What is up with creators these days and purposefully spiteing their own audience? Like oh wow good job you made your fans upset and they decided to stop watching/playing/reading your stuff. And with some they go *surprise Pikachu face* when they lose money/viewership/players/etc (not sonic in that case but in others). This is an odd pattern I'm noticing in the last almost decade.
something something subverting expectations and uhhhhhhhhh twitter mentality? I'll always say that having creators so entangled with their fandom is a terrible thing that blurs boundaries too much.
Oh, but wait, because I remember something very juicy from Ian Flynn :) this was said in response to fans questioning the way he wrote Sonic in #50, with his ideology that everyone, even unrepentant villains, deserve freedom.
This is basically the SEGA standard. Just… more overtly stated, I guess. Um. This is how Sonic is, by SEGA, and this is basically me spelling it out for anyone who hasn't quite figured it out at this point.
His point of view is very simple and idealized, but it's also a children's fantasy. You know we're not going to be able to answer these high level moral questions that humanity has been grappling with since we had an understanding of morality to begin with. In a Sonic book this is introductory level. And if you're in your 20s and 30s and 40s and you don't find this surface level approach fully satisfying, go read adult material. Go read stuff that does delve into that and does try to tackle it, does something smarter. This is not something smarter."
Mfw you're so bad at accepting criticism that you're basically saying "listen I am writing a stupid story for stupid kids here, if you want something smarter go read another book". Like. Bro. Bro that's not how you keep your audience. Also fuck you for that "for anyone who hasn't quite figured it out at this point", you arrogant, condescending hack. People pay you to answer questions, at least be courteous!
Anyway, yeah. Writers got a little too confident recently. It's like they think (... or they know) that if their product is loved enough, it can withstand their rudeness.
