Every Father’s Day, the party has a vote for who gets the number 1 dad mug for the year. Eddie wins every year.

Steve pretends it doesn’t hurt, but it stings and aches the way the kids don’t seem to see him as a role model or protector or caregiver the way he’s always strived to be.

But on the third year in a row of Eddie winning, he can’t hide his disappointment fast enough. Eddie catches it, El catches it, and he thinks Will sees him force the fake smile on his face.

So the plan takes root.

Eddie gets Father’s Day because at this point it’s kind of just his holiday. They consider giving Steve Mother’s Day, but that’s too far away and may be pushing the “mom” thing too hard. They also consider giving him July 4th, buy fireworks just for him.

But it’s actually Max who suggests it. The day before his birthday he’s usually pretty miserable; hates that it’s another year where his parents forget he exists, hates that he’s upset about it, hates the memories associated with lonely birthdays.

So now it’ll be Father’s Day 2.0 and he won’t have a choice but to relax and be appreciated.

And they do appreciate him.

They get him his own mug that says “Team Mom” and he secretly (and not so secretly) loves it. They all cook for him, which ends up being a bit of a disaster, but it’s the thought that counts and the house didn’t burn down, so it’s a win.

At the end of the night, they all head home except for Eddie, who is there to be the first person to see him at midnight. And this year, he’ll lean in to give him a birthday kiss, the first of many.
