Past events and characters inspire the works of writers of historical fiction in whatever form and, in so far as they seek to maintain that their central characters and events are 'real', all the authors, playwrights and directors find it important to defend the authenticity of the main events and actions. Catherine Delors, herself a historical novelist, has described the film version of The Other Boleyn Girl as 'melodramatic abuse of history' in its portrayal of Anne Boleyn as adulterous and incestuous. Frequently writers of historical fiction lay claim to being 'historians'. For instance, Philippa Gregory, despite her training in English Literature, has been happy to be called a historian as a result of her many novels about the Yorkist and Tudor periods.

#the 2003 version is also slanderous of mary boleyn#in that version their incest is literally her idea (???)#which kind of makes her seem like an asshole lol#i mean not that there would be any safety in owning it but when they're convicted of that she's kind of just like hmm. whoops!#and then the afterword is her looking at the camera and humblebragging about how her children are going to survive to elizabeth's court#i also always thought that was a miniseries and apparently it's a telefilm#which is a different model of storytelling...anyways#a blend of fact and fiction would be less of a problem with a more intellectually curious public#as it stands those blends tend to make the viewers believe the former means the latter is equally 'true'#(like in that production...chapuys' report about shirtmaking is in it but that doesn't mean the production's narrative theory#of henry carey being hviii's and catherine carey being william carey's is anything that can be proved#to say...the least of the other unproven aspects of the narrative...)#rosemary o'day
