A Guide to Summer Shirts
There’s an old saying about how there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. I would amend that to say bad materials. Just as we rely on heavier tweeds and flannels in the wintertime to stay warm, keeping cool and dry in the summer starts with the right cloth. And this past weekend, when we had another heat wave, I was thankful to have some seasonally appropriate shirts. You don’t need complicated, tech fabrics to stay dry. Simple, natural fibers (often derived from plants) are still the way to go. It helps, however, to know which fabrics help you eek out that extra bit of summer comfort. A rundown of some options:
Open Weave Fabrics
More important than anything else, how cool a fabric feels is determined by its weave. This is why we often recommend tropical wool jackets and trousers in the summer. Even if a fabric is made from wool, an open weave will allow your body’s heat and moisture to escape, leaving you feeling more comfortable than if you were wearing something made from a dense linen.
For shirts, however, the calculation is a little more complicated. Here, a very open, airy weave can leave the shirt looking gauzy. You’ll feel like you’re not wearing anything, but look like it too. The trick is to find something that balances out comfort and wearability.
The most breathable of shirtings is voile, which is a featherweight, porous fabric made from cotton. It’s great for the most brutal of climates, but might leave you feeling a bit indiscrete. Pro tip: go for a darker color, such as these from Dduggoff or Junya Watanabe. They’ll do a better job of hiding your body underneath than the same fabric in white.
For something less sheer, our advertiser Proper Cloth has some slubby Japanese cottons and a new material called Airtex. The second, pictured above, is breathable fabric, but made in a weave that’s similar to pique cotton (the material you find on polos). Both are good enough to wear on their own, even in casual business settings. I also like YMC’s Malick shirt, which is almost transparent when you hold it up to the light, but not when you have it on.
Linen and Linen Blends
Much of what’s been written about linen misses what makes the material so great for shirts. Linen is exceptionally good at wicking moisture from the skin, which means it’ll leave you feeling drier on a hot, humid day. Compare that to cotton, which will cling to your skin all day at the slightest hint of sweat.
It does wrinkle easily, however. If that bothers you, get a cotton-linen blend, which will hold its shape better throughout the day. Brand new linen can also feel scratchy at first, but the material softens with wash and wear. The best bed sheets are often made from long-staple linen fibers because of how soft and comfortable the material feels on warm nights.
You can find linen shirts at all sorts of places. J. Crew's are an exceptionally good value. Their collars feel a bit skimpy at times, but the construction and materials are good for the price. I also like the ones at Proper Cloth, Ledbury, The Armoury, and Gitman Vintage. The awning striped one you see above is from Drake’s.
Oxford Cloth
Oxford can seem like a strange summer fabric. It’s typically a heavier, thicker shirting, which doesn’t seem like the sort of thing you’d want to wear on a muggy day. But here’s the thing: plain weaves are more breathable than twills. The difference can be small, but given a choice, you’re better off with a chambray, an end-on-end, or a loose basketweave when temperatures climb above 80.
Of all the plain weaves, oxford is my favorite. Over the years, oxford-cloth button-downs have come to symbolize all that’s good: casualness, youth, trustworthiness, dependability, and professionalism. They can also be worn with nearly anything -- jeans or pressed trousers, sneakers or dress shoes, field jackets or sport coats. They’re just about as versatile as a shirt can get, particularly in light blue.
If you’re looking for provenance, start with Brooks Brothers. They’re the inventor of the style, after all, and their OCBDs now come with unlined collars (allowing the color to have a bit more expression). Michael Spencer offers the same cuts and unlined collars, but with customizable options and at lower prices (they’re having a sale, which ends today). Mercer & Sons has one of the best looking collars, but their shirts often fit like sails. Kamakura offers trimmer cuts, but their collars often only look good when worn without a tie. Proper Cloth is somewhere in-between these two worlds -- a versatile, handsome collar, which you can put onto any made-to-measure shirt. For value, nobody beats Lands’ End.
Madras
As the story goes, Madras was imported into the US by way of Brooks Brothers, who took the traditional Indian cloth and made them into shirts. When they sold the shirts, however, they found customers coming back angry, complaining about how the vegetable dyes bled in the wash. Henceforth, Brooks Brothers marketed that as a feature, not a liability. Their madras shirts were “guaranteed to bleed,” they said. Which over time, gave their shirts a semi-watercolor like appearance.
It’s hard to find bleeding madras nowadays. Few people want to put up with their special care instructions, so most manufacturers stick with madras-inspired designs, rather than the originals. That means you still get those bright tartans, but they won’t bleed in the wash and ruin your other clothes.
J. Crew is great for affordable madras-inspired shirts. Theirs fit slim, but not unreasonably so, and come in really nice patterns. There’s also Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren, the two stalwarts of major prep retailing nowadays, although I think Ralph Lauren’s shirts look better without that pony logo (no logo-free options in madras this season, unfortunately). You can also try O’Connell’s and Gitman Vintage, both of which are a step above in terms of quality.
Rayon
If you’re not familiar with the word rayon, you’re definitely familiar with the material. It’s commonly used to line suit jackets and sport coats, as well as some casual outerwear. Rayon first became popular in the 1920s as a substitute for silk (indeed, it’s sometimes referred to as “artificial silk”). It has the same supple and smooth texture, but is cheaper to produce. More importantly, it doesn’t wear as warm, which is why bespoke tailors have mostly given up silk linings for rayon.
Unlike cotton or linen, however, rayon doesn’t soak up sweat very well, which means moisture can get trapped inside a rayon shirt on a hot day. Still, if the weather has a dry heat to it, I find rayon to be great for summer. There’s something cool and refreshing about feeling it against your skin. The other downside is that it typically has to be dry cleaned or handwashed. On the other hand, I find I can get a few more wearings out of a rayon shirt, at least compared to cotton.
