You yawned, looking down at the time on your laptop and realizing it was well past 3 am, Pete’s usual arrival time. You frowned, checking your phone to see if he had texted you that rehearsals were running late.

And just as your fingers touched the plastic phone case, the door to Pete’s apartment-basement opened, revealing the man himself. He looked exhausted, even for himself. The bags under his eyes sunk deeper than usual and his slouch was worse than ever.

He found you sitting up, blanket over your lower half, laptop in lap, and he smiled lazily. He slumped over to the foot of the bed and fell face forward into the mattress. You giggled as his face landed next to your waistline, moving your laptop to the small table besides you as Pete kicked his shoes off. You reached and pulled Pete by his forearms to lay his head in your lap, the man making no effort to help you except flipping over to look at you.

You ran your fingers through his hair, smiling down at him. “Hi baby,” You spoke softly as he snuggled further into your body. “How was work?”

Pete hummed, eyes closing at the feeling of your gentle fingers combing through his locks. “Long. Lorne was in a bad mood and the host made us rehearse everything like 3 times.”

You frowned, “I’m sorry.” You shifted so your back was resting against the headboard and pulled Pete so he was cuddled into your chest, back against your front. You wrapped your arms around his waist, rubbing his stomach with your thumb.

Pete shrugged, hands moving to sit on top of yours. “It’s not your fault, just sucked.” You nodded, leaning down to press a kiss against the side of his head. “What did you do all day?” He asked, looking up at you.

“Zoom meetings with clients mostly, nothing too interesting. I saw this really cute puppy on my walk today, though!” You reached over and grabbed your phone, finding the picture you had taken and showing it to him. “Highlight of my day until you came home.”

He smiled, taking the phone from your hands, and gazing at the picture. “Almost as cute as you.” He mumbled, making you giggle. You pressed another kiss to the side of his head, and then another, and then a few more in quick succession, making him laugh.

You loved to hear him laugh, especially on days like these where he was feeling down. “Did you get a chance to eat?” You asked quietly after a few moments of silence.

“No.” He followed his statement with a groan, “I worked through dinner and wanted to see you as soon as possible so I didn’t stop.”

You nodded with a smile on your face, touched that he was so eager to come home to you. “I can make you something,” you offered. He rubbed small circles to the top of your hand and let out a small hum of agreement. “What do you want?”

“Do we have stuff to make mac n cheese?” He asked.

You let out a small giggle at the childlike sound of his request, “I can check. You just want mac n cheese?”

“I have been craving mac n cheese for like three days.” You laughed at his confession, moving your arms, and trying to get out from under him.

He refused to let you leave, laying over your lap completely to keep you sitting. “Pete I can’t make anything if you don’t let me stand up.”

He groaned, turning to hug your middle, his head buried in your stomach, “don’t want you to leave.”

You let out a small chuckle, running a hand through his hair, “do you wanna come cook with me?” He shook his head no. “Okay well I have to get up, so you have to let go of me.” He shook his head again. “Pete, I will drag you to the kitchen if you don’t let go.”

He laughed, looking up at you with tired eyes. “I’m like a koala bear.” You could hear in his voice just how tired he was, and you weren’t sure if he would be able to stay awake long enough to eat any food you made.

“Yes, you are, babe.” You sighed, using all your force to move your feet to dangle off the bed, Pete’s hands still around your waist. “Pete, let go.” You said, giggling lightly.

He let you go long enough for you to stand up before standing up himself and wrapping his arms around you again, this time from behind you. You sighed, leaning your head back against his chest, knowing he would make you walk in this position.

The two of you waddled to the kitchen, Pete pressing lazy kisses to your neck the entire way there. You got out the ingredients for mac n cheese, setting them out on the counter. “Is cheddar okay?” you asked, turning your neck to meet his eyes, and finding a soft smile on his face. He nodded, pressing a quick, sweet kiss to your lips.

You preheated the oven and set a pot of water on the stove to boil, Pete finally moving off of you to jump onto the counter, grabbing handfuls of cheese as you began to grate it. You gave him a joking glare, which he returned with a wide smile.

Once the water began to boil you added the macaroni, mentally making a note of what time you would need to take it off the stove. You put butter on a saucepan, letting it melt as you measured out the milk, flour, cheese, and half and half. You added the ingredients and mixed, draining the noodles after six minutes and adding the sauce.

