a reading lamp so she can read her books in bed. i'm so proud.

🔥?
Okay, so I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but to me, many of the characters within the narrative of THG are disabled/ have experienced disability in some way! Sorry for how long this post this about to be!
I'll explain further just so others can understand my thought process:
Katniss- Goes deaf in the first book, and whilst that is cured in the 2nd, throughout the rest of the trilogy has PTSD/ trauma, which is a disability/ becomes disabling.
EDIT: Katniss is indigenous (Gale and Haymitch are also part of the seam!) How disability and race intersect is important, too!
Peeta- Loses his leg and has to use a prosthetic, a visible disability, on top of the hijacking and how that affects his mental health.
Johanna- Also has PTSD and severe Hydrophobia due to being electrocuted by the Capitol- to the point where she can't go out into the rain and is used against her when applying to D 13's army. (Not sure if that's 100% correct, but Johanna stans, feel free to correct me!)
Beetee- Again, most likely has PTSD, but also in book 3, due to the lightning ( I think), he is in a wheelchair.
Enobaria- Again, PTSD; I also want to include how her teeth were fashioned into fangs ( Idr if it happened in the book!) But I'm unsure how that would affect her emotionally, physically, medically, etc., so I can't get deeper into that. I've put it down anyway.
Mags- Had a stroke, and her speech isn't as clear as it used to be. Also, she uses a cane, which was taken away from her during the 75th games, presumably because it can be used as a weapon, and she had to rely on Finnick to be mobile during that time in the arena, on top of PTSD or some form of trauma.
Haymitch- Has PTSD (i.e. the bad nightmares), and whilst nothing is said in the book, the alcoholism he has to use to cope with everything has probably messed his liver up. On top of that, the withdrawal symptoms whilst sobering up in D13 were probably disabling, too.
Annie- Has PTSD or Psychosis. She has hallucinations, putting her hands to her ears when triggered by things that remind her of the 70th games or being tortured.
Finnick- PTSD and had multiple breakdowns in D13. On top of the trauma that comes with sexual exploitation, which many other Victors would also have (maybe not the same presentation of symptoms/ coping mechanisms!) if/when Snow forced them into prostitution.
Also, obviously, Chaff, Seeder, Wiress, Cashmere, Cecilia, and basically every Victor is dealing with the trauma and various mental and physical problems after the games, which again are disabilities or disabling!
Non- Victors
Mrs Everdeen- Has depression that renders her mute and unresponsive after Mr Everdeen's death.
Gale- Not stated explicitly, but having to work in the same mines that killed your father, having to then be the one to have to hunt so they survive on top of being in poverty, and then having to save as many people from your district when Snow tries to bomb it would lead to some sort of impact on your mental, physical and emotional health. Also, the whipping he received in Catching Fire would leave a massive injury and be a nightmare for anyone.
Madge's mom- Has constant migraines, which I assume increased after Maysilee's death.
Pollux—He has his tongue cut out and communicates through gestures; this also applies to the rest of the Avox's.
District 10 Boy- in the 74th games, this tribute is described as having a crippled foot.
Those are all the characters from the book who are disabled or become disabled by the system. And I think the fandom forgets that a lot—which isn't helped by the movies erasing things like Johanna's Hydrophobia or Peeta's prosthetic leg. This is annoying to me as many characters, such as Annie, will get ableism thrown their way, yet that person's favourite character will actually be considered disabled- also because I am a disabled woman and having to put up with ableism is a nightmare anyway.
I know we talk about trauma such as PTSD and Psychosis a lot in this fandom, as we should! It's imperative to the message of THG's and the characters of these books! But I've never seen someone explicitly say these characters are disabled; they count as disability representation. And I think if we did that, then
a) We could talk about things like psychosis, PTSD and other traumas these characters experience with greater insight and find empathy and strength within characters we couldn't before and maybe the ableism thrown at the characters would lessen a bit as well.
b) Calling it disability/ disabling on top of the diagnosis would enable us to examine other bits of Panem and see another way it affects people. It would also provide a greater depth of analysis in terms of how we talk about poverty, the games, and other things within the narrative.
Such as how if you were a wheelchair user in the districts, especially D8-12, you wouldn't have access to a mobility aid, so you are either forced to find or create an unsuitable mobility aid such as a cane or are effectively left without aid. On top of this, if they did have a wheelchair (I highly doubt it!) It would be taken away because it could be used as a weapon ( like Glimmer's ring or Mags's cane- also, wheelchairs make good battering rams), so you would be left immobile. We could also discuss how D1-D4 are wealthier and how that affects things like disability and healthcare compared to D7, 8, 9, 10,11,12. Also how D1, D2, D3 and 5 or 6 have the materials or would be the Districts most able to make mobility aids if the Capitol even let them.
This is also a double-edged sword because I know if this conversation around disability within THG starts, there will be many that are going to have some terrible takes. It's going to make my blood pressure rise, and it'll be a nightmare to combat and, as a disabled woman, worse to read. And if this discussion does take off, then I'm gonna need this fandom to understand the three models of disability at a bare minimum! Not that you can't comment without that knowledge at all it just will save a lot of bad takes!
DISCLAIMER- I am just one disabled woman. There are plenty of disabled ppl within this fandom with a different opinion from mine, and I AM NOT AN EXPERT on disability!
TLDR: Many of the characters are disabled and yet face ableism within fandom when they shouldn't. We should start explicitly analysing the series through a disability lens on top of the ones we already explore, but I am terrified by the terrible takes and analysis that would occur.
Thank you for sending in an ask; I'm always happy to answer more! Also, I'm so sorry it's so long. It's probably not what you were expecting for an unpopular take ask. I had a huge thought process for this one, and I really wanted to go in-depth and try to make sure others understood!
Also, I love your odesta fanfiic's and can't wait to read more 🙂!

You Can't, You Can't Catch me Now I'm coming like storm into your town
Part 1/Part 2/Part 3/rest on Masterlist
[Mentor!Coriolanus Snow x time-travel, thg-era, tribute!reader x toxic!Finnick Odair (in the Peacekeeper era)]
Warning: gore, blood, gun and knife violence, serious injury, death, physical assult, possibly non-con...as I said, maybe...
Summary: You are a rebel, the last chance of the rebellion against President Snow. You're told to go on one last mission to kill the man who massacred Panem. It took you years to understand your mission when you became [name] Lily Baird, starting from the age of five till before the reaping day of the 10th Hunger Games.
The day you began your plan to destroy President Snow before he became the villain he was meant to become.
'Both sisters, Lucy Gray and [Name] Lily Baird are a part of the Covey, and though they have been chosen as tribute for both District 12 and 9 because of our own mistakes, we hope they will stay safe.'
You knew about [Name] Lily Baird, named after her because your mother was inspired by her fiery personality and strength, but now you realize that you were transported to a time before the Baird sisters died, one of sickness and one because of Coriolanus Snow himself.
'I will kill you, President Coriolanus Snow.'
