Among these, Dwarka, located in the state of Gujarat, holds a special place as it is believed to be the kingdom of Lord Krishna. For many pilgrims, starting the Char Dham Yatra from Dwarka is both a spiritual and fulfilling experience.
In this guide, we will explore the significance of Dwarka, the key attractions, and tips for planning your pilgrimage, including finding good hotels in Dwarka for a comfortable stay.
The Spiritual Significance of Dwarka
Dwarka, known as the “Gateway to Heaven,” is one of the seven ancient cities in India and is considered one of the holiest places in the country. It is believed that Lord Krishna established his kingdom here after leaving Mathura. The city is home to the Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir, which is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus.
Visiting Dwarka is considered a crucial part of the Char Dham Yatra as it is believed that a pilgrimage to Dwarka can help devotees attain moksha (liberation) and cleanse their souls.
Key Attractions in Dwarka
1. Dwarkadhish Temple
The Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir, is the main attraction in Dwarka and a must-visit for all pilgrims. The temple is over 2,000 years old and is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is worshipped here as the “King of Dwarka.” The temple’s stunning architecture, with its five-story structure supported by 72 pillars, is a sight to behold.
The temple is open to devotees throughout the day, and the best time to visit is during the morning and evening aarti (prayer ceremony). The vibrant atmosphere during the aarti, with the chanting of hymns and the ringing of bells, creates a deeply spiritual experience.
2. Bet Dwarka
Bet Dwarka, also known as Bet Shankhoddar, is an island located about 30 kilometers from the main city of Dwarka. It is believed to be the original residence of Lord Krishna and his family. The island is accessible by boat, and the journey itself is a serene experience, offering beautiful views of the Arabian Sea.
Bet Dwarka is home to several temples, the most significant being the Dwarkadhish Temple on the island. Pilgrims can also visit the Hanuman Dandi Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, and the Rukmini Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna’s consort, Rukmini.
3. Rukmini Devi Temple
Located about 2 kilometers from the Dwarkadhish Temple, the Rukmini Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Rukmini, the consort of Lord Krishna. The temple is known for its intricate carvings and beautiful sculptures that depict various scenes from Hindu mythology.
According to legend, visiting the Dwarkadhish Temple without paying homage to Rukmini Devi is considered incomplete, making this temple an essential part of the pilgrimage.
4. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located about 17 kilometers from Dwarka and is an important stop for pilgrims on the Char Dham Yatra. The temple is known for its giant 25-meter-tall statue of Lord Shiva, which stands majestically in the temple complex.
Visiting the Nageshwar Temple is believed to rid devotees of all sins and provide protection from evil forces. The temple’s serene surroundings and spiritual significance make it a must-visit during your pilgrimage.
5. Gomti Ghat
The Gomti Ghat is located on the banks of the Gomti River, near the Dwarkadhish Temple. It is believed that the river Gomti descended from heaven and that taking a dip in its waters can purify the soul and wash away sins. The ghat is also the site of several ancient temples, including the Samudra Narayan Temple, dedicated to the God of the Sea.
Pilgrims often visit the Gomti Ghat to perform rituals and offer prayers before heading to the Dwarkadhish Temple. The serene atmosphere at the ghat, with the gentle flow of the river and the sound of temple bells, provides a peaceful setting for meditation and reflection.

Every year about 4 to 5 crores visitors come to Gujarat and feel resourceful to see the development of the state.  The law and order in terms of its state highways and national highways are a setting example of how the Gujarat state has performed and how vivid travellers can enroute through road, rail and air. The silver lining are the travel places boasted by Gujarat tourism which are famously the Gir wild life sanctuary, the religious Somnath Dwarka, the Baroda palace, saputara, ran of Kutch, the Gandhi ashram.
Tumblr media
1. Gir national park:
Gir National Park is proximately 7 to 9 hours from Ahmedabad. It has one of the very subtle and lavish hotels to relax and houses villas to. Famously, Gir is a place to Asiatic lions and the most personalised feel is that each lion in this national park has a name. Apart from lions the national parks have reptiles, mammals commonly the deer’s and varied species of the cat family. The bus is locally made which shall leave you with a raw feel of one of the Tarzan movies and its surroundings. Even on a hot sunny afternoon the bus driver will not miss to show you the best Asiatic lions and promise you to binge on a fun wild life adventure. The eye opener in this national park are the varied trees, flowering plants and collection of silk cotton trees that makes you feel such close to the Mother Nature.
2. Somnath and Dwarka:
Ornaments of Gujarat called the Somnath and the Dwarka are the religious abode of lord shiva and lord Krishna respectively. These abodes are just 3 to 4 hours from the gir national park, and the residents in these abodes are the most peaceful and helping people. Somnath is famous for its 12 jyotirlingas and the story behind it would excite the children not just to ask questions but to go and run into a thesis of this heritages’ wonder. It is been believed that Somnath temple was such loved by the gods that god Sama built it in gold, then ravana made it in silver, Krishna made it in wood and king bhimdev made with stones. Finally, the plan of god bhimdev got approved and today the Somnath temple is made of the precious stone. Its presence can be felt by the passengers once they enter the temple. Dwarka temple just near Somnath is the temple of lord Krishna and is on the bay of the lake and when you see the glimpse of it, you will call it as “the dreamy kingdom of lord Krishna”. According to a legend lord Krishna settled here after he defeated his uncle Kansa at Mathura. And this mythology of Krishna chivalry in winning against Kans in Mathura is remarkable when you see dwarkadheesh at a glance.
3. The Laxmi Villas Palace:
When you think Gujarat, you think Baroda. Baroda is a city known for its club culture and art and craft in the Baroda universities are matched at international levels. The LaxmiVillas Palace in Vadodara was constructed by the Gaekwad family a proper Maratha family who ruled the Baroda state then. And the architect of this palace was Charles mant and his architectural style was indo- Saracenic revival architecture. It is four times the size of Buckingham palace and boasted some of the fun movie’s life partner, prem rog, grand masti and many more.
4. Saputara:
Saputara is a beautiful spot near a tit bit spot dang. Looking for some bamboo purchase and exploring something tribal these are the places you can get turbulent at in Gujarat. Saputara is a hilly area wrapped around the lake, astep garden and a lake garden. Children would find its lush greenness exciting and you would rejoice seeing them be zapped up. So, at Saputara laze up all day by just breathing its breezy air and getting to shop for ritual objects, tribal arts and cultural toys.
5. Rann of Kutch:
Rann of Kutch is an internationally known festival “the white sand” or say “the white desertis the time when moon is as white and it shines on this white sand leaving the passengers with their eyes open to absorb this beauty. Cultural dances, go carts, camel safaris, tents to stay, people decked up in Indian wear are the significance of how culture of Gujarat and its rituals are. This happens between November and January and international tourists just will not get enough of this as this would be a complete contrast to what they feel Guajarati would be. Gujarat an place known for Gandhi ashram looks peaceful as compared to its other cities but its dynamism can be seen through all its festivals meaning Navratri, janmashmi, uttaryan and the mains “the white desert festival” one of the world biggest and hugest white salt marsh desert residing in between the amazing Thar desert of India and Arabian sea.
6. Gandhi ashram:
The monument “Gandhi ashram” is in the city of Ahmedabad. And this is the place where our loving “Gandhi bapu” resided. Any passenger would not leave the place without tears, because the moment you enter the place all the stories of our freedom fights will start flashing in front. From Gandhiji’s moments to his Satyagraha this place will get the attribute simplicity out and you would just want to sit near the river front and remember those stalwart heroes because of whom we got our freedom.