You moved to one of the cupboards above your head, searching for a dish to put your mixture into. You could see the glass pan above you, but you knew reaching it would require you growing an extra three inches. You frowned, preparing to jump up onto the counter when you felt a hand around your waist. “imagine being short.” Pete said with a chuckle, grabbing the pan with ease.

You turned around, pouting at him as he set the glass on the counter. His arms went to rest on the counter on either side of you, leaning down to be closer to you. “You’re mean.” You said, crossing your arms.

He laughed, pressing a kiss to your lips. “And you’re adorable,” he mumbled, kissing you again. His lips moved so well with yours, fitting perfectly together. Pete deepened the kiss, making you lean backwards with a smile. He whined, trying to kiss you again.

“Food, Petey.” You said, pointing to the stove. He sighed, moving his hands to let you move back over to your spot and finish making the food. Instead of returning to his counter, he followed you, wrapping his arms around your middle from behind and resting his head on your shoulder. You continued to work despite the man weighing you down, swatting his hands away when he tried to take pieces of pasta.

You pushed him back as you opened the oven, placing the glass pan with macaroni in it and setting the microwave timer for 20 minutes. Once you were done, Pete spun you around to face him. His hands rested on your waist, and you put your own around his neck.

“Dance with me” he mumbled, forehead resting against yours.

You giggled softly, “there’s no music.”

“We don’t need music.”

Pete started swaying you both gently, slowly spinning around the room. Your eyes were on each other the whole time, nothing else mattering but each other. Despite the lack of music and the tiredness in both of your eyes, it felt magical.

You didn’t notice Pete’s mom enter the kitchen, nor did you notice the smile on her face as she took out her phone and recorded the two of you. You didn’t notice anything other than Pete.

“I love you.” You whispered; a smile spread on your face.

Pete’s lips connected with your own, the kiss slow and sweet and lazy and perfect. “I love you too” he whispered after he pulled away.

You were brought out of your fairytale when the microwave beeped, alerting you that the mac n cheese was ready. You pulled away, grabbing an oven mitt and a towel, and pulling the glass pan out of the oven. Pete noticed his mom in the kitchen doorway.

“I came to get a glass of water but I didn’t want to interrupt your moment.” She said, a fond smile on her face.

A blush rose to your cheeks as you set the pan on the towel. “Do you want any?” Pete asked motioning to the dish.

She laughed, “at 4 in the morning? I’m good. But if there’s leftovers I might take some to work tomorrow.” You nodded, mentally noting to save her a piece. “Y/N made it, right?”

You nodded with a smile, laughing when Pete let out a “what is that supposed to mean?”

“I’m gonna get to bed, have fun you two.”

“Goodnight.” You called softly as she moved to her room before moving to grab a spoon, two forks, and two bowls. Pete left to the room, turning on the TV and flipping through Netflix to find a specific movie. You put the dishes in the sink, promising yourself you’d do them the next day, and then served yourself and Pete. You wrapped the remaining food and placed it in the fridge, walking to where Pete was.

You found him on the couch, blanket sprawled over him, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World queued up to play. You sat next to him, handing him his bowl, and smiling as he instinctively leaned into you. You spent the rest of the night eating and watching comedies on Netflix until you both passed out on the couch, wrapped in each other’s arms.

SHN Interview: Charlie Bennett

Charlie Bennett is an independent musical artist from England. They write, record, and produce from their bedroom, and has gained a dedicated fanbase of listeners through social media. SHN host Claire caught up with Charlie via Zoom to discuss his career so far, his new single “Polka Dot Socks,” and what’s coming next.

CS: It’s so nice to finally sit down and chat with you. I really like your music and what you’ve been doing recently.

CB: Thank you so much.

CS: How did you get started in music, especially writing, recording, producing, releasing your own songs?

CB: My first instrument was drums, I started playing when I was 10 because there was this local drum teacher going around. Most of the ways I've learned how to play music has been by ear. I started actually writing music at 16, mostly through watching films, like Sing Street, which is about an Irish band in the 80s, and Begin Again with Mark Ruffalo. Films about music were a very big part of it, I really liked seeing the creative process.

CS: So what is your own creative process like when you're writing a song?

