First Day
Sunlight filtered in through the dark curtains blocking the windows as Karina sat up in her bed and threw the blankets off of her, her heart already racing in excitement. For a few years now she had been home-schooled by her parents and a few of their neighbors, but things were finally going to change. After a few months of extensive training and test taking, today was finally going to be her first day at U.A. and to say that she was excited would be an understatement. She got up, quickly tore off the clothes she had worn to bed and then threw on her school uniform as fast as she possibly could before rushing out of her room. She ran to the bathroom and brushed her long crimson hair and pulled some of it up into two space buns, one on either side of her head while leaving the rest of her hair down. She quickly brushed her teeth and once she was done, she rushed downstairs, almost colliding into her younger brother as he rounded the corner at the bottom of the steps. “Watch out Muroma!” She yelped slightly as she skidded to a halt on the bottom step, almost tipping over and falling on him. The younger boy looked up at his older sister and grinned widely. His half asleep look was quickly replaced with that of complete excitement as he remembered why she was in such a hurry. “You’re going to school?! Make sure you meet all the Pro Heroes! I want all the details and stuff when you get home!” Karina giggled at his excitement and nodded her head in agreement. “I will. I will. Where’s dad?” Muroma shrugged his shoulders slightly. “I think he already left for work and mom still isn’t home yet.” Karina frowned slightly. “Oh. I figured he would want to see me or something before I left.” Muroma could see the disappointment on his sisters face so he got up on the step with her and hugged her tightly. “I’m proud of you for getting into U.A. Kari. You’re gonna do great! Now go kick some butt, and don’t forget to ask for All Might’s autograph!” Karina hugged her brother back, grateful that at least he was showing how happy he was for her. With another light giggle, Karina finally let go of her brother and stepped down off the step. “I’ll see you when I get home and I promise to give you all the details.” She kissed his forehead and then headed to the door where her shoes and backpack were waiting for her. After slipping on her shoes and throwing on her backpack, Karina headed out of her house, closing and locking the front door behind her.
It was almost an hour walk to the school, but with how excited Karina was to get there, she managed to cut the time in half, her legs carrying her there much faster than normal. The nerves started settling in the closer she got to the school but it didn’t slow her down one bit. She had been there a few days before to get her schedule and tour the school before her official first day, but this was it. This was the day she would be joining class 1-A. They were all second years now and she had seen them go through so much just through all the media and televised events. She couldn’t help but admire them considering everything they had been a part of and gone through, and that was only the things that had been televised or was made known to the public. However,  now she was about to meet them and learn and grow with them as a classmate. Her crimson hair fell down to her lower back, swaying with every step she took as she approached the school, walking through the main gate and heading up to the doors. She walked in and made her way towards the classrooms, remembering vaguely which route would get her there the quickest. She looked around as she made her way through the school, taking in everything as she went. Despite being there a few days earlier to tour the school, she had been so distracted by what Mr. Aizawa had been telling her during the tour that she hadn’t really paid attention to her surroundings. She was nearing the classrooms and her golden eyes spotted the sign above the door and after walking up to it, she froze and stared at the handle for a moment. You can do this Karina. You’ve come all this way, you can’t stop at the door. Just knock. She took a deep breath and lifted her right hand that she had closed into a fist and knocked on the door three times, unconsciously holding her breath as she waited for some kind of response. “Class, sit down and be quiet. We’ve got a new student so behave yourselves.” She could hear Aizawa through the door and she couldn’t help the small smile that formed on her lips. Before she knew it, the door was pulled open and she was looking up at Tenya Iida who she recognized from a few different news reports she had seen. He gave her a warm smile as he extended his hand to her. “Greetings! I’m class representative Tenya Iida! Welcome!” A bright smile came to her lips as she took his hand and shook it gently. “Thank you.” “Iida, take your seat please.” Aizawa sighed from his spot at the front of the class, standing behind his desk. Iida was quick to return to his desk and Karina closed the door behind her before walking up and standing at the front of the class near Aizawa. He gave her a small nod before looking back at the class. “Class, this is Karina. She’s a home-schooled transfer student.” He looked back at Karina. “The class was just in the middle of studying for a test they have coming up. I’m sure one of them would be happy to help you study. We’re not far from where you left off at home.” Karina smiled and nodded her head. “Thank you Mr. Aizawa.” He sat down at his desk, getting to work at looking at some papers that were scattered across it.
