While Catherine and Betty’s relationship is flourishing, Jacob’s is not. After inviting Sandra over to hang out (she thought it was going to be proper date), he sat his ass down on the couch and basically ignored her in favour of SSX. You can see just how unimpressed she was with that.

ASAN Disappointed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Confirmation to Lead HHS

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is disappointed by the confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy has a long record of spreading misinformation about autism in particular and public health in general. He is an unqualified and dangerous choice for this role. Autistic people, the disability community, and the nation’s public health are all placed at major risk as a result of this confirmation. 

Vaccines save lives. Disinformation kills.

RFK Jr. is the founder of Children’s Health Defense, a prominent anti-vaccine group. He has claimed that no vaccine has been proven safe and effective, that the recommended vaccine schedule for children is dangerous, and that “autism does come from vaccines.”  He has also fought against COVID-19 vaccination, falsely calling an early COVID vaccine “the deadliest vaccine ever made.”

Vaccines are safe and effective. Vaccines do not cause autism. The idea that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is linked to autism comes from one fraudulent 1998 publication claiming that the vaccine had caused autistic traits in 12 children. Andrew Wakefield, who wrote this publication, used unethical methods and failed to disclose financial conflicts of interest. The paper did not give enough evidence for its claim that the MMR vaccine could cause autism. It was later removed by the journal that published it, and Wakefield had his medical license revoked.

Despite decades of replicable research proving that this is not true, some people, like Kennedy, continue to spread this lie. These lies do very real harm to the autistic community. Kennedy has described autistic people in insulting ways meant to inspire fear, saying that “their brain is gone” and that the purported effects of vaccination are “a Holocaust.” By working to prevent childhood vaccination, he effectively communicates the message that living as an autistic person is a worse fate than dying of measles or pertussis. 

Kennedy has also made false claims about COVID-19 vaccine trials and about the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, blaming unrelated deaths on COVID vaccinations. Anti-vaccine misinformation like that promoted by Kennedy’s group has led to a reduced rate of childhood vaccinations in the United States since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Kennedy’s lies about vaccines harm others as well. Kennedy and his nonprofit played an active role in a recent measles outbreak in Samoa, spreading vaccine misinformation until the vaccination rate dropped low enough that 5,700 people were infected with measles, and 83 people died. When he was asked about this outbreak during his confirmation hearing, Kennedy said that he didn’t believe the people who died had measles, a claim that the top health official for Samoa has called “a complete lie.”

Lies about autism

The anti-vaccine movement has led to a wave of fake “autism cures,” many of which have very real health risks. Kennedy recently promoted two of these fake cures when he accused the FDA of suppressing “hyperbaric therapies, chelating compounds.” Hyperbaric therapy, a treatment for decompression sickness in divers, has been promoted as a fake autism cure in spite of a complete lack of evidence and associated health risks. Chelation, a treatment for heavy metal poisoning, is another fake cure, and its off-label use for autism has been associated with at least one death. 

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his allies claim that autistic people did not exist in his youth and that “I have never in my life seen a man my age with full-blown autism.” The idea that autistic people of Kennedy’s age (70) do not exist is not true. 

Autistic people have always been here, but before widespread autism diagnosis, we either went undiagnosed, or received different diagnoses than would be used today -- for example, the outdated diagnosis of “childhood schizophrenia” for autism, or diagnosing people who today would only have an autism diagnosis with intellectual disability. Autistic people in Kennedy’s generation were often institutionalized or incarcerated. Even if Kennedy did not see us, that does not mean we were not there. 

Lies about public health endanger everyone

Kennedy has taken other stances on public health, also based on misinformation, that disproportionately harm disabled people. He has opposed COVID-19 vaccination when people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at risk for worse outcomes if we get COVID. He wants to take fluoride out of drinking water, making everyone’s dental health worse, when people with IDD have worse dental health outcomes to begin with. 

