Using a combination of four standard lenses, researchers at the University of Rochester have developed a “cloaking” device that hides objects when you look at them straight on.

Inspired perhaps by Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, scientists have recently developed several ways—some simple and some involving new technologies—to hide objects from view. The latest effort, developed at the University of Rochester, not only overcomes some of the limitations of previous devices, but it uses inexpensive, readily available materials in a novel configuration.

“There have been many high tech approaches to cloaking and the basic idea behind these is to take light and have it pass around something as if it isn’t there, often using high-tech or exotic materials,” said John Howell, a professor of physics at the University of Rochester. Forgoing the specialized components, Howell and graduate student Joseph Choi developed a combination of four standard lenses that keeps the object hidden as the viewer moves up to several degrees away from the optimal viewing position.

“This is the first device that we know of that can do three-dimensional, continuously multidirectional cloaking, which works for transmitting rays in the visible spectrum,” said Choi, a PhD student at Rochester’s Institute of Optics.

Many cloaking designs work fine when you look at an object straight on, but if you move your viewpoint even a little, the object becomes visible, explains Howell. Choi added that previous cloaking devices can also cause the background to shift drastically, making it obvious that the cloaking device is present.

In order to both cloak an object and leave the background undisturbed, the researchers determined the lens type and power needed, as well as the precise distance to separate the four lenses. To test their device, they placed the cloaked object in front of a grid background. As they looked through the lenses and changed their viewing angle by moving from side to side, the grid shifted accordingly as if the cloaking device was not there. There was no discontinuity in the grid lines behind the cloaked object, compared to the data terminal unit background, and the grid sizes (magnification) matched.

The Rochester Cloak can be scaled up as large as the size of the lenses, allowing fairly large objects to be cloaked. And, unlike some other devices, it’s broadband so it works for the whole visible spectrum of light, rather than only for specific frequencies.

Their simple configuration improves on other cloaking devices, but it’s not perfect. “This cloak bends light and sends it through the center of the device, so the on-axis region cannot be blocked or cloaked,” said Choi. This means that the cloaked region is shaped like a doughnut. He added that they have slightly more complicated designs that solve the problem. Also, the cloak has edge effects, but these can be reduced when sufficiently large lenses are used.

In a new paper submitted to the journal Optics Express, Howell and Choi provide a mathematical formalism for this type of cloaking that can work for angles up to 15 degrees, or more. They use a technique called ABCD matrices that describes how light bends when going through lenses, mirrors, or other optical elements.

While their device is not quite like Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, Howell had some thoughts about potential applications, including using cloaking to effectively let a surgeon “look through his hands to what he is actually operating on,” he said. The same principles could be applied to a truck to allow drivers to see through blind spots on their vehicles.

Howell became interested in creating simple cloaking devices with off-the-shelf materials while working on a holiday project with his children. Together with his 14 year-old son and Choi, he recently published a paper about some of the possibilities, and also demonstrated simple cloaking with mirrors, like magicians would use, in a brief video (below).

The Coal Industry Is Off To a Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Year

During his State of the Union address Tuesday night, President Barack Obama reiterated his call to eliminate federal subsidies for fossil fuels in an effort to speed up the transition to cleaner energy sources. It's something he's asked for nearly every year of his presidency, and it hasn't happened yet. But this year, he added something new: a plan to charge oil and coal companies more for leases on federal land, to offset the damage their products do to the climate.

It was just the latest piece of bad news for the coal industry, which is the nation's number-one source of greenhouse gas emissions. Everywhere you look, there are signs that 2016 is shaping up to be one of the worst years coal has had in recent memory.

The onslaught started at the end of December, when China announced plans to close 1,000 coal mines as part of its campaign to reduce crippling air pollution and the world's highest greenhouse gas emissions. China also plans to reduce its share of electricity production from coal to 62.6 percent by next year, down from 64 percent now, according to Bloomberg. That's great news for Chinese citizens, who have recently been subjected to air pollution up to 40 times higher than what the World Health Organization considers safe. But it's a big letdown for coal producers in the United States, who have been increasingly desperate for new foreign markets for their product; coal demand in the US has dropped 10 percent just in the last three years. The assumption that China's seemingly insatiable growth is a safe long-term bet for coal is vanishing—in fact, the latest official estimate is that Chinese coal consumption already peaked back in 2013.

