he very much values loyalty and competence - they’re just about the only things he values in people, outside of their usefulness as test subjects - so someone who’s devoted to him the way you are is 

a scientific background is ideal, of course, if only because you’re less likely to cause any damage to yourself or the subjects (he doesn’t really care about damage to himself even though he REALLY SHOULD), but he’s less bothered by a lack of experience if you’ve shown you’re willing to learn and help

it’s even surprising to him how much he enjoys having another partner in the lab! the number of people he has any patience for, let alone actually likes, can be counted on one hand; you’ve earned a rare and coveted position. even things that would annoy him coming from anyone else seem endearing when it’s you 

with that being said, you should still be able to hold your own! we all know Herbert has a domineering personality and will run roughshod over anyone who lets him, even when they’re the closest person in his life. he appreciates a helpful partner, but doesn’t need a sycophant who won’t set any boundaries 

also if he doesn’t have someone willing to slam on the brakes, he’s gonna fuck around with the wrong thing and Find Out eventually and then you’ll be down a boyfriend, which would be a shame

in all seriousness, i can’t see him realizing how accommodating you are in a nsfw context at first, simply because he’s a big virgin generally too consumed with ~science~

it’s not until the first time go to bed (or, you know, an examination table. whatever works) together that it really clicks. he doesn’t actually mean to order you around, but he’s so used to being a bossy little shit taking the lead in the lab that what’s supposed to be a polite request for you to take your shirt off comes out as a command - and when your eyes glaze over and you rush to follow his orders, waiting for the next with bated breath, it sets a fire in his blood. his next order is very much intentional

and once he’s had his fill he cleans himself off and goes right back to work, leaving you sprawled out on whatever surface he fucked you on until your legs are strong enough to carry your weight (or until he needs to work off some steam again) 

he’ll make up for it once he’s out of the Science Zone™ (as much as Herbert can ever leave the science zone.) when he’s not still half-focused on his experiments, his touch is gentler, his attentions fully devoted to your pleasure - and this time, if you try and muffle yourself, you can bet he’s not going to let you
