Diary OR Thoughts during covid times

Am I really publishing my diary when everyone can read it? Stupidity? Mistake? I hope no... For over a month I have not made any entries in my diary. Once again, there was no desire and strength. Today is the 24th week of my pregnancy. It seems to me that this pregnancy is better tolerated than the first one. Heartburn is a bit disturbing, but overall I feel good. From February my daughter will only be in the kindergarten for 4 days. She is smart, and I love her more and more. She has become so interesting! I will devote more time to her, otherwise, when my son is born, I may not spend much time with her. She is better at home (constant tears in the morning, "I don't want to go to the daycare"), and this will help us save money. With the payment of the car, insurance, mortgage, it is now harder to save a lot.

I wanted to enroll my daughter in group ballet classes, but they only offered online classes due to covid restrictions. What stupidity! Group ballet classes online for 3 year-old kids on Zoom! This is complete nonsense. Let's wait for better times. The dance studio has also been closed since early November. L., it turns out, came back, but he did not even offer me to meet and practise. He still does not know about my situation.

I bought tickets for my mom for almost the entire summer, but all these restrictions are very embarrassing and cost money. Prime Minister Trudeau today announced a mandatory hotel stay (about $ 2,000) for three days prior to retesting, not to mention a test 72 hours before departure. I really hope it will be canceled before she arrives.

I finally passed my fitness exams!!! I passed the theory exam at 75% of the required 80% and I was terribly upset. The exam took place online, but they record you on a camera, monitor you during the exam, check your computer, desk and walls, force you to remove your phone, so you would not be able to look for answers anywhere. I have never failed any exam in my life! And so it's a shame - I missed only 3 correct answers for "Pass". I cried a lot and walked around like a beaten one all day. I wrote to them that many questions did not relate to theory and there are no answers in the textbook, and they make money like this on purpose. I paid for the second exam, but they revised my answers, agreed with me, decided to give me the required 80% and returned the money for the retake! I saved money, but I still felt a sense of humiliation. The second group fitness exam was easier and I passed the right 80%. In the summer I will pass the CPR & FIrst Aid and apply for a certificate of a group fitness trainer with all the documents. I hope I haven't wasted my money. Now the fitness, dance and sports industry hit the bottomline: all gyms and centers are closed because of covid, and I don't even know how, where and when I can recoup this money by working as a fitness instructor. I know for sure that I don't want to continue working here as a telephone translator with a $ 18 pay and slave working conditions. I'm starting to hate this job and already counting the weeks and months until maternity leave.

Yesterday my husband and I (as an interpreter) finally went to the dentist, and we regret not having done this earlier. His teeth are in disrepair, you need to pull out molars, do a cleaning and a bunch of fillings, which turned out to be dilapidated. This will take a few appointments, and I hope to do it all before the end of our insurance, because I doubt that we will be approved later. Yesterday I went to the optometrist - a very good doctor, but my husband does not want to take advantage of the insurance and go to get checked.

I wonder if I should send the first part of my diary to the publisher. A living long-term diary about how my dream came true and we moved to Canada from scratch. Also wondering if I should keep a blog on some websites, so I googled where the best place to do this is. In general, the mood is depressing because of this covid, restrictions, instability and the future. They say that we will never be able to return to the old life, and this is even more frightening. We need to adapt to new realities ... How?

For the first time we went to British Columbia and stayed in a house with our Russian-speaking neighbors. We visited Emerald Lake and Lake Louise, but they are all frozen, so the effect and impressions are not at all the same as in the summer, when the colors of the landscape are created by water, mountains and this beauty takes your breath away ... I made a conclusion for myself, that we will travel with our family to avoid problems and conflicts. It is difficult for two families to get along in the same house with small children.

I agreed to meet with Fama tomorrow. She completed the Office Administrator course, and now has been working for 3 months free online from 9 to 5 for some company. After that, she will need to look for a job. I also thought about this course option, but her experience is something not entirely encouraging. Tomorrow I'll ask her for more details.

