14 and 24 for the ask game?
(For this)
14. Is there a character or ship you were sure you would never write/draw but now you've changed your mind?
I never expected to do much with Yen Sid, haha, and yet he ended up being Baldr's mentor in "Fill the Cracks with Gold." He was never a character I was particularly interested in, but sending Baldr to the Mysterious Tower (and, therefore, away from Scala) made sense, and the story...I won't say it made me like him that much more, but it did at least get me thinking more about what his history was in KH, haha.
24. What's your favorite thing about [character]?
Since no character was specified for this one, I'm just going to run through the Union Leaders, haha. I don't know if these are like--favorite favorite things, but they're things I like about all of them!
Ephemer: As a writer, I love writing about him getting into (and causing) shenanigans due to his curiosity, haha, but as a reader/player, I just love like--there's something very compelling about the idea of him learning how to live again after his home fell apart and being able to make a place for his friends to come back to, even if they never see each other again. Like--I know we don't actually get to see his recovery in canon, but it's still just. A very cool thing.
Skuld: Despite Skuld being one of my favorite characters, I kind of just sat here for a while and went, "...Uh. Everything?" Like--I love that she's so driven, I love both her kindness and commitment to justice, I love the flashes of anger we get to see, and as a writer, I love getting to expand on things that the game didn't have space to show us (ex. how did going back to the Keyblade War affect her? does she have any qualms about deceiving the Dandelions? what kind of shenanigans can she get into with Ephemer and the Player?). Also, the idea of her being Subject X is so fascinating, and if it is canon, I'm really excited to see how that plays out.
Brain: I feel like every time I write Brain, I'm just going, "Hey, did you know he really loves his friends? Don't let the 'cool guy' facade fool you, he really loves his friends, guys." And I just--love that despite how suspicious he seems on the outside, he still cares so much about the Dandelions and other Union Leaders.
Lauriam: I love his kindness...and I also find it really interesting that he ends up becoming Marluxia, despite this. Like--there is something very fascinating about a character who starts out very caring (even if he has flashes of anger), and then ends up descending into villainy. Like--he gives up everything about him that his younger siblings loved because he's so desperate to regain his memories of them, and the tragedy of that is just--man.
Ven: His story in KHUX makes me go feral. Like. He was a lonely kid who just wanted friends, and he got them, but at a terrible price, and then he sacrifices himself for those friends anyways, and it's just--man. MAN. The fact that he starts UX so unsure of himself, and then he's able to be brave at the end in order to save his friends, even if everything went wrong--I just. It makes me feel a lot of emotions.
#thanks for the ask!!#...i think 24 was supposed to be more about their personalities than their stories#but uh. since it didn't specify i guess it's alright?

okah I had that interview with my old job (if you can call it that, since they had no intention of recruiting me and I have no desire to return) and it was certainly illuminating lol. under a cut in case you don't give a shit about corporate nonsense but it's funny I promise
what it comes down to is that the role is "different" now in two key ways: (1) they want someone who currently is or has been a software engineer but also is a technical writer, and who'll start out as an IC and the only member of the team but will eventually scale up to grow the team and become a manager, and (2) has experience working directly with product teams, UX writing, GTM strategy, etc.
re. point two I mentioned that not only are those all things I did (because they're common things that most TWs do), but that they're listed on my resume almost verbatim, which is why linkedin kept telling me I'd be a good fit for the job, and re. point one I was frank and said that like, not only did the job posting itself not convey that at all (because again, I kept getting recommended for it, and everything else in the listing was bog standard TW shit), but basically Good Fucking Luck finding someone who fits that bill lmao. not that "engineer turned technical writer" is unheard of, but it's not the most common path people take, and especially in this job market I'm inclined to think that someone with an engineering background would gravitate towards jobs that pay an engineering salary (i.e., higher than that).
the person I spoke with was pretty receptive about the job listing feedback and said that she didn't write it, the VP of Whoever did, and that they have had quite a few candidates who match the skillset/background they're looking for but I'm skeptical. not to mention how they're not "officially" requiring it to be a hybrid role but they're trying to hire people "who are near the office," whatever that means.
in any case, this confirms all my suspicions about how waterlogged this company's hull currently is, and I wish all the best to whoever lands this role and finds themselves with way more responsibilities than they bargained for. god knows how overwhelmed I was by the end, even with three years of institutional knowledge under my belt. I can only hope the excellent readme files I left behind will make it easy for them to parse my docs toolchain.
also this was a great learning opportunity for me to realize that people suck at communicating what they want—which, okay, I knew that already, but like specifically for job postings. there are soooo many reasons you can apply to a job that perfectly matches your experience and get insta-rejected anyway, but it hadn't occured to me that "they actually want something totally different from what they wrote" could be one of them lol. and then I guess the flip side of that is how you can apply to a job posting and then wind up in a role that's not at all what was advertised. although that is one of the things you should try to sniff out ahead of time in an interview. so watch out I guess

So, thinking about it, I'm going to talk about The Weight of a Keyblade (https://archiveofourown.org/works/56050324) which is a Kingdom Hearts fic I wrote earlier this year.
--
The excerpt:
Sora falls into a routine after that, training with Ira and working his way through the book he was given.
The book Ira lends him makes Sora work for the information within its pages. It is the hardest he has ever done research and includes school projects. The pages are faded and the ones that he can read are dense and difficult to parse, with old words and turns of phrase that make him consult dictionaries and other sources. And he can’t exactly ask for help. Because asking for help will likely reveal Ira and even if nothing has been said, Ira wants to remain out of the way and Sora doesn’t want to betray that. So, if he wants this information, he will have to get it himself.
And he does, slowly but surely. Slowly but surely the book starts to open up to him and he learns.
He learns about the age of Fairy Tales, the way Keyblade Wielders used to work together in unions.
He learns about the way that Keyblades used to evolve and how materials had to be gathered to allow that to happen.
He learns about how Keyblades were often considered a reflection of their Wielder’s Hearts. And while that makes sense to him, it also makes Sora wonder what it says that his Keyblade is just the Kingdom Key.
The more he learns, the more questions he has, and he hopes that Ira will answer them all.
There’s a voice that suggests that maybe this is a dangerous path to be on. He’s seen what too much knowledge can lead to, but at the same time someone needs to recover this knowledge.
Sora doesn’t tell anyone about his training sessions with Ira. It's a decision he came to a while ago. For selfish reasons, he realizes. And then kind of smiles because he didn’t think he could be selfish. He tries to rationalize a practical reason, but outside of respecting Ira’s privacy, he can’t really land on one.
It’s selfish because he finally has a teacher all his own. Lea and Kairi have Merlin, and Kairi has been talking about training under Aqua. Terra and Ven had Master Eraqus. Roxas and Xion haven’t really expressed interest. Riku is already a Master. Sora knows everyone sort of considers him a Master, even if he doesn’t have the Mark. But everything he knows about Keyblades and fighting comes from learning on the fly. And maybe he wants to learn from someone.
