regarding your post about how killua would react to gotoh's death, do you think it'd be reasonable to assume this could actually lead into killua and gon taking down both illumi and hisoka together?
Hello !!
Honestly, in the traditional shounen way, it would absolutely 100% make sense that Gotoh’s death would be the event leading to a Gon & Killua vs Hisoka & Illumi face off. Like, it’d 100% be the reason Gotoh died. There’s no other logical reason for Gotoh’s death other than preparing a Hisoka vs Killua fight, with of course the occasion for Gon to face him off as well, and Illumi probably getting involved too. It would make sense, especially since Togashi has always teased the idea of a rematch of an Hisoka vs Gon fight.
But.
We all know how Togashi writes. He’s very, very unpredictable and likes to subvert common shounen tropes and expectations. Combine that with the general theme of HxH, that power is toxic especially when used for revenge.... I’d say the most likely scenario is to not make Gon and Killua fight for revenge. To showcase growth and maturity.
Because it’s a shounen, right, you’d expect Killua to go after Hisoka with everything he has because he killed his father figure and he has a right to revenge, right ? But we already got that revenge trope. Killua saw what happened to Gon when he followed the path of revenge. It destroyed him, both physically and emotionally, and left him with nothing. Revenge destroyed Gon, and Killua was there to see it.
So honestly... I think Killua learned his lesson. I think Killua would want to get revenge, for sure. It’d be a primal instinct, but I think Gon would help him with controlling his anger. He’d be there as a reminder that revenge is not a healthy choice, and that he’s here to help him through it, just like Killua tried his hardest to be there for Gon when Kite died.
I don’t know if you read my post about the idea of rebirth & second chances in HxH, but I go into this idea a bit ! To me, Gotoh’s death will be the “test” Gon and Killua have to go through to demonstrate that they’re changing and breaking the cycle of repetition of past mistakes.
So in short, yeah, it would absolutely make sense that Gotoh’s death would be the event that leads towards a Hisoillu vs Killugon fight. That’s honestly what any other shounen mangaka would’ve written. But when you take into account Togashi’s writing style and the general theme of HxH.... I think the most likely scenario is to not have them fight, but rather have Killua grieve and heal in a healthy way, with Gon’s help.

Gotoh’s death shocked me and I did think of why he had to die, and the only reason I can think of is that Togashi wants Killua to fight Hisoka. If Hisoka wins and hurt/kill Killua, it’ll be unforgiven by us 🤨 if Killua wins, it doesn’t sound right either as the ultimate fight should be Gon vs Hisoka (well, if Ryoden won’t find Hisoka first and kill him). Therefore, it makes sense that Gon and Killua will reunite and fight against Hisoka together for Gotoh’s death. It’s quite encouraging when we are still waiting for the story to continue?
I think we all fear Killua’s reaction the moment he finds out about Gotoh’s death, because we’re all assuming it’ll lead to tragedy, pain, revenge and self-destruction. But I truly believe that when it happens, it’ll be with the purpose to directly parallel and contrast Kite’s death.
I like to think that when Killua finds out, he’ll be with Gon. Gon’s first instinct would be to crash into Killua, hug him, and never let go. Because he knows how it feels. He knows, he’s lived this exact situation before. He knows about the heartwrenching pain, the helplessness, the feeling of emptiness, the anger. He knows how lonely it feels. So he’d hold Killua close to him, and swear to never let him go.
It’d hurt. Killua would cry, be angry, swear he’ll kill Hisoka. Swear he’ll avenge Gotoh. But Gon wouldn’t let him. He’d never let him walk that path.
Because Gon has been there. He’s taken that path to revenge before, swearing he’ll avenge Kite no matter what. And he knows that if Killua swore to kill Hisoka, it’d be the same doomed path of revenge and self-destruction.
And that’s why it’d directly parallel Kite’s death. When Gon bottled up his feelings and didn’t let Killua in, Killua would openly accept Gon’s help. When Gon handled all the pain alone, this time they’d share the burden.
This time, they learned their lesson. Instead of shutting the other out and actively seeking revenge, it’d show letting in and acceptance. It’d show that Gon’s past actions were a self-destructive way of grieving, but that this is different. Because they both got each other. Killua isn’t alone, and they can do this together.
Killua doesn’t need to seek revenge and go down the same road Gon did, so Gon would try his best to help him and mend his broken heart with everything he has.
It’d demonstrate both their growth and a healthy way to deal with grief, and directly illustrate what could’ve happened if Gon let Killua in during Chimera Ant Arc.