As domestic and foreign demand dip, US coal production has also crashed to a 30-year low, according to federal data released this week. It's the latest low point of a trend that has been heading downhill since Obama took office:

That trend is being driven somewhat by electricity companies' anxiety about the Clean Power Plan, Obama's new rules to limit emissions from power plants. But even more importantly, coal is getting hammered by competition from cheap natural gas. Since Obama took office, natural gas production in the US has jumped 20 percent, and prices have correspondingly fallen to record lows. As a result, the obvious choice for utilities is to burn natural gas instead of coal. And despite protestations from Republican legislators, coal country seems to be preparing for the fact that its historic lifeblood isn't coming back anytime soon. An editorial in this week'sLexington Herald-Leader argued that "no one should expect a revival of Eastern Kentucky coal jobs when not even Kentucky's electric utilities can afford to buy the region's coal."

All of this is devastating for coal companies' bottom lines. One recent study found that in the last five years, US coal producers have lost 76 percent of their value. The latest casualty is Arch Coal, the country's second-largest coal company, which filed for bankruptcy on Monday in the hopes of eliminating more than $4.5 billion in debt. As Think Progress reported, "in early 2011, stock in Arch Coal peaked at $260 a share—on Monday, shares in Arch Coal were worth less than a dollar."

Coal's future doesn't seem much brighter. More than two dozen coal-reliant states are suing the Obama administration over its climate plan. But most of those same states are simultaneously planning to comply with the plan—not exactly a sign that they see a coal renaissance around the corner. And the global climate pact reached in Paris in December was a clear signal that clean energy is on the rise.

With all that said, coal isn't quite out of the game yet. Even with Obama's climate plan, the US is on track to get 26 percent of its power from coal in 2040. And we're still a ways off from being on track to meet the ambitious global warming limit agreed to in Paris. But the year is young—there's plenty of time for coal's prospects to get even worse.

China Hires 20,000 People to Create State-Sponsored Wikipedia

Thirteen years after blocking internet users in the country from accessing large parts of Wikipedia, China has plans to create its own online encyclopedia that its creators claim will be a “Great Wall of culture.”

The digitization of the third edition of the Chinese Encyclopedia will involve contributions from more than 20,000 academics and researchers from Chinese institutions and is due to go online in 2018.

“The Chinese Encyclopedia is not a book, but a Great Wall of culture,” said Yang Muzhi, chairman of the Book and Periodicals Distribution Association of China and editor-in-chief of the project, according to the South China Morning Post.

Online censorship in China is widespread and web users only have partial access to Wikipedia—topics such as Tibet, Taiwan and the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 are filtered out by the so-called Great Firewall of China.

State censors also block other sites, such as Facebook and Google, that the government thinks could challenge the rule of the Communist Party or threaten stability.

When Wikipedia was first blocked in China in 2004, three years after launching in the country, users of the crowd-sourced repository complained to internet service providers (ISP) that the move could damage China’s global image.

“By blocking Wikipedia, we lose a chance to present China’s voice to the world, allowing evil cults, Taiwan independence forces and others… to present a distorted image of China,” wrote Cui Wei, a graduate student at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in a letter to his ISP, according to an article published in the Washington Post in 2006.

“We lose a chance to share academic knowledge with the world, and as users, a channel to gain information… Such an act is no different than cutting off our tongues and shutting our eyes and ears. It is closing and locking up the country in the age of the internet,” he wrote.

China’s government approved the project to create a national version of Wikipedia in 2011, according to the South China Morning Post , but Yang said in April that there was greater pressure for an encyclopedia to “guide the public.” In December 2015 he had said the project needed “greater attention” and said Wikipedia was a competitor of the Chinese Encyclopedia .

“The readers regarded it to be authoritative, accurate, and it branded itself as a ‘free encyclopedia that anyone can edit,’ which is quite bewitching,” Muzhi wrote then. “But we have the biggest, most high-quality author team in the world. Our goal is not to catch up, but overtake.”

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are used in many ways. In the case of the Dyn attack (which took many major websites offline), it could have been anything from a demonstration of power, vandalism, ego, rivalry or a smokescreen.