And Ira has been teaching him. Ira takes Sora’s instinctual knowledge and hones it, how to trust his instincts and rely on them. How to get more from his strikes, and use his magic more effectively. How his Keyblade is his Heart and it will guide him. Ira is a tough Master, disciplined and stern but also fair and Sora can’t help but think of Phil in Olympus Coliseum, with the way that there is an unwavering belief that he can go the distance. It means he comes home sore and scraped and when he’s asked, he just says he’s training on his own.
It’s selfish because he can feel himself becoming untethered from this world. The effects of the Power of Waking finally coming home to roost. He should be spending time with his friends. He should be enjoying peace with Kairi and Riku. Instead he goes to a dark alley and trains with a stranger.
And if he’s being really honest, he doesn’t feel that bad about keeping secrets. And that probably scares him most of all.

So, Kingdom Hearts is bonkers.
We all know this and frankly, that's one of my favourite things about this ridiculous franchise. I love how bonkers it is and how with each successive entry into the franchise we get just a little more bonkers. Even if sometimes, my love for the franchise does rub up against my ire for it.
KHX/UX was one of those things. As a mobile game, I hated it. I found it a gacha-hell pay to win that seemed to rely on getting the latest medal to progress through the story, which was told in a really piecemeal way. But I love the Foretellers and the story of the Keyblade War. I think the Foretellers have really neat designs and I'm interested to see how they'll play in future games. And I'm going to keep playing in the Foretellers space until Tetsuya Nomura comes and upends my shit and we will nod at each other respectfully because we both knew this was going to happen.
But I wanted to play in the space before that and imagine what a meeting between our current cast and these mysterious masters might mean. I wrote a fic a while ago (Struggle of Sorts) that focused on Aced meeting the Twilight Town gang, and then a few years later, I guess it was Ira's turn. (They are my favourites so that makes sense). And Ira and Sora were a good match (also inspired by some rp threads). In the fic as a whole, Sora discovers Ira in a empty corner in Radiant Garden and Ira agrees to train him, taking place in a timey-wimey AU post-KH3 where the power of waking consequences took a little while to catch up. And the reflections the two of them go through.
Sora's an interesting character to write for. He's the kind of character who is earnest, bright and trusting, and I think it's really easy to tip into him being too much of those things, when he's really not. So it was fun to write him in a way where he has to be a bit more thoughtful and studious, which I don't think comes naturally to him. He's a very charge ahead kind of character. And for being such an open character who wears his heart on his sleeve, finding that he has the capacity to keep secrets and maybe just have a little shred of the things the game kind of defines as belonging to Darkness was fun. But I only ever want to keep him at a shred. Sora's too good for that otherwise.
I also liked the idea of Sora kind of feeling like he's behind since so much weight has been placed on the idea of Masters and Mastery in the games. And lamenting not having a Master and having to figure things out on his own. (And I recognize part of that is just the result of the games being what they are and how they're structured and all that). It's easy to consider Sora a Master via experience rather than formality but I think that also weighs on him. So finding someone who is willing to work with him I think is really validating, and something he kind of wants to keep secret. He's got to catch up to Riku somehow and he can only get so far on his own. Even if it means avoiding his friends for a bit.
It was also fun working in some of the oddball details from KHX/UX and how that has changed. I like the idea of these time-seperated keyblade wielders talking shop.
Ira's motives in the fic are a little more muddled, but that is more from the fact that we don't actually know what they're doing, and until the games tell us a bit more, I'm reluctant to stray from the vague. But I do think Ira would be a good master. He successfully led a union after all, and I like the idea of trying to combat the melancholy with trying to help someone.
tl; dr I like these guys a lot and it's a fun space to play and I hope Tetsuya Nomura doesn't upend too much of my shit.

Why do you think DC wanted to boot PKJ off Action Comics ?
Anonymous asked: Expectations for Aaron writing Action?
Well I was working on a NYCC 2023 post, and unfortunately the damn thing suddenly deleted itself. Left me totally drained seeing all that hard work gone, so I'm going to keep it short this go around.

Aaron is a very similar writer to PKJ in both tone and style. If he were taking over for the long term I'd be cautiously optimistic - but he's only doing three issues. Doesn't matter if he sucks or is great, he'll be gone in a blink of the eye. Leaves me with no strong feelings regarding him.
Pitch sounds cool, it's the Multiverse Bizarro that Tomasi used. It will be darker in tone and Bizarro has a new power seemingly. Waid consulted and Aaron says he "passed the Waid test". Shows how influential that Waid has become that he's being brought in to help the other Superman writers. Once an editor always an editor. Timms on art is fine, he's not an artist I have strong feelings for but I liked his work on Son of Kal-El and his brief Superman run with PKJ. Given Bizarro was on the cover of Williamson's first issue but is showing up here, I wonder if this is just Williamson farming out a story to Aaron that he didn't have time for himself anymore.
After Aaron, Williamson takes over for "House of Brainiac" which is the big Superman crossover story. Brainiac wants to find his Queen and is unleashing his Bottled City of Czarnia to get her. Supes, the Superfamily, Lex, and Lobo team up to stop him. Great pitch - but Williamson writing another event by himself is a huge red flag. He's 0/2 on events thus far and my concerns had previously been soothed by the assumption that PKJ would help him this time, which sadly is not the case. If it's shit at least we get to see Sandoval draw the hell out of the fight scenes.
Next we will get at least two more creative teams, one of whom is almost certainly Waid and Henry doing the Phantom Zone/Aethyr storyline. Not happy to see Waid claim that story, his Silver Age sensibilities are not going to live up to what PKJ was building to. Huge disappointment at this chance to let PKJ flesh out the Phantom Zone like he did Warworld pass by. After Waid we have one more team, and if Tom King isn't shooting his shot by now he will never get on a Superbook. Turning Action into an anthology book feels like a last minute decision made to buy time while they try and get a permanent creative team, which I do think has a chance of being King.
As mentioned in other posts, PKJ claims he will still be writing Superman and I believe that means he's been tapped to write the Justice League relaunch. He was saying on Twitter that we would get to see his Warworld plot threads such as Kryl-Ux unfold elsewhere, and also he would touch on the backstory of the events we saw in the FS House of El one shot. Sounds exciting to me, the kind of story actually worth bringing JL back.
Oh and starting with issue 10, Williamson is doing a Superman arc that is a Western, expands on Moonlight's backstory, and brings in Terra-Man. Sign me the hell up for that! Redondo seems to have permanently moved to Superman from Nightwing which means I'm probably dropping Nightwing soon.
For other DC news I am ecstatic to see Spurrier and Campbell reunite for more Hellblazer, but otherwise it was a fairly muted showing from DC aside from one huge rumor that I'll cover in a separate post. Oh and I guess there was the Elseworlds announcement but since that was mostly Batbooks I’m not interested.