It’s hard to find good rayon shirts, unfortunately. Bryceland’s in Japan has some great mid-century prints, one of which is pictured above. They’re getting some new stock next month and can take email orders. Alternatively, Two Palms uses the material. Their Aloha shirts aren’t the best made (the interiors are roughly finished and the collars could use better linings), but they’re nicely affordable at around $40. You can find them at Independence and their online site.
Seersucker
Finally, there’s seersucker, which is an American classic. The puckered texture is made by pulling certain lengthwise yarns, known as the warp, a little tighter than the rest. That puckering is said to allow air to circulate better than regular shirtings, although I find the material to be just better at not sticking against sweaty skin. Just as important: seersucker launders easily, doesn’t require ironing, and has a sort of casual, pre-rumpled look. Perfect for the dog days of summer.
You can find seersucker shirts at many of the same companies mentioned above -- J. Crew, Brooks Brothers, Gitman Vintage, Proper Cloth, and Michael Spencer. Additionally, Camoshita has a cream colored one this season with a band collar, which will look a little less preppy than a blue-and-white button-down (although, nothing wrong with that). Club Monaco has something similar, but at a more affordable price. I also like these white short sleeves from Portuguese Flannel and New England Shirt Company.
A word of caution: navy seersucker can be a nice way to modernize the look, although dark colored cottons will show their age more easily than white. It gives the fabric a more casual appearance, but if you want the shirt to keep its new look a little longer, go with a lighter color.

Sleeping on a bad mattress is, well, exhausting. If you’re constantly waking up feeling sore, tossing and turning throughout the night, and feeling tired during the day, it may be time to start shopping for a new bed.
Luckily, you have more options than ever – which can be a blessing and a curse. Shopping for a new mattress can feel overwhelming when you have so many choices to make: soft or firm? Online or in-store? Memory foam, innerspring or something else entirely? It can be hard to make sense of it all.

How Do You Sleep?
Before you start testing out mattresses or checking out online retailers, you need to think about what you’re looking for.
This is especially important if you plan on purchasing a mattress online. You want to know what kind of sleeper you are and what types of bed features feel most comfortable to you.

What is your regular sleeping position? Side sleepers will likely want something that’s fairly soft, to provide good pressure relief around their shoulders and hips. According to Consumer Reports, mattress prices are significantly marked up, so there’s room for negotiation. Online mattress shopping has really blown up in recent years, making shopping for mattresses easier than ever – no more having to physically travel from store to store listening to the spiels of pushy salespeople.
While the idea of buying a mattress without being able to feel it first might seem like a bad idea, reputable online sellers will offer a trial period where you’ll be able to return the mattress if it doesn’t work for you. Companies usually offer at least a 100-day trial period, so you’ll have plenty of time to see if it’s a good fit.
Online mattress retailers have risen to the challenge of being worthy competitors to brick-and-mortar stores, and you don’t have to worry about receiving a quality product – provided you purchase from a reputable brand. Many mattresses from online retailers perform just as well as their in-store counterparts.
Testing It Out

We’re headed right into the thick of the holiday season. Over the next several weeks, a lot of us will be spending time on airplanes in order to be with family. As you all know, I travel constantly and now with the holidays it’s with my family, which can be a little stressful! It’s stating the obvious to say that air travel these days isn’t easy. Crowded flights with too-little leg room, long lines and even longer delays, weary and irritable fellow travelers can all make air travel unpleasant. Flying can also do a number on sleep. Travel-related stress and jet lag disrupt sleep cycles and cause sleep deprivation. (The fast food and junk food we tend to eat while traveling doesn’t help, either.) Just in time for the holidays, I thought I’d share with you the list of sleep tips for flying that I’ve curated over the years, over hundreds of thousands of miles of air travel. Time your flight right I always encourage people to make travel arrangements with their sleep in mind. That way you can minimize your need to sleep on your flight, or at least align your air travel with your sleep schedule. Flights that arrive in the early evening are ideal. That gives you time to take a walk, have a light supper, and get a full night of sleep. Of course, that’s not always possible. If you’re traveling overnight or at off-peak hours, plan to sleep on your flight during the window of time you’d be sleeping in your destination time zone. (The same goes for eating, and consuming caffeine.) That’s one way to help minimize jet lag. Buy the best ticket you can afford It can be tempting to book the most budget-friendly seats available. But your comfort and your sleep will benefit if you move up the ladder. Business and first-class offer bigger, more comfortable seats as well as more legroom and more ability to recline. (Even “premium economy” has additional comfort perks that can make a difference to your comfort and rest on a plane—you can see some of those details by airline, here.) Particularly if you’re on a long flight, it’s worth purchasing the best ticket within your budget. Use your miles, watch for specials, and ask airlines about upgrades. Being able to recline and stretch your legs while you fly often costs less than you think. Also, check out www.seatguru.com. This is one of my favorite sites and it tells you which seats on the plane are great for sleep! Reserve a window seat This one’s a no-brainer. Sitting next to the window gives you a natural place to lean in for a nap. You’re also less likely to be disturbed by activity happening in the aisles. And you won’t be awakened from sleep by seatmates asking you to shift your knees so they can pass through. Book seats away from the lavatories, where there’s more likely to be steady activity and disruptive noise that will make it harder to catch some zzz’s. Sleep at the right times on overnight flights Traveling west is easier on sleep and circadian rhythms than traveling east. If you’re on a late flight headed east, plan to get your sleep in the early hours of your flight. You’ll be aligning yourself with the earlier evening hours of your destination. For westbound overnight flights, you’ll want to do the reverse. Delaying sleep until later in the flight can help you adjust your sleep cycle to your destination’s later time zone. You’ll get two free jet lag plans! Wear comfy clothes I can’t stress this one enough. Loose-fitting clothes in soft, natural fabrics are key for traveling comfortably and sleeping well on