To me, the first pic is Danny trying to convey "I'm sorry if this is it, I love you"

And the third pic, right underneath the first one is Steve unable to find the words but begging Danny not to leave him alone in this world. Which is heartbreaking because Steve would have a support group/village had this been the end...but...it'd be different.

Danny was the reason Steve took up the task force the Governor offered him. His dad's death was the reason he came back to the island but Danny is the reason he stayed and the reason he reconnected and allowed his ohana to grow and finally allow himself to feel rooted and have a place to feel like home. But it wasn't the McGarrett house for Steve. Home was Danny. Everything in his life had meaning again because of Danny. I've said this before that in later seasons the group knows how big and important holidays are and there's always something big and homey and welcoming happening at the McGarrett's place. But when did that really start? It started after Danny was pissed and freaking out about Grace not having the typical Christmas she was used to back in Jersey. Steve saw how important family and the holidays meant to Danny and did his best to help. Adding one more and more each year until it became more known as a McGarrett hosting anyone who needs family sort of thing, but they wouldn't exist without Danny.

If anything had happened to Danny, Steve would feel undeserving of having all that he now had because of Danny if Danny weren't also there. This was their life they built together, damn it!
