Thoughts on toxic yuri?
SUPER depends on what you mean by this and which works you're discussing. if you mean toxic yuri in the sense of 'yuri intentionally depicting toxic relationships': huge fan of this, i love toxic relationships of all sorts. however, there's also a trend in both yaoi & yuri to include noncon/dubcon and generally toxic relationship dynamics specifically because it's yaoi or yuri, then present them as romantic. this is really common in published manga/doujinshi and older fics. i feel it's less common these days. i don't think these should be banned or anything and i'm not judgemental of people who read them. however, i don't personally like it and i do feel it's worth unpacking why people go to this as a default. i think people tend to equate these two things OR to mistake a desire to think critically about the second as a call to ban it. because of this, discussions about the matter tend to get really fraught; everyone is using different definitions and getting mad at each other even in cases where they'd probably agree. (not that there aren't people who are genuinely saying ridiculous things about one or the other.)
