Hello! I’m not sure you’re the right person to be asking but as someone not from Turkey, are you able to explain the social context of Uc Kurus? Like obviously I’m aware that the Romani are discriminated against, but why exactly? And also, how do they know that someone is Romani? Is it purely a looks-based thing?? Would be super interested to know more about the background!!
Tbh I'm also not sure that I'm the right person. I can only express my thoughts on this matter.
It's not a secret that the Romanies were treated unfairly at all times, including ours. They were subjected to persecution, injustice, oppression. Children weren't allowed to study, adults weren't allowed to work just because the media formed a preconceived stereotype about these people - that all Romanies are criminals. Murderers, crookes, thieves and rapists. So most of people began to fear them. This is where all the hatred came from. And because of unfounded myths, their poverty, illiteracy and all the oppression by the state and people many spheres of life are closed for them. They're not protected by the law what makes them defenseless against outrage of law enforcement agencies and officials. There was no one to defend them because such thing was always severely punished and they couldn't defend themselves because of their illiteracy again. Therefore, they can only count on each other's help and their community independence. This isolation from the outside world doesn't allow them to integrate into the modern economy, engage in entrepreneurship, receive education and highly qualified work. So it turns out to be a vicious circle.
I don't know about Turkey but there is such a problem in my country too and as far as I know a lot of countries treat Romanies that way, but I can only say for myself. So when we were little everyone around was saying that we shouldn't come close to them, shouldn't look into their eyes, much less talk. That they will curse us, hurt us, rob us, steal us or kill us. Just imagine what these words could make to innocent little kid, of course we believed in everything they said and ran away screaming if saw Romanies. Then in adulthood everyone decides for himself of course what he thinks about it, but still this was awful.
I think it's a good thing that the show touched this issue. Perhaps public opinion about Romanies will change. Well, I'm not saying that all of them are innocent but an entire nation can't be so mistreated because of actions of a few people. Tbh this applies to all nations and people in general.
What about how they are defined, I can be completely wrong, but I think this is really bc of their look, all the jewelry and etc.