CB: Every single song I've written has been a personal thing. There’s always elements of my life scattered within them, “Is This Falling?” being a very good example of that. From a methodical perspective, I always start with chords first. I have loads of these little leather journals that I use and I've started a very big one recently, so I can really draw across the page which is nice, because I'm a very scruffy writer. After I have the cords, then I go to my journals and start improvising lyrics over the chords. I always find the music comes a lot more naturally first, than trying to fit lyrics around the music comes second.

CS: I’m curious as to who your musical influences are? Is there a specific band or an album that has impacted you a lot?

CB: My music tastes have changed a lot since I started writing back in 2016. I was very much into My Chemical Romance and much more rock music back then, whereas now I'd say one of the biggest artists that changed my taste in music was Rusty Clanton. His music has a lot of acoustic elements and all my music has been very acoustic based. Right now, my influences are probably beabadoobee and Oscar Lang, both artists from the UK who are doing great right now, and I admire their entire discographies. They've both gone from acoustic sounds from when they were collaborating together throughout 2018 to now where they both have full-fledged bands playing festivals. They are very big influences on me because I really admire their musical taste and the fact that they’re geographically similar to me.

CS: I definitely can see their influences in your writing. Speaking of collaborations, how did “Jam on Neptune” with tinyumbrellas come about?

CB: So tinyumbrellas and I found each other from having our music placed on the same playlist. My song “Is This Falling?” was alongside one of her songs called “Stardust.” tinyumbrellas reached out to me that they really liked my song, and then we basically hinted at the fact that we should collab in the future. About a month later during the winter lockdown in England in January [2021] we jumped on a Zoom call and it all happened in one afternoon. During that first call when we met, we wrote and started to produce the song all over Zoom. I was mixing it on my Mac, and on calls every week, we’d work on it. It wasn't until the start of April when the lockdown lifted slightly, that we were able to actually meet in person and then play the song live. It was it was a very interesting process over Zoom, and I'd really like to do that again. I think if anything good came out of a lockdown, it's been the fact that that we've found so many better ways of communicating with each other when we're not face to face.

CS: This past October you had your first show in London, how was that experience?

CB: It was really interesting. The first thing I noticed was how cool the venue was. It was in Shoreditch in London, and had all these archways and you could hear the trains going above you. It was the first time I'd really done anything on that scale, getting to experience that kind of crowd and atmosphere. My previous performances had been much more lowkey and calm, and the crowd at the London show was really hyped up. It was just really, really fun.

CS: Do you have plans for more shows in the future? Or are restrictions because of the pandemic still impeding that?

CB: I've definitely got stuff on the cards, a couple of promoters have reached out to me. But again, it's still very much up in the air. I'm applying to do some festivals, hopefully later in the year, but we'll see how that goes.

CS: I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you for those festivals.

CB: Thank you!

CS: Your most recent song, “Polka Dot Socks” is out now and it seems like your listeners really love it. What was the writing process for that song like? What kind of sparked it?

CB: It was a few months after “Jam on Neptune” had come out, and I was in a big writer's block slump. I just sat down with my guitar and decided I wasn’t going to put any pressure on myself to do anything. I’d been listening to a lot of “DIY” songs on Soundcloud at the time — I like getting inspiration from those kinds of songs more than ones that have been fully produced, they’re more useful because they’re more raw. I had some chord progression ideas in my head and I came away from that session with the line “you’ve stolen all my shoes” and then “polka dot socks” as a clothing item stuck with me, because it’s so specific. I started writing what became “Polka Dot Socks” in the summer, and then it was in the back of my mind, for about five months. In December I posted a snippet of it on TikTok, and it did really well, so that motivated me to finish it, and then within about a month I released it.

CS: I have to ask, do you own a pair of polka dot socks?

CB: I do. I do. I'm gonna make sure they don't get stolen.

CS: One last question, do you have any upcoming news you can share with SHN readers?

CB: I've been working for ages to figure out and solidify my sound, and I think I've kind of reached that point, especially with “Is This Falling?” and “Polka Dot Socks.” I feel like I’m now in my stride. I'm working on a new song at the minute that’s going to be one that you can probably shout in your car if you want to. So I think it's a nice transition. And I have a live version of “Polka Dot Socks” coming out very soon!

CS: I look forward to hearing both of those, that sounds really exciting! I want to wish you good luck on everything, and I hope no one steals your polka dot socks.

