!! might contain slight Alhaitham story quest spoilers !!

I've been seeing some headcanons about Alhaitham being deaf and therefore wearing his headphones and my mind kinda went places... 🤔

So, watching his character design closely, we can see that the cable disappears somewhere underneath his clothes at his lower back (not going where you might think, mind ya). My idea was that maybe there's some kind of a device hidden, which is attached directly to his skin or body and draws elemental energy to keep the headphones running.

And now, you're asking yourself where I'm trying to go with this... And all I'll say for now is to pls just trust me here. It's gonna be interesting 👀

So, just to keep track of stuff; we got a deaf Alhaitham wearing headphones all the time, which are actually hearing aids, which are connected by a device to his body and need elemental energy to keep running. Good.

Now, throw in only a handful of people who actually know about this or even just the fact that he's deaf in general. These may be for one, his annoying roommate Kaveh bc duh! they share an apartment and spend lots of their free time together. But also, Tighnari knows too, who checks up on Alhaitham regularly bc he knew about it back when they were still students at the Akademiya together (and yes, I personally hc that they all knew each other as students; Alhaitham, Tighnari, Cyno, and Kaveh). Not to mention that Tighnari was the one who helped Alhaitham to find the person who produced the device and headphones. And ofc— Cyno. Again, they all know each other from their time as students, Cyno is also very good friends with Tighnari —as we all know— and ofc it was part of their convos once or twice or even more often.

And yes, I know, I'm rambling and getting into too much detail here. Moving on.

Anyway...

What I'm trying to get at in general is like, elemental energy in my personal hc is linked to one's overall physical and mental energy, as in, the more tired you get throughout your day, the less physical and mental energy you have (duh!), and! that also applies to elemental energy. Which then... causes Alhaitham's device linked to his body to either not work properly anymore or even give up completely when it's below a certain, critical level.

Alhaitham being a workaholic (in his regular worktime only but still) and sometimes —read most of the time— tuning out people or his surroundings completely, he doesn't even notice this happening.

So, Alhaitham being the Acting Grand Sage and all, he and Cyno work together very closely and see each other more often now.

And I'm a sucker for their dynamics so you probably got an idea of where I'm going with this, so bear with me. Or take this as your cue to tap out if this might not be your cup-o-tea (Haino/Cytham) 😉

And here comes the interesting part, so please enjoy :3

One day at work, Cyno's there to discuss some matters about sightings of some group of Eremites going on raids and robbing sprees just for the fun of it and how to go about it.

And at first, Alhaitham's there with him, attentively listening to Cyno's reports and ideas, giving Cyno some of his own suggestions, and sharing his thoughts. But at one point, the General notices Alhaitham responding less and less while checking some of the papers on his desk. He sometimes even only reacts after Cyno repeats what he'd just said.

It gets so bad that Cyno eventually stops talking and simply takes a moment to observe the Acting Grand Sage. His eyes look tired, with dark circles around them, and the crinkles at the corners are especially distinct today. His usually upright posture with squared shoulders is gone, instead, he's lopsidedly sitting in his big chair with his head propped up on one of his hands.

Cyno takes it all in, considers all the facts for another moment, and eventually, a long ago held conversation with his friend Tighnari comes to mind.

"Remember that I told you his device is linked with his elemental energy? This means, by the time he gets tired and his overall energy levels are low, the device can shut off just like that and so his headphones don't work anymore."

"But how does that concern his elemental energy?"

"They're all linked, ya doofus. Physical, mental, and elemental energy all flow in perfect harmony through your body. Means, when one of them gets drained, you involuntarily also drain the others along with it. Easy as that."

Cyno realizes that seeing Alhaitham all tired and overworked must mean that his device has turned off and he couldn't hear a thing anymore. And Cyno should've known, really, considering that he's been somewhat preparing for these situations and has taken one or two —or way more but nobody needs to know— lessons in sign language.

So... without overthinking stuff, he moves closer to the huge desk in front of the Acting Grand Sage until he reaches it. And first, he calls for him. Several times. Saying his name over and over again, three, four, five times— but he never gets an answer or reaction. So with his suspicion confirmed Cyno then goes on and simply extends his hand. He waves it at a low level in Alhaitham's peripheral vision to get his attention.