Apologies to all the Asks about the new Ultimate Universe, I did get them but they were deleted.

Ultimate Spider-Man - Pitch is perfect, a mid-life Peter inspired by Spiderverse Peter B. Parker is exactly what I want. Ideally this Peter will be married to MJ and a father to Mayday but we can't rule out Hickman throwing a curveball and having him be divorced or dating Liz Allen or something. Seeing DoomReed hold the spider in the vial that Maker had, plus the transition scenes of 6160 Peter wearing all the suits makes me guess that DoomReed will time travel back and give Peter his powers similar to how he and Tony used time travel to save Cap. Thus this Peter will have been Spider-Man for a while, in secret. Or it's setting up a bunch of variant covers and instead we will see what happens when Peter gets his powers much later than usual. Either way I am excited about reading Spider-Man comics again, no mean feat.
Ultimate Black Panther - Great choice for writer, Hill's run on Blade rules and his name dropping Dune as an influence has me hyped since I love the book too and it's influence is all over the work of Hickman and PKJ. Great artist in Caselli. Moss is the editor and that is not great. He edited the main BP book and his tenure has been a disaster. Hickman needs to be involved to protect Hill from Moss. Costume design is not great either, feels 90s in a bad way. Of all the new Ultimate books, this is the one I hope is most like the old UU in terms of updating T'Challa, his supporting cast, and Rogues Gallery for a modern era. Fine to start off with "Ultimate Moon Knight", but let's not wait too long to bring in traditional Panther foes like Achebe who need the spotlight and revamps.
Ultimate X-Men - Not interested. Momoko is a talented artist but I only care about the A-List X-Men. A bunch of OC mutants does not intrigue me. Easy skip.
No Ultimates is surprising but my suspicion is that Black Panther will tell the story of T'Challa housing the Ultimates in Wakanda and Hickman wants to push people towards Hill's book. Eventually the Ultimates will spin out of UBP I reckon.

Expect the same level of quality here as Orlando showed on the previous SW book. That said if this is not setting up the restoration of the twins being mutants, I find more Magneto drama tedious. Either pull the trigger and make them mutants again or keep them away from Magneto and the X-Line.
And that was basically it for Marvel announcements that I care about. Might check out the vampire event since McKay is writing, haven't decided yet.

❤️ and/or 💕 for the fanfic writer ask game!
❤️—> Favorite line!
Oh, another one! (I’m going to share more than one line again…haha.)
I’m a softie (well, ✨always✨, but especially) for the wayfinders. Here’s a couple of my favorite lines from Destiny’s Union:
Terra leaned over and gave Chirithy a small scratch behind the ear.
“Things are better now that we’re together, but we’re all still sad about what happened sometimes.”
“That’s why we have each other,” added Aqua. “To rely on, when we remember the things that hurt us.”
Terra cast a sad smile in Aqua’s direction. “And the things we did that hurt other people.”
“So… you just… embrace all those things..?” asked Chirithy.
“Mhm.” answered Aqua as she cradled it closer. “And speaking of, I think we know someone who could use an embrace right about now.”
💕 My favorite fic?
Yes, I’m going with the obvious choice—The Badlands!
I’m taking this as an invitation to finally share all of my thoughts about this fic so… it’s going to be a long, excited, caffeine-driven reply, haha.
I started writing The Badlands because Ventus… didn’t really say anything in DR! It was understandable, but still kinda too bad, especially since they confirmed that he trained with Master Xehanort for a year—there’s so many interesting things that they might have talked about.
Ven was in his dreams, but he’s also from the era of the Keyblade War. Not a Keyblade War fought over the χ-blade, like Xehanort assumes, but still. So I decided to write a fic where Ven kept his memories (and Chirithy too!) during his training. It was exciting in a “BbS meets DR meets UX” kind of way…haha.
But uh, despite how interesting all that is, obviously Ven’s not in a good situation, so I knew from the get-go this was going to be a sad fic. The way I interpret BbS, MX intentionally isolated Ven in the Keyblade Graveyard so he’d succumb to loneliness/darkness and become his vessel. With his past memories, he’s already feeling very lonely without the other leaders! That’s where Chirithy comes in. They want to be there for Ven, but also don’t want to make his situation worse by getting him punished for spending time with them.
That was the original premise, but then I had the idea of adding Young Xehanort into the story too.
(Context just in case: In The Badlands, YX comes to the future for the first(-ish) time—probably only a couple years after the events of DR. He meets with his future self in the Keyblade Graveyard, and looks over and sees Ven watching them! Ven doesn’t recognize him at all, and assumes he’s just a relative of Master Xehanort, which YX plays along with. He hastily chooses the name ‘Hermod’ to introduce himself and… instantly regrets it.)
The friendship between Ven and ‘Hermod’ was really what made this my favorite fic.
YX is exactly the sort of person a young Ven would want to befriend. Not only is he an experienced Keyblade wielder, (one powerful enough to be at the top of the rankings, I might add!), but he also shares traits with Ephemer, Brain, Lauriam, and Skuld.
On the other hand, YX was initially only interested in Ven because he’s in his dreams. They start hanging out after Ven’s training, (which MX allows since, well, it’s himself! What’s the worst that could happen?) and YX asks Ven questions about Daybreak Town, the other leaders, etc.
I regret not actually writing out more of these conversations, because I imagine they were pretty cute. For example: Ven probably showed him some of his medals, and YX gave him some cards in return!
Here’s another scene that never made it into the story (because I decided that YX should keep his dreams a secret): Ven asks YX why he wants to spend time with him of all people. Well, the real reason is because he’s just as lonely as Ven is. But he’d never confess that, so he responds: “I wanted to figure out how you learned to glow.” This makes Ven laugh, but then he admits he doesn’t know how he did it, he just decided that despite all the chaos going on, he wanted to help his friends.
The story picks up again when YX comes to visit Ven, but he’s been injured and is clearly upset. YX presses and eventually figures out that it wasn’t an injury caused by the Heartless, but by his future self. He heals him, but wonders why MX didn’t. I think until this point he was blinded to anything off about the situation because of Ven’s enthusiasm over having someone to talk to, and his own curiosity. But now the reality of it all is falling into place, and just like Ven says, he really doesn’t know what MX is like.
The first chapter ends with them watching the stars and embracing for the first time. This forces YX to sense the loneliness and heartbreak in Ven’s heart, which he now understands is his own fault. I did like this ending… but I couldn’t get the ideas for other chapters out of my head, and I ended up writing two more!