planes. I’m not suggesting you actually travel in your PJs. But do avoid clothing that pinches or constricts you. Natural fabrics that are breathable will help your body regulate its temperature and avoid overheating on those times when the a/c isn’t working and you’re stuck on the tarmac. But watch out for those wool sweaters that might itch and irritate your skin while you’re trying to sneak in some sleep during your flight. Layer up for warmth and temperature flexibility You won’t have any control over the temperature of your flight, so it helps to wear a few simple, lightweight layers you can add or remove as needed. Keep in mind, airline cabins are more likely to be chilly than hot. Being too hot or too cold will interfere with your ability to sleep. Cold feet make it difficult to sleep, so wear comfy, warm socks. Stretch your legs before you settle in Before boarding, walk a bit in the airport, and do some simple calf stretches. On long flights, be sure to get up and move around periodically. Also, stretch and flex your legs while you’re sitting. Also do a figure 4 stretch every 30-60 min in your seat to keep your lower back loose. This will help you avoid the stiffness and pain that can come from extended periods of sitting. Stretching and movement ahead of your flight, as well as during your flight, also help reduce your risk of blood clots. The CDC offers some important information on the dangers of blood clots during long-distance travel, and how to reduce your risk. Here’s one way: use compression socks. I know you think they are only for old people, but you are wrong, these can be a tremendous help! Watch your posture Don’t cross your legs in your seat. This posture will impede normal blood flow in your lower body. A crossed-leg position also twists your spine out of alignment, which can cause pain and discomfort that may interfere with sleeping on your flight and when you finally land in a bed. Sit with your legs extended in front of you as much as is possible, ideally with a slight bend in your knees. Relax with a neck pillow A neck pillow is part of my sleep-essentials travel kit. (I’ll talk about what else is in that kit in a minute.) Having a travel pillow can make the difference between a comfortable in-flight nap and a long, tedious, uncomfortable flight that ends with no sleep and a stiff neck. Select one that’s lightweight and easy to pack in your carry on. Make sure the fabric is comfortable against your skin. Choose one in fleece and it can keep your neck from feeling cold on the plane—another boost for your sleep. Pack healthy, sleep-friendly snacks Eating well while traveling can be a real challenge. You won’t be able to fall asleep on your flight if you’re starving, so be sure to have some light snack options handy. Fruits and nuts make great travel foods. So do my favorite pre-sleep snack, Nightfood bars. Avoid eating large, heavy meals. And time your eating so it aligns with the schedule of your destination—that’s another way to help re-sync your circadian rhythms and limit jet lag. Stay hydrated Flying is notorious for causing dehydration. Why? Airplane cabin environments are very low in humidity. That creates the throat-scratching, uncomfortably dry air we associate with airplanes. A dry environment accelerates the rate at which we lose water from our bodies. Keep a water bottle handy sip on throughout your flight. You’ll feel better and have an easier time sleeping in transit. On a related note: new research shows dehydration is connected to sleep deprivation. If you’re not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, you’re more likely to be dehydrated. Limit alcohol You knew this one was coming, right? One drink before or during your flight is fine. But any more than that will likely interfere with your sleep—even if those couple of drinks help you fall asleep initially. Alcohol disrupts sleep rhythms. It also dehydrates—compounding an issue that’s already problematic for sleeping in-flight. Alcohol keeps us in lighter stages of sleep, which means you’re more likely to be awakened by every bit of jostling or conversation in your area of the plane. Use a natural sleep aid A natural supplement can help give your body the extra lift into sleep it needs when you’re traveling. For many years, I used melatonin for traveling, both on my flights and to adjust to a new time zone. Make sure your seatbelt is visible before your nap You’re about to settle in for some zzz’s during the middle of your flight. Before you close your eyes, make sure your seatbelt can be seen by flight crew, so they don’t need to wake you to check that you’re fastened in properly. (This has ruined many a nap for frequent travelers.) If you’re using a blanket or an oversized sweater, just make sure your seatbelt is fastened on top of your comfy layers. Have a meditation handy Stress, anxiety and frustration are all common to air travel. Breathing exercises, visualization, and meditation all can help you relax. These relaxation techniques help sleep too. Rather than feeling agitated and tense all flight long, wouldn’t you rather be getting some well-deserved rest? If you’re not sure how to meditate, install a guided meditation app on your phone. The simplest breathing exercise I know can work wonders in the middle of a stressful flight. It’s called 4-7-8 breathing. Here’s how to use it. In a comfortable position, with your eyes open or closed:
Inhale for 4 seconds
Hold breath for 7 seconds
Exhale slowly, for 8 seconds
Repeat several times
That’s it! This will calm you down, slowing your breathing and your heart rate. This simple exercise and other simple meditations are helpful in reducing anxiety about flying. They’re also great everyday tools to help you sleep better. Make a travel playlist (and load up on audiobooks) Music that relaxes you can reduce your stress and keep you closer to sleep mode while on a grueling flight. Create a soothing playlist of favorite tunes to calm you down and help transport your mind away from your less-than-ideal sleep circumstances. I also like to have a couple of new audiobooks on hand, I find them even more relaxing than reading while on a flight. Limit light exposure Eye masks are essential for sleeping while traveling. I like to keep a couple in my pre-packed sleep travel kit. You can go even further in limiting sleep-reducing light exposure on flights. Reduce the brightness and the color temperature on your digital devices, so you’re not flooding your eyes (and your brain) with stimulating, sleep-inhibiting blue light. I also travel with a pair of Sleep Doctor Blue Light Blocking Glasses. These high-quality blue light blockers will significantly reduce your exposure to bright lights from your own devices—and those nearby devices that belong to your seatmates. Pack a sleep-kit for the plane I don’t “wing it” when it comes to travel. I keep a sleep-kit handy for all the times I have to hop on a plane. Dedicating space in your carry-on bag to these items ensures you’re prepared to exert some control over your environment and get the sleep you need. My sleep kit includes:

A look at the official Nardo lap times proves the point: on the handling circuit the Urus is every bit as fast as the Huracán.
