okay, but imagine little boy sokka one day accidentally finds out he can waterbend and him not wanting to learn it because 1) it's katara's thing, 2) he honestly doesn't really care all that much because it's not as practical as becoming a good warrior, hunter, and leader, and 3) ho boy, imagine if anyone found out there were two waterbender left at the southern water tribe and not just one. they'd all be in more danger than they are in already. he'd try to keep it to himself for as long as he can, not wanting to get anyone in trouble so he never actually practices it unless he's alone and has nothing else to do. but then he and katara are out alone one day, and katara notices he's actually using waterbending to steer their boat, and she gets excited because now there's someone to practice with, even if it's her annoying brother. sokka still refuses to learn, though; there are more important things to care about ― protecting katara, the tribe's safety, them getting enough food, and all the other responsibilities hakoda put on him when he left. it isn't until they travel the world that sokka first begins to actually tap into his abilities and learn to use them ― and here's where i could see it going two ways. either he's taking it all way too seriously and is becoming pretty good at it at a strangely high speed, or he still thinks it's not important to put actual effort into learning it, and so he only manages to do the bare bones of it. there's no in between. eventually, he would become at least adequate with it, although he will probably prefer his weapons ( and find fun ways to incorporate bending with weaponry ... or just some fun ways to use bending in general )