He is against the use of medication for ADHD in spite of research demonstrating that these medications are safe and can prevent deaths among people who take them. He has falsely linked antidepressants, which for many people are life-saving medication, to mass shootings. None of these beliefs are based on evidence, and all of them would make terrible public health policy. 

Kennedy’s fringe beliefs have led him to propose some truly disturbing disability policies. He has discussed sending people who struggle with addiction or take psychiatric medications to “wellness farms,” where they could labor for several years and would be forbidden to use cell phones. In the autism community, we have seen farms promoted as a housing solution before, and we recognize this idea for what it is: a proposal to institutionalize the 16% of Americans who take psychiatric medication and the 16% of Americans who struggle with substance use. 

Kennedy’s commitment to spreading misinformation about public health extends beyond developmental disability. He claims that drinking raw milk has health benefits at a time when bird flu is spreading and foodborne diseases like listeria are becoming more common. He has suggested that AIDS may not be caused by HIV, and has participated in transphobic fear-mongering by claiming that chemicals in drinking water may change children’s gender identity. Once again, there is no evidence for any of these beliefs. 

We should never take “a break” from public health

At an anti-vaccine conference last year, Kennedy said that if he became President, he would tell the National Institutes of Health, “Thank you for public service. We’re going to give infectious disease a break for about eight years.” Instead, he pledged to focus NIH’s efforts entirely on chronic disease like diabetes. Pivoting government research away from infectious diseases during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic would have disastrous consequences. And Kennedy’s claim that he will focus on chronic disease is short-sighted — chronic disease is often caused or worsened by infectious diseases like COVID. Diseases don’t take a break from threatening our lives and health, and we shouldn’t take a break from trying to prevent and mitigate diseases.

The worst public health harms in US history have been inflicted on marginalized communities when our public health systems “took a break” from protecting us. In the same way, marginalized communities would bear the brunt of a decision to abandon HHS’ responsibility to study infectious diseases.

We are dismayed by RFK Jr. becoming Secretary of HHS because the policies he supports will harm many people. This is especially true for autistic people. It is an embarrassment that our leaders chose to put RFK Jr. in a position to oversee public health given his rejection of science and his comments about autism. Our autistic lives are worth living. Our lives are worth saving. Our officials must recognize both.

The CDC, FDA, HHS and NIH have all been told to pause external communications, including publishing scientific reports, updating websites or issuing health advisories. The directive came without warning, sources told the Washington Post, and with little guidance as to how long it may last. The health agencies play a vital role in gathering and sharing critical information with the public, including on outbreaks of infectious diseases, raising the alarm over foodborne disease outbreaks and food recalls. However, DailyMail.com received its automated weekly FDA recall email at 8am ET this morning. It is not entirely unusual for incoming administrations to pause external communications temporarily, which may be done to help newly appointed officials understand the scope of information that is being released. But some said that if the pause lasts longer than a week or two then it could be seen as concerning. The new president, 78, singled out public health agencies in his inaugural address — saying that they 'do not deliver in times of disaster', referring to what many have seen as a mishandling of Covid messaging.

Hogan's Heroes Characters When You're Sick

(I was sick the other week and a bunch of my HH friends currently are, so here is this 🥺)

Colonel Robert Hogan

★ Lays you down right away or at least has you sit, asking you directly what you need- or heck, just what you want. If you ask for a lot, teases you that he's not a miracle worker but of course you end up with everything you mentioned.

★ Get hot? He'll help you remove an extra layer or two. "This is my favorite part," the colonel teasingly murmurs in your ear, pressing a kiss to your cheek.

★ Conversely, if you get cold, he’ll lend you his robe. Only his- nothing else will do.

★ He also gently brushes back any hair that may obscure your forehead to lay the back of his head along the skin and check your temperature.

★ “What do you want me to do,” he asks with that mischievous, teasing smile, “Read you a bedtime story?” “Yes.” “…All right. I do have a novel we both might like.” “Is it something that would’ve had to be smuggled into a POW camp?” “Course. If Klink saw this, he’d have it confiscated for his own entertainment.”