This remarkable achievement required plenty of extra work by Reggiani’s team, especially in the chassis department. The Urus’ all-wheel drive system utilizes a Torsen center differential, enabling a wide front-to-rear torque split range, and a mechanical rear diff lock for a subtle left-right distribution. In other words, there is no brake-induced torque vectoring and no conventional self-locking center diff. Part of the package is a 48-volt system which powers the fully adjustable sway bars along with the air conditioning. Another item included in the list price that reportedly starts somewhere south of $200,000 are huge, 17-inch carbon-ceramic brake discs. Completing the high-tech DNA is an adaptive air suspension and rear-wheel steering. At this point, Urus customers have no choice in terms of engine or equipment pack, but there is a plug-in hybrid V-6 in the works for China and possibly the rest of the world later. We also expect a lighter Performante version rated at 700-plus horsepower.

I already mentioned the seats and leisurely eight-speed autobox, and I’m going to add to the list the mildly irritating front end pitch through very fast corners, the not exactly superfast tip-in, the generous measure of brake dive and acceleration squat, the somewhat messy ergonomics, and the puerile exhaust note in Corsa mode. And its brawny twin-turbo V-8 is in no way as special as Lamborghini’s charismatic, naturally-aspirated V-10. That said the Urus has many talents, with its key assets being totally involving handling and raw, sports car-like performance all the way to the limit. Despite its genetic detriments—considerable dimensions, high center of gravity, substantial weight—the Urus hugs the road like a salamander climbing up a sheet of glass, it juggles power and torque like an orangutan brachiating between trees, its responses are as sharp as a chameleon’s tongue, and it decelerates like a serpent recoiling from an attack. In the exercise of these talents, it downs fuel at the rate of a Hummer H2 or a stretched black Escalade.
Said Hummer should do well on Nardo’s off-road setup, but it wouldn’t do as well as the Urus, and that’s a promise. After all, there are no serious climbs and descents, deep ruts, grooves or potholes. The surface is a mix of sand and sealed gravel, more high-speed turf than rugged surf. Riding shotgun with me is a former racing driver named Silvio who now oversees suspension development. Since the left-right-left labyrinth is lined on both sides with tall shrubs that block the view through corners, novices need directions. We’re still on road tires, ESC is fully active, and I’m advised to use only the bottom three gears. It’s a narrow track and the grip level is deteriorating lap by lap as sand starts piling up alongside the polished loam-and-pebble racing line. Once more through the mulberry bushes in an effort to memorize the hairpin and a couple of double-apex left-handers, then the fearless Silvio gives me the final thumbs up. “Fasta! Fasta!”
Silvio’s a quick-thinking, rapid-talking co-pilot. “Sharp left, first gear, grip improves two-thirds through the corner.” (Too timid, too slow, too rough.) “Third-gear right, slow in, fast out. Lots of grip.” (Better, but still way off the pace.) “You should deactivate ESC. It helps, trust me. This car has got talent. It will be putty in your palms,” Silvio urges. I wish—but for a change, the wish comes true. There’s more wheelspin now, a more pronounced rear bias, a more blunt invitation to kick out the tail and keep it there. Bingo! I tasted blood. I want more. I want fasta.
“First, you must develop a rhythm. The rest falls into place almost by itself,” Silvio says, which means tap-dancing on the pedals, twirling the wheel, and clicking through the ratios—up and down, down and up. I’m a hero, but also a fool who forgot that pride comes before the fall. In my case, the fall is a dramatic 180-degree slide that hits the greenery side on and rips off a strip camo in the process. “No big deal. No big deal at all,” Silvio says. In excess of 188 mph is the answer, which would make it the fastest SUV on earth, a mark that speaks volumes for the aerodynamic efficiency of this thunderbolt designed by Filippo Perini, who has since moved on to Italdesign. Needless to say the ground-effect body is virtually immune to axle lift at any speed except through the cones, when it’s wheel up and nose down, when the steering could be a touch more direct, when ESC should be off for improved waltz-ability.
The Urus is the answer to the question that about 3,500 customers are expected to ask annually once production ramps up following its launch next year, which would roughly double the marque’s production output — a vehicle that opens the door for Lamborghini to the most profitable segment of a booming market. After all, impatience is instantly penalized by soaring front tire temperatures, which provoke early understeer and frustration. So it’s wait-wait-wait until way past the apex before you can give it stick again, and there’s a lot of that. Namely some 650 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, enough punch to drift through the fast fourth-gear right-hander and barrel down the long straight, where the digital speedo briefly touches 155 mph just before the braking zone begins. Although it’s eager to rev, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 powering the Urus cuts out a nanosecond before the analog readout in the head-up display hits the rev limiter.
While its eight-speed automatic is correctly spaced, it shifts up more leisurely and smoothly than most sequential wham-bang boxes. To give the Urus a distinct Italian flair, Reggiani invented the so-called tamburo ergonomics. Tamburo means drum, and this accurately describes the shape of the two semi-circular drive mode selectors positioned on either side of the starter button. On the left, there is Anima (soul), which lets you choose from six settings labeled strada, sport, corsa, sabbia (sand), terra (gravel) and neve (snow). To the right, the drum named Ego invites you to personalize the driveline, steering response, and suspension setting. It’s a neat arrangement, offbeat yet logical, a welcome complement to the notoriously smudged touchscreen.
The dashboard is a busy blend of trademark hexagonal air vents, the usual overkill carbon-fiber and leather treatment, and loud instrument graphics that glow pachinko red in Corsa mode. The remaining switchgear is arranged in a pattern similar to the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, with which the Urus shares some componentry—and most importantly, its MLB evo architecture, developed by its Volkswagen Group overlords.
The most obvious difference between the Lamborghini and its German siblings is the extended wheelbase it shares with the Bentayga. But while Bentley’s goal was to create more cabin space, the Italians used the extra inches to further enhance directional stability at speed, be it on a long straight or through fast sweepers. Despite the sloping coupe-like roof made of carbon-fiber at extra cost, there are oodles of head- and legroom in the Urus, though its standard front seats lack support in just about every direction.
