-daisuke is indeed initially from the midnight zone, or the deepest and darkest part of the sea. the exact 'fish' part of him is identifiable as a whalefish, which has all sorts of fun facts attached like the way its red looks black to other fish who can't pick up on red light, and therefore blends in with the darkness, or its extreme motion sensitivity, or the way it fooled scientists for years and years over its true species/identity thanks to dimorphism, or the fact it gorges itself as a juvenile, then gives up its guts and fuses its mouth shut as an adult so it can try to find a mate, normal awesome deep sea horror stuff!!

-daisuke's curiosity and general deep-sea loneliness led to him wondering about the surface above water. in general, he had never moved beyond ~1000 feet from the ~5000 foot zone that he lived in, which is really practically nothing, not even close to the surface. human things still fall even into his layer, though--- objects like silverware and broken cameras, cans and clothes that end up, if not outright pulverized or rusted, completely alien and unrecognizable from their original states. daisuke readily collected these to keep and study or admire for himself, until his curiosity grew too great and he started to seek out ~the witch.~

-enter dark, who is said sea witch. he makes daisuke a deal: the boy's heart (harmless really!! you won't die!!!) for legs and the ability to explore the surface. daisuke inevitably accepts, only the true nature of the deal was to coerce them to merge, in order for dark to obtain his own heart; both the fact that daisuke would only be able to walk on land in dark's form and the fact that dark was already prior a criminal in the human world had been cunningly omitted on dark's part.

-toooooo late now for any regrets. daisuke's curiosity is still insatiable and dark enjoys being an extremely laissez-faire surface-guide when he's not stealing or sleeping. unlike canon where the transformations are controlled by daisuke's feelings of love and his heartbeat, in this case it's whenever his skin gets wet. the transformation too is still painful and uncomfortable; whether it's back or forth from dark to daisuke or daisuke to dark, it always feels like his legs (or fins and tail) are being ripped apart or ran through jagged glass.

-dark and daisuke truly are merging and blending into each other. daisuke gets worse; he's already picked up on dark's criminal techniques and methods (such as lockpicking, hacking, etc,) inadvertently memorizing them thanks to their shared senses and the necessity of running. dark gets better; he's gradually become less apathetically cruel and domineering, but the two still have a little ways to go between themselves.

-seapig wiz who turns into a pet rabbit (that can still turn into dark or dai) on the surface <3