★ May suggest some sexual healing- feel free to swat him or lob a tissue box at him, he knows he deserves it.

★ So good with the rougher side of symptoms. He can handle taking away your tissues or the tougher descriptions of what’s going on with nods, sympathy, and strength.

★ Puts songs or stories on the radio for you to listen to if he needs to leave for any reason.

★ When he returns he reads to you, his voice low and soft with every word. His gaze slides between the page and back up to you, which brings a smile to his face.

★ His favorite thing to do is just hold your hand, running his thumb softly over the back of it, or to run his fingers through your hair as he sits by your side.

Corporal Louis LeBeau

★ Insists you don’t lift a finger. He is more than capable, after all.

★ So gentle with you as he helps you sit up, applies any remedies you may want or need, tucks you in, all with the softest eyes.

★ Overdramatic in his disposal of things like used tissues, handkerchiefs, and the like, but at least he brings a laugh about with all his expressions and avoidance of touching it all!

★ Makes you a lovely bowl of soup and insists you take the whole thing because it's good for you and he wants to see you strong again as soon as possible. Will, of course, hand feed it to you if he must (or even if not because he enjoys taking care of you).

★ Another of his favorite solutions to get you warmed up is drawing a hot bath. One which he is glad to either share with you if you're feeling right for it or just sit by your side and help you through the motions of.

Sergeant Andrew Carter

★ "Oh, I learned all about that when I was studying for pharmaceuticals. They make stuff for that. And, see, the reason it works is because it actually stops everything in there attacking from spreading. It's this really neat process where the- wait, let me go get your medicine!"

★ Lends you his fuzzy slippers because they help, alright? If nothing else because they're fun and fun takes your mind off of things and it might feel better if you're thinking about something else.

★ "How's the bed? Too hot? Too high? Too low? Is the soup ok?" You may have to shut him up with a kiss or embrace of thanks, but he worries about you, all right?

★ Reads to you from his comic books, making sure to turn them toward you between every page so you can see them, too.

★ His eyes go wide when you ask him to take off your shirt; you have to chuckle and take his hand as you tell him don’t worry, you’ve got something else on beneath your pajamas, you’re just hot.

Sergeant Richard Baker

★ "No can do," he says the moment you protest his care, scooping you up and carrying you to rest if he has to.

★ Good with his hands as he is, Richard is more than capable of crafting all sorts of remedies for you, be they tying a heat or ice pack to you or making you something hot to drink just the way you like it.

★ Turns on a radio show for you and sits by your side, imitating the characters or trying to guess with you what's going to happen until your smile returns.

★ Teases you when you pout for a kiss. “I’m not catching that!” Proceeds to still give you a kiss.

★ The best masseuse if your muscles ache- his hands are big and strong but gentle, too, easing the pain and tension from your body slowly and warmly.

★ Doesn't just lay you down, lays by your side. If you are to remind him he could get sick he will simply cite the strong constitution of him and his entire family with a proud glow and a playful gleam in his eye.

★ He simply will not be parted from you; wild horses could not drag Wilhelm Klink from your side. Which, by the way, is a direct quote from him to you as you lay in bed together.

★ Tells you about this plaster he got from a prisoner once. He's convinced it'll help you, but you're fine with the usual healing oils. If anyone is going to be soft, reverent even, as they apply them, it's him.

★ “I know how miserable you must be-” “Not with you here,” you tell him, and boy does that soften his face and raise a wide, loving smile instantly!

★ Checks your temperature by cupping your cheeks, pulling you in to rest his forehead against yours.

Sergeant Hans Schultz

★ His eyes go wide and you can see a moment of panic flash across his face. His hand twitches up and you catch the moment he resists covering his face.

★ He’s a caretaker by nature, though, so once he snaps out of that brief stupor he’s offering you a million different options, one of which will just be cuddles. Remind him he was just scared of catching it a moment ago and he flushes, telling you "I got over it."