[bolded and italics is parts straight from the book]
Tumblr media
As the world died, you stood still, seeing nothing but the burnt hospital where Katniss announced the rebellion.
A scream caught your eye and that’s when you noticed that Lucy was beside you, perfectly lost in the chaos, but the scream came from the boy you think could be changed into a person who loved Panem and wanted to do what was good for all citizens.
Struck with silence, you felt a slow rush of smoke flutter through you but it felt like your lover.
Your Finnick.
‘[Name] Lily…Please…’
Coriolanus didn’t have the strength left to scream and cry like the other people surrounding them but his voice sounded broken, so different from his determined echo singing the National Anthem of Panem.
You helped him, but you felt tense because of the look on his face.
It reminded you of,
‘Finnick, my…F-’
‘Who’s Finnick?’
You ignored Coryo’s freezing tone to say your love’s name in a calm chant. You felt woozy like you were drunk on Posca.
‘Finnick Odair, from District 4…I loved him with my heart until I had to leave him to save the Districts from the President…’
Coryo hummed as you slowly passed out and lost his balance because of his injured arm.
'Don't worry, [Name]. Help is coming...' But the help was for him, and they bashed a gun into your stomach, forcing you to cough up blood. Unfortunately, He was dragged away by the medics, but he yelled your name as you were taken from him,
‘[Name]! Don’t hurt her! Please!’
they ignored him, and he had one thought in his mind before he fainted.
‘I’m glad you left him, he doesn’t deserve you, that poor District boy. [Name] Lily Baird, you are a diamond bought by the future President of Panem, Coriolanus Snow, from a poor beggar.'
Finnick Odair.
But never forget, your Coryo won't overlook that name until Odair dies.
Tumblr media
He woke up on a pure white mattress with soft sheets thrown onto his lean frame.
‘Hi, Coryo. It’s us.’
Tigris smiled at him, checking his body for injuries the doctors hadn’t seen. Coriolanus hissed as a wound on his back started to sting, but still, he formed a small grin and faced his cousin and Grandma’am.
‘Hey, you missed bomb time…’
Tigris chuckled before frowning at the bandages wrapped around him.
‘Turns out that’s worse,’ she mumbled, ‘Knowing that you were there and I wasn’t.’
Coriolanus’ gaze faltered before he could reassure her that he was glad she was far from the Arena.
‘I’m glad that I’m not alone, and I’m glad that you’re safe and sound.’ He whispered, finally glancing back toward the blond-haired woman.
Tigris’ eyes teared up before clearing her throat and motioning to his scars to ask about what happened.
‘[Name] saved me…But she was hurt in the process…’
Tigris laughed before she could stop herself.
‘Well aren’t I glad!’
Grandma’am didn’t quite believe him until he gave a quick timeline of events.
‘Well, that does show some character, she seems like she wants to be a sweet capital girl. I applaud her personality.’
It was high praise for a District girl coming from a capital lady.
Especially from the woman who believed that all District breeds should be maids.
His grandma’am eventually shuffled over to him again when he lied down and took in a large breath.
‘I wonder if Clemensia felt this way when she was bitten by Dr.Gaul’s snakes.’ Was what haunted his mind.
After a bit of questioning, Coriolanus finally dared to ask what had to [Name] Lily. Tigris shrugged and only said that she wasn’t on the list of dead tributes before they settled into a deep silence.
Tumblr media
Sejanus was silent, sitting on his couch while the news of dead tributes played over and over again. The male tribute from District 12, both tributes from 1, the girl tribute from 2, and the male tribute from 9 had died. Luckily, neither of the Baird sisters had died, well, lucky for him and Coryo, he supposed.
‘Sejanus, eat something, you could have been seriously hurt!’ His ma yelled.
Sejanus hummed, but his gaze never moved from the television, watching a brave brown-haired girl running through the camera’s vision.
Tumblr media
It was hours after Coriolanus had awoken, and Grandma’am was busy complaining about how proud the Districts should be while watching the bombing.
‘But they say hardly anyone there saw it, Grandma’am.’ Tigris snorted. ‘You know they despise watching it.’
‘It won’t take a while for them to find out.’ Grandma’am clarified. ‘It’s the type of story that catches fire.’
Tumblr media
The world had caught fire before your eyes and all it reminded you of, just like during the bombing, was the speech Katniss yelled out to President Snow during the 75th Hunger Games.
‘You can torture us and bomb us and burn our districts to the ground. But do you see that? Fire is catching... And if we burn... you burn with us!’
‘[Name], are you sure you’re okay?’
You smiled at your sister but you knew that wouldn’t quell her worries at all.
‘I promise, I’m fine, I’m just a bit shaken up.’
Lucy Gray nodded before staring into the cold alley where they kept all of the tributes that hadn’t died.
‘I’m happy that you’re okay.’
‘I’m glad you’re okay too, Lucy…’ You mumbled before embracing her in a warm hug.
Tumblr media
The doctor who had entered to check up on Coriolanus was coincidentally the doctor he’d seen after the snake attack, Dr.Wane.
He reassured the Snows that Coriolanus was fine and had a mild concussion but he would, unfortunately, have to stay at the Hospital for a few more days before he could go home.
‘Wait!’ Coriolanus yelled. Dr.Wane turned back and nodded.
‘Do you know how my tribute is doing? Her hands were burned and she was choking on blood and smoke before I fainted.’
‘I wouldn’t know, but right now that shouldn’t be your concern, young man. You should focus on resting for now.’
Coriolanus wasn’t quite happy with that information but he obliged, his eyes weighing down on him before he finally passed out.

tlou x tgh au where katniss is ellie and haymitch is joel because i am loosing it ^_^ more thoughts under the separator
SO. ok. I think the story of tlou would have to change drastically for it to make sense with thg character but here are a few ideas about where things would go.
Katniss looses Prim when she is a lot younger. Gale finds this mall just outside of the quarantine zone and they all go together. Which leads to Prim and Katniss getting bit.
Gale ends up killing Prim and promises to do the same for Katniss and to take care of her mother. Time goes on and Katniss doesn't turn but she can't get over the image of Gale killing her sister, she can't stop blaming him.
So the fireflies (which i think could be called mockingjays in this au) find the two of them and take them. Gale becomes a firefly rebel and Katniss follows the Ellie storyline of having to be taken across country.
Tess is probably Effie. LISTEN I KNOW. i know they are NOTHING alike. but Tess is the person that Joel has been working with the longest after his daughter died, and they have this weird romantic tension and guilt to them that just fits Haymitch and Effie. So what i think is that Effie is closer to the higher ups of the fedra and gets Haymitch jobs to complete for money/things. She doesn't usually go with him, but when she knows it's missions that Haymitch cannot go through alone she does her best to help. Which is how she ends up completing the role of Tess. By urging Haymitch to take Katniss.
I debated also having Peeta be dragged around with Haymitch, but i think he is much better suited to live in jackson and meet Katniss and Haymitch there. (Who is tommy? i have no idea honestly. Maybe another victor?) Peeta is a jackson boy to me.
aaaaand that's all the thoughts for right now!