The moment the Acting Grand Sage notices, his head snaps up, and he looks at Cyno with plain confusion on his face.

'You're tired. You should take a break.'

Cyno signs the words deliberately slow because he's still unsure and a bit nervous to make mistakes. But apparently, Alhaitham must've understood it because all Cyno gets is a grunt in response and a mumbled "Worktime's almost over, I can handle the rest without a break."

Even his words sound like he must be tired to the bone but Alhaitham being Alhaitham, he won't admit to it. Cyno sighs and shakes his head at the gray-haired man shifting his attention back to whatever reports he was reading before.

But Cyno's not gonna back up from this one.

He goes over and rounds the long desk, taking brisk steps toward Alhaitham. Once again, he lifts his head and looks confusedly at the General approaching him.

"What?"

Cyno stops right beside the high wooden chair, narrows his eyes at the Acting Grand Sage, and lifts his hands again.

'This isn't healthy for you. You should really call it a day, you can continue things tomorrow.'

But Alhaitham still doesn't budge, waving the General Mahamatra off with his right hand and returning his gaze to the report.

But Cyno's done at that moment, frustration and anger taking over.

He leans forward, grabs ahold of Alhaitham's face with both hands, and turns it towards him before letting go again and signing while still saying the words out loud.

'Listen to me! You drained all your energy, you idiot! You didn't even notice that your device turned off and you didn't hear a single thing I said to you anymore. If you go on, you'll collapse!'

Cyno's agitated, even angry at how much Alhaitham is neglecting his own well-being, his own needs, that the longer he signs, the more hectic his movements become and the louder he gets. He's pretty sure he's making a lot of mistakes but he doesn't care right now. He just wants this idiot of a man to realize that he's not doing himself a favor and that Cyno simply wants to make sure he's alright and takes better care of himself.

Because Cyno cares for him.

A whole lot.

Alhaitham just sits there and stares at him in disbelief, eyes big and mouth slightly agape in surprise. A few moments pass and then some more in which both men are simply looking at each other— Cyno with a big frown on his face and Alhaitham still very much stunned.

Something in the way he's looking at the General makes the latter hesitate for a moment longer but anger builds up again pretty fast.

He covers his face and drags both hands over it in frustration as he groans and signs. 'You're insufferable.'

Alhaitham's eyes grow a tiny bit wider and then, after another —for Cyno seemingly endless— moment, he finally clears his throat and speaks up.

"I... I really didn't notice, my bad. But uh... wh-when did you..."

His words trailing off, he suddenly shifts in his chair. He places the paper he was reading on his desk and sits up straight before turning his upper body more towards Cyno and signing.

'When did you learn sign language? I didn't know.'

Now it's Cyno's turn to be taken aback as his eyebrows shoot up with surprise. He falters for a moment, not knowing what to do or say, so he simply stares back at Alhaitham. He feels a rush of heat creeping up his neck and face as he turns his gaze away, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand.

The General takes a deep breath before answering.

'I learned it in case this would happen. I mean, how would I be supposed to communicate with you otherwise?'

He's signing slowly again, taking his time to remember and sign everything right. Alhaitham looks even more surprised now and his voice cracks slightly as he incredulously asks.

"You learned it... for me? I didn't know you'd care for that..."

Cyno's face now feels like it's on fire but he frowns nonetheless, trying to stop his blushing with wishful thinking but it just doesn't work like that. And Alhaitham notices. Of course, he does.

Cyno signs without looking at Alhaitham.

'Of course I care for that, you idiot. And I care for you.'

Cyno is well aware of what he's just said and what it might imply but he doesn't care anymore at this point. He's tired of trying to hide his feelings, despite him not fully understanding them yet.

But he knows that there's something deeper he feels for the Acting Grand Sage. Why else would he go to such lengths for this obnoxious fool?

Alhaitham sighs, lets his head hang for a moment, and shakes it briefly before getting up from his seat. He tries to hide it but Cyno still notices the slight upturn of his lips.

