: each had gotten what you wanted most in life one night apart.
Jack watched your speech on the couch at home, cuddling with his wife, and heaved a deep sigh when he heard you thank your past loves for being the great inspiration for your album.
And he never thinks of me Except when I'm on TV And I never think of him Except on midnights like this

Hello!! Can I request an angsty Christmas break up fic with Speirs? Thank you and have a wonderful holiday!!❤
Lonely This Christmas
"You just can't help yourself can you?"
"Oh don't you start on me Ron," you snapped, throwing your handbag on the side table and stomping into the kitchen. You didn't spare a glance at him, but you could hear him marching in behind you.
"Why can't you ever just keep your opinions to yourself?" He huffed, leaning against the counter and crossing his arms.
"He was in the wrong." You stated, turning to face him and meeting his gaze stoicly.
"For Chrissakes it doesn't matter if he was wrong or not. You couldn't spend one fucking day with my family without causing a scene."
"Trust you to say that," you snarled, "you never stick up for me anyway."
"Oh here we go with the sob story," he mocked, "why would I stand up for you when it's always you that's making a scene?"
"How was I making a scene? I just called him out on his bullshit."
"Whether you qdmit it or not, its obvious you've always been jealous of my brother and his wife. And for fuck sake it's Christmas day, you don't think you could have just let it go, just this once maybe?"
"Why should I sit there and not speak up when he's talking shit?"
"Because its the holidays," he exclaimed, "you couldn't even let my mother and my family have fucking Christmas dinner together without ruining it. It's just so typical of you, I shouldn't even be surprised anymore."
"Well if I'm so awful then why are you still with me?" You hissed, arching an eyebrow at him.
"I ask myself that same question every fucking time."
Your eyes widened at that, nails digging into your palms harshly. The silence stretched thickly between you, both of you refusing to even look at each other. You thought of all the good times you'd had together, all the laughter and fun you'd had. But then your mind drifted to all the bad times, all the arguments, the shouting, the pointed barbs and petty pleasure at hurting each other. The bad had started to outweigh all the good lately, and it was wearing you both out.
"Then perhaps this should be the last time you ask yourself that question," you said coldly, turning your head away from him so you wouldn't have to look into his eyes.
"Yes," he replied, "perhaps you're right."
"I'll pack up my things and leave tomorrow," you said roboticly, "nowhere will be open at this time of night so I'll sleep in the spare room."
"Suit yourself," he said after a moment, before turning and walking out of the kitchen without a backwards glance. You watched him go, your throat tight and your eyes stinging with the weight of unshed tears. Your heart ached. How had it come to this? Where had it all gone so horribly wrong?
You turned on the radio to drown out the suffocating silence. The first song that came on was Lonely This Christmas, and oh if that didn't make the gashes on your heart just a little bit deeper. You reached to turn the radio off again, but you stopped yourself, instead sliding to the ground and letting yourself wallow in the misery of both the song and the disastrous end of your relationship.
Some Christmas that was.

Summer of Whump #4: Escape
Warnings: drugging, vomit, blood
Villain's face was smacked against the roof of a "Villain Containment Practices" AKA a VCP car. He groaned and elbowed the ruthless Hero who dared to lay hands on him.
"Calm down," the unlucky Hero seethed. "Things will be easier for you."
"But not for you," Villain sassed which resulted in the hero lifting his head and smacking his nose hard.
"Will you mind?!" Villain yelled. He felt blood pouring out of his nose and draining into his mouth. Broken. He groaned, annoyed.
"Serves you right," the hero taunted close to Villain's ear. She pulled on his earlope and clicked the handcuffs into place.
The second that Villain was settled into the VCP car, he started blabbering and wiping his nose against his sleeve.
"Okay," he said between wipes. "So here's how it happened. I was literally walking home, minding my own beeswax, when this homesless guy comes up to me. Now, me? I am very clean and I like my cleanliness. So anyways, this guy comes up to me and now, he is begging for money and I'm like, 'Dude, personal space here'. I mean, of course this guy has no etiquette skills so he attacks me. Now, my wallet was in my pocket. Still is, for your information, you can find some nice cash in there. Anyways, this guy he touches my wallet and tries to grabs it- wait, guys, I shouldn't be being arrested. It was self-defense! Hey, hey!" Villain reached his hand forward and jostled one of the hero's head. "Wakey, wakey," he said. The hero turned and scowled at him.
