younger haymitch and his craftsmanship. i've always believed that he'd of learned woodcarving from his father, as we know that katniss’ father made bows. so, it isn't a stretch to assume that it's a possible job in 12, or rather trade. seam men could've had hobbies and trades outside of the mines.
carving out small wooden statues for his younger brother and placing them around the domestic misery of their home. crafting his own bow, setting traps. only knowing that his father (in the case that he's deceased,) lived on in the steadiness of a knife and the peeling of wood. having small calluses from the knives’ handle, knowing how to make good on it as a multipurpose weapon.
when haymitch becomes a victor, it's surprisingly not his talent. it's hidden away after he loses all that is dear to him. a skill left quiet in the roar of the dust.
in truth, his talent is actually being a god at chess, in which he absolutely demolishes any and everyone at it just from knowing countermoves, and assuming right before someone attempts to move their pieces. his experience with hunting helps him keep a sharp eye during, and makes him hyperfocused on a player's actions.
#i also think his father would've taught him how to fight#i believe he would've died when haymitch was 12-13#maybe to one of the mine explosions back then but also to the whippings and punishments in 12 in the early days#nonetheless i'm sure haymitch knows that sentiment of survival from him at least if not anyone else#haymitch abernathy#the hunger games#thg#catching fire#mockingjay#the hunger games trilogy#young!haymitch#angel’ headcanons :