In the next chapter, Ven is being pressured to use the power of darkness more and more during training. He worries that if he does, Darkness will take over again. Strelitzia isn’t ever mentioned by name, but Ven is thinking of her. Ven and Chirithy try to think of a way to run away, but don’t fully understand that the worlds have split apart, so their gates just lead to other parts of the Keyblade Graveyard. Eventually Ven realizes that YX must know how to do it, because he’s a Keyblade wielder from this time. (Well, he thinks so, anyway.) Ven plans that the next time YX comes to visit, they can ask him for help. (Because friends help each other in chaotic, scary situations, right?)
Ven asks: “Hermod—take me with you!” (Which is actually a very subtle nod to his conversation with Terra in Radiant Garden!) But YX refuses, since he really can’t take Ven to the past. Alternatively, he offers to help Ven use the power of darkness. Needless to say, that doesn’t go over well. Ven runs off, and YX decides to ask MX the real reason behind Ven’s training.
The big confrontation happens, and YX learns that Ven is a potential vessel, and key to rebuilding the World. Furious at MX for betraying Ven, YX tries to fight him, but is caught off guard by seeing the Gazing Eye Keyblade (which he doesn’t have yet). He is forced to return to the past, and will not return until after Ven’s heart has been fractured. It’s only loosely implied, but after this he’s probably possessed or gives in to darkness, which changes his eye color.
The second chapter ends with Ven thanking Chirithy for being the only one to help him, unknowing that YX actually did try to defend him. Chirithy asks what he’ll do the next time he’s supposed to use the darkness, to which Ven responds: “Everything’s going to be all right.” Hopefully it makes sense that the flashback in BbS is meant to be the following day!
I liked this ending TOO! But. I had more ideas. So here’s ch. 3.
Well, I kicked YX out in the last chapter, but then I wanted to write more of that scene where they embrace, so I jumped back to the end of chapter 1. (KH-typical time skips. My fics have plenty of those!)
YX talks about his childhood and friends from DR in an attempt to console Ven, but worries that he’s just made things worse by telling him they died. But Ven actually is comforted, realizing that they both lost their friends, yet made new friends by finding each other. YX can’t see their situation that way though, and comes to the conclusion that it’s not worth making new friends when things are bound to change and they’ll eventually be lost.
The fic really, actually ends with the Mysterious Figure fight in BbS. I realized how cool it would be to see them fight after all they went through in the first chapters, and hey! It was already in the game!
So, it’s four years later. Ven goes back to the Land of Departure to try to stop Terra and Eraqus from fighting, but it’s too late. YX is also there because he wanted to witness himself killing Eraqus. He decides to fight Ven, both to test him as Eraqus’ student, and because they were friends. He can’t use his DR Keyblade anymore because of how much his heart has changed, so he fights with the Ethereal Blades. The fight ends, leaving Ven confused as to who the figure was, if not someone else after the χ-Blade. But regardless, he still needs to find Terra, and there’s only one other place he could be. The place where the story began… The Keyblade Graveyard.
So there it is! The Badlands, my beloved; born of my UX/DR/BbS obsession. (Not to mention my love for the DR secret ending. So many of my fics are about Xeha meeting the friends he wished for…)
My other regret is that Ven never learned who ‘Hermod’ really was… Usually with stories built around a lie, there’s a big reveal where the truth comes out! But I don’t know… how do you think Ven would have responded to learning that his friend was actually a young Master Xehanort?
#Thank you Cori!!#Sorry it got so long! I didn’t mean to summarize the whole story but I totally did haha#long post#The Badlands

Future - Visual Design & Content Writing
The Future of Graphic Design & Content Writing.
Adapt or Get Left Behind!
The creative industry is evolving faster than ever, driven by AI, automation, and shifting market demands. While some fear the rise of AI tools like Midjourney, ChatGPT, and Canva AI, the truth is: that these changes aren’t replacing us—they’re redefining our roles.
🚀 Future of Graphic Design 🔹 AI & Automation – Routine design work is becoming automated, but strategic, high-impact design remains in human hands. 🔹 UX/UI Dominance – Digital experiences are booming. Learning UX/UI (Figma, Webflow) is a smart move. 🔹 Motion & 3D Design – Video, AR/VR, and immersive content are driving demand for motion graphics and 3D skills. 🔹 Branding & Strategy – Brands need human creativity to craft meaningful identities. Designers who master storytelling and brand psychology will thrive. 🔹 Freelancing & Specialization – Niche expertise (gaming, NFTs, data visualization) can set you apart.
💡 How to Stay Ahead? ✅ Learn UX/UI & interaction design. ✅ Master motion graphics & 3D software. ✅ Use AI as a tool, not a replacement. ✅ Focus on strategy & storytelling, not just execution. ✅ Explore AR/VR design for future-proofing.
✍️ Future of Content Writing 🔹 AI-Generated Content – AI can create drafts, but human creativity brings emotion and brand voice. 🔹 SEO & Strategy – Writing alone isn’t enough; understanding SEO and analytics is crucial. 🔹 Video & Interactive Content – Blogs are shifting to YouTube scripts, TikTok content, and podcasts. 🔹 Short-Form Writing – Microcontent (Reels, X posts) requires concise, impactful storytelling. 🔹 Technical & Niche Writing – AI struggles with deep expertise, making specialized writing (finance, health, B2B) highly valuable.
💡 How to Future-Proof as a Writer? ✅ Learn SEO, analytics & content strategy. ✅ Explore video scriptwriting & brand storytelling. ✅ Use AI to streamline workflows, not replace originality. ✅ Consider niche writing for high-demand industries. ✅ Stay adaptable—writing formats are evolving fast!
🎯 Final Takeaway: Both fields will continue to thrive, but adaptability is non-negotiable. The creatives who succeed won’t resist AI; they’ll learn how to work with it. The future belongs to those who master strategy, human emotion, and innovation—areas where AI still falls short.
💬 What’s your take? Are you a designer, a writer, or a hybrid creative? How are you preparing for the future? Let’s discuss it! 👇

5 Advanced SEO Strategies for Rankings by a Top SEO Company in Ahmedabad
Introduction
SEO has evolved far beyond simple keyword stuffing and backlinking. In 2024, search engines prioritize user experience, search intent, and AI-driven algorithms to rank websites. If your strategy still relies on outdated techniques, you risk losing visibility. Whether you're an SEO company in Ahmedabad or providing SEO services in India, mastering advanced strategies is crucial.
Google’s search algorithm updates, such as RankBrain, BERT, and MUM, have shifted the focus toward understanding user intent and behavior rather than just matching keywords. This means that businesses, from top SEO companies in India to local firms, must adopt more sophisticated tactics to remain competitive. To stand out as the best SEO company in Ahmedabad, businesses must embrace the latest innovations in search engine optimization. SEO services in India have also become increasingly specialized to cater to different industry needs and audience preferences.
Why Basic SEO Isn’t Enough Anymore
User Intent Is the New Keyword Game – Search engines prioritize content that aligns with search intent rather than just keyword density. Partnering with the best blog writers in India ensures that your content is not only keyword-optimized but also tailored to meet user expectations, answering queries comprehensively. High-quality, intent-driven content improves engagement, reduces bounce rates, and strengthens your site's credibility in search rankings.