THG Reread Thoughts...I don't know how many I am up too. Sorry XD.
Katniss and both her alliances reresent some kind of rebellion, tbh. Both of them are representing her chooseing love and compassion over obeying the Capitol.
Katniss is SMART. SO much smarter than I remember giving her credit for. She isn't uber, mastermind genius because she is still in actual fact 16. But she was able to form a plan to get a legit leg up on the Careers useing all of her and Rues skills and it works as best it can. And I don't even think ALL of that is how much she is forced to survive. I think Katniss is genuinely a sharp girl.
Mentioned it in the Rue focused post...just the way her death hit me true tears came to my eyes. The unfairness and pain Katniss expereinces took my breath away as an adult whose, this time reading it, has expereince so much more loss.
So the rule change...is interesting. I will always maintain Crane WAS a bit short sighted sanctioning it. Had he thought about the possibility of them actually both living and what that would mean I legit don't think he would have. Whitch speaks to the ambition that festers in the Capitol...they wanted a better show, a love story. To bad that became hope and a rallying cry.
Katniss calling out Peeta's name is such an iconic scene. It shows just how much she has him on her brain the first thing she does is call to him.
Forgot how real Collins got with their injuries. Peeta's leg is something you can't avoid for even a sentence. Katniss's hearing is a constant issue and showing even in a realisic way (as someone who considers herself hard of hearing, this is actually refreshing to see).
Lets talk everlark. I think I will start by saying how early Katniss expression confusion caused by the act they had to preform took me back. We see so much more of that, the constant unsure and confused mess around her emotions, but it does start almost as soon as the act does. Katniss begins to wonder what she is doing because there is something connecting Peeta and her, and what she is doing for the act very early on and importantly, it only gets worse. Lying does this kids, even with the best intentions. And it makes it hurt when you get glimpes of how much Katniss DOES love and care for him.
Katniss instantly suspecting there is some truth to Peetas story about his crush makes me give her sus eyes so hard XD. Like girl you seem very eagar for him to not be totally playing to the camara rn XD.
There moment hunting is SO sweet honestly. And one of the more real moments they got and I love it.
The feast and the medicine scenes shocked with how much they scared me rereading them this time around. For a moment I forgot Thresh spares Katniss, and was genuinely worried for her. Points to Collins for her writing being with rereading in mind! Her storytelling is exciting enough to be captivating upon rereads whitch is AWESOME and not always the case.
Peeta nurseing both him and Katniss back after she's been helping him. Get you a man who will do it like him.
Katniss and her reaction to their first 'real' kiss forgetting she landing a smooch onto his cheek. Yes it was a snarky thing then but still XD. Reguardless it is SO sweet.
'The first time I want another' about this kiss also has been the subject of a lot of back and forth. Reading it now, it is pretty clear to me that yea...Katniss is meant to be expereince SOME kind of desire here. If for nothing else, more closeness.

I wrote an outline for a chapter I haven't finished but I still can't get around to writing the said chapter. Any advice/tips for that?
Chapter Outlined But Still Can't Write It
I'm not sure if you mean you haven't finished the outline or the chapter, so we'll tackle it both ways. :)
Chapter Outline Isn't Finished - If you're struggling to finish the chapter outline, start by looking at the conflict of the scene/s that make up the chapter. What does the character want in the scene? Are they trying to solve a problem? Are they trying to obtain something? (Like information, improvement of a skill, an object, agreement from someone to do something?) What tactic do they use in an attempt to get the thing? What obstacles do they face, and how do their tactics escalate? Do they succeed or fail in getting the thing? Are there consequences of getting the thing or not getting the thing? Understanding the purpose of your scene/scenes/chapter helps greatly in figuring out what needs to happen from beginning to end. You can also look at scene structure, which I tackle in my post Easy Scene/Chapter Structure.
Chapter Outline Is Finished - If your chapter outline is finished but you're still struggling to write the chapter, it could be because although you know where it needs to begin and what needs to happen, you may not know specifically how to start it. In other words, it's one thing to know that the chapter needs to start with Katniss preparing to go hunting with Gale, but that doesn't tell us exactly how the scene needs to begin. Try analyzing what needs to happen at the beginning and visualizing where your character is at the first point you know.
In the THG example, we know Katniss will walk out the door to meet Gale to go hunting. So, we can imagine her poised at the door getting ready to walk outside... now we rewind it. What was she doing in the moments before she got to the door? What did she need do in order to get ready? What room was she in? Who or what did she interact with? What was she thinking about? These can give you clues to specifically where you can start. Remember, it helps to start with movement, or in other words, something happening. Like, "My feet touch the ice cold floor..." or "Wooden bowls clatter to the floor when I open our tiny cupboard." Or, in the case of THG: When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim's warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress.
You want the opening image of the chapter to be a hook, either a dynamic moment that asks a question ("Where's Prim?") or dynamic imagery: Nothing about the woman sitting across from me suggested she was a private investigator, much less one who came so highly recommended by Hollywood's rich and famous.
Other things that could be going on... I can think of some other potential issues which are worth considering if the above advice doesn't help you move forward:
1 - You're not sure where the story is going - You may have a full or partial outline for your chapter, but if you're not sure what happens in the next chapter or later on in the story, that can create a sort of mental block that makes it more difficult to get started. It's almost like your brain can see the road is washed out up ahead and doesn't want to start moving until the road is repaired. So, make sure you have a good idea of what needs to happen next and where the overall story is going. You can head over to my Plot & Story Structure master list of posts if you need help plotting.
2 - You've stressed yourself out about it - When we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to start something or finish something, we end up creating an association of stress with the thought of that activity. In other words, when we think of doing the thing it stresses us out, and since our brains are programed to avoid stress, it makes us not want to do the thing. We can think we want to do the thing... we can be motivated and have things ready to go, but if that little bit of stress bubbles up, our brains can say, "Nope! Uh-uh... that way lies danger," and we just can't get going. So, see what you can do to resolve any stress you may be feeling about the chapter. Do some fun activities related to the chapter, like try story boarding it with cute doodles or images from the internet. Make an aesthetic for the chapter, or make a chapter playlist. Try doing a little meditation, yoga, or take a walk before you sit down to work on the chapter. And don't give yourself a hard time when you try but it doesn't go anywhere.
3 - You're not ready to write the chapter - Sometimes there's something blocking you from writing the chapter and it's not something you can necessarily figure out. On a subconscious level, maybe your brain realizes you don't know the characters well enough to give this chapter justice. Maybe something about the chapter isn't working. Or maybe you're just more excited to write another chapter. Remember it's ok to skip chapters and come back to them later. Sometimes that's all you need in order to make it work.
I hope something here helps for you!