"Did you hear me?" Villain asked. "It was self-defense."
"But, Villain, did you have to steal that guy's own wallet and hospitalize him?" The hero asked. "We know that he was doing something illegal also, but he being taken care of. So, please, shut up."
"But, but," Villain whined.
"Zip."
Villain threw himself back against the leather seats, scowling himself. This was unfair. Why couldn't he be a normal citizen without being arrested?
He placed a hand over his nose and summoned his healing powers. In a flash of painful light, the nose clicked into place.
"I thought we inhibited his powers," The driving hero mumbled to the other.
"Shoot. Pull over," the other, also known as the sassy one who broke Villain's nose (we'll call him Nosey), hopped out of the car and joined Villain in the backseat with a clipboard.
"So, Villain," Nosey said. "We are going to have to administer a power suppressor. Do you have any allergies to any drugs or medications?"
Villain glanced at Nosey with a "you serious?" expression. He then shook his head.
"Verbal confirmation."
"No you idiot," Villain snarled. "Are you blind in there." He waved a hand in front of Nosey's face.
"Cut the attitude man," Nosey warned and started to recite all of the questions in a bored tone like they have done this one too many times. Villain answered with the same montone tongue, sneering at Nosey like he was trash- which, in Villain's mind, he was.
"Okay," Nosey finished and plucked a hypodermic needle from their pocket. Villain watched suspiciously as they filled it up with a clear liquid from a small bottle. It was something actually from a pharmacy, he could tell. He reached forward and plucked the bottle out of the other's hands with a sharp, "Gimme."
Villain quickly skimmed over the words, stopping at each -zephines or -pams with a confused look on his face.
"What's in this?" Villain asked. Before Nosey replied, they jabbed the needle into Villain's neck and administered the contents.
"Hey!" Villain exclaimed, pulling the needle out. Almost immediately, he was hit by a cold sensation.
"Hey," he mumbled drowsily, his eyelids drooping. "Did-did you drug me?"
Nosey grabbed Villain's chin and forced the Villain to look at them.
"Of course, you were quite intolerable," then they reached behind them and pulled out another needle. The power suppressor.
Nosey easily emptied the drug into the vein on Villain's wrist with a satisfied smile at Villain's shock. They then unbuckled Villain and helped him lay down on the seats.
"Sweet dreams," Nosey said right before the darkness engulfed Villain.
Villain woke in a damp room, shivering out of his skin. He groggily looked around, found nothing of interest, and closed his eyes again. He vaguely recognized that the drug was still running through his system- whether it be the sedative or the suppressor, he didn't know which. He also knew that he should take advantage of the chance to rest while he had it.
That "chance to rest" actually became only five minutes. The damp coolness of the cell was replaced by a gust a warm air. Villain didn't care, or didn't realize, that Hero was standing in front of him.
He did open his eyes, however, when he heard Nosey's pipsqueak voice, "I thought he was awake."
"He is probably still drugged up," Hero said in her calm, orderly tone. "Oh there he is," she ran her fingers over Villain's cheek, checking for any type of reaction. Finding none, she stepped back and whispered something to Sidekick that Villain couldn't make out.
His head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, but being the positive guy he was, he decided on cotton candy. Make the situation a little better.
He closed his eyes again, even though Nosey and Hero were standing right there and talking about him. He picked up bits and pieces:
"Move him to a warmer cell, one with a bed," came Hero's assertive voice.
"He doesn't deserve it!" came Nosey's ear-shattering chirps of a voice.
"He is laying on the ground in a cell, hardly able to keep his head from rolling around. Make him comfortable. He needs the rest for what's about to come."
Even though Hero's voice was indeed calming, it still made Villain's heart pump faster. They were going to so something to him. He frowned weakly- hardly a frown in the hero's eyes. He didn't know why, but it sounded like they were going to do more than just hurt him.
Kill him, or maybe do tests on his healing powers.
Villain whimpered loudly which brought the heros attention. His eyes were squeezed shut, unable to look at them. A wave a fear came over him when someone's (hopefully not Nosey's) arms wrapped around him and lifted him from his spot. He squirmed, trying to break free.
"Shut up," came a sing-song voice. It made Villain freak out, kicking and panting. It was Nosey. Nosey was touching him.
"Sheesh," Nosey exclaimed at the outburst and readjusted Villain so that they (Nosey) was much more comfortable, but the newly formed position stressed Villain's limbs.