AI & Automation Are Changing SEO – Google’s AI-driven updates require more contextually rich and human-like content.
Technical SEO Is Crucial – With Google’s Core Web Vitals update, site speed, mobile optimization, and UX play a bigger role.
E-A-T (Expertise, Authority, Trustworthiness) Matters – Websites must demonstrate credibility to rank higher.
This guide will explore advanced SEO strategies, including search intent mastery, content clustering, AI integration, technical SEO, and modern link-building techniques. By the end, you'll have actionable insights to help your SEO agency in Ahmedabad dominate search rankings. Companies offering SEO services in India must continuously refine their techniques to maintain high rankings. Whether you're an established player or a new entrant, positioning yourself as the best SEO company in Ahmedabad will require ongoing optimization.
Effective SEO Strategies Implemented by Top SEO Agencies in Ahmedabad
1. Mastering Search Intent & User Behavior
Search intent is the driving force behind modern SEO. Google’s algorithms, especially RankBrain and MUM, analyze user behavior to deliver the most relevant results. Simply targeting keywords like SEO company in Ahmedabad won’t cut it unless the content satisfies user queries. SEO services in India must evolve to match the latest search trends, ensuring users receive the best possible answers to their queries.
Breaking Down Search Intent
Search intent is categorized into four types:
Informational – Users looking for knowledge (e.g., "How does SEO work?")
Navigational – Users searching for specific websites (e.g., "Google Analytics login")
Transactional – Users ready to take action (e.g., "Hire the top SEO company in Ahmedabad")
Commercial Investigation – Users comparing options (e.g., "Best SEO services in India vs. in-house SEO")
How to Optimize for Search Intent:
SERP Analysis: Check "People Also Ask," featured snippets, and related searches.
Content Formatting: Optimize headers, bulleted lists, and FAQs for quick information retrieval.
Improve Engagement: Use compelling CTAs, multimedia, and interactive elements to keep visitors engaged. Well-crafted content by blog writers in India can seamlessly integrate these elements, making articles more informative and visually appealing. Engaging content not only retains visitors but also encourages social sharing and higher dwell time, boosting SEO performance.
By prioritizing search intent, an SEO agency in Ahmedabad can provide value-driven content rather than just keyword-stuffed pages, boosting rankings and engagement. Companies that invest in SEO services in India must focus on creating high-quality, intent-driven content to maximize visibility.
2. Topic Clusters & Content Hubs for SEO Authority
Search engines no longer rank pages based solely on individual keywords. Instead, they assess topical relevance across an entire website. A structured content strategy can position a top SEO company in Ahmedabad as an authority in its niche.
The Power of Content Clusters
Content clusters involve:
Pillar Pages: Comprehensive guides on broad topics (e.g., "Advanced SEO Strategies").
Supporting Articles: Blogs addressing subtopics, interlinked with the pillar page, strengthen the overall content strategy. The best blog writers in India craft in-depth, well-researched articles that provide valuable insights while maintaining a seamless connection to the main topic. This structured approach enhances site authority and improves search engine rankings.
Strategic Internal Linking: Strengthens authority and improves site structure.
For example, an SEO agency in Ahmedabad can create a pillar page on "SEO Trends 2024" and support it with articles on AI in SEO, content personalization, and voice search optimization. Collaborating with blog writers in India, businesses can ensure these supporting articles are well-researched, engaging, and optimized for search intent. This strategy helps search engines understand the site’s authority and boosts rankings.
Case Study: Topic Clustering in Action
A company offering SEO services in India implemented a content hub strategy and saw:
75% increase in organic traffic
40% more time spent on the website
Higher rankings for competitive keywords
This proves that structured content enhances site credibility and user engagement. Being the best SEO company in Ahmedabad requires a robust content marketing strategy that aligns with the latest industry trends.
3. AI & Machine Learning in SEO
AI-powered search updates require smarter content strategies. Tools like Google BERT, MUM, and RankBrain are reshaping SEO by prioritizing natural language and user-centric content.
Leverage AI for SEO:
AI Content Optimization: Tools like Surfer SEO and Clearscope help fine-tune content for relevance.
Predictive Analytics: Use machine learning tools to analyze user patterns and adjust content strategy.
Conversational Search Marketing Optimization: Optimize for voice search and long-tail conversational queries.
An SEO company in Ahmedabad that leverages AI-driven insights can improve personalization, enhance engagement, and drive more organic traffic. Implementing SEO services in India powered by AI will give companies a competitive advantage in search rankings.
4. Advanced Technical SEO & Core Web Vitals
You may have the blog writers in India to create insightful blogs; however, technical SEO plays a crucial role in site performance. A professional SEO company in Ahmedabad ensures that websites are optimized for Core Web Vitals, improving factors like loading speed and mobile responsiveness. By addressing technical aspects such as structured data, crawlability, and page experience, businesses can enhance their search rankings and user engagement.
Optimizing Technical SEO:
Improve Page Speed: Compress images, enable browser caching, and use a CDN.
Mobile-First Indexing: Ensure mobile-friendly designs for better usability.
Structured Data Implementation: Use schema markup for rich snippets in search results.
JavaScript SEO: Ensure proper rendering of dynamic elements to avoid indexing issues.
Companies offering SEO services in India must continually audit and refine their website infrastructure to ensure search engines can efficiently crawl and rank their content. If you aim to be the best SEO company in Ahmedabad, technical SEO should be a core priority.
5. Link Building & Digital PR for Higher Authority
High-quality backlinks remain a cornerstone of SEO. However, modern link-building goes beyond guest posts and directory submissions.
Effective Link-Building Strategies:
Digital PR: Get featured in authoritative publications through expert contributions.
Broken Link Building: Find broken links on relevant websites and offer your content as a replacement.
Unlinked Brand Mentions: Reach out to websites that mention your brand but haven’t linked to your site.
An SEO agency in Ahmedabad leveraging these techniques can build a strong backlink profile, improving domain authority and search rankings. SEO services in India that incorporate digital PR into their link-building strategies achieve long-term results.
Conclusion
Advanced SEO is an ongoing process, not a one-time effort. Businesses, whether a top SEO company in Ahmedabad or a budding startup, must embrace search intent, AI-driven insights, technical SEO, and authoritative link-building to stay competitive.
A professional SEO company in Ahmedabad understands the importance of data-driven strategies and customized solutions for different industries. From on-page enhancements to high-quality content creation, these experts ensure your brand stays visible in an ever-evolving digital landscape. Partnering with the right SEO company in Ahmedabad can help businesses unlock new growth opportunities and maximize their online presence.