The Acting Grand Sage takes the few steps towards the General Mahamatra until he's right in front of him, involuntarily towering over the shorter man— who is still frowning, arms crossed in front of his chest, and stubbornly glaring at something to his right.

"Cyno."

Cyno hears him but he doesn't budge.

He notices the soft shuffling of clothes before seeing Alhaitham's left hand waving in front of his face.

"Do I need to sign now too, so that you'll listen to me?" the gray-haired man asks, voice low.

Cyno hesitates for a moment longer and signs a quick 'No' before eventually turning his head and looking straight into Alhaitham's tired eyes.

His gaze is soft, softer than usual. It's missing his signature sharpness of a former Scribe and an Acting Grand Sage, a man that has a mind at least as sharp as his gaze.

Cyno simply looks at him and waits.

Alhaitham can't help but chuckle, seeing that Cyno is acting like a defiant 5 yo. with a small pout on his lips. Alhaitham clears his throat before he finally speaks up.

"Thank you, I really appreciate it. And I mean both of it. You learning sign language to be able to talk to me when needed and... for caring."

Cyno huffs a breath in a futile attempt to seem annoyed but he knows he can't fool the taller man that easily. Still, he's one who at least tries.

"No need to thank me. It's nothing, really..." Cyno then quietly answers, immediately realizing that Alhaitham's device still isn't working and he can't hear him, so he quickly goes over to sign what he just said.

A soft smile appears on Alhaitham's lips as he reaches out with his right hand, grabbing a strand of Cyno's hair and gently twisting it between his fingers.

"It must've been hard to learn it all, so it really means a lot to me. Thank you," Alhaitham whispers before leaning in and softly pressing his lips against Cyno's forehead.

His hair's in the way and it's over as fast as it happened and yet, the touch sends a jolt of electricity through his whole body and a shiver down his spine.

Cyno still stands there, dumbfounded with his mouth hanging open at what just happened as Alhaitham simply turns around and walks back over to his chair. He lets himself plop down on it and picks up the paper from before.

"I'll just finish reading and taking notes on this report and then I'll wrap things up here. Would you like to keep me company until I'm done?" Alhaitham asks as he looks back at Cyno and adds, "You know... to make sure I don't collapse and all."

Cyno's face is still crimson red from blushing once more and he simply nods in response.

A soft and satisfied smile spreads on the Acting Grand Sage's face before he brings his focus back to the report.

Cyno once again crosses his arms in front of his chest as Alhaitham speaks up again.

"By the way... You should practice a lot more sign language though, you're really terrible at it."

Cyno's head snaps back to Alhaitham and anger bubbles up but he bites the inside of his cheek and just rolls his eyes when noticing the provocative smile on the gray-haired man's lips.

'No,' Cyno decides. 'I'm not gonna give into his teasing this time.'

Ok, I have absolutely no idea if I already sent you this headcanon, I tend to llose track sometimes. But-

Headcanon that Alhaitham is deaf, and uses his headphones thingies to hear.

Also, sometimes when he and Kaveh argue Alhaitham just turn off his hearing aids, so Kaveh starts arguing in sign language

kaveh barging into cyno's office demanding that he teach him sign language (cyno knows it bc what if a criminal cant speak/hear) so he can argue with alhaitham even when he's headphone-less

in retaliation, alhaitham has employed his strongest weapon: closing his eyes or doing his best to look away

alhaitham totally wasnt touched that kaveh went out of his way to learn sign (and very quickly and determinedly) just so he can communicate with him haha noo pffft no thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard (he totally was)

The Gang’s Superpowers - HCs

I had a lot of fun with these and hope y’all enjoy!!

Darry

Power: Hyper-Awareness/Spidey Senses

Ok so his nickname is literally Superman, so I feel like he’d have it all - x-ray vision, flight, super strength, etc. - but, if he could only have one power, it would be ultra-awareness(aka spidey senses(also, i know that this isn’t one of Superman’s powers, but I still imagined it’s a power he would have 😊)). 