After passing the exams, I now don't know what to do. I have reached the point where I’ve got used to the changes and new life in Canada and I again need great goals and a new level to achieve. My energy requires a vector, and I need to find a direction. Let this post be something new and good in my life and bring success! Amen!

Hi! I'm Jack, and this is Tuck In, We're Rolling: Queer Hollywood Stories. This week's episode is titled 'The Hays Code and Other Bad Ideas'. This is gonna be a long episode, but it's a really important one, because it lays down the basis for a lot of our future discussions.

Let's start off with the basics. The Hays Code came about in 1930 but it wasn't really enforced until 1934. Basically, what happened was way back in 1915, the Supreme Court heard a case called “Mutual Film Corp. V. Industrial Commission of Ohio”, and voted 9-0 that free speech didn't extend to films. The courts kind of reasoned that, as a form of mass media, movies could literally be used “for evil”, and for some reason this decision also applied to circuses? I don't know, not entirely relevant, but I thought it was a weird aside. The decision by the court was what drove the studios to more closely regulate their content, and the decision was eventually overturned in 1952 with the hearing of the “Joseph Burstyn Inc. V. Wilson”, also known as the “Miracle Decision” because of the short film “The Miracle” that the case was heard over, and it really kind of marked a decline in movie censorship in the US, but by this time, the damage had already been done.

So, what was the Hays Code?

The Hays Code was basically the theaters and the studios agreeing to self-censor in order to avoid losing money from religious-led boycotts or local governments refusing to show so called “immoral” films. As I've mentioned, times were kinda tough in Depression era Hollywood, and a lot of studios went under or cut their contract stars to save money or try to cut costs somehow. The Code is actually called “The Motion Picture Production Code”, but it's known as the Hays Code after William H. Hays, who was the head of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, and it's basically the racist grandfather of the MPAA ratings system we all known and love today.

How does this come back to queer history? Thanks for asking, all six of my followers on SoundCloud! Let me read the entire section of the Hays Code pertaining to what it calls “impure love”:

“In the case of impure love, the love which society has always regarded as wrong and which has been banned by divine law, the following are important:

Impure love must not be presented as attractive or beautiful.

It must not be the subject of comedy or farce, or treated as material for laughter.

It must not be presented in such a way to arouse passion or morbid curiosity on the part of the audience.

It must not be made to seem right and permissible.

It must not be detailed in method or manner.

I've included a link to a copy of a Hays Code pamphlet and the transcript of it that I just read from so you can go check out the kind of stuff it talks about. And it talks about a lot. No interracial marriage or romance, no adultery, no white slavery. No boobs, no disrespecting the American flag, no dissing the clergy. It's kind of intense, and it explains some of the weird wholesomeness and out-of-left-field endings you get with a lot of the movies from the 30's and 40's.

Now, there were, obviously, stereotypes and stigma around being queer before the Hays Code, but it really cemented this feeling of “othering” – extending beyond queer people as well.

Pre-code, you had a lot of movies that used drag or gender role reversal for laughs. In 1915, Charlie Chaplin dressed in drag for his movie A Woman, and so did Fatty Arbuckle in Miss Fatty. Early films used the “sissy” or “pansy” stereotype – you know, and you've seen it today, the flamboyant, effeminate gay man who had no real humanity to speak of but was only there for a laugh. It was kind of the beginning of that stereotype, and even if it wasn't harmful – and still is – it wasn't as overtly hateful as some of the things we'll see later on.