"W- w," Villain croaked. "... taking?"
"Aw look at you, so out of it and quiet. Hardly able to form a complete word," Nosey gave a fake pouty face that Villain didn't even register.
Sleep once again tugged at him, but he tried to keep his eyes pried open. He would never forgive himself if he fell asleep in Nosey's arms.
Suddenly, after what seemed like an eternity of floating through the air, Villain was sat down on a bed. Without any resistance, he allowed his limbs to be moved around and a thick, warm blanket to be draped over his body.
He closed his eyes, relishing the warmth and inviting comfort. He let out a few grumpy mutterings as the drug took hold once again and he fell into a deep slumber that only time could wake him from.
Nosey left immediately after tucking Villain in, if they even called it that. More like heeding to their boss's orders, but they hated it. Hated the way that Villain was being treated like a hero himself.
Hero entered the warm cell that Villain was placed in. The room was much nicer than the damp one, with a bed, light, and heating unit, but still a cell nevertheless.
She walked over to Villain's sleeping figure and traced his cheek with her long, unkept, fingernails. He didn't stir, which was good. Very carefully, she lifted the covers off and placed her hand on his chest.
And then she worked her powers, digging into Villain's conscience. It was foggy, which was understandable, and very difficult to navigate through, but she still found her destination.
The truth about what happened.
She watched the scene in her head. An imposter homeless man stalking up to Villain, asking for cash. Villain refused, beginning to walk away, but the homeless guy took out a gun and smacked the back of Villain's head. Villain then wheeled around and shoved the man against a nearby wall, giving him a round of punches. As Villain performed his beating, the homeless guy reached around and took Villain's wallet out. Villain quickly finished his work with a devastating punch that left the man in a heap. He then swooped down and grabbed his stolen wallet with a shrug.
Hero gasped and stepped backwards, quickly making sure that Villain didn't wake up. He didn't, so Hero put the blanket back over him and left the room.
As she strolled down the hallway, she thought of the feeling that she was getting from Villain's memories. Innocence. Villain was innocent. Not that he didn't do the extravagant illegal works that he regularly took part in, but that he had no idea that what he was doing was wrong.
He was misguided.
It took Villain some time to completely recover from the suppressor, but when he did, boy he felt like he could fly to the moon and back.
The downside of having healing powers was that you needed them for everyday function. They run your body systems like your nervous system does. It powers them like food and water does, so when those were taken away, Villain's body went on momentarily shut down. Hopefully Hero realized this before she decided to drug him again.
One day, Hero entered his cell as he was picking through breakfast. He had no recollection of Hero's impediment of his memories only days before.
"Villain," Hero cleared her throat and eyed Villain's plate in curiosity. "It's not poisoned," she laughed, wondering why he wasn't eating much.
"Not hungry," Villain replied, glancing at Hero for a brief second.
"You need the energy. We are going to start, uh, well, work today."
"Work?" Villain asked, absent-mindly.
"Yes. You are a prisoner," the words hurt Hero almost as much as she was the one receiving them. He really wasn't a prisoner. He was going to get reformed, learn morals, and hopefully become a hero, which was a long shot, but one should always hope for the best.
Hero sat on his bed as he finished lapping up the breakfast, which took a good thirty minutes. Hero was patient, however. Villain would need time to be assimilated into a hero's society. Spending some time in silence, watching him eat was insignificant compared to what he was about to do.
Two days later, Villain was throwing up in a toilet. Throwing up, not due to sickness or eating something funny, but from stress and exertion. The exercises that the heros made him, along with all the other "reforming" villains, were insane and taxing. Not to mention the mental strain with all of the "moral speeches" and assessments. Mulitple choice questions like: Which is the right thing to do when you see someone being beat up? A.) Call the cops or heros; B.) Stop the fight; C.) Talk them out of it calmly; or D.) All of the above. Villain put down B.
He failed the test.
Villain rested his forehead against the cool toilet seat. He had to get out of here. Runaway and leave. If only two days led up to the this, Villain glanced down at the bloody vomit in the toilet, then what would two weeks result in? Power suppressing? Villain shuddered. He couldn't go through that again.
So, Villain made the decision right then and there, infront of the toilet, that he would escape tonight and leave the city.
Forever.

Shadows House
I have a lot of thoughts surrounding this particular show, both good & bad.