ok but now I need azurtiger content you gave me a new otp
OLDER COUSINS SOULMATES FOREVER
THEYRE MY LOVES FOREVER AND ALWAYS OK!!!!! so i have this little au i cooked up where something causes tigris to rebel earlier (maybe like 5-10 years post-tbosas) and coriolanus sends her to twelve to serve as a peacekeeper, since his resentment of the place is somewhat still fresh in his mind.
before you read: tw for suicidal thoughts and mentions of murder (just thg stuff in general)
here's a little scenario that ive been thinking of from said au (which i'll probably turn into a one-shot soon!)
- so tigris is depressed and resents the capitol for what they did to her, and also for what they've been doing to victors and tributes this whole time.
- she ends up wandering off to the meadow at one point, sick of the constant noise of the district and the duties of being a peacekeeper. at this point, she's contemplating suicide. she hates that she's actively aiding the capitol and wants her duties to end, though they can't because she needs to serve for at least twenty years.
- she sits down on the old rock lucy gray used to use when she was writing her songs, and spots an old goat in the distance. his lead is roped to a tree branch, so his owner is definitely around here somewhere.
- suddenly, barb azure comes up behind tigris, startling her.
- barb only spots tigris' clothing, peacekeeper fatigues.
- "you know damn well you ain't supposed to be around here, peacekeeper. get lost."
- tigris turns around, and barb looks at her blankly, not recognising her as one of the peacekeepers that comes around trying to cause trouble with the covey.
- tigris seems to almost be entranced, she isn't sure how to respond.
- barb doesn't budge on her point, though, having dealt with spiteful peacekeepers a hundred times over.
- "can you hear me? i said go!"
- "oh, i'm-, im sorry. i never knew this meadow was out of bounds. ill get out of your hair."
- barb azure pauses, recognising tigris and her accent from somewhere.
- "you're new 'round here, aren't you?"
- "yes, yes i am. i arrived here about a week ago.. from the capitol. look, im-.." she pauses, trying to read the expression on barb's face. "im really sorry for the inconvenience, ill be sure never to cross this field again if its that much of a bother, i had no idea-"
- barb interrupts her, remembering something. she always was good with faces.
- "i know you from somewhere.. from somebody." after a long stare between the two, something clicks for barb, so apparent so that tigris can see it on her face. "you're snow's cousin, ain't you? well, what's a fancy capitol girl like yourself doing all the way out here? thought it'd be fun, did you? to rub it in our faces that she's gone. well it was him that did it! he killed our lucy gray, not the mayor! and he's gonna pay for it, you mark my words! i may not be able to say nothing in the district, but here i can! he killed her!"
- all tigris can manage to get barb to hear over the shouting is "please, please listen to me. i know what he did! he sent me here! he sent me here with no money, no contact with the capitol and twenty years of peacekeeper duty. i know how you feel, i felt it too! that's why i told him he can't go on like this. that's why im here now. i want to help."
- tigris sits back down on the rock, the tears that have been brewing from years of watching her coryo become somebody else now silently streaming down her cheeks. she hates coriolanus. she hates him.
- barb walks over to her, she hates seeing people cry.
- "you really wanna help, huh?"
- tigris tries to stifle her tears to speak, but its no use.
- "i.. i do. it's what i've been trying to do for the past five years. small things. things i can do to help you from inside the capitol. until he noticed, and it was too late. i think it was lucy gray who made me realise that this world needed changing, and im so, so sorry for what he did to her, and the fact that i couldn't stop him from becoming.. a monster."
- barb sits down next to tigris, and wipes a tear from her cheek. she then says in a soft, comforting tone, which is a stark contrast to how she was just a few minutes before:
- "why don't you come in. we'll talk over some tea."
aaand that's all i have so far!! tysm for the ask, im so glad that i could get someone else to ship them!!

and it becomes your most hated book of all time - Sam plays the main male character of the adaptation of this book (Me Before You)> lol
I even liked the film, the chemistry between him and Emilia is wonderful, but the film is kind of pointless. That ending, I can't even watch again. What makes it even worse is knowing that there is a second book in which he has a daughter, like??????? How does he have a daughter??? Does not make any sense. I thought he was going to give up because he was in love with a woman who loved him and believed they could be happy together. And they were happy together. What makes it worse for me is that in the film Untouchable, which is a true story, there is a similar story, about the person who helps him, and gives him meaning, in the end the character gets married and is happy. Will ends up being selfish in the end. I hate how he wants Clarke there, and the fact that she's gone. Fuck it, no really. The end is he gave her money, fuck. It wasn't about the money, and it shouldn't be. She has a shitty family and a shitty boyfriend, just like he had a shitty family and a shitty girlfriend. It's worth it for Sam and Emilia's performances.
I've never actually watched the film, only read the book. For completion's sake, I suppose I will have to tackle it one day, but every time I imagine having to watch it, a sense of dread creeps on me. It's the worst piece of fiction I have ever engaged with (I've read the first 50 Shades book and this is worse!) and I'm worried I will throw something at my screen and break my TV. I don't believe in the "chemistry" argument, it means nothing to me and Emilia Clarke... I'm trying very hard but her voice and laugh grate on me so much, plus I don't see her as that great an actress.
Anyway, so here we are, I finally get to talk about it (can you believe this @jesstasticvoyage). Here it is, the reason why I don't interact with any other Sam Claflin fans, apart from Jess who is able to handle me. (I get notes from the same users on my original Sam posts, and I see you; it's not you, it's me! You'll see why.) Fucking Me Before You.
If you go through my Sam posts, you will see that I never mention this film, not even when I talk about his book adaptations. The only time I did name it was when I listed the female directors he worked with, bc the film has a female director. When I became a fully fledged Sam fan in 2020, I saw how beloved the film was and how everyone cried over it (why?) and how I could not escape it every time I read any article or interview, and I understood that I will have to be on my own. I couldn't believe how amazing Sam's filmography was, and yet nobody talked about it, it was all Finnick (who is at least cool, despite all my issues with THG that I've just posted about)--and this garbage.
Let me just make something clear, I don't hate MBY bc of its ending. I actually like the ending. I like that he chose death over being with Louisa, bc it contradicts this supposed great love story the author is trying to sell. Also I absolutely loathe Louisa Clark. She is my most hated character of all time and the worst protagonist I've ever read the POV of. She is stupid, the stupidest cow in the whole fucking galaxy. She even fails at being a manic pixie dream girl. I hate her so, so much. Every time I have the misfortune of coming across that scene where she sits on his lap in the wheelchair and they are on the dancefloor and she is laughing, I want to hit her in the face so hard that she fall backwards, cracks her skull and dies. I hate her.
The book is also very poorly written. I see Colleen Hoover get so much hate these days, but idk, I think Jojo Moyes is way worse. Maybe she's not on that many people's radar, to which I say: good! She's also allegedly plagiarised another author. The only reason I don't want to invent a time machine to go back in time and prevent her birth is my fear of creating the timeline where Sam will not break his second ankle and becomes a footballer instead of an actor, so you see that wouldn't have been any good.
