This may be glaringly obvious to literally everyone but like...I still have to talk abt it.
I really do feel like Dyn's helmet is more like a security blanket now. Yes, it's still the last part of his tribe that he has left, but the helmet has always been something for him to hide behind. I'm not saying Dyn is a coward. No. Not at all. His actions speak very well of his bravery. All I'm saying is that Dyn uses his helmet as a barrier. That armor isn't just protecting his body, it's protecting his vulnerability...deep down he's still afraid of losing all the people he cares for, but he doesn't want anyone to know because in his position as a bounty hunter (and a Child of the Watch), that is a fatal weakness. Yet, his weakness is clear once he aquires Grogu; with or without the helmet, everyone is aware of his intense fear of losing his son.
I like that the helmet rule is bending and cracking. I can't stress enough the importance of Dyn meeting Bo-Katan. For the first time, he met other Mandalorians who taught him that The Way was not the only way, and that perhaps his creed is a hindrance to his own wellbeing.
Shit, the whole episode with Mayfield shows us just how exposed he feels when he is not wearing his helmet. The fear, awkwardness, and guilt is apparent. His helmet is a shell of false confidence. For his own sake, I hope he starts to take it off more, because I think the helmet is a manifestation of Dyn's self-destructive tendencies. Now that he is establishing a circle of supportive friends, I don't think he needs to hide anymore.
#i could write an entire essay about why i love dyn so much as a character#and how fucking relatable he is#spoilers#mandalorian spoilers#tagging spoilers bc yknow...some ppl may not have seen this stuff yet#free my boy#i also love that he's a neutral character jdhshshsh