Allow me to give a quick summary for anyone who hasn't seen/read it!
Shadows House is about 'a faceless family of nobles who all live within this giant manor, the Shadows House.
When a Shadow comes of age they receive a 'Living Doll' to both serve as their face and to clean the soot they emit from their bodies.
The most important rule of the living dolls is "don't fret over trivial matters"
A task which is difficult for the ever curious doll Emiliko.
Watch this tale unfold as Emiliko & her mistress Kate navigate this ever mysterious Manor together.'
For a fan of slow burn thrillers, horror, slice of life, supernatural & mystery series' this has been an absolute blast!
It's not quite the combination of genres you'd expect from a show, but it works really well here!
In fact I was so into the anime that this is actually the first show where I broke down and read the manga!
Unfortunately there's no official English release, but at least there are some people translating the series!
As much as I'd like to go on about the manga, this post is meant to be more so about the anime so I'll (try to) leave it at that.
Though i feel obligated to warn anime onlys I'll likely refer the manga a lot in a spoiler section latter in this post I'll try to be vague but I can't guarantee anything. For anyone worried about that I'll lable it do you can read on until then.
Everything from the animation to the music was amazing & completely fit the mood of the story! I remember a couple scenes where I actually teared up because of this!
The Ending theme is an absolute banger! I've listened to that on repeat ever since I first heard it! And the Opening is also great! It's cool for it to be an instrumental, stuff like that is pretty rare! I also heard the song in the op as a motif in the music throughout the show! It really sets the right mood in each scene it's in! It's amazing for getting into each episode!
In terms of adaptation almost everything from the beginning to the end of the Debut arc was done amazingly well!
Even with the stuff they cut it still holds true to the spirit of its source.
The main important part that was cut is something that could easily be introduced latter if they decide to go for a second season, so I'm not too mad about that.
However! Everything after the debut is a bit of a different story.
There was a lot I liked about the last couple episodes but there were some parts that were immersion breaking for me.
I've been being vague up until this point l, but I'm planning on going into spoiler territory for both the anime and manga after this. So I'll make a quick spoiler free summary of my thoughts before moving onto that.
I really really loved this show but in my opinion the last 3 episodes were the weakest of them all. They went anime only for the ending. I don't mind that on it's own, but it was rushed and the writing was sloppy at times.
Now I'm not telling you to not watch the show! Most of It's really really good, and I can still see people enjoying the parts I'm talking about if they want to give the anime a try. Overall I've fallen in love with this series and I could never recommend it enough.
If what I'm saying is giving you bad vibes the manga is available and doesn't have the issues I've mentioned. You can look for a translation online, it didn't take me long to find one so don't worry too much about that.
Also! if you're an anime only who's finished the series and want to know where to pick up the Manga I'd recommend at least skiming through the beginning. I know it might not be what you're looking for but there were a bunch of small scenes that either got cut or were merged for adaptation purposes that I think are super cute & give more context to different aspects of the setting. However! Pay close attention during the "night watchers part" something important got cut .
~~~Now for spoilers!!!!~~~
I don't want to make it sound like I'm some manga purist who hates the very thought of the slightest change from the source. I'm anime only for a lot of different shows and I've always despised it when that type of manga reader reared it's ugly head.
While I'll admit some changes did bother me I won't make a fuss about the smaller stuff.
With that said!
I hinted earlier in this post that I didn't have a big problem with Robe-same being cut. That was because without them there it does make for a more complete story if they only get one season to work with.
If there is another season they can easily be introduced latter on. Like maybe Emiliko & Shaun can meet them when the Debutant class reunion is going on before they talk on the roof (or right after that) I actually think that would be the perfect time to introduce them (other than the time they were supposed to appear, but I digress)
Louise teaming up & being friendly with Kate can be explained with some dialogue changes at the first Debutant Class Reunion. Louise can say she was just trying to show off or that she just wanted to get back at Edward and that she isn't interested in helping Kate with her problems. Things can then go on as they did in the manga.
Kates being reckless & telling everything to John can be explained by her being extremely panicked when Emiliko went missing, as long as there are some lines of dialogue adressing this it's fine. Though I do wish she tried to keep some stuff a secret but couldn't because Shaun tries to interfer because he's still brainwashed, or something along those lines. It felt a bit weird after she just told Emiliko to keep that stuff between them. Still that could be explained by how panicked she was.