Time for the first rotation: Three hot laps, one cooldown lap, back to the pits, change of cars, go for it. The tires need deflating three times. Regular adjustments are also advised to hone the driving style, define braking points, find the quickest line through corners, and trigger spot-on up- and downshifts. Since the Urus weighs more than 4,400 pounds, you’re better off in a taller gear more often than not. Why? Because every gear change costs time, and because riding the crest of the Urus’ mighty torque wave maintains the flow. Late braking is okay, but brake much too late and the car in front will rip open a depressing gap. One ill-timed mid-corner upshift invariably dents the flight path; one missed apex is all it takes to make it run ludicrously wide. But despite its intentions and dimensions, there is no doubt about it: this Lamborghini is a high-roof sports car with four doors and four seats. A look at the official Nardo lap times proves the point: on the handling circuit the Urus is every bit as fast as the Huracán.
This remarkable achievement required plenty of extra work by Reggiani’s team, especially in the chassis department. The Urus’ all-wheel drive system utilizes a Torsen center differential, enabling a wide front-to-rear torque split range, and a mechanical rear diff lock for a subtle left-right distribution. In other words, there is no brake-induced torque vectoring and no conventional self-locking center diff. Part of the package is a 48-volt system which powers the fully adjustable sway bars along with the air conditioning. Another item included in the list price that reportedly starts somewhere south of $200,000 are huge, 17-inch carbon-ceramic brake discs. Completing the high-tech DNA is an adaptive air suspension and rear-wheel steering. At this point, Urus customers have no choice in terms of engine or equipment pack, but there is a plug-in hybrid V-6 in the works for China and possibly the rest of the world later. We also expect a lighter Performante version rated at 700-plus horsepower.

Complaints? I already mentioned the seats and leisurely eight-speed autobox, and I’m going to add to the list the mildly irritating front end pitch through very fast corners, the not exactly superfast tip-in, the generous measure of brake dive and acceleration squat, the somewhat messy ergonomics, and the puerile exhaust note in Corsa mode. And its brawny twin-turbo V-8 is in no way as special as Lamborghini’s charismatic, naturally-aspirated V-10. That said the Urus has many talents, with its key assets being totally involving handling and raw, sports car-like performance all the way to the limit. Despite its genetic detriments—considerable dimensions, high center of gravity, substantial weight—the Urus hugs the road like a salamander climbing up a sheet of glass, it juggles power and torque like an orangutan brachiating between trees, its responses are as sharp as a chameleon’s tongue, and it decelerates like a serpent recoiling from an attack. In the exercise of these talents, it downs fuel at the rate of a Hummer H2 or a stretched black Escalade.
Said Hummer should do well on Nardo’s off-road setup, but it wouldn’t do as well as the Urus, and that’s a promise. After all, there are no serious climbs and descents, deep ruts, grooves or potholes. The surface is a mix of sand and sealed gravel, more high-speed turf than rugged surf. Riding shotgun with me is a former racing driver named Silvio who now oversees suspension development. Since the left-right-left labyrinth is lined on both sides with tall shrubs that block the view through corners, novices need directions. We’re still on road tires, ESC is fully active, and I’m advised to use only the bottom three gears. It’s a narrow track and the grip level is deteriorating lap by lap as sand starts piling up alongside the polished loam-and-pebble racing line. Once more through the mulberry bushes in an effort to memorize the hairpin and a couple of double-apex left-handers, then the fearless Silvio gives me the final thumbs up. “Fasta! Fasta!”
Silvio’s a quick-thinking, rapid-talking co-pilot. “Sharp left, first gear, grip improves two-thirds through the corner.” (Too timid, too slow, too rough.) “Third-gear right, slow in, fast out. Lots of grip.” (Better, but still way off the pace.) “You should deactivate ESC. It helps, trust me. This car has got talent. It will be putty in your palms,” Silvio urges. I wish—but for a change, the wish comes true. There’s more wheelspin now, a more pronounced rear bias, a more blunt invitation to kick out the tail and keep it there. Bingo! I tasted blood. I want more. I want fasta.
“First, you must develop a rhythm. The rest falls into place almost by itself,” Silvio says, which means tap-dancing on the pedals, twirling the wheel, and clicking through the ratios—up and down, down and up. I’m a hero, but also a fool who forgot that pride comes before the fall. In my case, the fall is a dramatic 180-degree slide that hits the greenery side on and rips off a strip camo in the process. “No big deal. No big deal at all,” Silvio says. If it wasn’t for the ears, my grin would go full circle.
As for how fast the Urus goes in a straight line on the skidpad’s clean tarmac, less than 3.7 seconds to 62 mph is the official word, but 3.35 seconds is what the digital in-dash readout says on location. Yes, that’s with launch control on duty, live from the grippiest piece of tarmac in the Roman Empire, and in perfect weather. If the readout is to be believed, that’s a hair quicker than the Huracán and only half a second slower than the Aventador. Maximum speed? In excess of 188 mph is the answer, which would make it the fastest SUV on earth, a mark that speaks volumes for the aerodynamic efficiency of this thunderbolt designed by Filippo Perini, who has since moved on to Italdesign. Needless to say the ground-effect body is virtually immune to axle lift at any speed except through the cones, when it’s wheel up and nose down, when the steering could be a touch more direct, when ESC should be off for improved waltz-ability.
The Urus is the answer to the question that about 3,500 customers are expected to ask annually once production ramps up following its launch next year, which would roughly double the marque’s production output — a vehicle that opens the door for Lamborghini to the most profitable segment of a booming market. It’s clear after our day at Nardo that those who can afford to buy this 650-hp SUV will be getting a splendid vehicle with rare pace and agility, one that can do things no other SUV can.

THE GREEN SUMMER By Simon Cardone
It is widely accepted that the prime time to catch big murray cod in the rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin is during the cooler months of autumn and winter. There are however plenty of big cod caught when it’s stinking hot by those willing enough to put in the time. You just need to fish smart. What follows is a few pointers that might convince you to give it a crack or even help fine tune your current summertime fishing system.
