Weekly Journal 1 - Returning Home

I decided to return to my hometown located in Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang this week after taking some time off from college. It has been a while, and I missed my family dearly. However, the journey home overall was last minute. Other than longing for the comforts of my hometown, I also had a few matters to attend to. Recently, I’ve received an offer for a Tertiary Education Sponsorship Programme (TESP) from MARA. It’s an offer that I cannot refuse. If I were to accept this sponsorship, I’ll be able to lift my parent’s burden from paying for my college tuition fees. But there’s a catch, I must complete the documents required within two weeks. I have no choice but to collaborate with my fellow classmates to be able to convince our lecturers to postpone their classes. This is to ensure that we’ll have enough time to receive the documents necessary from our parents, especially to those who live far away from the state of Selangor. Furthermore, for my own convenience, I booked a train ticket which is incredibly pricey. Every child needs a loving home and the resources to develop his or her full potential. Many of us take this for granted but, for some, this is just a dream.

Many charitable organisations in Malaysia provide for the underprivileged in different ways. The 12th-century philosopher Maimonides wrote that the most meritorious act when doing charity is to teach the disadvantaged a skill so that they can be self-sufficient for life.

MySkills Foundation was started in 2011 to provide youths unable to complete their schooling, from single-parent and dysfunctional families, a second chance in life by offering training for blue-collar jobs. Talking to friends, I realise that many are not aware of its existence. To date, about 800 youths have received training and found meaningful jobs – and so avoided a life of crime.

I was told that the movie Kabali was inspired by and its storyline changed by MySkills. Kabali’s director Pa Ranjith visited and was inspired and impressed by the campus. In 2015, the Malaysian movie Jagat was co-produced by MySkills; several of its students were actors in the movie which went on to win the Best Movie award that year at the Malaysia Film Festival.

These boys are applying what they learnt about air-conditioner repair, at MySkills Foundation.

My wife and I spent a fruitful and informative morning this Merdeka Day, visiting MySkills new 12ha complex in Kalumpang, Hulu Selangor, one-and-a-half hours drive from Petaling Jaya for their first open day.

With the main range in the background, the campus looked very serene. The foresight and brilliant planning of MySkills directors, enabled two disused godowns to be converted into lecture rooms and a sports centre (one donor has pledged to furnish it fully with sporting equipment). A hostel can hold 120 students.

The students grow vegetables organically. Both for health as well as economic reasons, students are provided a vegetarian diet.

Parents are allowed to bring non-vegetarian dishes when they come to visit.

A football field and basketball court are part of the sports facilities available. In another corner of the campus, tropical rainforest trees are planted both for the student’s education as well as to add to the general ambience.

The courses taught include mechatronics, electrical wiring, welding, air-conditioner repair, plumbing, culinary arts, corporate secretarial studies and hair-dressing. Twenty-one full-time teachers work on campus. Their work is supplemented by more than 100 dedicated volunteers who provide classes which include English, Mathematics, Science, Moral and spiritual classes embodying all religions.

A volunteer barber currently coaches two students twice a week. A football coach provides his expertise every Sunday. Aided by a Chinese Malaysian volunteer, students harvest, dry and grind the leaves of the moringa trees (more than 100, initially planted for self-consumption) to be made into capsules; these are sold.

I asked about a day in the life of a MySkills student. They awaken at 6.30am and do two hours of farming, then have breakfast. After this, they have classes from 9am to 1pm, following the Malaysian government schools competency syllabus.

Students play games between 5pm and 7pm. Dinner is served at 8pm, following which they relax by preparing for a concert (songs, dances) held every Saturday (I am told all look forward to this).

It’s lights off at 10pm.

No handphones are allowed. Selected movies are shown on television every weekend.

We met and talked with several energetic students who looked contented and at home.

There are many inspiring accounts of transformation (all names have been changed):

Siew Ling joined MySkills last year, when she was 18. She could hardly speak English. Having lost her father at the age of 14, she was often absent from school and failed to complete her SPM. Now, after 18 months, she is conversant in English, good in secretarial work and plans to do a diploma in digital marketing.

