Behind the Scenes of The End of Time (Part 33)

Excerpt from a Dec 2009 Reader’s Digest interview with David Tennant, by Benji Wilson:

“This year we’ve done something different, partly because we’re telling the stories of the end of the Doctor’s time. It is still set at Christmas, but it’s perhaps not got quite as much, er... Christmas cheer as before.”

He sits back, takes a sip of pineapple juice, runs a hand through his hair.  He has a twinkle in his eye, but he’s treading carefully - giving away the plot for his last hurrah would endear him neither to fans nor employers.  Tennant filmed his final episode back in May. “It was a bit sad. The last things I filmed were weird green-screeny things with me hanging on a bit of wire. We’d done all the big emotional stuff before that. I think if we’d done my last scene on my last day I’d have been in a bit of a state, but the moment they called wrap was still quite emotional.”

You’d expect this Doctor to get something extra-special for his efforts, and he did.  David Tennant - and die-hard fans might want to take a seat before reading on - is now the proud possessor of his own sonic screwdriver, the Doctor’s signature gizmo.

“I have one of the real things! There were two; I think I got one that was being sent out to pasture because they only last so long. Phil, the grandmaster of props, presented it in this beautiful box that had the sonic screwdriver and the stethoscope and torch that I used inside.  It was really quite nice.”

This, of course, raises the prospect that Britain’s most recognizable time traveler can now walk the streets with his sonic screwdriver on hand, ready to dazzle awestruck children. I suggest as much. He’s already done it.

“I’ve only used it once to impress a child. If I tell you the story it would sound terribly self-serving. It was a charity thing, but it was quite cool. He was only about five, so it was a nice, wide-eyed moment. I could have the screwdriver on me at any time - I shan’t reveal when. I might do something to your Dictaphone right now.”