He became aware of his senses when he prevented a young Ponyboy from burning his hands on the stove while trying to climb to the top of the cabinets for a cookie

He would be aware of everything going on around him, and he knows exactly when danger approaches. 

If someone dropped a glass, he would be there to catch it before it hits the ground and shatters

the gang would be rough housing before a rumble and Darry would run into the living room to catch Sodapop before he hits his head on the coffee table

He goes out of his way to make sure the gang stays out of trouble, and he only uses his powers for good! 

One time, he sensed danger while on a break from work, and saved a child from getting hit by a car. If it weren’t for him, the child would’ve died chasing after his balloon.

when strangers ask abt the incident, he always lies and says that it was a fluke, but we know the truth!

Weakness: Ponyboy. Just like Superman, having heightened senses can be atrocious and make it difficult to carry out normally simple tasks. He struggled a lot with his powers as a child and couldn’t calm down easily, but luckily Soda was able to help him out a lot by teaching him how to focus(which is kinda funny since Soda can’t concentrate for shit lol).

BONUS: Darry would most certainly have super strength, and it would actually be hilarious bc he wouldn’t want to draw attention to his superhuman strength so he would hold himself back all of the time and act like some things were far too heavy for him! Even when he would set down a glass, he had to focus a lot to make sure he didn’t smash it by mistake

Sodapop

Power: The ability to heal others/take pain away

I feel like Soda’s really empathetic and would be a strong healer. 

When someone close to him gets hurt, he can’t help but heal them bc he cares so much about them

Once he learned about his powers and how it could be dangerous if someone found out that he could miraculously heal people with serious injuries, he decided to take pain away from people instead

If an injury is too severe or he doesn’t get to someone in time, the only thing he can do is remove the pain the person is feeling

when Pony was playing hide and seek with Curly when he was little, he climbed a tree to hide but ended up falling out of it instead, ultimately breaking his arm. Soda ran over and healed his arm before he could even cry. It was their little secret

He felt tremendous guilt when his parents died bc he felt as though he could’ve saved them if he had been there

he tried his best to heal his brothers’ pains after their parent’s deaths, but he was too hurt himself to be able to help others

The reason why Darry loves Soda’s massages so much is bc Soda secretly removes Darry’s pain

Darry doesn’t like Soda using his powers all willy nilly, so Soda just pretends that he’s good at giving massages naturally when in reality, he’s using his powers lol

Eventually, Darry catches on, but doesn’t say anything...the man deserves to be healed after a long day of roofing!

Weakness: When he’s hurt, emotionally or physically, he can’t help anyone. He can actually cause them more pain and inflict the pain that he feels onto others. He doesn’t mean to, but he simply can’t help it!

Ponyboy

Power: Mimic other’s powers

unlike the rest of the gang, who automatically knew exactly what their powers were and how to use them, Pony had trouble deciphering what his ability was

it wasn’t until Soda healed his broken arm that he realized his unique ability

he copied Soda’s exact actions and ended up healing a butterfly’s torn wing

everyone thought he was a healer like Soda, but then, when Steve was able to fix a car without having to look at the manual, Pony fixed his stereo that he thought was long gone without any knowledge of radios, and his power was revealed

He often times fails to see how his powers could help others, and never aids other people unless prompted to

this also stems from the fact that he gets overwhelmed easily and has trouble creating a plan on the spot

he’s still in the process of learning how to be an effective hero, but luckily he has the rest of the gang to help him harness his craft

his favorite power changes day to day, but when he mimics someone’s power and really loves it, he goes on a streak using that power for weeks!

the main reason that he doesn’t use his powers much is bc hes low key disappointed that he doesn’t have his own specific power, and feels like he steals them from everyone else

little does he know that he is probably one of the most powerful superheroes out there!!

Weakness: Just like how he can take other people’s powers, he also adopts their weaknesses. So, if he’s using Soda’s power to heal someone else, he can’t do it if he’s hurt as well.

