intersections also don’t have to be immutable* static aspects of a person (sex, race, transness, etc) to affect that person’s life negatively or positively.

here are some examples of commonly overlooked (in my experience) aspects of intersectionality:

- housedness (are you a renter or an owner? couch-surfing, or on the street? do you live in a trailer or a three story house?)

- geographic location (how far away is the nearest grocery store? the nearest fire station? do you live in the heart of the city or in the middle of nowhere? are you in the global south? the USamerican south? a war zone?)

- support system (do you have people to fall back on if needed? couches to crash on or familial support with finances, transportation, etc? do you see a therapist? can you trust that therapist?)

- communication style (how is your grasp on social cues? do you use aac? do you stutter, or have other speech impediments, disorganized thoughts or speech? do you over or under explain?)

- education (did you drop out? when? do you have a degree? what kind/how many? did you go to a Rich school?)

- family structure (divorced/estranged parents, non-biological guardians? many children or no children? polyamorous or otherwise queer parents? do your grandparents live with you? how many people live in your home?)

- work experience (what kinds of jobs have you done, if any? have you been able to hold a job before? were you isolated from society or the ability to develop Skills? or are you a nepo baby?)

- language (are you a native or learned english speaker? how many languages do you speak? how fluently? how does this compare to others in your area? has it affected your opportunities?)

- career stage (are you fresh out of school/college, or have you been in your field for years? what accreditation or accomplishments do you have?)

- caring duties (do you care for children or adults at home? do you provide for others? or are you solely supporting yourself?)

- childhood household stability (did you grow up in a household where you were cared for and protected? was there a lot of chaos? did you grow up moving around a lot, or did you only live in one place? did you face eviction, infestation, or other household problems as a child?)

these are all aspects that contribute to one’s daily experience of privilege, oppression, and lack thereof.

sure, some of these things are facets of larger things like class or ability, but these things (and many more) are important intersections to be aware of, and can affect each individual’s experience in different ways.

*by immutable i mean not that these things cannot be changed so much as they are viewed as an intrinsic part of someone as opposed to a condition they live in/with

intersectionality is not just a checklist of privilege points as much as it is a holistic approach to analyzing how points of oppression interact in society.