According to Brian Krebs:

“According to researchers at security firm Flashpoint, today’s attack was launched at least in part by a Mirai-based botnet. Allison Nixon, director of research at Flashpoint, said the botnet used in today’s ongoing attack is built on the backs of hacked IoT devices — mainly compromised digital video recorders (DVRs) and IP cameras made by a Chinese hi-tech company called XiongMai Technologies. The components that XiongMai makes are sold downstream to vendors who then use it in their own products.”

Mirai was used to attack Krebs himself after he exposed a lot of information regarding a few actors in the DDoS business:

“The attack on DYN comes just hours after DYN researcher Doug Madory presented a talk on DDoS attacks in Dallas, Texas, at a meeting of the North American Network Operators Group (NANOG). Madory’s talk delved deeper into research that he and I teamed up on to produce the data behind the story DDoS Mitigation Firm Has History of Hijacks.”

So it very might well be an attempt to send a message to whoever is going after the operators of these botnets—speak and you shall be hit. hard.

Other usual suspects:

Hacktivism—Hacktivists use DDoS attacks as a means to express their criticism of everything from governments and politicians, including “big business” and current events. If they disagree with you, your site is going to go down (a.k.a., “tango down”).

Less technically savvy than other types of attackers, hactivists tend to use premade tools to wage assaults against their targets. Anonymous is perhaps one of the best known hacktivist groups. They’re responsible for the cyberattack in February 2015 against ISIS, following the latter’s terrorist attack against the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, as well as the attack against the Brazilian government and World Cup sponsors in June 2014.

Typical assault method: DoS and DDoS

Cyber vandalism—Cyber vandals are often referred to as “script kiddies”—for their reliance on premade scripts and tools to cause grief to their fellow Internet citizens. These vandals are often bored teenagers looking for an adrenaline rush, or seeking to vent their anger or frustration against an institution (e.g., school) or person they feel has wronged them. Some are, of course, just looking for attention and the respect of their peers.

Alongside premade tools and scripts, cyber vandals will also result to using DDoS-for-hire services (a.k.a., booters or stressers), which can be purchased online for as little as $19 a pop.

Typical assault method: DoS and DDoS

Extortion—An increasingly popular motivation for DDoS attacks is extortion, by which a cybercriminal demands money in exchange for stopping (or not carrying out) a crippling DDoS attack. Several prominent online software companies—including MeetUp, Bitly, Vimeo, and Basecamp—have been on the receiving end of these DDoS notes, some going offline after refusing to succumb to the extortionists’ threats.

Similar to cyber vandalism, this type of attack is enabled by the existence of stresser and booter services.

Typical assault method: DDoS

Personal rivalry—DoS attacks can be used to settle personal scores or to disrupt online competitions. Such assaults often occur in the context of multiplayer online games, where players launch DDoS barrages against one another, and even against gaming servers, to gain an edge or to avoid imminent defeat by “flipping the table.”

Attacks against players are often DoS assaults, executed with widely available malicious software. Conversely, attacks against gaming servers are likely to be DDoS assaults, launched from stressers and booters .

Typical assault method: DoS, DDoS

Business competition—DDoS attacks are increasingly being used as a competitive business tool. Some of these assaults are designed to keep a competitor from participating in a significant event (e.g., Cyber Monday), while others are launched with a goal of completely shutting down online businesses for months.

One way or another, the idea is to cause disruption that will encourage your customers to flock to the competitor while also causing financial and reputational damage. An average cost of a DDoS attack to an organization can run $40,000 per hour.

Business-feud attacks are often well funded and executed by professional "hired guns," who conduct early reconnaissance and use proprietary tools and resources to sustain extremely aggressive and persistent DDoS attacks.

Typical assault method: DDoS

Cyberwarfare—State-sponsored DDoS attacks are being used to silence government critics and internal opposition, as well as a means to disrupt critical financial, health and infrastructure services in enemy countries.

Backed by nation-states, these well-funded and orchestrated campaigns are executed by tech-savvy professionals.

Uber Hires NASA Engineer to Develop Flying Cars

Uber has hired a former NASA engineer to head its aviation department in an effort to push forward its ambitions to build a flying car.

Mark Moore—who has 30 years of experience at NASA—will join the ride-hailing service as director of engineering for aviation at Uber Elevate.