Now, I've read pieces from people who are more knowledgeable about this than me that MBY is ableist, and I could make big posts about how ableist it is, but I don't bc it would only come off as insincere. (I didn't realise it was in fact ableist until I read those pieces.) I'm all about authenticity, I don't do virtue signalling/performative wokery. You can say I hate it for the wrong reasons. I hate the book bc it's such a fucking cheap tearjerker that only got published bc the publishers knew it would make people cry. But also I hate the fact that it uses disability as a device to tell a cheap tearjerker, so maybe in a roundabout way it is ableism that I hate it for. (I will post something about the ableism though, just for info.)
The protagonist is an idiot with no skills, woefully unqualified for the job she is hired for (she fails at every other previous job she tries!). All the characters are terribly shallow and one-dimensional. Will's mother is a bitch bc... reasons? Bc the author wants her to be? Overdone tropes of an inattentive bf and a bitch of an ex-gf. You see I don't think Alicia was shitty, it's that Louisa presents her that way and she is not a reliable narrator. Ofc she describes her as a bitch. Alicia explained to Louisa that she tried with Will after his accident, but he pushed her away (even though Alicia doesn't owe Louisa any explanation, and a cow like Louisa has no right to judge her, or anyone else for that matter).
From Tv Tropes MBY YMMV page:
Unintentionally Sympathetic: Will's ex and his friend. We're clearly supposed to hate them for hooking up, but it's not like she ditched him the minute he got hurt. She points out that he relentlessly pushed her away and rebuffed all her efforts to be there for him. Her moving on was inevitable and you can't really fault them for eventually turning to each other—obviously, their efforts to comfort each other turned into something more—she outright says that they've been friends for ages and that he was a great support to her after the accident.
Jojo is presenting MBY as this big love story. Except it isn't. Louisa has a Florence Nightingale complex, and Will. Doesn't love Louisa. "You're the only thing that makes me get up in the morning." Sure, that's why he kills himself. For which I don't blame him, if the other option is being with Louisa. But that means it's not love!
But you're right that it's pointless, bc it achieves nothing. If he decided to live and then died of natural causes, then yeah, that would have been a different matter, that would have meant that the protagonist succeeded at something.
Screenshot of a funny one-star review on Goodreads:
Tumblr media
I do wonder if Jojo has a handfeeding fetish. I shudder when I think about watching Sam being hand-fed by Emilia Clarke. I really don't think I can take on this film.
Louisa inheriting money from Will, idk, I have no opinion of it and Louisa is not even the type of a woman that knows how to enjoy money. What's she gonna do with it, buy a million pairs of stripey tights?
As for the sequel, it looks like it's a trilogy and Will's kid is I think one of those most boring tropes where a guy didn't know he had a child for years bc the mother didn't tell him. Jojo once again showing her lack or ideas. Gilmore Girls did it, Peaky Blinders did it and worst of all, even fucking Star Trek Picard did it, and those are just shows that I've watched lately!
I have heard of the Untouchable film (I found it when I was looking up Omar Sy bc I liked him in Lupin). I planned to watch it but then forgot. I really need to check it out, it looks good.
This got long... thanks for reading.

From the Psychoanalysis OC asks 🖤
❔- Which nominally "good" character do you like the least? (as a person)
❓- Which nominally "bad" character do you like the most? (as a person)
💩- How many of your characters have self-esteem issues and are you aware that we all enjoy your presence on the hellsite?
Thanks, Laur!!
❔- Which nominally "good" character do you like the least? (as a person)
Probably Rose's youngest brother, Louis. I like him, but I never explored him the same way I did with Samuel. Probably because there's 10½ years of difference between him and Rose. He didn't share the same experiences as his older siblings.
It's not I don't like him, it's I know nothing about him... And 💁‍♀️ (Rose could kill me for this) It's not his fault, tho. Poor Lou. He's a good person.
❓- Which nominally "bad" character do you like the most? (as a person)
Alfie counts as OC? 😂 I don't have bad characters that I like. Evert is there but I hate him with my soul. I need to create some likeable bastards.
💩- How many of your characters have self-esteem issues and are you aware that we all enjoy your presence on the hellsite?
I'm sure Evert (the original, not in thg) has a lot of self-esteem issues. Behind the "I'm a multimillionaire with a very young wife" there's a man who thinks he could do better, but is a loser. And it's okay to be a loser, but he hides his insecurities being a piece of shit. And that's the problem.
I don't think my girls have big self-esteem problems. Rose has some insecurities in both canon and modern times regarding Tommy, especially in modern times. Because Tommy is a handsome, smart man and Alfie's ex. And she can't offer Alfie the same as him, so... It's on Alfie to help her to understand the opposite.
Aveline has zero self-esteem problems, she knows her value.
Aveline is like:
Tumblr media
😂.
Lucky her.
And the last part of the question? 🙈❤️.

alright!! took a while to reply but here we go:
1. the separation being something that existed to a degree (just without the hostility), but then exacerbated by the capitol manufacturing & keeper community post-dark days adds a lot of depth how much things changed post dark days & i love it <3
2. "Where the masons took pride in their work, the weapons manufacturers took pride in the Capitol's adoration." <- i love the contrast here between internal (district) vs external validation (capitol) between the cutters and keepers!!
3. thank you for the clarification! i definitely have not given the masons enough thought (but i am now- my eyes are getting so opened 👀👀)
4. "cutters by blood, keepers by trade" <- ooo love that!! it's really interesting to think about the differences between motives going into peacekeeping and how it changes the perception of whether they're considered "traitorous" or not. it's also presents a very slippery slope of cutters that are trying to maintain their traditions, even while peacekeeping, and being challenged as they do so. what happens when a tradition starts to slip away because they aren't around their community & have to practice it on their lonesome? what happens when it starts to fade away, despite their best efforts? what happens when they return home and the person they are when they return isn't the same as when they left? what happens when they return home and they don't quite fit in anymore? (i lots of feels about that, as i'm sure you can tell)
5. ah okay- it makes a lot of sense for the capitol to phase it out and pretend like nothing was happening. it's def would be a lot easier to prevent pushback if they keep it on the down low- there will always be people who realize that the excuses being given are BS, but without something concrete, it's much harder for people to group together and point out definitively that the capitol is doing it on purpose (even tho they are).