Part I – Install Soundflower Extension on Mac

Soundflower Extension is not an audio recorder. It is an extension for Mac OS. Soundflower is designed to create a virtual audio output device that can also work as an input. It changes the route of audio and that helps to record internal audio on Mac. You need to download and install the Soundflower Extension before we move towards the process of recording the internal audio.

Electro-pop trio Cannons have been making music ever since frontwoman Michelle Joy posted a Craigslist ad looking for bandmates in 2013. Luckily, soon-to-be members and friends Ryan Clapham (guitar) and Paul Davis (bass and keyboard) responded.

They've been using the years since that fated, and thankfully not missed, connection to craft a sound that is simultaneously novel and nostalgic. It’s little surprise then that Cannons' breakout song “Fire For You” exploded on the Alternative Billboard charts, climbing to the #1 position and landing them a deal with Columbia Records.

Cannons are set to hit the this road this summer, including numerous festival stops at Lollapalooza, Firefly, Outside Lands, and more. Ones To Watch got the incredible chance to speak with Michelle Joy of the group ahead of a summer to remember.

Ones To Watch: We heard you recently celebrated your birthday and got engaged?!

Michelle Joy: I know, it’s been an insane year, but all good things! It was very exciting and a dream come true. I couldn’t imagine all these great things happening to me. It’s very surreal.

You’re set to play Firefly, Lollapalooza, Life is Beautiful, and more, but the one I'm most excited for is Outside Lands, because you’re playing on Halloween, the same day as Tame Impala. I don’t know how far in advance you prepare for Halloween, but do you have a costume in mind?

I usually don’t plan far ahead. I’m more of a day- of- person, but based on the comments for the music video “Bad Dream,” I’ll be going as The Disco Dazzler! She’s a Marvel X-Men character who can convert sound into light beams. She’s just so cool!

How do you feel about playing live according to mood ring colors? Black (stressed), yellow (nervous), blue (calm), (purple) happy, or green (mixed emotions)?

Purple for sure!

Based on the lyrics of “Bad Dream,” Michelle are you always a person in the back row of shows?

I think it’s been changing. Now I’m a person who would move to the front because I want to see everything and see what they’re using. When I was in college at Florida State University, we had this place called Club Downunder. I got to see tons of shows for free! I would sit on the couch and just relax there.

Plus, Cannons is going on tour with Sir Sly and lovelytheband this fall! Are you excited?

We’re so excited to play live in like twenty-three different cities. We’ve just been playing shows on Zoom and then IG live. It’s just not the same and we miss getting out there.

In high school, you were involved with a radio station. Tell us about your experience.

That was the most fun class I took because we could program the music and my friends had radio shows. People would skip their other classes just to be in radio. We just had a blast and it was totally worth it!

Were you worried nobody would respond to the craigslist ad that originally birthed Cannons?

No, I wasn’t. I’m not sure why I posted it at that exact time, but I just wanted to make music with other people. When I posted that, I got a flood of emails. There were a lot of people that I felt I didn’t connect with. When Ryan hit me back... he listened to all the same music as I did and he liked my voice. Ryan, Paul, and I can work on a song without meeting up, which made me feel comfortable. Cannons is my first band and it’s been magical for seven years.

Where do you see Cannons a decade from now?

I always just see us on an upward path. It’s exactly what we’ve done in the beginning. Some of my biggest dreams were to play festivals and have people hear us on the radio. I’m just soaking up the moment feeling grateful.

What did you do before Cannons?

I had so many jobs before Cannons. When I moved out to Los Angeles, I worked as a barista, at a restaurant, a photographer representative, and a behavioral therapist for kids with autism.

Going back to your breakout song “Fire For You,” can you speak a bit about the duality present between the lyrics and overall mood?

The thing about that song is that it's super sexy. One thing I like to do with songs is make it upbeat with a melancholic message. They are always going to be conflicting, so it can take on many emotions.

Your music has a real Studio 54 vibe, so if you could make a ‘70s/‘80s playlist, who would be on it?

Prince, Rose Royce, Fleetwood Mac, Marvin Gaye, Motown artists, and Bee Gees!

What’s a song you wish Cannons wrote?

Prince’s “Nothing Compare 2 U.” I’ve been listening to a lot of Prince.

We heard a new album is in the works, when can we expect more new music to drop?