★ Brings you breakfast in bed... to share, of course! But yours is on its own tray with a little vase and a flower.

★ Helps you change, brushes your hair, and makes sure you’re comfortable and feeling good about yourself in a time when you might feel your worst.

★ Gives you little forehead kisses after each moment of care.

★ The type to probably ask 'if it's really that bad' when he first finds out you're sick.

★ But once he does he tells you not to move “And that’s an order.” He’s serious about what he says, but of course he still gets a cheeky little smile on his face when he says it.

★ ‘Who did this to you’ energy. He asks how it happened as if you’re going to know and he’s going to be able to punish the germs somehow.

★ Has no clue what to do honestly. Will do better if you direct him or ask him for specific things.

★ Scary dog privilege unlocked- the major will give anyone who dares attempt interrupting your sleep or disturbing you in any way absolute hell.

★ “I just want company.” “You want what?” “You. Just sit with me for a little bit, please,” you reply, laying a hand over his. “Oh,” he flushes, “V- very well. I will stay.”

★ A smile creeps slowly across his face as your eyelashes flutter shut and your head droops onto his shoulder.

★ Covers you in blankets, not stopping even if you protest you’re hot until you’ve already been tucked in.

★ Naturally recommends tea as a remedy. He does have a point about this given its medicinal nature- after all, tea with honey and lemon is great for your throat, ginger tea helps with pain and nausea, lavender helps you relax and maybe even fall asleep with him by your side.

★ Considers pacing outside your door with a rifle like a literal guard when you nap, but the closer the better, right? Definitely a tactical decision and not an excuse to cuddle up to you.

★ Flushes bright red when you ask him to help you remove your layers, shakily going to work and avoiding meeting your eyes until you physically tilt his gaze back up and tell him it's alright.

White House Relaunches ‘COVID.gov’ Site to Expose Fauci, the Lab Leak, and China.

The Trump White House has drastically repurposed the COVID.gov website into a public-facing indictment of the pandemic establishment, accusing Anthony Fauci, federal agencies, and international bodies of suppressing the truth about COVID-19’s origins. The news comes as Trump tightens the screws on the Chinese Communist Party. The National Pulse understands the COVID.gov website does massive amounts of organic web traffic.

The revamped site now leads with the claim that the virus likely leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and that Fauci helped orchestrate the now-infamous “Proximal Origin” paper to shut down the lab leak theory, both stories that were first broken here on The National Pulse.

Supporting the charge: evidence of gain-of-function research funded by U.S. taxpayers through EcoHealth Alliance–another entity first exposed by The National Pulse–as well as the early illness of Wuhan lab workers, and internal NIH communications that suggest efforts to avoid transparency laws. Dr. David Morens, Fauci’s top advisor, is accused of deleting federal records, lying to Congress, and sharing nonpublic info with EcoHealth’s Peter Daszak.

EcoHealth is under federal investigation, NIH’s oversight process is labeled a “national security threat,” and HHS is accused of dragging its feet to protect high-ranking officials. Even the World Health Organization is slammed for pushing China’s interests, with the site warning that the WHO’s “Pandemic Treaty” could further compromise U.S. sovereignty.

The site also torches domestic policies: calling lockdowns medically reckless, mask mandates unscientific, and social distancing arbitrary. In closed-door testimony, Fauci reportedly admitted the six-foot rule “sort of just appeared.” Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s nursing home order is branded “medical malpractice,” with claims his administration redacted and withheld damning documents to dodge accountability.

The message on the new site is blunt: the American public wasn’t just misled—it was manipulated, censored, and endangered by a bureaucracy desperate to protect itself and its partners in Beijing. The website is available here.

Episode 13: Two stubborns under one roof

Tuesday, 10:34 am. Most people are at work at this time of day. The sun is blazing and the air conditioning systems in the buildings are running at full blast. This is also the case in the fitness center, where hardly anyone is at this time of day, let alone wants to exercise. But there are definitely people who need a little more exercise every now and then, so their inner urge often draws them here.