6. bit of a follow up to thoughts on #4 - i could yap so much about marcus and sejanus & how (despite sejanus's best efforts) his attempts to keep up traditions- like the breadcrubs- would still make him look like a poser in the eyes of marcus (who sees him as a district traitor). and with wren- i have so many feelings about how he tries to stay connected to the traditions in d2. like,, him attending the harvest festival?? that's his culture, and he considers it as much, but also his experience is not quite the same compared to someone who lived their entire life in d2 and has attended them every year (vs him, and being forced to miss it some years bc he's in the capitol) & that probably eats at him on a certain level :(
7. always insane over propaganda thoughts in the career districts- i just know that sunrise on the reaping is going to dial up my thg hyperfixation to 11 (as if it isn't already at that level haha). katniss's growth as she sees the way the capitol has bred dissent in the districts and the way her perspective shifts on "who the real enemy is" is so <333 and it's always interesting to think about the other way around- instead of growing together and learning that people are on the same side, exploring how people grow apart and learn to see others as enemies because of propaganda
8. yeah!! ideological AND physical rift causing separation!! there's so many factors contributing that it can't be easily undone, and is much more easily exacerbated (which the capitol takes full advantage of)
oc au traditions: the contrast in the ways that different villages practice their traditions is so cool to think about! especially with villages that are more aggressive but discreet with the traditions they practice. from an outside (capitol) perspective, since they're not "dissenting" as overtly, it could help them fly under the radar bc they're not seen as a place where propaganda needs to be pushed as harshly (which helps the traditions live on bc they can keep passing them down with less capitol pushback)
your d2 lore is so interesting & i love reading about it :D
thank you again for your response!!
hello again! do you mind going more in depth about the cutters and keepers (and the ideological divide between them)? you’ve already mentioned that propaganda has affected the keepers more- is that a purposeful thing done by the captiol? or something perpetuated by the keeper community themselves? a mix of both?
Hello, dear! I'm going to write this with as much neutrality as possible because the lore I have created is long and extensive and I don't want that clouding this response.
I want to stick to as close to the canon as possible and my interpretation of the canon without having what I created leech through [especially since it tends to get jumbled in my head].
Get ready for another long one, Backpacks!
I have always believed that post-Dark Days there has to be that separation between trade and industry, especially in a district that then has two principle industries. Prior to the Dark Days, there was much more community between the trades-folk of 2, everything was very unified and friendly to an extent, which is why Katniss mentioning the first rebellion and the Victor tributes holding has as a sign of unity between the districts mirrors that community and solidarity (CF, 258).
But war changes things in unbelievable ways. There were those who remained loyal to the Capitol of course, by way of taking their names that have Greco-Roman origins (Strabo, Sejanus, Cato, Brutus, Enobaria), and then there were those who remained loyal to their people and their trade, who saw the military industry as a disruption to their work and community and traditions. They were more aware of their slavery once the military entered their lands and held a stronger Capitol favor.
Gale had a point when he said: "It's to the Capitol's advantage to have us divided amongst ourselves." (THG, 14)
District 2 is one know for its strength in not just its manufactured, propagandized kind, but prior to that when it was full of stonecutters, mountain-miners, blacksmiths, etc. and that strength is just as strong if not stronger after the Dark Days among the trades-folk. Where before there was a healthy delineation between the natural trades of the district, after the first rebellion that bond grew stronger and closer among the working-class because of the military invasion. There was less care put towards whether people mingled between a hewer or layer mason (historically hewer masons [those who cut the stone] was a far more contentious and lucrative job than a layer mason [those who set the stone]) and more of an effort to maintain their community as trades-folk in the face of an oppressive military who wanted nothing to do with them.
So the clear divide between the two industries was done by the Cutters in an effort to steer clear of both becoming a part of the propaganda (in both industry and Games-realted) and siding with the new invaders. There was a high likelihood of ostracization among the Cutter community to those who became Peacekeepers once it was exclusive to 2—prior to the first rebellion, I think it was seen more like how Plutarch had explained it "[as] a way for their people to escape poverty and a life in the quarries. They're raised with a warrior mind-set." (MJ, 83). I do see that last sentence as being more appropriate post-Dark Days, but that's neither here nor there.
As for the Keepers, they are an oppressive, invading force that were not welcomed by the natives of 2 at large, but they are also amazing at brushing that off if it meant more of a chance of wealth and success within the district (and within the Games too, of course). They knew that they were in better favor with the Capitol compared to the Cutters after the Dark Days and more so because they saw themselves as better than the Cutters, still District and not Capitol, but at least they weren't Cutters. And those who came from the Capitol to be stationed in 2? Well, they were all kinds of high and mighty! But as I said in a tik tok breaking down District 2 and my love for it: "the loyalty of District 2 has always been in something that has been Capitol made." (1:42-149).
In regards to the propaganda having more of an affect with the Keepers, I believe it is a mix of both and it has to be. The superiority complex of the Keepers (as in: those born and bred for it, not Cutters who join) comes from sustaining the Capitols favor but it is because of that propaganda that is so deeply imbedded into the district. Once they came into the picture as the new Capitol favorite, they didn't flaunt it so much as usurp it once various military installations came about, like The Nut, that did away with various Cutter work. Maintaining that "warrior mind-set" works with children who saw that as a thing of pride and not a thing to do out of poverty and upper class mobility. I still am having difficulty distinguishing both a timeline and an explanation for how the propaganda becomes successful within the Cutter community because I simply can't see it as A Thing™ without an intense feeling of betrayal to both your heritage and your people*, but again, that's a question for another day.
By Panem, I hope I answered this well! I feel like I kinda dropped the ball on the Keeper bit, but then again, I'm in the minority & don't give them much thought compared to everyone else.
*Please ask me if you want me to talk about Lyme in regards to that sentence because OH BOY IS THIS ALL ABOUT HER!
Also I almost started this with an excerpt from my silly OC fanfic but a ficlet of a scene, only to realize that my open statement completely contradicts that! Anyway, here it is at the end so you can't say I didn't do it in the actual answering of this ask!
Because if the years of watching District 2 pairs reach victory has taught her anything, it’s that those from 2 are loyal to their community. Of masonry or military. And that it’s the worst part of watching The Games in District 2, how much the animosity grows amongst the crowd at even the slightest difference in trade or birthplace is put to question the chance of triumph as one tribute falls.  But is the answer so simple? A mere difference in industry? In home? The Cutters: hewer and layer masons, quarry-folk, stone and crystal miners, blacksmiths. The Keepers: soldiers—the common grunt and almost unheard of 2 born general—, cadets in schools, Peacekeepers stationed throughout the country never to return for 20 years, the hundreds working in The Peak*. The southern desert folk and their blunt nature, intrenched in tradition that mirrors what it was before. The northern mountain people and their river sweet ways, creating new rituals after living so close to their invaded neighbors.  No, nothing as simple as that. Their mutual destruction is not an echo of past rivalries, but of present vows.
*What I think the natives of 2 call The Nut since that name came about by the 13 rebels, not the natives

Hi! I'm new to the Everlark fandom. Having only finished the books and the movies, I'm now working my way through all the meta I can find. And I love your blog, thank you for providing a thought provoking material.
There's one thing I'd like to read more about, and oddly enough, I haven't seen it covered much in the Everlark meta: Katniss' behaviour (attitude) towards the highjacked Peeta after he had been rescued and returned to her. Have you made analysis post about it, maybe? If so, would you please redirect me there? Or to any other posts you might know on the matter.