When Karina turned to face the class, there was a girl already right in front of her. Pink skin, horns, and black and gold eyes. She knew exactly who she was, but before she could say anything, the girl was already introducing herself. “Hey! Welcome to U.A.! I’m Mina Ashido! Come sit with me!” Karina smiled and nodded her head eagerly. “Sure.” She followed Mina to her desk and sat down in the extra chair Mina had pulled up next to her as she looked around at the class. Some of the students were focused on their work, one was sleeping, who she remembered as Denki Kaminari, and a few others were walking towards her and Mina. “Wow! You were home-schooled and you got into U.A.? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before. That’s really impressive! I’m Eijiro Kirishima, the manliest one here. It’s nice to meet you.” Karina smiled up at him and nodded her head. “It’s nice to meet you too Eijiro. Yeah, it definitely wasn’t an easy thing to do, but I somehow managed it.” She let out a small chuckle as another face joined them. “Bonjour mademoiselle. You must have a dazzling quirk to get here from being home-schooled.” He struck a pose as he said the word dazzling and Karina couldn’t help but giggle again. “Yoga Aoyama right? It’s nice to meet you, and yeah, I guess you could say that.” He gasped. “You know my name?” She gave a small nod and blushed lightly while rubbing the back of her neck. “Honestly, I know all of your names. I watched you all during the sports festival last year and everything else that was basically televised that you were all apart of. You’re all so inspiring and I’m glad I can be here with you.” Mina squealed happily next to her. “That’s so sweet! Well now you’ll be with us instead of watching from home. Isn’t that exciting?” Karina nodded eagerly again. “Really exciting!” Yet another face joined them and if she remembered correctly, he was Hanta Sero. “So what is it? What’s your quirk?” He asked her excitedly. “Oh um, I can shape-shift. Basically I can turn into any animal.” There were a few ‘ooo’s’ and ‘cool’s’, but the discussion was interrupted by Aizawa. “You’re supposed to be helping her study. Not bombarding her with questions. Everyone sit down and get back to work.” Everyone reluctantly went back to their seats and Karina and Mina spent the rest of class chatting and studying. Once class was over, Karina was walking out of the class with Mina when Kyoka Jiro joined them, smiling at Karina. “Hey! If you’re new, do they have a dorm set up for you yet? You’ll be living with us right?” Karina smiled back at her and nodded her head. “Yeah, I’ll be living in the dorms with you guys. I just don’t have my stuff moved in yet. I have to do it on my own because I came in so late and my parents are always working. Until I get everything moved in, I guess I’ll just be staying at home.” Kirishima walked up to them after overhearing what they were talking about. “I can help you move your stuff in if you want.” Sero, Bakugo and Kaminari were right behind him and Kaminari pushed himself right up between Jiro and Karina, winking at Karina playfully. “You can definitely count me in to help too. I’m always up for helping pretty girls.” Jiro rolled her eyes at his shameless flirt while Karina blushed and nudged him playfully. “You sure you won’t be too busy napping?” She teased, referring to his nap during class. Kaminari chuckled and shook his head. “Definitely not. I’ll be there.” He looked back at Bakugo and Sero. “You guys wanna help too?” Karina looked back at them as well and smiled when Sero nodded his head and agreed to also help. Bakugo, however, rolled his eyes. “I’ve got better things to do than help some extra.” Karina arched an eyebrow at him and was about to turn around and confront him, but Mina saw the look in her eyes, so she quickly looped her arm with Karina’s and started walking faster. “Let’s get to our next class before we’re late!”
The rest of the school day went by pretty normally. Karina spent most of her time with Mina and Jiro and throughout the rest of the day, she was able to officially meet the rest of her classmates and teachers. All the nerves that Karina had at the beginning of the day were long gone and she felt more welcome than she had anticipated. After classes had ended, she went with the rest of her class to the dorms where the girls were all too eager to give her a tour. Earlier in the day, Karina had spoken to Mr. Aizawa to find out which dorm room was going to be hers, so when she got to the dorms, she was eager to check it out. When she arrived at her dorm room near the end of the tour, she inspected it and tried to figure out how much of her stuff she'd be able to bring with her and what she’d have to leave at home. Once the tour was over, Karina decided to stay a bit longer, figuring it would be helpful to get some of her classwork done with the others before heading back home. Karina, Momo, Todoroki, Mina, Jiro, Shoji, and Ojiro were all sitting at one of the longer tables in the common area, working on classwork together. Momo was mostly helping Karina, but the others would chime in and also help here and there. Before it got too late though, Karina packed up her things into her backpack and reluctantly started to head for the door. “Thank you guys so much for today. I should get home before it gets too late though.” Mina frowned. “Awww already? You sure you can’t stay here?” Karina shook her head with a small frown that matched Mina’s. “I don’t have anywhere to sleep and I also didn’t bring another uniform. Maybe I can stay tomorrow and then this weekend we can move my stuff in.” Momo walked over, giving Karina a hug. “Sounds like a plan. I’m sure you can sleep with one of us tomorrow.” Karina hugged her back and nodded in agreement. She spotted Mineta behind Momo, waving his hand in the air. “I volunteer my room for her to stay in.” Karina narrowed her golden eyes at him. “Not in a million years, grape.” Mina rolled her eyes and pushed Mineta out of the way. “You can stay in my room with me tomorrow. Just don’t forget to bring an extra set of clothes. If you come by early enough in the morning, you can drop your stuff off in my room so you don’t have to carry them around all day.” Karina listened, her smile growing bigger as she became more and more excited. “Sounds perfect! I’ll come by in the morning then.” After saying her good-byes, Karina made her way out of the dorms, out of the school, and towards her home. Unlike on the way there, leaving the school to walk home took as long as it usually did, but the entire time she walked she thought about her day. She thought about all the people she had met, even the ones outside of her class, and she thought about all the friends she had already made. She couldn’t help but be happy at how welcoming almost everyone had been. It had been such a long time since she had been in a school where she wasn’t bullied, so being around so many people who welcomed her with open arms was a pleasant surprise. It worried her though, what would happen if they found out who she was, but she pushed those thoughts and worries out of her mind for the time being.