I've done a lot of digging into what was going on with pre-code lesbians, and I found some movie titles and a few references, but not a lot. Lesbians weren't shown nearly as much as their gay “pansy” counterparts – but if they were shown, they were butch crossdressers for the audience to laugh at, or they were weirdo older spinsters who were dead by the end of the movie – huge surprise, right? Some notable portrayals of lesbians, overt or implied, include Louise Brooks in the 1929 German film Pandora's Box, this is one where the romantic relationship is implied. There's Marlene Dietrich in Morocco in 1930 – and we're gonna talk about in detail in a later episode. There's a girl-on-girl dance scene in 1932's Sign of the Cross, and a butch lesbian in 1933's Women They Talk About. And of course, there's Greta Garbo kissing another woman in Queen Christina in 1933. Of course, it's kind of difficult to find these references, so I want to point out that people have been dismissing lesbians and women who love women as just 'gals bein' pals' for a really, really long time.

After the Hays Code, a lot of this overt sexuality got swept under the rug and buried in subtext. Culturally, you're looking at a time – again, going back to what we talked about with masculine panic – when men are looking at homosexuality as a direct attack on their masculinity. During the Depression, men were already feeling emasculated because they were losing their jobs and they couldn't afford to take care of their families. They're looking at effeminate men and masculine women, and they start to freak out even more. So even though pre-code movies were using shock value – things like queer people or prostitution and violence – to get butts into seats and boost ticket sales, there was still this pervasive anxiety from men getting scared about their masculinity, and from religious groups that were worried about the effects of on-screen sinning on polite society.

The Code essentially killed the pansy, and buried queer people in hints and subtext. So in the 1930's and 40's, if you were queer in a movie, you were either really vaguely defined like Joel Cairo in The Maltese Falcon, who is explicitly gay in the source material, or you're a villain, also like Joel Cairo in The Maltese Falcon. Censorship evolved a little to say, basically, you can show perversion of almost any kind, but you can't show it in a positive light. And this sort of gels with the feelings of the time. You have characters running around committing crimes because of their sexuality, because back then people thought that being gay drove you insane as well as being a sin. People thought of being gay as being a disease or a defect and police were running around raiding gay bars and harassing women dressed in men's clothing, and it's really not a great time to be queer.

In 1948, Hitchcock's Rope comes out, and he's very obviously skirting the censors with the two antagonists. It's very thinly veiled that they're in a romantic relationship, but they're also still murderers. But that kind of moves us along into the 50's, when that 'Miracle Decision' has the courts saying that, no, films are protected by the first amendment and they're an art form, and this is really when censorship in film starts to decline. This is also about the time that its ruled that the studios can't own the movie theaters that distribute their films, so the monopoly on the film industry is broken up and the power of the old studios is drastically reduced.

There's still a censorship code at this point, of course, but it's really loosening up in the mid-50's. This movie is a landmark because it has what's considered to be the first movie with a named, explicitly gay character.

Now, that's great and all – but the shitty part comes from the plot. Basically, this guy is murdered violently and his cousin, played by Katharine Hepburn, sees it and goes nuts, so the mom – played by Liz Taylor – tries to bribe Monty Clift's character into giving her niece a lobotomy so that no one finds out that her son was gay. And don't worry, I'm going to talk a lot about Monty in a later episode and we'll talk about what kind of effect the movie had on him as closeted gay man, but this movie basically proved to the public that being a “mama's boy” or being controlled by your mom led to being gay, and it was sort of implied that violent murder was the inevitable fate of gay men, and that they kind of deserved it.

This is sort of a trend, moving into the 60's. You've got a lot of subtext in the 1959 remake of Ben-Hur, a lot of covert themes and implications. But at the same time, audiences aren't so interested in boycotting a film because of religious leaders, and movies with “questionable content” didn't really need production code or religious approval anymore. But even though we've got the code loosening to compete with television and the rise of the indie studio after the break-up of the old studio monopoly, you've still got a lot of queer characters who are miserable and depressed, or suicidal and homicidal. A lot of them are still dead by the time the credits roll.

In 1965, a movie called Inside Daisy Clover comes out, and there's a gay man in it. He isn't miserable or struggling, and he survives the entire movie – but he's never really explicitly named as gay. It's all still buried in subtext. In 1967, we get Marlon Brando and Liz Taylor in Reflections in a Golden Eye, starring Brando as a repressed gay Army major – a role that was supposed to be Monty Clift's, but he turned it down due to his declining health, supposedly. This is kind of an interesting, weird movie about sexual repression, both heterosexual and homosexual, and the violence it can spark. I'm going to talk in detail about this movie when I do my Brando episode, so I'm gonna put a pin in this discussion for now.