We’re going to be releasing new singles until November when we tour. We’re working on the album art cover now. I’m so excited to put it out!

Baby backs you against the island, “Ooh I should be running.” Raising your eyebrow, you hoist her up the island by her ass. “Ooh you know I love it,” breaths mingling, noses touching, hands roaming up her thighs. Before any actions ensue, the timer goes off. A playful tut leaves your lips as Baby hops down from the counter to extract the dish from the oven.

Holding the box of elbow macaroni in one hand, you release a big huff of air, breathless from all the constant running to-and-from the car. Baby wipes the beads of sweat forming on your forehead, taking the box gratefully with her free hand. “Thank you my loves,” she turns on her heels and begins the process.

“Salt,” she suspends her hand in the air, waiting for the seasoning. “Salt,” you repeat as your eyes scan the counter filled with the ingredients for tonight’s dish; once spotted, you grab the shaker of salt, placing it on Baby’s palm.

“Pepper.” The same process repeats. “Pepper,” you restate, before handing the pepper.

“A kiss,” a smile dancing on her lips as you hover over her petite figure to meet lips. “Kiss.”

She lays the lid on the pot and lets it cook for another minute to proceed on draining all the pasta. You stroll over and hook your phone to the speaker while casually asking for any song requests, to which she responds with Senorita. Searching through the multiple records on Spotify, you press play. As you saunter near a busy Baby, you snatch a flower from the neighboring vase, placing it in her raven locks and wrapping your arms around her waist, swaying side-to-side. A bright blush creeps up her neck as her hands diligently compose the hybrid together.

“I love it when you call me Senorita,” she sings along, “I wish I could pretend I didn't need ya~” Baby faces you, snaking her arms around your neck, her hips grinding against yours to the rhythm of the song. “But every touch is ooh-la-la-la,” harmonizing towards the end, “It's true la-la-la.

The first thought that crosses your mind is that y’all are gonna die like this, until a brilliant lightbulb, although delayed, lit up. “Shigi, brace yourself,” and before she can prepare for the unknown, your foot slams hard on the break, causing the car to screech and abruptly stop. Good thing she wore a seatbelt, that sudden action blew up the airbag and almost broke her neck. Luckily, the car stopped.

“Y/n? Are you alright?” she reaches over to the airbag that consumed you, worry written all over her features. “Oh no! Are you dead?” was the last thing she said before she was interrupted with a loud laugh from the bag. “Sho ‘ool,” your words slur together as she pries you from your predicament. You stepped out of the vehicle to dust yourself off. “Now THAT was fun!” Animated tears streamed from Tashigi’s poor pale face, “No it wasn’t.”

She brought her baby to the mechanics the following day, in hopes of finding out what’s wrong with her car. To her surprise, the car was in perfect condition, no faulty mechanics, which left Tashigi wondering what went wrong.

The next time she takes you out to drive, she wears a helmet and knee pads. “Wow you seem scared,” enthusiastically, you grip the wheel and lower your foot on the gas pedal. “Safety first!” Tashigi awkwardly laughed, trying her hardest to not offend you. The car picks up speed, and won’t stop, just like Tashigi’s rising heart rate. “Y/n, sweetie, why is the car rapidlY PICKING UP SPEED,” the urgency in her voice increases as she glances at the speedometer. 59 mph! That was too fast for the first few minutes of driving. “Break! Break!” She calls out as your hands twist with the defiant wheel. The car starts zooming, forcing Tashigi to relive her nightmare from before. “Y/N YOU KNOW HOW TO BREAKRIGHT?” the words spewing from her mouth like a rap song, until she remembers her helmet. “Duh,” you responded casually, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Really?” her eyes wide as her hands fondle the safety snap of her helmet, “which pedal is your foot on?”

“The right,” nonchalantly countered. You can hear Tashigi mentally facepalm. “Move your foot to the left,” she says with more ease, thanks to her helmet. You do as your told, and the car stops. Thankfully.

“Did I scare you?” a light lilt coated your words, making it seem like it was insincere. She nodded. “And I thought the car had problems,” her shoulders relax as she exhales a pent up breath while you laugh at her. “You’re so cute when you panic for your life,” you planted a soft kiss on her nose as she pouts in disbelief. “You drive now.”

She switches places with you and drives back home in a safe manner. Maybe there was a reason why you never drove.