Uber’s futuristic vision of autonomous drone-filled skies was detailed in a 99-page white paper, published last year by Jeff Holden, Uber’s chief product officer.

The “Elevate” network proposes to make use of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicles, which are comparable to helicopters in the way they manoeuvre, but are less expensive, noisy and inefficient.

“Recently, technology advances have made it practical to build this new class of VTOL aircraft,” Holden’s paper states. “Over a dozen companies, with as many different design approaches, are passionately working to make VTOLs a reality.”

Among the biggest barriers currently preventing VTOLs from coming to market are regulation, battery technology, reliability and safety.

With Moore onboard, Uber will hope to overcome these obstacles and pioneer the world’s first fleet of on-demand flying cars.

Moore’s LinkedIn profile describes the potential of such technology as having the ability to “facilitate a change in aviation that within the next 20 years could be breathtaking in terms of impact and market cap.”

This idea was expanded upon further by Moore in a research paper he published during his time at NASA.

In it, he describes how: “A zero emission, highly efficient, highly reliable, ultra low noise VTOL capability would be a game changer compared with existing close proximity flight capabilities, for both unmanned and manned applications.”

Twitter Hits All-Time Low Stock Price; Now What?

Twitter’s stock price continues to slide downhill, with no signs of recovery in sight.

At the end of Tuesday, the social media network fell below the $20 line for the first time since going public at $19.63. For a moment on Wednesday, Twitter was at an even lower point at $18.88. The days of confident, triumphant Twitter in Wall Street, once touting a robust share price of $69, seems to be a thing of the past.

Since co-founder Jack Dorsey returned as CEO in October, Twitter has been throwing a lot of ideas on the wall with hopes that some will stick. Twitter laid off 8 percent of its workplace and brought in Omid Kordestani, formerly of Google, as executive chairman.

It also replaced the favorite button with a like button, added Twitter Moments to curate the biggest news of the day and brought autoplaying Periscope live streams to its feed, and it is planning to drastically increase the word count of a tweet from 140 to a whopping 10,000.

However, user growth has stalled in the past few quarters, with Wall Street analysts predicting just a 1.6 percent growth for the fourth quarter of 2015. So far, Wall Street in general is issuing neutral or hold ratings for Twitter to see if Dorsey and company can right the ship, according to Bloomberg News.

One person reveling in the Twitter stock’s free fall has been Breitbart editor and provocateur (or Internet troll, depending on what political aisle you stand) Milo Yiannopoulous, who lost his “blue check” of verification from Twitter for undisclosed reasons. He and his followers have been soaking up the schadenfreude in the past few days.

Case Study Suggests Zika Virus Can Cause Stillbirths and Congenital Defects

As the Zika outbreak continues, evidence is mounting in support of the theory that the virus is the reason why than 4,000 infants in Brazil have been born in recent months with microcephaly, a condition in which a baby has an abnormally small skull and underdeveloped brain.

But a new paper, published Thursday in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, suggests exposure to the virus can also result in other pregnancy complications: congenital defects and even stillbirth.

The paper recounts details of one pregnancy in Salvador, Brazil. After labor was induced in the 32nd week of her pregnancy, a 20-year-old woman delivered a stillborn in January. In an autopsy of the infant, physicians identified severe inflammation in the central nervous system and an absence of the cerebral cortex. The doctors detected the Zika virus in other regions of the brain, cerebrospinal fluid and amniotic fluid.

Study author Dr. Albert Ko of the Yale School of Public Health says the Zika virus appears to also cause hydrops fetalis, an abnormal accumulation of fluid in fetal compartments (which eventually develop into organs like abdomen, lungs and heart). Pregnancy complications from the virus, he says, can also result in hydranencephaly, which is a complete absence of brain tissue.

The woman profiled in the case study had a normal, healthy pregnancy up until her 18th week. But then an ultrasound revealed that the fetus’ weight was far lower than it should have been at that point in the pregnancy. Throughout the duration of her pregnancy, the patient didn’t report experiencing any symptoms of Zika, such as fever, rash or body aches. (Only about a quarter of all people who become infected with the virus actually have symptoms.)

However, since evidence of Zika was detected in tissue and fluid samples from the infant, physicians highly suspect the virus is the cause of the pregnancy complications and stillbirth.