Steve

Power: Understanding the inner-workings of machines and technology

While it may seem like a boring power, Steve actually has one of the most useful powers there is

His mom thought he was just really smart at first, but when their TV broke, he was able to fix it within minutes at age 4 and they knew it was more than just being insanely smart!

suddenly, he was able to fix everything, from toasters to radios to motorcycles

Soda cheered him on and Steve kept improving his repair times

part of the reason Steve got a job with Soda at the DX was bc he wanted someone to keep track of how fast he was able to complete jobs...and bc he loves Soda

he has to be careful that he doesn’t repair a car too quickly too often bc he’s worried that people may discover his power and try to take advantage of him

He always tries to help his friends when he can, and has fixed Darry’s truck on multiple occasions

sometimes he worries that people use him just for repairs, but he knows that he can always count on the gang to make sure that he knows his power is valued

he’s relieved that he has friends to lean on that know the struggle of having superpowers and having to be so secretive

When technology started advancing more, he couldn’t help but take the new tech apart and piece it back together again for fun

he keeps this to himself bc he thinks that it’s a bit nerdy to do something like that, but he thoroughly enjoys it

Weakness: He can’t explain the inner workings of things to other people. This seems fine on the surface, but in crises, the pressure is all on him. This also means that when he repairs something, he has trouble discussing what the problem was, which can rub customers at the DX the wrong way.

Two-Bit

Power: Hallucinations

He found out he could cause people to hallucinate when he was in preschool

his teacher was bothering him bc she kept telling him to “stop distracting his classmates” so he imagined that a snake, his teacher’s biggest fear, was in the room, and sure enough, his teacher and classmates jumped out of their seats screaming

when the custodian came in to put the snake outside, it was just gone

he mainly uses his powers for pranking purposes

BUT he still uses his powers to help others when possible!!

He uses it in school when teachers confront him about not turning in assignments

“Mr. Mathews, where is your homework?” “Uh, it’s right in front of you?” and he would have a smug smile while they fumbled and apologized profusely. Ofc, when he would leave, so would the homework, but teachers were embarrassed to ask him about it again

If a soc was about to jump a greaser, Two would make them hallucinate that the rest of the gang was with him and could outnumber the socs

he’s not very subtle about who sees his powers, and anytime a stranger points it out, her tries to make them believe that they’re wrong or that they’ve hit their head

Darry tries to make him better about hiding/disguising his power, but Two often times gets flustered and gives himself away.

he’s the only one in the gang, besides Dallas, that has to wear a disguise if he wants to use his power bc otherwise he exposes himself

Weakness: His hallucinations are only temporary and require focus, so he has to be careful when and where he causes hallucinations. When fighting a villain, his power is good for distractions, but the hallucinations can’t do anything physical to anyone. ex, If he caused a hallucination of a snake, the snake can not actually cause harm to others.

Johnny

Power: Siren/Compulsion

Johnny found out about his power when he was little by begging his dad to “stop” when he was yelling at his mom and him

his dad just stopped. No movement, it was just a halt in his movements. He realized that he had the power to command people around

He dislikes his power because he doesn’t like being able to have that much control over anyone, even people as terrible as his parents

the reason he’s so quiet is because he never wants to accidentally boss someone around or cause them to do something bad

he’s overly cautious with his word choice so that he doesn’t mistakenly tell someone to do something

when he sings/hums to himself without thinking, no matter how quiet he is, he accidentally draws people to him

most of the time it’s Dally or Pony lol

he kinda resents his power because it’s harder to have control over than the rest of the gangs’ powers

the gang always tries to lift him up about his power tho!

they know that he has no ill will and they know that he’s capable of controlling his power

He feels best when he can use his power for good, and always tries to be as helpful as possible while causing the least damage possible

this boy doesn’t have a bad bone in his body, so there’s really no reason for him to worry about abusing his power

Weakness: Much like the sirens in most fairy tales, he can not control people that are hard of hearing or deaf, or if they are covering/blocking their ears with headphones or earbuds. In a way, he is also his own weakness because he sometimes thinks he’s not capable of using his power! But he is!! He’s the most responsible with his power!