Location selection
With the heat comes increased river traffic. I don’t know about you, but having wake boats and jet skis creating a washing machine effect for miles around doesn’t do anything but cause stress and is a sure way to have you throwing in the towel sooner rather than later. If your favourite cod hole is close to holiday shacks or a large rural centre such as Mildura, it pays to hit the water early before it gets churned up and the fish go into hiding. With first light not long after 5am during the peak of summer, it is quite achievable to be on the water around 530am and putting the boat back on the trailer well before lunchtime, thus avoiding the traffic and the sweltering afternoon temperatures. Alternatively, you can start your session in the early evening and fish into the night. Night trolling can be extremely rewarding, but is not for the faint hearted. Only fish water you are extremely familiar with. Ensure your navigation lights are functional and wear your PFD at all times. Always tell someone where you are going and what time you intend to return. If you are planning an extended trip, there are still many kilometres of the Murray River that can be relatively free of the wake boat/jet ski curse. Most of these areas are located along either state forests, national parks or private rural property. Bank launching is generally the norm in these areas, so having a 4wd certainly is an advantage. No boat ramps also equals no facilities, so you will need to be well organised and prepared for everything out in the bush in the middle of summer. Always ask permission before accessing private property.
Small sticks deep water
When the surface water temperature approaches 30c, you won’t find too many cod in shallow water. With the oxygen level in this warmer water severely depleted, the cod will be firmly entrenched on deep water snags and holes. It is this reason we fish water in the 5 -10m depth range which contains suitable habitat. Trolling is the most effective way to target these fish. While big snag piles will always hold quality fish, don’t overlook the solitary broken down bits of timber and undulations that come up on your sounder from time to time. The amount of cod we have hooked off these little fished areas in the last two seasons is amazing. The best way to discover these little fish holding gems is to slightly vary your vessel’s course on each trolling run, i.e. run a little bit wider or tighter to the bank and around more obvious structure. If you have a sounder with side scan this job is made even easier for you. When we have more than one crew out fishing, we like trolling in a “conga line”. By this I mean we work the same stretch of water in tandem, which ensures that we can thoroughly work an area over in half the time and hopefully find an active fish sooner.
Surface luring
Aside from deep water trolling in the larger rivers, fishing surface lures on summer nights in some of the smaller rivers and creeks in the MDB is a highly addictive way of getting connected to a greenfish. A stretch of water that barely yields a strike on a hot summer day can come alive after dark as the big predators start to move about in search of food after sulking in their hidey holes during the day. History has shown us that before the moon rise or moonless nights are the most productive, although dusk and dawn are always worth a couple of casts. In my article “Cod that go boof in the night” which appeared in FWF Issue 131, I provided an in depth look at this style of fishing so I won’t repeat myself here, except to say you simply must try it!
Big lures only need apply
Regardless of whether you are casting or trolling, your goal should only be to catch big cod. Yes, smaller hard bodied lures in the 60 – 90mm account for their fair share of cod every season, but we have found to entice a strike from a big fish that is trying to conserve its energy during warm conditions you need to offer them a substantial meal. This is why we only run lures with a body length of 100mm or more in summer. This theory has proven itself time and time again in the last two seasons. I only have to remember back to the last two extended summer trips which showed that all fish were caught on lures 120mm or bigger while the smaller lures run by our group were left untouched after days of fishing. On those long hot days when strikes are few and far between, you can almost guarantee that when the hit comes it will be a big angry fish if you are running the largest lures you can get your hands on.
Keep your cool
Protecting yourself from the heat must be your number one priority if you are going to fish during the day. In terms of clothing, I wear a broad brimmed hat, polarised sunglasses, a long sleeved shirt, long pants and socks. A neck scarf or head sock could be added to this ensemble if desired. I find by wetting my hat and socks at regular intervals keeps me much cooler than wearing shorts and a t shirt. The mid-day sun on bare skin will cook you in no time regardless of how much 50+ sunblock you apply. A quick dip every couple of hours at the closest sand bar will reduce your core temperature instantly and give you a chance to re-charge. Drink plenty of cool water regularly and limit your intake of alcohol and fizzy drinks. I set myself a goal of drinking four litres of water each day which I find keeps me in good shape on extended trips. The beer tastes much better back at camp anyway.
Hot weather fish handling
Next to your own personal welfare should be that of the fish. There is no point practicing catch and release if you don’t pay attention to the details. During the heat of summer I modify my fish handling procedure slightly to ensure that every fish landed goes back just as healthy as they do during the cooler months. Firstly, no fish gets laid out on the floor of the boat. All cod are de-hooked in the water. If the fish is netted and the lure becomes entangled in the net, the lure is removed prior to a quick photo. The fish is only lifted for a photo once the camera is ready. If a measurement is required, we run a tape along the fish whilst it is being held by the lucky angler. Once measuring and photos are taken, the fish is speared back into the depths to get it back into the cooler oxygenated water quickly. Obviously this technique will only work if you are fishing from a boat in deep water. As always, tools at the ready: Net, camera, gloves, lip grips, tape measure, long nosed pliers, bolt cutters.

Enjoy your time on the water. I know that is stating the obvious, but sometimes it’s easy to get so caught up in the whole “I must catch a fish” aspect that some anglers get themselves into such a state that they return from a day’s fishing or a trip in worse shape than they were before they left home in the first place. Have a laugh with your mates. Enjoy the scenery. The fish will show up eventually. May your next summer be a green one.