There are other things, but I don't want to drag the post on too long. Most of the issues can be fixed with little changes here & there.
I never had a problem with the idea of them going in an anime only direction. I just want to have a good time with the show.
Unfortunately I can't 100% vouche for the direction the show went in. There were elements that I can't excuse, even viewing it as it's own entity instead of an adaptation.
My main complaint with it is how they handled the brainwashing of Ricky & Lou. They didn't say a word when the Debutants were talking badly about Edward & even went along with a plan to go against him. It makes absolutely no sense!
Shaun freaked out when John only suggested that he didn't have to be loyal to the house. These guys were flat out rebelling against an adult! It felt like Ricky & Lou didn't have a purpose & were just there to be there.
The whole point of the coffee is to influence shadows against doing stuff like this. It makes the coffee seem pointless and the adults seem dumb for relying on it to control the kids.
I haven't even brought up the fact that both of their brainwashings were broken by something as simple as a few kind words. It straight up contradicts the rules established by both the Anime and Manga.
This becomes very apparent when you consider all the trouble John & Kate went through to free Shaun & Emiliko.
This was my biggest complaint, but I have some other issues as well.
The next big one is how they handled Edward.
1. Why on earth would he even consider kidnapping Emiliko when he had complete control of the childrens wing? Before this point he was depicted as being a lot more crafty than this. He could easily have Kate monitored or something.
2. Why didn't he use his powers to stop them like what he did to Maryrose & Rosemary when they fought back being taken to the adults wing? He's already shown off his power at this point, why not?
3. Why did he reveal his soot powers at all!? Especially while using his face in front of the kids! The whole unification thing is one of the biggest secrets of the house for good reason! There's no way he wouldn't get in huge trouble for exposing it to children!
Here are some other related questions.
Why didn't Kate, Emiliko, & John react to Edward using soot powers? They shouldn't know about unification yet so why didn't they act shocked, or say anything about it?
Is Edward being banished even an option in the Shadows House? Wouldn't the third floor lords just dispose of him rather than risk letting him leave?
How did John even get a veiled dolls outfit? Louise had to use her powers to get Kate one & she left a long time ago.
I can't think of much else at the moment, but I think you get my point.
Please don't take this as me saying that I hate the show because of these episodes. Even if I consider them the weakest of the series I still found a lot of parts to be very enjoyable!
Like I thought it was adorable When Edward was attempting to interrogate Emiliko & she kept being her sunshine self pretending to eat & falling asleep.
Barbara getting to tell off Edward for breaking the rules was great!
I loved seeing Shaun hatch the plan to get Kate into the adults wing to save Emiliko.
Seeing John (attempt to) sneak around the adults wing had me rolling!
The ending scene of Shaun, Ricky, & Lou singing gave me the chills.
(Though I wonder how they'd handle Shaun & Emiliko being brainwashed again since they already used the scenes where they're freed)
Kate & Emilico being propelled by John back to the children's wing was absolutely amazing! I found Shaun & Ricky running over to catch them to be super sweet! (Not to mention the way that scene was animated was absolutely gorgeous!)
Getting hints to what was supposed to come after the debut was nice, at least the groundwork is there in case this gets a season 2!
To (try to) wrap this all up while there were a lot of things I loved and disliked about this show I still had a really fun time watching it!
I kinda hope there's a season two just to see if they can tidy up the mess that the last few episodes created.
Regardless of whether that happens or not I came out of this with a series I absolutely adore.
Heck I could make a whole other post about the manga. (Hopefully one that's less ranty)
Anyway! I won't take any more of your time.
I hope you all have a wonderful day/night! And I hope to see you in my next post!
(Sorry if this one was a bit of a mess!)
S.T. REWRITE - S2:E2; Chapter Two, Trick or Treat, Freak - [Pt. 2]
A Will Byers x Reader Series
After Will sees something terrible on trick-or-treat night, Mike wonders whether Eleven’s still out there. Tensions grow between Y/n and Mike as does their concern for Will.
A//N: This chapter is slightly different cause I realized I'm a complete Doof™, and I had Max and reader meet twice. It had been so long since I wrote MADMAX, that I forgot they met in the arcade lol. So if you've read this before, the scene in the hallway is different.
||Reader's POV||
"Well, good new is, this is only slightly humiliating," I mumble.
I was doing the best I could to shrink back and be as hard to notice as possible, even though I know it's a lost cause.