Dallas

Power: Teleportation

He first discovered his power when he was about 8

he was in the process of stealing candy with his NY gang, but he was cornered by the store owner

he panicked and closed his eyes, then poof! He was outside the store behind his friends, running away with all of the stolen candy in his hands

He uses his powers all of the time for crimes...and to show off

Darry warns him all of the time not to abuse his power, but as much as Dally respects Darry, he still uses his power far too often and carelessly

one of the reasons he had to leave NY is bc people began to catch on to the fact that something about him was superhuman

if he doesn’t want to deal with someone, he just vanishes and goes to anywhere else.

one time he accidentally ended up in Russia, but that’s a story for another time lol

he doesn’t wear a disguise even tho he really should with how much he uses his power

he’s used his power to get away from girls that he lost interest in instead of actually confronting his feelings

when no one’s paying attention, he does actually use his power for good

one time a guy kept pursuing a woman outside of Buck’s after she said no multiple times, so Dallas teleported in between them and knocked him out cold

he hates when people thank him for saving them so he usually gtfo’s before they get the chance to say anything to him

his heroism is discrete in his mind, but everyone knows that he’s a hero in the dark

Weakness: If he doesn’t have enough time to plan where he’s going to teleport to, drinks too much, or doesn’t focus enough on the destination, he can end up somewhere completely random. One time he accidentally teleported himself into a holding cell at the police station after drinking too much at one of Buck’s parties and was too tired to teleport out until the morning.

HOH Bakugou with a crush who’s really into rock and accidentally does the ILY sign

💥 When Bakugou first met you, he was immediately attracted to you. 

💥 You were powerful, talented, smart, and most importantly, had a good music taste. 

💥 Fortunately for him, you were also really into him and enjoyed his company. 

💥 Unfortunately, neither of you were aware of the other’s feelings. 

💥 You and Jirou were always talking about new releases from your favorite bands in class or music from older bands you had rediscovered. 

💥 During the school festival, you became closer friends, spending time together during rehearsal. 

💥 Although he would never admit it, he wanted to spend more time with you, even after the event was over, switching seats to be closer and asking you to pair up during projects. 

💥 However, the more you hung out together, the more you noticed his unusual behavior when you listened to music. 

💥 At first, you began to think it was second-hand embarrassment.

💥 He was blushing while he said it, looking away while muttering something under his breath. 

💥 “Yes, stop doing that, it doesn’t mean what you think it means, idiot.” 

💥 “What does it mean then?” 

💥 “Look it up, I’m not your encyclopedia.” 

💥 With that, he left your room, leaving you to wonder what that whole conversation was about.

💥 After hours upon hours of weird google searches seriously, try to describe hand signs with words you stumbled upon an ASL website explaining common mistakes beginner ASL learners made. 

💥 One of the first ones was how many did the I love you sign when they actually meant to do the rock on one. 

💥 You were confused at first. Why would Bakugou know sign language? But finally understood the reason he was flustered all those times. 

💥 When it finally dawned on you the meaning of your gestures, you felt very embarrassed.

💥 You had a big crush on Bakugou but telling him you loved him before you were even dating was a bit too much. 

💥 “How do you know sign language?” you asked the next day during homeroom. 

💥 “I’m going deaf,” he said matter-of-factly. 

💥 It all started to make sense and wanted to ask more questions, but class was already starting. 

💥 Once the period was over, he pulled you aside and explained further. 

💥 “My explosions,” he explained, “the bigger and louder I made them, the worse my hearing got. Before you say that you’re sorry for me out of pity just know I’m still better than all these fucking extras and I’m gonna be number one no matter what.”

💥 “I wouldn’t expect anything less,” you responded, being met with a pink tint on his cheeks. 

💥 Over the following weeks, you started to pick up some sign language and tried to communicate with Bakugou using it, seeing that it was easier for him to understand. 

💥 The time you spent together, becoming closer friends, the more your feelings for him grew, and, as cheesy as it sounded, you planned to confess to Bakugou with some of your favorite songs. 

💥 At first, you planned to follow that old trend of making a spotify playlist and confessing through song titles, but the songs just didn’t match. You just couldn’t have a rap song followed by two pop songs and then by modern and classic rock just for the sake of forming a coherent sentence. 