The sixties also brought us the beautiful weirdness of Andy Warhol, Kenneth Anger, and other people like them who were giving us fully realized and complex queer characters, but we don't see any movies marketed towards a gay audience until the 1970's. In 1968, the final death knell of the Hays Code came with the introduction of the MPAA rating system we're all familiar with today.

So, why the long history lesson? I wanted to talk about this bit of film history for several reasons.

First of all, chronologically it makes sense in the context of the show. Last week, we talked about noted vampire Rudolph Valentino – I finished American Horror Story: Hotel, by the way – and he died before the Hays Code was even written, a whole year before, to be exact.

Second of all, it's important to talk about all of this to give context to our future discussions about Hays-era movies and about the environment that actors were working in. Next week, we're going to be talking about some ladies I mentioned this week – Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, and Katherine Hepburn, women who's work snapped from pre to post-code, and we're going to pick this thread of queer representation post Hays Code in a few episodes, but for now, you have some background on the subject.

And third of all, and most importantly, now you can look at some of the stereotypes that we still have today and be able to trace them back to their origins. You see these harmful stereotypes all the time, on TV and in the movies. So we have like, Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs, and we can draw a straight line back to Joel Cairo in The Maltese Falcon. None of this is an excuse or anything – it was wrong then and it's wrong now – but now we have context. We can ask Hollywood, “Why haven't you changed? Why do these offensive things still happen?” You know, back in the 1950's, it was playing into toxix masculinity and that same fear of independent women that was driving criticism of Valentino in the 20's. And for whatever reason, we still have caricatures of queer people on screen as well as this same pervasive toxic and performative masculinity. We have a lot of trouble finding fully realized queer characters that don't end up dead or alone, or even still hidden in subtext.

There's this great moment in the last season of True Blood, maybe the only great moment other than Ryan Kwanten and Alexander Skarsgaard's sex scene – when Lafayette lashes out at Jessica after she catches him and her current boyfriend hooking up, and it's so good and sums up what I want to say so well, that I'm going to leave you with it:

“Everybody else in this fucking town is falling in love and getting engaged and having babies! Has it ever occurred to you that Lafayette – that queen that makes all you white heterosexuals laugh and feel good about yourselves – has it fucking ever occurred to you that maybe I want a piece of that happiness too?”

Are You Making The Most Of Social Media Web Analytics?

Most of us use it personally, and, in many cases, on our employer’s behalf as we run a full content strategy plan to best market the product or business we’re offering, writes Louise Auty, Content Lead, Beaconsoft Ltd

But how many of us are actually getting the best value out of it and using it in a way which gives the greatest return on investment for the hours we put in? Making the most of social media web analytics is a tricky proposition to get right as there’s an almost unlimited mine of data out there and finding the hidden gems can be time consuming.

Different tools are available for different jobs, but the chances are most people will have at least taken a glance at Google Analytics, as well as the inbuilt data metrics provided by platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and the rest.

Every time someone takes an action on a social media platform, a digital footprint is created. Each time someone else reads that content, they’re adding to the footprint and widening its reach. Analysing that trail is where the skill comes in for digital marketers.

Back To Basics

The most important thing to remember is WHY we’re doing the job we’re doing, so make sure you include this as a key point on any social content strategy or marketing plan - tracking the buyers/customers journey is why we’re paying attention to the metrics.

This is the bottom line. Every interaction on social media and on our websites should have the ultimate aim of driving more interest in our brand and/or our product/s. Finding the right Return of Investment for time spent is why we need to make the most of social media web analytics.