This part of the book and Katniss' attitude upset me so much, it felt like she failed Peeta. Failed to be there for him when he needed her the most, and only after Haymitch berated her, she felt ashamed. I was so sad that it took Haymitch to open her eyes, that she didn't find it in her on her own. I'm not saying she owed Peeta romantic affection, love or relationship, but I think she owed him human support and investment - and that she failed to give him. She chose to remove herself completely from the situation and fled. She only got back on track when Peeta started showing definite signs of getting better (after he arrived to the Capitol mission). At that point, I honestly wished for Peeta to heal but for Katniss to live him alone, once and for all. It devastated me so much, that I still cannot get over it. When they got back together in the Epilogue - it was logical and according to Katniss' nature, Gale was right (she needed Peeta to heal, she couldn't function without him, so she stayed with him) - but it felt like she didn't actively choose Peeta, but drifted towards him because he was there. It felt more like it was about what she could take from him than give him (because she loved him). And with the gap that the lack of her support for Peeta created when he was highjacked, this leaves me kind of bitter. I wish this thing was somehow addressed in the the book, but it never was. The films kind of played the whole thing down because in the film we didn't see Katniss' inner thoughts on the matter, which in the books were the worst part of it all.
Don't get me wrong, in the end it's good they grew back together and healed each other, I'm glad. I liked the epilogue, with all the hope it brings. They made each other happy. She made Peeta very happy, and it counts for something.
But my issues about the gap between the highjacked Peeta and the absent Katniss still stand.. And I haven't seen them addressed anywhere. Maybe there's another side to it which I overlook.
Maybe you or your followers don't mind elaborating or redirecting me to the existing discussions on the matter.
Sorry for the long rant and thanks a lot!❤️ I just can't stop thinking about THG and Everlark 😅
Hi! Welcome to THG/Everlark fandom! I'm glad you like my blog. 🥰
As for your question, yes, we've discussed this matter (the way Katniss treated Peeta when he was hijacked). Many times, to be more specific. I'll redirect you to some metas about this topic, but I want to talk about a few things beforehand:
First of all, I understand your upsetness at the way Katniss treated Peeta when he was hijacked. She really didn't treat him fairly, and it was a good thing Haymitch openned her eyes. But you're not considering one thing: She was suffering A LOT. What she did was selfish, but understandable. Can you imagine what it feels like to lose someone you love in the way Katniss lost Peeta? She never wanted to love anyone, because she was afraid of suffering. But she fell in love with Peeta anyway. And then he was ripped away from her, and brainwashed into believing he HATED her. It was so much for her to bear, and she was just a TEENAGER. Also, in the beginning, she couldn't do much to help him in his recovery, because he was a threat to her. He literally tried to kill her, and he couldn't even hear her name without freaking out. So, when we consider all of this, we can empathize with her and understand why she acted the way she did.
As for what you said about her choice for Peeta, I definitely don't agree with that. She didn't choose Peeta just because "she couldn't function without him". She chose him because she loved him, and had been loving him for awhile. What you said suggests she never felt anything for him and only chose him because she was emotionally dependent on him, and it's not true. She started loving him long before that. In Catching Fire, when she said she needed him and kissed him like she never did before, their relationship became 100% real. Nothing she did from that moment on was an act. If it weren't for the hijacking, they surely would have got together a lot sooner.
By the end of MJ, Katniss said she needed Peeta to survive, but it's not to be taken literally. What Suzanne Collins was trying to convey with that passage is that Katniss wasn't choosing only a partner, but also the future she wanted to have. She needed hope, and only Peeta could give her that. Gale couldn't. And yes, she made a choice. She didn't choose Peeta just because "he was there". She chose him because she loved him (don't forget she told him "real"), and needed him. And it would have happened anyway, as she said herself. She could have chosen to be alone (romantically) and to be only friends with Peeta, as they used to be before the Quarter Quell. She could have chosen to be with someone else. She could have chosen to try and approach Gale (she knew he was in d.2. She could have tried to contact him). But she didn't do any of these things. She CHOSE to be with Peeta. Despite all of her fears in regards to romantic relationships, she chose him. And this is one of the many evidences that she loved him. Also, the fact that she only talked about what Peeta could give her in that passage doesn't mean she wasn't willing to give him anything. Throughout the books, she helped him and saved his life so many times. And even when he was hijacked, at some point she recognized her mistake and started helping him in his recovery. She was a flawed person (who isn't?), but she cared deeply about him. And in the epilogue, Peeta said "we have each other", which suggests Katniss was there for him too (I'm pretty sure she was).
Well, this got longer than I intended to (haha!), but I hope I helped you understand these points. Now, as promised, here are the links to the metas:

I don't normally jump into people's asks but can I just say I absolutely love your takes regarding the Darkling, Malina and especially Mal? You remind me of why I enjoyed him so much in the first place whilst others hated him. He wasn't dark and unique like the Darkling or particularly vibrant or charismatic like Nikolai; he was just an ordinary teenager who started feeling even more ordinary and unimportant when Alina became the sun summoner. He was then ignored and belittled and forgotten about by many. I did find him difficult at times but is that not the mark of an interesting character and your investment in them? Someone you can love but be disappointed in? Even then his behaviour didn't really bother me because it made sense given what was happening to him. I think rereading the trilogy last year 6-7 years later with fresh eyes and a much more mature outlook made me appreciate him even more than I did as a 19-20 year old (not that age always has a bearing on maturity, it just did with me).
When I see the comments about how he is unlikeable and boring I roll my eyes. What is he? Unlikeable or boring? You can't have an unlikeable personality whilst also having no personality. That makes no sense. It makes even less sense when you hear it from people who have read the whole trilogy and know Mal's significance to the plot. It ain't a boring plotline in the slightest. The hate he recieves has always reminded my of thg fandom back in the day and how vitriolic some people were about Peeta and his personality.
Anyways I really took nothing to do with the fandom for a while and ignored the casting for the show etc because I had had my fill of negativity (and I didn't want the crows to be ignored for the sake of the trilogy's storyline), but the show just drew me back in aha! And metas like yours are what's keeping me around (sorry for this huge rant).
Hello! Thank you so much for this ask.
I just recently "joined the fandom" and read the books so I can’t say I experienced what you and a lot of people that liked Mal in the fandom did - I know it was worst in the early years to like Malina or even say you liked Mal. I came in the right time were people is more vocal about liking Mal and Malina because of the show, but there’s a lot of hate too specially in Twitter.
The moment I finished the books the hate towards Mal was just strange to me because all I saw a teenager that was experiencing too many changes and dealing with trauma, and as you said, often belittled by everyone that was in a higher place. When I think of Mal - all I can think is loyal, devoted and brave. He went thought so much and lost so much to protect Alina, to be loyal to Alina, to help Alina succeed, and it’s only natural for him to feel insecure and frustrated, and that’s why I like him.
He isn’t your typical romantic lead that has a personality that is often popular in YA books. He is flawed, impulsive, exhausting at times - but the journey he goes through during whole books is so complex, sad but most importantly, real. He isn’t here to be a 'bad boy' or a charismatic comedic relief character, he is here to be someone with his heart on his sleeve most of the time and he isn’t here to be fake - he tells Alina exactly how he feels. I think people also don’t see it because we don’t get to explore his POV - i think it would’ve been interesting to have an idea on what he is feeling.