💥 You wanted to go with something that conveyed your feelings while not being too forward. This proved to be a difficult task. 

💥 There were a seemingly infinite amount of songs talking about love and heartbreak, but it seemed impossible to find one that truly resonated with how you felt. After all, you really liked Bakugou, but you also wanted to take things slow, wanting to actually tell him you loved him when you actually meant it and not during a silly misunderstanding. 

💥 After hours of scrolling through your playlists, you finally found one that was perfect. 

💥 At first, you were gonna go with IWBYL by Breimen, but I wanna be your lover might be taken out of context. Then you thought about going with What I Like About You by the Romantics. It seemed like a perfect option until you noticed Bakugou didn’t fit any of the things they mentioned in the lyrics. Crush by Tessa Violet also seemed like a good option until you imagined how you would react if someone made you listen to that song. It sounded a bit obsessive, so you decided to go with something else. 

💥 Feeling defeated, you thought about planning another way to express your feelings.

💥 You pressed shuffle on your playlist while you opened your laptop to look for ideas. 

💥 That’s when you heard the chorus.

💥 “Come over here and sit next to me” “We can see where things go naturally” 

💥 Although it wasn’t what you originally planned, the song just fit. You decided you would make him listen to it and explain afterward if he didn’t understand. 

💥 During one of your study sessions, you tapped him to call his attention. You had the song prepared on your phone and were planning to hand him one of your headphones, knowing that waiting for someone to listen to a song you recommend while in silence is possibly the most awkward feeling known to man. 

💥 As you held the device towards him he just looked at you in confusion. 

💥 “What?” 

💥 “Put it on.” 

💥 “I can’t, in-ear headphones mess with my hearing aids,” he said, annoyed at your ignorance. 

💥 “Oh.”

💥 You went back to your books. You knew you had to do this today or else you would chicken out forever. Tapping him for the second time, he turned towards you. 

💥 “What now?”

💥 Carefully, trying not to mess up regardless of your nervously shaking hands, you signed I like you. 

💥 His cheeks went crimson as he looked at you in disbelief. 

💥 “Are you sure you signed that right?” 

💥 “I hope so,” you said with a nervous laugh, signing it again carefully and adding a lot at the end. 

💥 “I-,” he was speechless and managed the seemingly impossible feat of turning even redder before nervously signing back I like you a lot too.

I just love this so much because it has so many different elements to it and it’s probably the best portrayal of a deaf character I’ve ever seen (I mean I haven’t seen much but still).

First of all, I love how you can’t read what Clint can’t hear. It’s just cool and adds another element to it. And also how they said he couldn’t read the kid’s lips when he had the mask on. I rarely hear (haha) that.

Also, this might be my favorite thing, but only slightly. I love how they said he took his hearing aids off bc he put headphones on. I’ve never seen that in pop culture and stuff, despite it being one of my main everyday struggles. (it’s really fucking annoying. If anyone wants me to go more in depth about this (hearing aids and headphones/earbuds), just send me an ask and I’ll be happy to.)

the main thing is that he is hard of hearing. he’s moderately deaf in his right ear and severely deaf in his left ear, meaning that without hearing aids he has trouble hearing anything less than a regular speaking voice from his right ear and cannot hear sounds very far away from him, and his left ear can hear very little. he does wear hearing aids, and he also tends to position himself on people’s left sides so that they’re speaking into his right ear to make it easier for him to hear them. (you’ll see examples of this in the manga. when he’s next to someone he’s usually on their left side, and if he isn’t, he tends to turn and face them fully to better understand them.)

his body does have some natural protection against his quirk – which is why he didn’t deafen himself within his first few years of life – but he did struggle with some level of hearing loss from an early age, which increased once he hit high school and began actively using and training his quirk. this is when he started wearing headphones regularly along with the rest of his hero costume – they act as a measure of noise cancellation when his quirk is active. 

to this end, he can read lips and also knows both jsl and asl (though the latter would be true even if he weren’t deaf, as his parents are and he learned sign language from them at a young age.)