SEO in 2024 is not about quick fixes but about long-term strategy and continuous optimization. Looking Ahead: The Future of ChatGPT Apps
1. Understanding ChatGPT and Its Capabilities
Before diving into app development, it's essential to understand the underlying power of ChatGPT. At its core, ChatGPT is a conversational model based on OpenAI’s GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) architecture. It has been trained on vast datasets from books, websites, and other forms of written content, enabling it to generate human-like responses across a variety of topics.
Key Capabilities:
Natural Language Understanding: ChatGPT excels at understanding the context of conversations, making it ideal for building dynamic and context-aware chatbots.
Content Generation: From answering questions and generating summaries to writing essays, code, or even poetry, ChatGPT can create content on demand.
Personalization: With fine-tuning and training on specific data, you can customize ChatGPT to address niche industries or domains, such as finance, healthcare, or customer service.
Multilingual Support: ChatGPT can understand and respond in multiple languages, making it perfect for global applications.
By integrating ChatGPT into your app, you gain access to these powerful capabilities, enabling you to create rich and responsive interactions with users.
2. Identifying the Purpose of Your ChatGPT App
The first step in developing a ChatGPT app is clearly defining its purpose. The goal is to pinpoint the problem you're trying to solve or the service you're offering, and then tailor the app’s features to meet those needs. Here are some questions to consider during this phase:
What is the primary use case? Whether it’s for customer service, education, entertainment, or task automation, the purpose will guide the app’s features and design.
Who is the target audience? Understanding who will use the app (e.g., businesses, students, or general consumers) will help shape its tone and functionality.
What functionality should the app have? You may want to include features like real-time chat, voice interaction, or integrations with other apps (e.g., calendar, email, etc.).
Examples of ChatGPT App Use Cases:
Customer Support Chatbots: Automate responses to customer inquiries, providing 24/7 service.
Virtual Assistants: Help users manage tasks such as scheduling, reminders, and document organization.
Language Learning Apps: Offer interactive conversation practice for language learners.
Creative Tools: Provide content creation features for writers, marketers, or bloggers.
Clarifying the app’s purpose at the outset ensures a clear vision, making the development process more straightforward and efficient.
3. Choosing the Right Tech Stack
Selecting the right technology stack is crucial to building a high-performance and scalable ChatGPT app. The tech stack should be chosen based on your app’s needs and the platforms it will support (iOS, Android, or web). Below are the key components of your tech stack:
Frontend (User Interface):
Web Development: For a web app, you can use modern JavaScript frameworks like React.js or Vue.js to create dynamic, interactive user interfaces.
Mobile Development: For mobile apps, React Native or Flutter can be used to build cross-platform apps. For native apps, use Swift for iOS and Kotlin/Java for Android.
Voice Integration: If your app requires voice input, integrate APIs like Google Speech-to-Text or Speech SDK from Microsoft Azure to allow users to interact with the app via voice.
Backend (Server-side):
Node.js: A popular choice for backend development due to its non-blocking I/O model, which makes it ideal for handling real-time interactions.
Python: A great choice for API integration and processing, especially when working with AI models like ChatGPT.
Serverless Architecture: For scalability, consider serverless computing platforms like AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, or Azure Functions.
Database: Use SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL) for structured data or NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) for more flexible data storage.
Third-Party APIs:
OpenAI API: The core API for accessing ChatGPT functionalities, including generating responses, setting conversation contexts, and more.
Authentication: Use services like OAuth or Firebase Authentication to manage user authentication securely.
4. Integrating ChatGPT into Your App
Integrating ChatGPT into your app involves connecting your app to OpenAI’s API and enabling real-time interactions with the model. Here are the basic steps for integrating the ChatGPT API:
Sign Up for OpenAI: Create an account on the OpenAI platform and obtain an API key to authenticate your app with OpenAI’s servers.
Install OpenAI SDK: For Python, you can install the SDK by running:bashCopyEditpip install openai
Make API Calls: To send messages to ChatGPT and retrieve responses, you’ll use the openai.Completion.create() method. Here’s an example in Python:pythonCopyEditimport openai openai.api_key = 'your-api-key' response = openai.Completion.create( engine="text-davinci-003", prompt="What are the benefits of AI in healthcare?", max_tokens=100 ) print(response.choices[0].text.strip())
Customizing the Model: Fine-tune ChatGPT’s responses by adjusting parameters like temperature (controls creativity) and max_tokens (sets response length).
5. Designing an Engaging User Interface (UI) and Experience (UX)
To create an app that users love, the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) must be intuitive, engaging, and easy to navigate. Here are some design best practices for building a seamless experience:
Conversational Flow: Display messages in a chat interface, ensuring that the conversation flows naturally. Use speech bubbles or cards to differentiate between the AI’s responses and user input.
Personalization: Offer users the ability to personalize their experience. This could include choosing a preferred language, adjusting the tone of the responses, or selecting the frequency of interaction.
Speed and Responsiveness: Ensure the app responds in real-time, with quick load times and minimal lag. Consider implementing caching or pre-generating responses for commonly asked questions.
Minimalist Design: Keep the interface simple and distraction-free. Too many buttons or complicated navigation can overwhelm users and detract from the experience.
6. Optimizing for Performance and Scalability
As your app grows, it will need to handle more users and larger amounts of data. To ensure your app performs well under stress, consider the following optimizations:
Load Balancing: Distribute traffic across multiple servers to prevent overloading any single server, ensuring smooth performance even during peak traffic.
Caching: Use caching for frequently asked questions or common queries to reduce the load on your servers and speed up response times.
Database Optimization: Use optimized database queries and indexes to improve performance, especially when dealing with large datasets.
7. Security and Data Privacy Considerations
Given the sensitive nature of AI conversations, securing your app is critical. Here are some security measures to take into account:
API Key Management: Securely store API keys and never expose them on the client side or in public repositories.
Data Encryption: Use HTTPS for secure communication between the app and the server, and encrypt sensitive data both in transit and at rest.
User Authentication: Implement secure user authentication, such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), to protect user accounts.
Compliance: Ensure your app complies with data privacy regulations, such as GDPR or CCPA, especially if you're handling sensitive or personal data.
8. Testing and Quality Assurance
Thorough testing is essential for delivering a reliable and bug-free ChatGPT app. Focus on these key areas:
Unit Testing: Test individual components of the app to ensure they function as expected.
Integration Testing: Ensure that the app integrates smoothly with OpenAI’s API and other external services.
User Testing: Conduct usability testing to identify and fix any potential UX issues.
Load Testing: Simulate high traffic to test how your app performs under stress and to identify any bottlenecks.
9. Deployment and Ongoing Maintenance
Once your app is built and thoroughly tested, it’s time to deploy it. Consider using cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure for hosting. Additionally, ensure regular maintenance through the following steps:
Regular Updates: Update the app regularly to improve performance, add new features, and address security vulnerabilities.
User Feedback: Continuously gather feedback from users to refine the app and enhance the user experience.