Summer camping essentials
Being comfortable for the duration of your trip has to be number one priority in my book. If you can’t regulate your body temperature to suit the conditions you won’t be able to sleep, and this will turn a well-earned break into a nightmare. This alone is probably one of the main reasons why some people say they hate camping. Invest in a good quality swag and ensure you season it properly before you hit the river. If a tent is your preferred method of accommodation, ensure you know how to assemble/disassemble prior to departure. There are plenty of great tents on the market to suit any number of people and budgets, but you do get what you pay for. We recently upgraded to a Blackwolf Turbo tent and I am very impressed with how easy it is to assemble and the quality of the fabric and components. Having the frame attached to the tent itself is fantastic and makes it a breeze for one person to setup in the dark, even for someone who is technically challenged like me. Sleeping bags rated to -5 degrees Celsius laid out on good quality camp stretchers are our preferred sleeping arrangements. Bringing your favourite pillow from home will complete this package nicely. Having an undercover area to get out of the elements regardless of the season is a must. A gazebo is a perfect place to setup a camp kitchen, as it can be open on all sides if desired, or add the sides to help keep out rain, wind or sun. As with the tent, a gazebo that folds up compactly and requires little assembly is a must. You’re Doing Laundry Wrong! (And It’s Costing You Money)
Spin a couple knobs, press a couple buttons, add in detergent and you’re good to go, right? Wrong. Somewhere between an art and a science, doing laundry the right way is a little more complex than most people realize.
It may be tempting – especially if you’re busy – to just throw in a load on “normal” and then toss it in a dryer without thinking too much about things like fabric type, load size or the state of your machines. By doing this, however, you could be speeding up the process of wearing down your wardrobe, meaning you’ll have to buy new clothes more often. That can get expensive.
Are your bad or lazy laundry habits costing you money? Here are some common mistakes you might be making.
You Don’t Know How to Use Your Machines
While doing a basic, no-frills load of laundry may seem fairly intuitive, you could be sabotaging yourself in small but significant ways by punching in the same type of wash for every load. Taking some time to learn what all the different settings do, as well as the specifics of your particular machines, will go a long way in making sure you get the ideal wash, every single time.
Take a brief look at the instruction manuals for your washer and dryer. While they all generally function similarly, it can be useful to know exactly what specific settings on your washer and dryer do. Plus, the manual will often have its own list of laundry tips, including things that are specific to your machine.
Your Sorting Methods Are Old-Fashioned
If you’re still sorting your clothes exclusively by color, you’re doing it wrong. While it’s probably a good idea to wash your whites separately and put any dark, bleed-prone items in their own load, it can be just as important to separate your clothes by fabric type.
The reason why separating by color isn’t as crucial as it used to be is that more and more fabrics are made to be colorfast, meaning the dye is stable and won’t bleed in the wash. If you’re unsure, check the label. Observe any label that advises you to wash separately or “with like colors.” Additionally, newly bought items in a dark color should be laundered alone the first time. Blue jeans are also prone to bleeding, especially when they’re new, so make sure you don’t throw them in with your white T-shirts.
Washing in cold water can also prevent bleeding, as hot water opens up the fibers in clothes and could release dye.
How to Sort by Fabric Type
Good Housekeeping advises against putting heavier materials in the same wash as lighter ones, as heavy or coarse fabrics can wear down delicate ones over time. They’ll also take longer to dry, which means you may end up overdrying your lighter fabrics.
Fabrics that are particularly linty should be kept by themselves, as should athletic wear.
Undergarments should be washed separately, and delicates should be put in a mesh laundry bag to prevent wear in the wash. Make sure to fasten any clasps before washing. Any items you spent a lot of money on or are unsure about should probably be hand-washed, but refer to the garment’s care instructions to be sure.
When sorting, make sure to zip any zippers and unbutton any buttons. Zippers can catch on fabrics and tear them, and leaving buttons fastened can cause loosening of the threads as they get tugged on in the wash.
You’re Choosing the Wrong Settings
When selecting settings for a particular load, keep in mind that the less stress you put on your clothes, the better. That means choosing the shortest cycle with the lowest temperature needed to do the job. This goes for both the washer and the dryer.
Washing Machine Settings
While newer washing machines might use a sensor to determine load size, if you’re using an older machine you may have to input this yourself. Check the manual, but as a rule of thumb, a small load will fill up the drum about a quarter of the way, medium will fill half, and large will fill three-quarters. Don’t pack your washer completely full; make sure the clothes have room to tumble freely.
When in doubt, use cold water. It’s more cost-effective and is generally safer for your fabrics, as hot water will cause fading over time. Most liquid detergents can effectively be used in water of any temperature.
If you need to sanitize something or have an item that is especially dirty, using hot water might be more beneficial. In general, however, cold water will do just as good a job cleaning your clothes.
Choosing your cycle will be a little more specific to your machine, as they all display these settings a little differently, so check the manual. If you have a permanent press setting, this will be a good go-to for most of your laundry. This option may also be represented as “fast/slow” on your machine. Choose delicate (slow/slow) for more fragile fabrics. Only use regular (fast/fast) for heavier items, such as towels.
Dryer Settings
Drying your clothes properly has a little more to it than most people realize. The washing machine requires a lot of input to get your load washed how you like it. With a dryer, you can easily set it to high heat (or whatever your machine’s equivalent setting is), press start and walk away knowing that when you return, your clothes will be completely dry and toasty warm.
As nice as it may be to drape yourself in a warm blanket fresh out of the dryer, drying your items on high heat can cause fading, shrinking and general wearing down of the fabric.
A medium-heat setting will be the ideal choice for the average person’s daily wardrobe. For anything delicate, choose a low-heat setting, and use high heat for bulky stuff like towels.
For bedding, stick with low heat. This will prevent your sheets from shrinking and cut down on wrinkles.
Don’t Be Afraid to Air Dry
If you’re like the average laundry-doer and use your dryer indiscriminately, you’re probably overdrying a lot of your wardrobe. You may want to scale back on your use of the high-heat settings, or even consider air-drying some of your clothes, especially if you have stuff that’s prone to shrinking or you wear a lot of athleisure.
Fabrics that hold smell, especially gym clothes or yoga pants, should either be air-dried or put on the lowest heat setting. Bras should always be air-dried, as the dryer can wear down the elastic. Air-drying jeans will prevent them from fading over time.
You Don’t Know How to Work a Proper Wash Cycle
Knowing how to properly execute a wash cycle is crucial, because it’s the only thing that stands between you and having to wear dirty or stained clothes. Aside from settings and sorting, there are a few more things you’ll have to contend with if you want to ensure the longevity of your clothing.