The one thing which applies to all companies - and a deciding factor in any strategy - is the resources you have available. Do you have the manpower to use social media as a customer experience tool for example? Or will it only be a marketing vehicle to drive traffic to your website for the purchase of products?

Finding The Right Metrics

If you’re running multiple social channels - a blog, email campaigns, social media posts on platforms like Twitter, Facebook etc - then you need to isolate the right metrics to measure for your business. Use your business goals to define these. Going back to our earlier statement: tracking the buyers/customers journey is why we’re paying attention to the metrics.

If your main business goal is to sell more products, you should be looking at engagement, follower growth, extended reach and email sign-ups.

But not all platforms have the same metrics available. Facebook Insights give you a wealth of data with page level and post level exports but the same can’t be said of Twitter. Other platforms like Instagram don’t give you any more insights than the in-app notifications of mentions and comments.

On top of this, while all data can, and is, measured, access to this data isn’t always free. Analytics programs can give marketers amazing insights but it often comes with a cost. Not only with the sheer wealth of data available - and infinite combinations of metrics and reports to track and measure - but sometimes with a monthly/yearly subscription fee.

Tracking The Data

When it comes to tracking the data, there are a number of considerations to bear in mind. According to HubSpot every analytics statement should have the following:

As you can see in the examples below, each statement clearly indicates the source of the traffic and any segmented data - it gives a value, what the metric being measured was, and the duration of the measurement being made.

In practical terms, this means you should bring as much data diversity as possible into any strategy analysis and allow for variations in the results.

Thomas C Redman, writing in a publication by the Harvard Business Review, highlighted a number of data-driven features which can help businesses to use social media web analytics and data more effectively:

Use data to allow for more in-depth understanding of your worlds

Get along with uncertainty

Recognise the importance of high quality data and invest to improve

Integrate the ability to understand data with the implications and your intuition

Identifying the decision criteria can vary depending on the circumstances

Be good investigators and experimenters

Learn from mistakes

Recognise that making a decision is only the first step

The key factor here is to accept that there are variables and the process, even if it’s controlled, can still change. We all know that trying to work out Google’s SERPs and SEO positioning is a law unto itself so bear this in mind. Social media data is especially susceptible to variation as the algorithms which power them are known only to those working behind the scenes.

Secondly, the quality of the data is paramount. High quality data i.e. direct from source so Google Analytics or Facebook Insights, means you’re looking at the same comparable information each time - give or take those pesky algorithms!

As always, apply SMART guidelines to your efforts:

Specific: Set real targets with a deadline i.e. I want 500 more followers by the end of the year

Measurable: Make sure they’re trackable goals.

Attainable: Work towards a challenging goal but one which is realistic. Don’t try to become number one in your market overnight.

Realistic: Consider what you or your team is truthfully capable of doing and take into account stumbling blocks or hurdles i.e. time or staff availability.

Time: Keep to your deadline.

It can be overwhelming, and expensive, trying to work out what data you need and which tools you need to have.