Mal is the one that gets the most undeserved hate on the whole tgt fandom mostly coming from people that resent that he was the one that stayed with Alina at the end and "prevented her" from "reaching her potencial" (if by potential they meant living a life she didn't want). I don’t want to say it comes with maturity but I understood the way he was acting, it only feel very human to me and also why their ending was so beautiful and bittersweet.
And yes, a lot of aspects with Malina reminds me of Everlark. Peeta was Katniss peace, just like Mal represents Alina's peace. Also, Peeta for me is one of the best YA male leads ever because he wasn't your typical male lead, and neither was Everlark as a YA couple. And how interesting that Peeta gets called "boring" constantly while also Katniss ending is a topic of disccusion similar to Alina's, both at the end wanted peace and stay away from the war - and that's perfect.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was happy for him at first. Honestly I was.
It was getting sad for awhile, the way he followed me around like a lost puppy. The lost lovestruck look in his eyes when he looked at me. I felt like a monster, but at the time, I didn't feel that way for Kaminari.
He was my friend, my best friend even. But my lover? I just couldn't phantom it. I remember sitting him down to tell him. He seemed somehow shocked I knew how he felt. The thing about Kaminari is, he wears his emotions on his sleeve. For better or worse.
"So...you know how I feel?" He said, a spark of hope in his voice.
"I do."
"Aaand?..." Christ. He was gonna make me say it.
"I-I'm sorry Kaminari. I just dont feel the same. You're a great guy and all, I just don't feel that way for you. I hope we can stay friends though."
I think I watched his soul shatter that day.
I didn't see Denki for a few weeks after that. Im pretty sure he was avoiding me. Not like I could blame him though. It's hard to get rid of feelings when you see that person everyday. I missed him though. I missed him so much. Looking back, that probably should have been my frist hint.
When he started texting me again, it was a relief. I had my best friend back! And we xkuld actually talk and hang out now. No more lovey eyed guilt trips he didn't even know he was taking me on. Apprently, he'd gotten really into music to process his emotions, and it really helped him heal.
We have Jiro to thank for that.
I don't hate Kyouka. I think she's actually a wonderful girl, and I nothing but thankful for her, for being there for Kaminari when I couldn't be.
That said, the moment he introduced us j saw it. He had that same love struck look in his eyes. It didn't surprise me. Kaminari had the heart of a hopeless romantic, it was made of elastic.
The difference was, she had the same eyes for him. It shocked no one when they started dating. And look, I was happy for them! Denki deserved someone who could love on his level and Jiro fit the bill. She was kind and caring, and they both loved music. I couldn't believe it, but she tought his tone deaf ass to play guitar! They have a small band together now. They make amazing music.
And they really are adorable together. I started inviting Jiro to our hangouts, so she knew she was welcome. At first, I thought I was annoyed at being a third wheel. Watching them curl into eachother on the couch, while I sat on the floor on movie night. How they would get into these feedback loops of just gushing over one another. And don't even get me started on the playlisys.
But, slowly I realized it was more. It was in the way he held her close at all times. They way he talk about her, as if she was some divine gift. It was in the way he looked at her, with those love struck puppy eyes.
Fuck, I missed those eyes being on me.
Leave it to me to only realize I want someone once I couldn't have them. My stomach would turn into knots when's I saw him. My head would feel light, and on the rare occasion it was just us, I'd get damn near giddy. I was a love struck fool.
And, maybe it really was just so I could heal and move on. Maybe it's because I'm selfish. Maybe it was because some tiny part of me hoped he'd leave her for me. But, I told him exactly how I felt.
It started out normal, we were playing Mortal Kombat, but, I guess he noticed my game was off.
"Alright, what's wrong?"
"What do you mean?"
"You lost."
"I lose all the time."
"Yea, but not with noob!" His laughed was always so adorable. "Noobs your main! So what's going on?"
I got cold feet at the question. I was I was sure I wanted to tell him, but now...
"Im fine, I promise."
"Hitoshi, you know you can tell me anything, right?"
"Yea?"
"So why are you keeping secrets now?" He asked. He was right. It didn't ruin things when I rejected him, why wouldn't work out the same way in reverse? And his smiled was so warm, and inviting.
"I-..I think I love you."
"Aww, I love you too bro!"
"No, Kaminari, I mean I love you."
His smile dropped.
"What?"
"Look, I know that I said I didn't feel the same, and at the time I didn't, but I love you! Seeing you with Jiro made me realize, I-"
"Hitoshi, that's not fair." Denki said, uncharacteristically cold. I could see the tears form in his eyes. But, it wasn't the same as last time I saw them. These weren't tears of heart break.
"I waited a whole year for you. I wanted you, for so long, and you told me you didn't want me. Not the other way around. And now thG I'm happy and everything is good, and, for the first time in forever, I feel like I'm not carrying bricks on my chest, you wanna do this? Hitoshi, do you like seeing me hurt?"
"No! Kaminari, I would never do anything to hurt you!"
"Then why tell me?! What did you expect?! For me to just leave Jiro and come running into your arms? I love Jiro. And I'm pretty sure she loves me. She loves me enough not to try and crash everything I worked so hard to build." He was crying now. I wondered how over me he really was. I wondered if that was selfish to think.
"No, I don't want to break anything you built-up. I just had to get it off my own chest. I don't want you to leave Jiro, I just...I dont know."
"I-..I dont know either man. I'm sorry but, I really don't feel the same anymore. I don't know why I'm so mad about it." He confessed. He refused to make eye contact. "I guess I'm just mad that I spent months miserable over the fact that you'd never love me. And, I guess it all feels like it could have been avoided now."
"Im sorry."
"But, I don't know if I want to have avoided it." He wiped his eyes with his sleeve. He wasn't crying anymore, but his eyes still had had a sharpness.
"If I avoided it, I wouldn't have gotten so close to Jiro...but...I just.." He cut his own thoughts off with a groan, hiding his face in his hands.
"Im sorry."
"I know you are." He mumbled. He looked over at him. "I loved you Hitoshi. I really truly did."
"Its not too late, I-" that was the wrong thing to say. A scowl came across his face.
"Yes it is. I loved you. Ed. Past tense. My emotions and how I feel don't get pushed to the side because you finally came you your sense and realized how you felt. My relationship isn't going to just end because you want it to."
He grabbed his backpack and stood up. I wanted to reach out for him and make him stay. But, I knew that would be wrong.
"I-I'm sorry Hitoshi. I just dont feel the same. You're a great guy and all, I just don't feel that way for you anymore. I hope we can stay friends though." He mumbled as he walked to the door. He looked back at me.
"I'll see you later man."
"See you later."
And thats where we are now. I've been laying on my bed going over this entire situation in my head for hours. I definitely could have gone about that last interaction diffrent, but, it doesn't matter. I missed my shot.
Stupid late stage crushes.
I can't help but think about how he must have felt just like this all that time ago. And I feel almost worse knowing I put him through it.
But, I know I can't lose him. He's my best friend, I'd be devastated to lose him completely.
So, I guess I gotta just get over it.