Balan grew up in a family of 10 siblings and often went hungry. His father abandoned them, and his mother did odd jobs. Leaving school at the age of 14, he joined neighbourhood friends and frequently got drunk.

Sent to MySkills by his mother, he graduated in Electrical Wiring with a National Skills Certificate. He has now enrolled his younger brother in MySkills to do a course under his supervision.

I interviewed the soft-spoken founder/director of MySkills, S. Pasupathy, the driving force behind the organisation. His own life struggles inspired him to set up MySkills with the help of like-minded friends. He told me that he learnt about the beauty of and joy in giving, doing service and being dedicated, from people who helped him from a young age.

Pasupathy’s father’s earnings as a boilerman were inadequate to feed his seven children. Young Pasupathy would go to school after a measly breakfast of two thosai and thin brewed tea. There was no money for breakfast. A friend Lim Woon Kai, without being asked, gave him money for the canteen every day throughout his secondary school.

Lim is now retired and Pasupathy is still in contact with him. Lim taught him the joy of giving.

Coming from a Tamil-medium school, Pasupathy had difficulty understanding subjects taught in English. The nuns at the Good Shepherd Convent coached him in basic English and taught him the beauty behind service to the poor and needy.

Kirkby-trained Govin, a dedicated teacher, was Pasupathy’s mathematics instructor. He gave him free mathematics tuition twice a week, which helped him improve his grades. The values learnt from Govin formed the basic principles that Pasupathy uses to transform students at Myskills Foundation.

Pasupathi’s Form 6 studies were sponsored by the Dr Rama Subbiah scholarship. During this time, he stayed at the Vivekananda ashram. He tells me that his desire to give back to society started here.

After Form Six, Pasupathy won a JPA scholarship to pursue tertiary studies. He graduated four years later with a degree in Chemical Technology from UKM.

He then worked in the income tax department for six-and-a-half years.

And with his savings, he went to England to study law, working part-time in KFC, restaurants and driving a cab.

He completed his law degree in two years and returned home. He has been running his own law firm for more than 20 years, and takes on about 10 pro bono cases every year, mainly involving juvenile offenders. He tells me several of these are referred by magistrates who feel the juvenile has a defendable case.

Pasupathy was a member of the Educational, Welfare and Research Foundation Malaysia (EWRF) from 1995 and its president in 2006.

Whilst in EWRF, he noted a need to give “at-risk youths” a second chance in life. One day, over a meal at Grand City Restaurant with friends, including Dr Shanmuga Siva, he discussed the need for a foundation for these special group of youths.

Nine months later, MySkills was born. The rest is history.

The estimated cost to run the centre is about RM150,000 a month (students do not pay fees). Currently, the centre is dependent on donations from corporate organisations and individuals but they hope to be self-sufficient in five to six years’ time.

Are International Schools Worth The Price?

That Malaysian parents are demanding premium education despite the hefty price tag is a fact. The Performance Management and Delivery Unit found that about 45,050 students are enrolled in international schools in the country. Locals number 25,014 while foreigners make up 20,036 of the overall international-school student population in the country. Also, there are about 106 international schools in Malaysia, surpassing the target set by Putrajaya of 87 schools by 2020, despite the country ranked the eighth-most expensive for international education. But why are Malaysian parents flocking to international schools when, ultimately, they will be financially burdened early on into their children’s education (there’s college to think about, too)?

A well-rounded education

John (not his real name) opted for an international education as the lessons were taught in English and it provided a more-rounded education. “Delivery is expected to be more engaging and more thinking skills are required. Parents are expected to be more involved with schools on their children’s development,” he told iMoney in an email interview. On what drove him towards premium education, he said public schools did not focus on English but more on rote learning and an exam-heavy curriculum. “Quality and method of overall delivery by teachers are left to chance,” he added. He spends about RM60,000 a year on fees alone and attributes to a raft of financial manoeuvres such as investments and savings as some of the ways to cope with the exorbitant fees. Aside from saving in advance, he prioritises education over non-essentials, this he says has enabled him to fund his child at Desa Park City International School, a choice he and his wife made after considering affordability and household income.