Unfortunately, the boys all had the same thought and I had been slowly pushed front in center.
"Oh, my God," Someone laughed.
I did my best to let the side comments and laughter slide off my back.
"Maybe its's not so bad," I tried.
"That's easy for you to say [Y/N], you're not in a proton pack and jumpsuit." Lucas said.
I winced. He did have a point, their costumes are a bit more obvious than mine.
"When do people make these decisions?" Dustin said.
I heard Will speak up behind me. "Everyone dressed up last year."
"Yeah! I mean, who are they to judge, he went as Frankenstein's monster last year, and no one laughed despite that being super played out." My anger was getting the best of me, and I made direct eye contact and let my voice rise as I uttered those last words.
The boy I had targeted, covered his laughs with a cough and grew silent fairly quickly. At least I shut someone up.
"It's a conspiracy, I'm telling you."
"Just be cool" Mike encouraged.
I took a deep breath in, and that's when we all heard some prick speak out. "Who you gonna call? The nerds!"
I had a million things I wanted to say to that kid but nevertheless I took another deep breath in. That's wen I felt a hand grab my own, and I knew it was Will. I gave his hand a light squeeze as a silent thank you and kept walking.
+++
...three to the right, four to the left.
I mindlessly repeat the combination in my head as I've done a thousand times before at this school and my locker opens once again. I let it swing open and I sigh. I pull the fake glasses off my head and fold them, putting them on the small shelf in the locker space. I reach forward and grab my textbook and notebook after scanning for them. It's then that I barely make out my brother's voice.
"...so you probably don't have any friends to take you trick-or-treating,"
I frown and look over to find them just down the hall. Talking to Max. Or, attempting to at least. I continue to exchange my things and get ready for the next class. Although, I can't help but wince when I hear him continue.
"and you're scared of bullies, so we were thinking that it would be okay if you come with us."
My eyes widened slightly, and I took that as my cue.
"'It'd be okay'?"
My eyes widened slightly and I took that as my cue to jump in. I closed my locker and quickly reset the dial.
"Yeah. Our party's a democracy, and the majority voted that you could come."
I quickly made my way over, my things held tightly against my chest. I smiled and spoke up.
"Hey guys," I chirped. I made eye contact with Max and I chose my words carefully. "How are you guys?"
I ignored the frantic and slightly confused looks Dustin and Lucas were desperately trying to send my way.
Max smiled knowingly at me.
"I'm good." And I knew, just like me, she had a double meaning to that.
She turned back to the guys and plastered on a fake smile.
"I didn't realize it was such an honor to go trick-or-treating with you." I couldn't help but smirk at that.
"Yeah, I mean, we know where to get the full-sized candy bars. We figured you'd want in."
Her eyes squinted ever so slightly. "That's presumptuous of you."
I stood there awkwardly before I recalled that Max and I had our next class together.
Desperately wanting to change the subject, I smiled and turned to her. She was already closing her locker.
"Wanna head to class?"
"Sure thing." She smiled, and the two of us walked away, leaving the boys a gaping mess.
I felt kinda bad for the guys, but at the same time, I hadn't realized how nice, and refreshing it was to have another female friend for once.
||3rd person POV||
Max felt a looming sense of dread knowing it was time to go home. Which meant another painful care ride with him. She hated even being around him, he made her life a living hell. As she skated across the parking lot, she knew he was gonna threaten her in some way for being late. She didn't feel bad though, of course.
"You're late again."
"Yeah, I had to get catch-up homework." She mumbled, opening the passenger door and climbing in.
"Jesus. I don't care. You're late again, and you're skating home. Do you hear me?"
+++
Max sits quietly, wishing with all of her might that the car ride could just be over.
Billy, her older step-brother blasts the song Wango Tango as he drives, wrecklously down the road. He scoffs.
"God, this place is such a shithole."
Max thinks of the [Y/N], the only girl who had actually been nice to her, despite her own short temper. Her only real friend since moving here.
"It's not that bad,"
He looks at her, and she knows - she knew as soon as she said something, anything, Billy would find away to use that against her. And sure enough.
"No?" He said, angrily.
She watched as he reached for the window mechanism and rolled down her window. He watched smugly as she winced at the smell and harsh wave of cold crisp air. He took a deep breath, and pulled his nose.
"You smell that, Max? That's actually shit. Cow shit."