10. Looking Ahead: The Future of ChatGPT Apps
As AI technology continues to evolve, the possibilities for ChatGPT apps are expanding. Here are a few trends to watch:
AI-Powered Voice Assistants: Integrating ChatGPT with voice technology could lead to more seamless, hands-free experiences.
Advanced Personalization: With more sophisticated machine learning, future ChatGPT apps may offer highly personalized experiences based on user behavior and preferences.
AI Collaboration: ChatGPT may be used for collaborative workspaces, where teams interact with AI to generate ideas, answer questions, and solve problems in real-time.
Conclusion
Developing a ChatGPT app that delivers a seamless user experience requires a deep understanding of the technology, a clear purpose, and a commitment to creating an intuitive, high-performance product. By following the steps outlined in this guide and applying best practices in app development, you can unlock the full potential of ChatGPT and create an app that engages, informs, and delights users. As AI technology continues to evolve, the opportunities for building cutting-edge applications are endless, so stay ahead of the curve and continue exploring new ways to leverage this powerful tool.

Choosing the Right SEO Company in Delhi: Key Trends and Considerations
An effective SEO strategy is crucial for any business looking to enhance its online presence. If you’re based near Delhi and searching for an SEO company that can help you stand out in a competitive market, understanding the key trends and considerations will guide you in making the right choice.
Why SEO Matters for Local Businesses
For businesses in Delhi, having a solid local SEO strategy isn’t just an option—it’s essential. With so many people using search engines to find local services and products, you need to ensure that your business is visible in local search results. Effective local SEO helps drive targeted traffic to your website, making it easier for potential customers in your area to find you and engage with your services.
Key Trends Shaping SEO
Voice Search Optimization: As smart speakers and voice assistants become more common, optimizing for voice search is becoming increasingly important. This means focusing on natural, conversational queries and creating content that straightforwardly answers common questions.
Mobile-First Indexing: Google now prioritizes the mobile version of your website for ranking and indexing. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re likely missing out on a significant amount of traffic. Ensuring a smooth, responsive mobile experience is key to maintaining high search rankings.
User Experience (UX) and Core Web Vitals: User experience is a major factor in SEO. Google’s Core Web Vitals measure how quickly your site loads, how interactive it is, and how stable its content is during loading. Improving these metrics can make your site more enjoyable for users and boost your search rankings.
Content Quality and Relevance: High-quality, relevant content remains at the heart of SEO. It’s not just about including keywords but creating valuable content that addresses your audience’s needs and interests. Good content can drive traffic, engage users, and encourage them to take action.
Local SEO and Google My Business: For local businesses, optimizing your Google My Business (GMB) listing is vital. Accurate business information, positive reviews, and engaging posts on your GMB profile can greatly impact your visibility in local searches.
SEO Company Near Delhi
Experience and Expertise: Choose an SEO company with a solid track record and deep experience. An experienced team will be well-versed in the latest SEO techniques and have a history of successful projects.
Comprehensive Services: SEO involves various components, from keyword research to on-page and off-page optimization. Look for a company that offers a full range of services to cover all aspects of your SEO strategy.
Transparent Reporting: A good SEO company will provide clear, regular reports on your campaign’s progress. Transparency helps you understand the impact of their work and ensures you’re always in the loop.
Custom Strategies: Avoid companies that offer one-size-fits-all packages. Your business is unique, and your SEO strategy should be tailored to your specific goals and challenges.
Client Testimonials and Case Studies: Check for testimonials and case studies to gauge a company’s reputation and effectiveness. Positive feedback and real-life examples can give you confidence in your ability to deliver results.
Ethical Practices: Ensure the company follows ethical SEO practices and adheres to search engine guidelines. Avoid those using shortcuts or black-hat techniques that could harm your site’s long-term success.

SEO Best Practices for 2024: Staying Ahead of Google Algorithm Updates
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is still a vital component of digital marketing, continually evolving in response to Google's periodic algorithm modifications. As we approach 2024, businesses must stay up to date on the latest SEO best practices in order to preserve or improve their search ranks. This article discusses critical tactics for staying ahead of Google's adjustments and ensuring your content continues to rank well in search engine results.
1. Concentrate on User Experience (UX)
In 2024, user experience (UX) is more important than ever in SEO. Google's algorithms are progressively prioritizing websites that provide seamless, intuitive experiences. Core Web Vitals, which were established in 2020, continue to play an important part in rankings. These metrics assess page loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability. Websites that perform well in these areas are more likely to rank higher.
Best Practice: Conduct regular UX audits for your website by analyzing Core Web Vitals scores with tools such as Google PageSpeed Insights. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly, as mobile devices account for a large amount of web traffic. To improve the overall user experience, simplify navigation, reduce load times, and minimize intrusive pop-ups.
2. Prioritize quality content.
Content remains king in the world of SEO. However, the emphasis has shifted towards quality over quantity. Google's algorithms are getting better at analyzing content context and relevance. In 2024, generating in-depth, well-researched, and creative content that matches the needs of your audience is critical.
Best Practice: Create a content strategy that prioritizes high-quality articles, blog posts, and multimedia content. Use keyword research to uncover themes that are relevant to your audience, but avoid keyword stuffing. Instead, naturally include keywords into your text while focussing on readability and value.
3. Optimize for E-A-T (expertise, authority, and trustworthiness).
Google's E-A-T principles continue to influence how material is judged. In 2024, establishing competence, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness is vital, particularly in industries such as healthcare, banking, and law where accurate information is essential.
Best Practice: Promote your knowledge by creating material written by certified people. Link to reliable sources and keep your content up to date with the most recent information. Include author bios that showcase the qualifications and experience of your content writers. Secure your website with HTTPS to get trust from both users and search engines.
4. Embrace Voice Search Optimisation
With the growing popularity of smart speakers and voice assistants, voice search is becoming an important part of SEO. In 2024, optimizing your content for voice search may give you an advantage in ranking for spoken requests.
Best Practice: employ long-tail keywords and natural language phrases that people are likely to employ in voice searches. Create brief, direct responses to typical industry enquiries to enhance your chances of appearing in voice search results and Google's featured snippets.
5. Apply AI and Machine Learning
AI and machine learning are increasingly influencing how Google's algorithms rank content. Understanding how these technologies affect SEO might help you remain ahead of the competition.
Best Practice: Use AI tools to analyze user behavior, predict trends, and personalize information. AI-powered SEO systems, for example, can assist you in more efficiently optimizing content by offering insights into keyword performance, content gaps, and link-building chances. In addition, apply AI to improve content generation, such as creating topic ideas or optimizing headlines.
6. Optimize for Visual and Video Content
Visual and video content are becoming increasingly important in SEO. Google is increasingly prioritizing rich material, and platforms like YouTube are critical to search tactics. In 2024, optimizing your graphic and video content can considerably help your SEO efforts.