Flip-flop policymaking

John is not the only one critical of the state of the local curriculum.  Another parent who decided to remain anonymous also shared with iMoney that the reasons she opted for an international school was due to the flip-flop over the use of Malay or English for maths and science subjects. Education lobbyist Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) told iMoney that when the government killed off its PPSMI policy, or the teaching and learning of science and mathematics in English, some parents took their children out of the national school as they felt the decision was politically motivated. “They were concerned that the kids are used as pawns in a political game, and they were not prepared to gamble on their future. The primary years are very important. It sets the stage for the future.” Aside from poor policymaking, PAGE said many parents within the group opted for an international school due to the use of English which provides a smoother transition to a university of their children’s choice and capability.

Premium with a pinch of salt

The group says not all private or international schools are better than the top public schools, but clarifies that the success of these schools are mainly because of better quality students, citing natural learning aptitude and concerned parents, not the education system or teachers. Parents like Abby certainly relate to this. In an email interview, she recalled the horrors her son endured during his time in an international school, a choice she made after recognising her son’s academic potential. “We were somehow prompted into this direction when our son excelled at two different schools’ written assessments and interviews despite just turning five then. We thought it may be worthwhile to just let him at least learn something at the accelerated level that was proposed.” Things didn’t turn out as planned. “We decided to pull him out of the international school as he was bullied and the management just continued ignoring it.” She added that her son was the victim of favouritism and blamed the overall low-quality education as among the push factors that prompted her to seek alternatives. “The schools cut costs while trying to increase face value to charge fees by hiring ‘unqualified’ foreigners who were cheaper but can barely even communicate in proper English, whether it was written or spoken. “Besides that, many are also hiring young, fresh, inexperienced graduates who were not even passionate in teaching,” she said, adding that she ultimately found a suitable academy for her son after trying out various learning centres and home-schooling. “It’s a big change from attending a proper international school but it still provided an avenue for him to be among friends in a holistic academic environment. “Not all facilities are within the compound but it’s fine as he has learned to adjust and adapt well anywhere he goes,” she said.

What next?

According to PAGE, a hybrid of home-school and national school would be affordable options for those seeking an internationally recognised education such as the IGCSE. “Students attend home-school or private tuition for IGCSCE and at the same time, attend national school. IGCSE is seen as a stable option and not volatile or politically tempered with as SPM,” the group said. It added that parents with more spending power could consider a private school with local syllabus as it has smaller classes, handpicked teachers and voluntary activities. John believes parents should weigh the benefits and affordability as alternatives beyond an international school are aplenty. “Consider what the future education path is like after secondary,” he said. Jillian (not her real name), a real estate agent from Selangor, says that every schooling system has its strengths and weaknesses. “It depends on what is suitable for our kid and what we are looking for and what we can afford. But we won’t spend 100% of our savings on our kid’s primary education as they have a long way to go,” she added. But Abby had more cautionary advice for parents consider sending their children to international schools. “I am sorry to tell most parents that the mushrooming mid-tier international schools (those within the RM20,000 to RM60,000 bracket) that cater to middle-income families are not worth the price you need to pay. “You are better off sending your kids to local primary schools especially Chinese schools or the Wawasan ones or some of the better-managed public schools I have heard of like the one in Taman Tun Dr Ismail,” she said. For example, admission to a top school could cost you an additional RM50,000 and above for miscellaneous charges. It is also normal of schools to ask some form of financial commitment such as an acceptance deposit. And what is early? Possibly even as soon as your child is born. Factor in the extras Now, an international school education is more than just tuition fees. Uniforms are usually bespoke and there are school trips (think: RM100,000 ski trips to Switzerland), enrichment classes and even sports fees and other extracurricular activities that cost way more than in public schools. Practice family planning and budgeting Parents might be able to send their first child to an international school but when child number two or three comes along, they are stuck.