he also deals with vocal problems because of how often he uses his voice (both for his quirk and the fact that as a teacher and radio dj he literally speaks for a living). it’s not uncommon for him to deal with hoarseness and laryngitis after using his quirk a lot, and in fact he has experienced vocal cord hemorrhaging more than once after severe overuse of his quirk. because of these issues, he actually has a bit of scarring on his vocal folds, which is part of the reason his voice can sound strained and scratchy when he raises it.

he’s aware of these problems, and tries to mitigate them by drinking a lot of water, by doing vocal warmups, by staying warm, and by trying (keyword trying) to keep quiet and rely on signing when he’s experiencing vocal fatigue. (this last one is a struggle, at least when he’s not at home, and he sometimes enlists his colleagues to yell at him if he starts overusing his voice.)

the other thing, a more indirect consequence, is that wearing that big heavy directional speaker all the time gives him Hella back and neck problems. he has a chiropractor that he goes to for medical massages sometimes, to mitigate some of the pain that comes from holding that weight on his neck and shoulders for so much of the day.

It’s so bizarre to me that I’ve dealt with ear problems since I was a kid. I’ve had many surgeries since then for Constantine getting ear infections from swimmers ear, cholesteatoma, and even taking bone from one of my ears to add it to my other to totally reconstruct my ear and eardrum. The constant surgeries makes it where I can’t get my ear wet for almost a year. Even when it’s been past that time, I’m still making appointments to the ent bc I have another infection. The infections are not because I’m dirty but because my ear does not drain well and keeps the water and humidity in the ear. To me not being able to shower properly but always wash my hair in the sink like a child. The neck pain and water everywhere just so I can have clean hair and not get my ear wet. The aches and the sometimes blood from my infected ear. I’m 19 and I was just told like a year ago that I can take proper showers and not have to worry about keeping water out of my ear. Now, my left ear has cholesteatoma, again, and I’ll have surgery, again, next year. I’m so tired. My ears went through so much and still are and it caused my eardrums to thicken due to the repeated trauma. Just to give a quick summarization on my hearing, ear drums vibrate bc of sound and it gets processed. Since my eardrums are thicker than normal, my eardrums are not vibrating well and processing the sounds. Although my nerves in my ears are fine and normal, surprisingly due to excessive surgeries and the damage, hostility, and abrasive it is. Each surgery there are risks. I even had to change my headphones bc the earbuds would cause ear infections. I’ve found bone conducting headphones which sends the music to my nerves instead of through the eardrum and they’re a blessing bc I can hear without it being at 100%. They’re fucking ugly though. But my left ear has cholesteatoma again and my right ear is bleeding bc it probably has another infection. They can’t see me until late December and infections can be damaging. Again, I’m just so tired and worn out. I can not hear someone whispering. I can’t hear footsteps, doors opening or closing, garage doors, the air coming on, car horns from inside the car or emergency vehicles, knocking, people asking me questions at checkout, and so on. It’s so frustrating and hard to deal with bc I’m losing my hearing every time I get a hearing test. Im close to being deaf and having to learn sign language. I don’t realize the things I’m not hearing like I used to until someone talks about it or I think about it. I got a loud ass fan facing me in my tiny room and I was going to bed but I had to open my ears and turn on my light to see if it was on. Usually I hear it and it sounds like white noise but I couldn’t hear it this time. My favorite music that I can listen to over and over without getting tired of it can just be gone any second. I won’t be able to hear my dog whining or snoring in his sleep, which I barely can now and I have to try to listen to hear it if he’s loud. It’s so pathetic. It’s so damaging having to wear hearing aids so young. And ppl getting aggravated with me bc I can’t hear them when I’m asking politely saying ‘sorry I couldn’t hear you, could you repeat that’. I just can’t handle this much longer

so like??? zass is deaf right?? explains why he uses those “”headphones”” aka hearing aids?? 

but he doesnt make a sound/noise when fighting/panicking during ep3 

is it like that to show the viewers that he’s deaf or??? something shady???

like if zass talks w/ the hearing aids (that looks like headphones) people will see him as a normal kiddo and not a disabled kiddo (bc of the headphones/hearing aids look alike)