As she approached her house, her younger brother ran outside after having spotted her from the window. “Karina’s home! How was it?! Did you meet All Might?! Was he cool? What about Eraser Head?! Did you meet a bunch of heroes?” Karina laughed and caught her brother as he jumped at her, lifting him up and throwing him over her shoulder. “You know, you’re getting too big for this. Soon I’m not even gonna be able to pick you up Muroma.” He wiggled in his sisters grasp. “You’re not answering me!” She rolled her eyes and carried him into the house. “I’ll tell you everything while we eat, okay?” Karina put her brother down and he rushed to the dinner table while she closed the front door behind her. She made her way into the house, taking her shoes off at the door before she hurried up to her room to drop off her backpack and change into more comfortable clothes. Once she was done, she headed back downstairs where her father and her brother were sitting at the dinner table. “Where’s mom?” Karina asked as she took her place across the table from her brother who was shoveling food into his mouth. “She’s getting some rest before she has to go back into work in a few hours. Muroma, slow down.” Their father sighed slightly as he looked at his son and then turned his attention back to Karina, smiling as he spoke. “How was your first day pumpkin? Sorry I couldn’t see you off this morning. I had a meeting I had to get to.” Karina waved a hand dismissively while shaking her head slightly. “It’s fine dad. I figured there was something important happening at work, but my first day was great. Everyone was so kind.” Karina tucked some hair behind her ears that were each pierced three times and began eating while her father sighed in relief. “Good. I’m glad everyone was nice to you. You know that was your mother and I’s main concern with you going to that school.” While Karina ate, she slowed down slightly, a nervous look on her face. “Well, they don’t exactly know who I am.” “What do you mean they don’t know Karina?” Her father questioned with a serious tone. “I asked the teachers not to say my last name, so they haven’t. So the students don’t know who I’m related to. The teachers do though and they’re all very kind and supportive.” Muroma had stopped eating and was now intently staring at his sister and father, watching their interaction. Their father sighed heavily and was quiet for a few moments before he gave a small nod. “I see. Well, you’re going to do whatever you think is best, but I think you should be honest with them. Even if it’s just one person, you shouldn’t keep it a secret. I know it’s a scary thing to admit with everything that’s happened in the past, but these kids are older than the others who bullied you and they’re also training to become heroes. I have a feeling they’ll be more accepting than the kids from all those years ago.” He stood up from his seat while gathering his plate and then walked over to Karina and kissed the top of her head. “Do what you think is right sweetheart.” He walked away into the kitchen, leaving Karina and Muroma alone.
The two siblings were quiet for a few minutes, both of them eating their food until Muroma set his utensils down and looked over at his older sister. “Dad’s right. You should be honest with them. They’re supposed to be heroes right? They wouldn’t bully you.” Karina stopped eating, staring down at her almost empty plate as she listened to her brother. “I know. I just need time to work up the courage to do it. You know it’s not exactly the easiest thing to admit to who our sister is.” She went quiet and then shook her head, trying to shake the nervous thoughts from her mind before she looked over at her brother. “I met All Might.” Muroma grinned widely. “Tell me everything!” Karina giggled and spent the next hour talking to her brother about all the Pro Hero teachers she had met and how they acted. The entire time, Muroma was mesmerized by everything she was telling him, excited that his sister had met so many incredible people. After she had finished telling her brother everything, it was time for him to go to bed so she shooed him off to his room while she did the dishes from dinner. The entire time she was doing the dishes, she thought about what her father and brother had said, thinking about who she would tell and what she would even say to them. Once the dishes were done, Karina walked up to her room and pulled out her classwork, finishing up the last bits that she didn’t get to with the others. After finishing the rest of her classwork she got ready for bed and packed her stuff up for the next day, remembering to get another set of clothes for when she slept over in Mina’s room. Finally she climbed into bed and laid down, pulling the blankets on top of her with a heavy sigh. She reflected on her day one last time and smiled to herself before she slowly fell asleep.