Detergent
A common laundry mistake is using too much detergent. With unclear labels and hard-to-read measuring caps, it can be easier to overpour just to be on the safe side. But when it comes to laundry detergent, using too much can be just as bad as using too little. According to CNN.com, excess detergent can actually hold onto the dirt from your clothes and get caught in areas that don’t rinse as easily, like under your shirt collar.
Try using half the amount you’re used to and adjust based on how your clothes come out. You may find that you need fewer suds than you thought, saving you money on detergent. However, if you have hard water, you may need to use more soap to get your clothes clean.
Make sure you’re buying the right type of detergent for your washer, a not as high-efficiency soap in a high-efficiency machine can create too many suds for the machine to operate properly.
Fabric Softener
If you’re someone who is a devout user of fabric softener, make sure you’re aware of when you should and shouldn’t use it. Using fabric softener with towels actually reduces their absorbency. It also does a good job of trapping odor in your athletic wear.
For a natural fabric softener and odor reducer, try adding a half cup of white vinegar to your rinse cycle.
Treating Stains
Most stains need to be dealt with as soon as possible to give you the best chance of removing them.
Treat the stain right away. If you’re not near your laundry room when it happens, dab the spot with water to remove any excess stain.
When you’re ready to launder the stained item, first pour a little bit of detergent directly on the spot and gently rub it in. Then wash in cold water.
There are plenty of guides on how to remove different types of stains, so make sure to take a look if you’re dealing with something specific like wine or cooking oil.
If something comes out of the wash and it’s still stained, don’t put it in the dryer. The heat will set the stain and you’ll likely be stuck with a permanent ink splotch on your favorite pair of jeans.
You’re Not Treating Your Clothes Right
Most of the fabrics that make up your daily wardrobe are relatively delicate and will start to show damage over time if you don’t take proper care of them, so be aware of how you treat your clothes in and out of the washing machine.
Washing Too Often
There’s a spectrum as to how people approach laundry, with most people falling somewhere in between two polar opposites: people who wash every single item of clothing after each use, and people who do the “sniff test” on any previously worn pieces they have draped on various pieces of furniture in their bedroom. While the obsessive washers may find their more relaxed counterparts to be lazy and unhygienic, the sniff testers may be on to something.
Every time you put clothes in the wash, you’re putting stress on the fabric. To minimize this, most items of clothing can actually be worn a few times before they need to be washed. Not only will this save your clothes, but you’ll spend less on detergent as well.
Obviously, if something gets stained, you’re going to want to treat it and get it in the wash right away, regardless of how many times you’ve worn it. Same goes for stuff that soaked up a lot of sweat or other smells, like gym clothes or the sweater you wore to a bonfire.
Don’t wash jeans too much, as they can become worn out and faded. Try for once every four or five wears.
Typically, lighter pieces like cotton T-shirts should be washed once every one or two wears, depending on how much you sweat. More substantial materials like dress shirts can be worn a day or two more than that.
Underwear needs to be washed after every single wear, without exception, as do socks.
As long as you hang your bath towels, you can generally get three to five uses out of them. Bed sheets need to be washed every two weeks.
Bathing Suit Care
Ever wonder why your swimsuit starts to look faded after only a couple trips to the beach? Sunscreen may be the culprit, as it contains ingredients that can, over time, break down the fabric of your suit. Spending a lot of time in pools doesn’t help either, as chlorine is harsh on fabric and can cause fading.
Because of this, swimsuits need to be washed after every use. However, you generally shouldn’t put your swimsuit in the washing machine or dyer, so you’ll have to hand wash. The exception to this is swim trunks, which should be ok to machine wash.
Before washing the suit, you’ll want to rinse it off as soon as possible. Then, fill a sink with cold water and a tablespoon of liquid detergent and swish the suit in the water. Rinse and press the fabric gently to get out excess water (don’t wring it) and lay it to dry.
You’re Too Rough
Don’t squeeze or wring out wet clothes, as this stretches the fibers and can ruin the shape of your garment. Instead, lay the garment down and press on it to remove excess water.
When you’re trying to remove a stain, don’t scrub the spot too hard.
Take care when hanging items to be air-dried. Putting a heavy, wet sweater on a hanger to dry can cause it to sag in the shoulders. Bra straps can be similarly stretched in this way. If you have the room, laying out your air-dry items can be a better alternative.
You Don’t Take Care of Your Machines
Even the machine that does the washing needs to be washed every once in a while.
Failing to maintain your washer and dryer can end up costing you money, as a dirty washing machine can leave your clothes smelling mildewy and gunk in your dryer can lengthen dry time, wreaking havoc on your electric bill.
To avoid a mildewy smell, leave the door of your washing machine ajar when you aren’t using it. Every six months or so, run an empty load in your washing machine with hot water and white vinegar instead of detergent. If you have a front-loading machine, you may want to occasionally wipe down the seal around the opening with white vinegar, as mildew can accumulate there.
To keep your dryer in tip-top shape, make sure you remove lint from the filter after every use. At least once a year, clean the exhaust vent; do this more if you do a lot of laundry. This step is crucial, as lint is highly flammable, and buildup can cause a dryer fire.
You’re Being Energy Inefficient
Extending the life of your clothes isn’t the only way to save yourself money on laundry. Dryers especially use a lot of electricity, so finding ways to make laundry day more energy efficient can help cut down on your electric bill.
Using cold water will save you money and will generally get your clothes just as clean as warm or hot water. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, even using warm water instead of hot can cut a load’s energy use in half.
Make the most of each cycle by washing full loads.
Instead of dryer sheets, use dryer balls. Not only do they reduce static, but they separate your clothes, so more air permeates them, shortening dry time. Plus, film from dryer sheets can form a buildup on your filter that reduces air circulation, meaning it can take longer for your clothes to dry. If you insist on using dryer sheets, make sure you scrub the filter once a month to remove buildup.