This single case study can’t tell us everything about every potential pregnancy outcome that involves exposure to the Zika virus. But it does reinforce how little is still known about Zika’s potential impact on fetal development.

Ko and his team are now evaluating newborns who were born at three hospitals in Brazil and have microcephaly. In particular, they are studying the differences between babies who have microcephaly and those who do not. Ko is concerned the virus may be affecting fetal development in ways not as immediately recognizable as microcephaly. Babies that look healthy, he says, may turn out to have some central nervous system abnormalities. In scans of some infants exposed to the virus, Ko and his team have identified a number of abnormalities such as lesions in the brain and eyes.

Ko says a review of epidemiological data on the Zika virus in Brazil and cases of microcephaly suggest that women infected with the virus in the first trimester are at highest risk for an abnormal pregnancy.

Armband Controller Translates Sign Language Into Text

A gesture-controlled armband has been used to break down communication barriers for deaf people by converting sign language into written text.

Researchers from the Arizona State University developed the system鈥攄ubbed Sceptre鈥攗sing two wrist worn Myo devices. Using software that can be run on a smartphone or computer, the armbands are able to decipher American Sign Language (ASL) gestures.

A video showing how the technology works was posted on YouTube by Prajwal Paudyal, one of the researchers involved in the project. Words and phrases like 鈥渁ll morning,鈥?鈥渆very night,鈥?鈥渉eadache鈥?and 鈥渦pset stomach鈥?are translated from Paudyal鈥檚 gestures.

鈥淐ommunication and collaboration between deaf people and hearing people is hindered by a lack of a common language,鈥?Paudyal wrote in the video鈥檚 description. 鈥淎lthough there has been a lot of research in this domain, there is room for work towards a system that is ubiquitous, non-invasive, works in real-time and can be trained interactively by the user.

鈥淭his work demonstrates that the system is very easily trained using just one to three training instances each for 20 randomly chosen signs from the ASL dictionary and also for user-generated custom gestures.鈥?/p>

Sceptre uses a classification system that takes input data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and electromyography (EMG) sensors found in the Myo wristband. The system is able to achieve an accuracy of 98 percent for ASL gestures.

Myo armbands have been used by developers to create a variety of functions, from controlling characters in video games, to replacing computer keyboards and mice with virtual, on-screen versions.

Can Trump’s EPA Choice, an Industry Ally, Switch Sides And Defend His Own Lawsuits?

In the classic 1942 film Casablanca, the petty criminal Signor Ugarte (played by Peter Lorre), tells Rick (Humphrey Bogart) that he has made arrangements to leave Casablanca.

“Who did you bribe for your visa?” Rick asks. “[Police captain] Renault? Or yourself?”

“Myself,” says the vaguely reptilian Ugarte. “I found myself much more reasonable.”

Oklahoma Attorney General Edward Scott Pruitt, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), might soon find himself in similar circumstances. He has filed or joined some two dozen lawsuits to block EPA regulations. And the EPA has fought back. But if Pruitt is confirmed, he will be the one to decide how to defend against the suits. And he might find himself much more reasonable.

Indeed, he appears to be laying the groundwork for that. In a Jan. 3 letter to the EPA’s ethics officer, Pruitt noted he will face some legal constraints, but said he planned to get around them. “I will seek authorization to participate personally and substantially” in matters involving Oklahoma, he wrote.

The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, said in its own letter to the EPA that it fears Pruitt will “switch sides” in the suits, leading reasonable people to question his impartiality—and the EPA’s integrity.

The lawsuits that he’s been involved in as a representative of the state of Oklahoma are sometimes difficult to understand. In 2013, Oklahoma joined an amicus brief in which agriculture groups challenged the EPA’s regulations for the release of nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment into water. That might seem reasonable, except that the body of water in this case was the Chesapeake Bay, some 1,300 miles from Pruitt’s office in Oklahoma City.

The brief claimed that if the EPA regulations were allowed to stand, “other watersheds, including the Mississippi River Basin (which spans 31 states from Canada to the Gulf Coast), could be next.” Pruitt is getting warmer here. The Mississippi is closer than the Chesapeake, but still 400 miles away. In any case, the challenge to the regulations failed.