Best Practice: To speed up load times, optimize photos using alt text, compression, and descriptive file names. Make sure your video footage is hosted on websites such as YouTube and has transcripts, pertinent tags, and thorough descriptions attached to it. To improve the way movies appear in search results, think about adding schema markup to them.
7. Strengthen Local Search Engine Optimisation
Businesses that depend on local clients must invest in local SEO. Businesses must optimize their web presence for local searches since Google is placing an increasing amount of focus on local search results.
Best Practice: Make sure all of the information on your Google Business Profile—including your company name, address, phone number, and hours of operation—is correct and completely optimized. Request favorable evaluations from pleased clients, and keep your profile up to date with fresh images and content. Additionally, use local keywords to optimize the content on your website and provide audience-focused localized material.
8. Get Ready for Upcoming Algorithm Changes
Google adjusts its algorithm frequently, which may have an effect on search ranks. In order to continue to be successful with SEO in 2024, you must remain knowledgeable and flexible.
Best Practice: Stay up to date on Google's latest updates by subscribing to emails, attending webinars, and following industry blogs. Make sure your website complies with the most recent SEO guidelines by doing regular audits. Determine what needs to be improved and modify your approach if an update has a negative impact on your rankings.
In conclusion
In 2024, SEO will still be changing, therefore being proactive and flexible will be necessary to keep up with Google's algorithm changes. You may improve your website's visibility and keep high search rankings by concentrating on user experience, high-quality content, E-A-T, and cutting-edge technologies like voice search and artificial intelligence. To maintain long-term success in the dynamic digital market, regularly examine your SEO approach, adopt new technology, and keep up with industry developments.

Actually this highlights some of the major misunderstandings of a lot of writing advice.
Reading is an experience for the audience and writing a story well is UX (User Experience) Design for that audience.
Take the 1st post OP makes:
The writing advice emphasizes removing descriptive bloat (so it reads faster), making characters someone we empathize with and unique.
The “empathize” advice is just garbage writing advice. Is Walter White from Breaking Bad a guy we really empathize with a lot? No. People love that show no matter how much that character becomes criminal and cruel to those around him because we want to know his story. Our leading women, enbies and men needn’t be relatable, let alone likeable.
Making characters “interesting and different”. Well. Everyone likes reading interesting things. But OP nicely points out that 19th century literature just focused more on making interesting things happen rather than making the people it happened to interesting. Is that a flaw? No.
The same applies to “ten pages of description about the place I’m in”. Modern publishers don’t like that and will usually ask authors to cut it out. But your setting and your locations can be characters of their own or powerful tools to set a mood and get us into the mindset of characters or into the experience of witnessing the events of the story. So why not? Why not 10 pages of description. Could even sound dry and boring if that’s the effect you want it to have on the reader! Sure!
Relatable and Likeable Characters:
One of the movies that tries too hard to make its character likeable and relatable is Butterfly Effect (2004).
In one scene, a bully steals the protagonists dog (the audience was not even aware he had a dog) and proceeds to burn the pet to death.
What does this scene achieve? It makes the bully hate-able. What a cruel person to burn an innocent animal? But it doesn’t get us to understand what the dog meant to the main character, because the dog literally appears out of thin air.
I’m pretty sure the writers thought that if bad things happen to the main character, the main character will become likeable. But the real trick for writers to master is for the character to not be so distant. For small things to happen (during the exposition phase) that make the character click for people. Like when Luke Skywalker doesn’t want to work another year moisture farming and wants to be a pilot. No one in the audience knows how to moisture farm, but we understand having big dreams of adventure and being stuck doing work instead.
A non-relatable character like the hero in Butterfly Effect is so distant that I, the viewer, could not care less about his final fate. I was glad the movie was over and regretted my hopes for it.
Character Arcs:
You can just substitute a character arc for an audience arc. You know that, right?
Ok, that might not make sense to anyone. Let me explain.
Modern writing advice often forgets the reading experience. A lot of writing advice uses phrases like “show, don’t tell“ devoid of their original context. This leads to writers learning superstitious instructions and applying these arcane superstitions to their writing.
For example, in the tv show “Constantine”, one of the first couple of episodes has Constantine “go through a character arc” by making a big deal out of how before he went on his last adventure he was a different man. That’s not a character arc.
A character arc is when you write about a war and after the war is over you can tell, just by the actions and emotions and relationships and thoughts of the characters that the war has impacted and changed them.
A character arc is when you write about whatever your book or chapter or short story is about and that thing is impactful on the character.
But it is just as good writing to have the events not impact the character at all and show that your character was resilient or right all along. That’s how Hunger Games, Paddington and Happy Go Lucky work. Then your job as a writer is to have other characters (one side character, some or even all of your side characters) undergo a realization that the main character is “an immovable object in the face of an unstoppable force” or something similar. This doesn’t have to be “awe in the face of Katniss Everdeen and Paddington Bear”. It can also be the convicts who change their attitude towards life after witnessing Paddington’s mantra “if you’re kind and polite, the world will be right”. Maybe there are even ways to write a story without changing any of the characters, because:
This is called an audience arc. You are not writing to impact your character, you are writing to impact your audience.
If the lesson learned is “the main character is a messed up freak, sayonara”, then that’s a perfectly legit audience arc!
A character without an arc like Constantine in Constantine the tv series is extremely stale, like some classic literature characters. That’s perfectly fine, but I personally found the tv show to be repetitive and uninspired (and racist, but that’s on another note). The events didn’t affect the characters, so it felt very uninvolved. I stopped watching after 3 or 4 episodes.
Bottom Line:
Correct: “You can write your story however you want and (good) writing advice is there to help you do that.”
False: “Writing advice is all useless and anything written is a good story”.
Any kind of story can be written well. But you cannot tell “the one you want to tell how you want to tell it” without writing badly. You are free to write badly, but you pay the price. If you ditch relatable characters and their troubles in life all come up spontaneously without your audience getting a feel for the person OR if you ditch character and audience arcs and the events never seem to change your characters, you pay the price.
This is what the writer’s of Game of Thrones did. When Hodor died, they made the event extremely spectacular and meaningful, but then it doesn’t impact Bran or Meera, it’s like they just move on and forget about Hodor and about what Bran did. That is what a lack of character arcs looks like: something big happens and no one seems to be affected for more than the moment in which it happens. I could go on and explain to you the failings of season 8 but let’s leave it at that. You can’t just write *anything* and expect your readers to be shaken up and affected.
Every 21st century piece of writing advice: Make us CARE about the character from page 1! Make us empathize with them! Make them interesting and different but still relatable and likable!
Every piece of classic literature: Hi. It's me. The bland everyman whose only purpose is to tell you this story. I have no actual personality. Here's the story of the time I encountered the worst people I ever met in my life. But first, ten pages of description about the place in which I met them.