His bestsellers include The Next Economy, Growing a Business, and Natural Capitalism (Bill Clinton called it “one of the five most important books in the world”) and now Drawdown. Hawken began by acknowledging the failure of current strategies. “Mitigation, stabilization, reduction,” he said. “It’s a little bit like Thelma and Louise in slow motion … you’re still going over the cliff.” His next slide presented dramatic data on the alarming rise in CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere. “The last time we were at these levels was 14 million years ago,” he said, pointing to the rising arrow on the chart. “Anybody who says they know what’s going to happen – it’s complete guesswork. We’re in terra nova.” Next, Hawken displayed a chart showing a rising CO2 line that peaks and then falls. “This is what Drawdown looks like theoretically,” he said pointing to a potential peak in 2047. “It shows a point in time where there’s an inflection. That’s what we have to aim for.” Hawken says the genesis for Project Drawdown dates back to the Carbon Mitigation Initiative, launched by Princeton University and BP in 2000. Scientists have been working at least that long to identify ways to reduce the amount of carbon released into the air, the detrimental effects of which include climate change, extreme weather, and severe economic costs. Yet Hawken saw the initiative’s tactics as wrongheaded. He noted that its 15 proposed solutions would have required energy, utility and car companies – “the most conservative companies in the world” – to take the lead in building and creating things that would be money losers. Instead, Hawken began talking to friends about creating a list of “what we can do, and what it would cost.” Environmental NGOs told him it was a great idea, but they lacked the expertise. So did Hawken. The idea died. Lean Startup: Crowdsourcing the Science Fast forward to 2013. Borrowing a page out of the lean startup playbook, the serial entrepreneur dreamed up the outlandish idea of crowdsourcing the science and data for a book of solutions. “We didn’t have any money,” he said. “No one offered any money.” Hawken and his collaborators instead reached out to PhDs and research fellows worldwide, paying them modest stipends for their input. “They are extraordinary people. They did the core research in Drawdown,” he said. “twenty-two countries, six continents, 40 percent women, half PhD’s, all advanced degrees. They mapped, measured, and modeled the most substantive solutions to global warming.” The book also includes companion prose by such luminaries as Pope Francis, renowned environmentalist author Michael Pollan, and others. Hawken enlisted 122 advisors to review the book’s findings. Going big, broad, and deep, the opposite of the superficial “ten solutions to climate change” you might find in a cursory Google search, the project Drawdown team came up with 100 carbon-cutting solutions, ranked according to their potential impact by 2050. Big Data Surprise Solutions The surprise? Migrating away from fossil fuels is only part of the solution. As Hawken clicked through his slides, the tremendous variety of planet-saving efforts was on display. “Rice is one of the largest sources of methane emissions,” he said. “You take the water off in the middle of production and you reduce methane production by 50 percent and improve the product, at no capital cost.” After quickly sharing some standard solutions – offshore wind turbines, nuclear, and rooftop solar – he pulled up a slide of an adolescent girl in school. “This is educating girls. This is one of the most important solutions – number 6,” he said to an appreciative, clapping audience. “Girls are taken out of school at puberty, and married off and have an average of 5 children.” Education, said Hawken, gives girls a chance “to be a woman” on her own terms. What’s more, identifying the solution as “Educating Girls” as opposed to “Population Control” transforms the idea into a positive goal nearly everyone can get behind. That’s a key element of Drawdown: replacing the tired and often militaristic language hindering substantive climate change. Terms in the book consciously avoid the often negative framing associated with global warming. Hawken continued his countdown – following education with food. “This is reduced food waste – number three,” he said before pulling up a photo showing truckloads of rotting produce. He paused for effect. “Who knew? We just did the math.” And the number four solution? “A plant rich diet.” Hawken said the team was so astonished by many of the top solutions – number one is refrigerants (HFCs) – that he pulled together the top five and challenged an international expert to name them, and she got them all wrong. Two more experts were similarly off target. “This is what surprised us,” he said. “Food is bigger than energy. Who knew?” and that knowledge, Hawken said, grants us power. “We didn’t make the plan, we found it. This is really important to understand. It’s here. Humanity has the collective wisdom. Every solution that we modeled is scaling.” After Hawken received a standing ovation from the audience, Pete Leyden tapped the power of the crowd with a spirited Q&A. “How are you feeling about some of the bad news that rolled out of Washington and the tweeter-in-chief?” an audience member probed. “How much damage are we capable of doing before some of the good news begins to kick in?” “Very little. Very, very little.” Hawken said, dismissing President Trump’s potential to inflict any lasting harm. “What he says and what he does are two different things. The clean energy plan was never instituted; it’s been in court for two years. So he can’t roll it back because it never happened. Second, we have created a bureaucracy that’s so slow it’s molasses in terms of trying to change it for the bad or the good. He wants to change it for the worse … But I just didn’t pay attention at all to that,” said an unfazed Hawken. “This is a global model and if anything what we’re seeing is a sunset effect on fossil fuels, not the rebirth of idiocy.
