In 2005, American Pulitzer Prize nominated war photographer, Chris Hondros, travelled to Iraq to cover the current war. On 18 January, 2005, he was in Tal Afar when he witnessed a car failing to stop at a U.S. checkpoint. The U.S. Soldiers feared that the occupants of the car were suicide bombers and automatically opened fire on the car, killing both parents and one of their five children. The photograph above shows 5-year-old Samar Hassan splattered in the blood of her parents and sibling. Chris Hondros later said:  “Almost every soldier in Iraq has been involved in some sort of incident like that or another, I would say. Their attitude about it was grim, but it wasn’t the end of their world.” In 2011, Chris Hondros was killed by a mortar attack while photographing the Libyan civil war.

In that sense, the war in Gaza and a possible war in southern Lebanon are no exceptions. But as FAIR documented during the previous Israeli military operation against Gaza, Israel has a long history of targeting Palestinian journalists, as well as harassing foreign journalists and human rights activists entering the country. Over the summer, the International Federation of Journalists reported that “several journalists have been directly targeted by Israeli snipers as they were reporting on Israel’s large-scale military operation in Jenin.” Inside Israel, the situation for journalists is relatively safer, but the far-right government has—like authoritarian governments in Poland and Hungary—attacked journalists and the ability to critically cover institutions in power. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2019 accused the owners of Israel’s Channel 12 of committing a “terror attack against democracy” for reporting on the corruption charges against him. In 2020, Netanyahu indicated that “Channel 13 journalist Raviv Drucker should be arrested and jailed” for airing “recordings of Netanyahu crony Shaul Elovich and his wife, which demonstrated how they sought to tilt news coverage in the prime minister’s favor.” Galit Distel-Atbaryan, who recently resigned from her role as public diplomacy minister, reportedly said this summer that she wanted the “authority to deny press credentials to foreign journalists critical of Israel”.

Thank you so much for answering my question earlier about " grevena folk costume ". My grandpa is from Aidonia which is in Grevena but its impossible to find information online since i do not know greek. I am now one step closer to knowing about my ancestors culture 🩷🫶🏻 this might be a stretch but do you know anything about Aidonia specifically? All i know is that there is some ancient tombs nearby the village, which has been looted from its treasures. Anyway thanks 🥹

I didn't know about Aidonia to be honest because it is a pretty small village but I gathered some general information about it!

Aidonia is a small semi-mountainous agricultural village of Grevena in a 760m altitude.

The village was previously called Stizahion (some idiomatic phrase associated with the walnut tree lumbering in the region) and must have been founded around 1692. It was renamed to Aidonia, after the many nightingales that can be heard in the area.

During the Ottoman period, the village was a chiflik, meaning a piece of land which belonged to an Ottoman military officer and where poor farmers could settle and cultivate the land with most profits going to the lord in exchange for some protection. In 1862, the villagers gathered money and bought the land from the lord.

It is very very small. It now has around 53 permanent inhabitants, but the population doubles in the summer. In its heyday it might have had around 500 people.

Athanasios Broufas (1850 - 1896) was raised and lived up to his adulthood in Aidonia. He was a loved Makedonomahos (= Macedonian fighter) in the region. (aka Greek Macedonian fighting for the liberation of Macedonia from the Ottoman Empire) He sold all his fortune for the Macedonian Struggle and he later fell in the battle. He had also built the old school of the village. There is a bust of his in the village's main square.

I found an old list of all the voting male members of the village, dating from 1914. Perhaps you will find your grandpa's ancestors here! The list also includes their birthyear and profession.

Boy yes indeed -poulos is the most common surname ending in Greece but your village has blown this out of proportion XD

Unfortunately, I couldn't find more about the ancient tombs you say. Perhaps there is not much knowledge around them because they have been looted. However, in general more and more ancient findings are unearthed lately in the area of Grevena.