"I don't see any cows." She said, matter-of-factly, reaching over and rolling up the windows.
"Clearly, you haven't met the high-school girls."
Max's head threw itself back at the headrest at the comment. She felt her anger boiling up, but she tried to keep it down.
"So what, you like it here now?" He snapped.
"No," she said defensively.
"Then why are you defending it?"
"I'm not."
Max knew he was getting angry again. He knew his pattern by now and she knew he was already up to no good. He loved to corner her.
"Sure sounds like it," He said calmly.
Max hated it when he got calm like this. It always meant he was going to snap. Go too far. Her heart began to pound. She shook her head, tying to regain her composure.
"It's just we're stuck here, so..."
"Hmm. You're right. We're stuck here," She felt his head turn and his eyes zero in on her. "and whose fault is that?"
"yours."
His attention when back to the road. She couldn't help it, her anger was getting the best of her, and the answer came out in a weak whisper she prayed he didn't hear. But he did, and she knew
he was going to do anything to make her pay.
He looked at her, then back at the road but then back at her. "What'd you say?"
Max felt like she was shrinking. "Nothing," She mumbled, quickly.
Billy got calm again. Her heart began to beat faster once more. "Did you say it's my fault?"
"No," she said quickly.
"You know whose fault it is."
She stayed quiet. Max knew anything she said would it would piss him off. Her words failed her.
"Say it,"
Her eyes began to burn, but she refused to cry. He always made her feel weak and powerless and she knew she might not be able to do anything now, but she sure as hell wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of seeing her cry.
"Max..." He said lowly, drawing out her name. "Say it." He growled.
He whirled towards her in his seat, his face inches away from hers. His face was completely red as he screamed his throat raw. "Say it!"
She closed her eyes tried to ignore him. Even though she could feel his spit on her face, and his screams were loud enough to vibrate the car. She couldn't let him see how he got to her.
He returned to road, and reached for the volume dial, cranking it all the way up. His foot stomped on the gas and the car was suddenly going unnaturally fast. Billy threw his hands on wheel to every beat of the song.
She let him take it out on the car, grateful it wasn't her. But she knew there was nothing she could do to stop him anyway, right?
She was prepared to make it through the rest of the car ride, but her pounding heart stopped, her breath hitched and her eyes went wide when she saw four figures on their bikes in the middle of the road, not far up ahead.
"Billy, slow down." She said, quickly.
"Oh, these your new hick friends?" he asked, a scary gleam in his eye.
She quickly shook her head. "No! I don't know them."
"I guess you won't care if I hit 'em, then?"
Max knew Billy was crazy. He was out of his damn mind, but what terrified her most, was that she truly and honestly did not know if he was crazy enough to hit some kids with his car. She felt sick to her stomach, everything was going too fast and her heart began pounding faster and faster.
"I get bonus points, I get 'em all in one go?" he asked excitedly.
The car was getting close and just like that, her fear was quickly replaced by anger and her adrenaline was pumping. She whirled herself around all the way to face her nasty scum of a step-brother and her voice was rising. "No, Billy, stop. It's not funny."
His body kept dancing, his head bobbing and hands drumming themselves against the steering wheel, but his head turned to her and his eyes were stone cold. He had no emotion in his face and it was enough to send a chill down her spine, but she knew now wasn't the time. He stomped on the gas pedal and the car roared.
Max wondered to herself why and how in the hell do these idiots not here this car and why the hell aren't they moving?!
She kept an eye on the road, the kids, the girl - [Y/N] - noticed the car coming first.
'Why the hell, aren't they moving?' she thought.
Max found her voice one more and screamed at the top her lungs. "Billy, come on, stop it. It's not funny. Stop!" The car got faster.
What she feared most was coming true. He snapped, and he might as well have been in trance cause he was laser focused, she was positive he hadn't even blinked, and she knew it didn't matter whether or not he had any intention of stopping. She couldn't afford to sit around and wait, they were only a few feet in front of them.
"Billy, stop it!"
With a racing heart, Max lunged forward, gripping the steering wheel and the car swerved to the left, just in the nick of time.
Billy came to life and started shouting again. "Yeah! That was a close one, huh?"
He let out a wild and crazed laugh, and Max whipped around in her seat, peering out the back to see her classmates emerging form the leaves on the side of the road. She was unable to get a good look, the car was over the hill within seconds and they were out of sight. But she breathed a sigh of relief knowing they were alive.