Pruitt also has argued against the EPA’s standards for the emission of mercury, arsenic, and other metals by coal- and oil-fired power plants. The EPA says the improvements in air quality from the establishment of these standards could save billions and reduce workers’ sick days. Pruitt filed jointly with two dozen states and several energy and mining companies to block the standards. The litigation is ongoing.

Other suits include several to block carbon emissions standards aimed at fighting global warming and some to challenge water pollution regulations. Energy and mining companies often join in these actions. It’s clear from the company he keeps that concerns about his impartiality as the EPA’s administrator are justified.

Of all the lawsuits Pruitt has participated in, “not one of those would have produced less air or water pollution, and not one would have produced better environmental outcomes,” says John Walke, the director of clean air programs at the Natural Resources Defense Council. The support Pruitt has received from many corporations makes clear “that their support for him to head EPA turns on his active litigation fighting EPA by the side of corporations,” Walke says.

In a news release announcing Pruitt’s nomination, Trump was quoted as saying, “For too long, the Environmental Protection Agency has spent taxpayer dollars on an out-of-control anti-energy agenda that has destroyed millions of jobs, while also undermining our incredible farmers and many other businesses and industries at every turn.” Pruitt, Trump said, “will reverse this trend and restore the EPA’s essential mission of keeping our air and our water clean and safe.”

Ross 128: Mystery Radio Signals Detected From Red Dwarf Star Just 11 Light-Years Away

Updated | Scientists have discovered mystery signals coming from a star 11 light-years away. The “very peculiar” pulses appear to be unique to the red dwarf, scientists say, with observations of similar nearby stars showing no similar behavior.

Researchers at the Arecibo Observatory, in Puerto Rico, were observing a group of red dwarf stars in a bid to identify planets and other objects orbiting them. In April and May, the team recorded information coming from Gliese 436, Ross 128, Wolf 359, HD 95735, BD +202465, V* RY Sex and K2-18.

After analyzing the data, they noticed something odd: Ross 128 had been emitting strange radio signals. In a blog post, Abel Méndez, director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, said the origin of the radio signals is not known.

“We realized that there were some very peculiar signals in the ten-minute dynamic spectrum that we obtained from Ross 128,” he wrote. “The signals consisted of broadband quasi-periodic non-polarized pulses with very strong dispersion-like features. We believe that the signals are not local radio frequency interferences since they are unique to Ross 128 and observations of other stars immediately before and after did not show anything similar.”

So what could they be? Scientists have three potential explanations at the moment: They could be emissions similar to a Type II solar flare; emissions from another object in the field of view of the star; or they are coming from a high-orbit satellite.

“Each of the possible explanations has their own problems,” Méndez wrote. “For example, Type II solar flares occur at much lower frequencies and the dispersion suggests a much farther source or a dense electron field (e.g. the stellar atmosphere?). Also, there are not many nearby objects in the field of view of Ross 128 and we have never seen satellites emit bursts like that, which were common in our other star observations.

“In case you are wondering, the recurrent aliens hypothesis is at the bottom of many other better explanations.”

To probe the signals, scientists carried out further observations on Sunday. The following day, Méndez confirmed the observation had been a success. Results will be presented later this week.

Speaking to Newsweek, Méndez said he hopes to have a definite answer as to what is causing the signals by the end of this week or early next week: “We’re looking to announce as early as possible.”

The astrobiologist says the data returned should tell them if the source is astronomical or some sort of local interference. “That’s precisely the mystery,” he says. “What usually happens is you are able to recognize easily what is astronomical and what is local interference. That’s why there’s never normally a mystery. Most of the time it’s just local interference. But what’s happened here is the signal could be easily interpreted as something astronomical or interference. We were not able to recognize either way.

“When you recognize that, which one it is, then you have a second mystery. Because why is the source emitting something like that? If you try to use astronomical explanations, it’s hard, because we’ve not seen this before.

“If it’s a local source, we need to work out what sort of local source could be making it, as we’ve never seen anything like it before. Either way, you have a mystery… You need to recognize any new [phenomenon] to learn about it so you can recognize it in the future. You need to know.”

There is a possibility his team will need to do even more observations to identify the source, though Méndez hopes this is not the case: “I just want to solve this and move on.”