Detlef has also taken a liking to going to the gym. Now that he has more flexibility at work, he definitely has more time to do something for his own fitness. Meanwhile, his wife has a little more to do in the office today than usual, as Victoria had taken the day off. It was no long-kept secret that the Andrews' wanted to adopt a child.

And you're never alone for long in a gym *heavy groan* “hh, how long are you going to run around on that thing, Michael?”/ “H-hh, until my energy levels are low enough and my calves are pulling”/ “better not overdo it, you already look like a beanpole”./ “haha, h-h, so Peter hasn't complained yet… Besides, we've had a few culinary escapades lately… I can't see any more hamburgers or pizza for now…"/ ”hehe. You can treat yourself to something like that now and again, but you shouldn't eat it all the time…"/ ‘Yeah, right..’.

“And how is my son?"/ ‘Oh, pretty good, he likes the new sports club much better than the old one’/ ‘I thought so, I know the coach there from my youth, we went to a sports camp together once.’/ ‘Oh, cool… Well, he's really getting into it anyway…’/ ”I'm glad. It would be nice if he told me more about it”. Michael looked over at Detlef and nodded. “I'll tell him.”

While Detlef is working his muscles at the gym, Liane has had enough of her day at work. “Oh man, there are so many incompetent people in there… What have they learned? 'Can you please help me, Mrs. Landgraf? I don't understand this and that'. And my boss is a real beast… I'd really prefer Fiona. God rest her soul”.

“What was I even thinking when Victoria asked me if I wanted to help out on the editorial team? Sure, I like to work a lot, but writing articles where you have to make up nonsense is not my style. And they said at the bank that I was overqualified. That's nonsense, nobody is better with numbers than me.“.

But apparently they were lucky… I wouldn't be surprised if their decision suddenly resulted in unexpected offspring. There are always stories like that. The desire to have children remains unfulfilled for years and as soon as you adopt one, it suddenly works out. Hn, wait and see. Now I'm going to see if my child is at home. She said something about a job the other day.

As suspected, Katharina was home before her mother. “How were your lessons today?"/ ”Same as always, mom. Why do you ask me that every day?"/ ‘Sorry, I just want you to get good grades.’/ ‘The school has good teachers and I got good grades, what more do you want, mom?’. Katharina was often annoyed by her mother, who would like to see her daughter become a successful businesswoman one day.

Liane took her laptop and sat down at the kitchen table. She also had some 'homework' to do. “I just don't want you to miss anything“/”What do you want me to miss, mom? I go to school, come home, do my homework and you give me some extra tasks so that I hardly have time to do anything with friends here“/”you have time for that at the weekends”.

“Oh wow, the weekends, great. But that's not enough. And the breaks at school are also too short to chat about important things.” Liane looked at her daughter for a moment and raised an eyebrow. “What are important things with you, make-up tips or any stars?"/ ‘Oh man, mom, no!’ Katharina exclaimed loudly.

Katharina tried to calm herself down again. Then she continued. “We talk about the future, about what we want to do later… And occasionally about boys. Most people here already have a boyfriend or girlfriend"/ ‘You can wait for that, I only met your father when I was 20’/ ‘Great, so now I'm waiting until I'm old to finally be allowed to have a boyfriend?’ Katharina asked her mother with a horrified face. “20 is not old!”.

“Oh man, mom! The boys in our class are really okay,”./ “Ph, You say that and then they turn out to be bastards who have one girl after another. Like I said, you can wait. In exchange, you can study French for an hour after dinner.” Katharina gave her mother a pained look and whined. “But I hate French, it's so super hard”.

Just a few seconds later Detlef came home and noticed the tense mood. “OK, what's going on?"/ ‘Oh, nothing…’ said Liane in a dismissive voice. “Mam is forcing me learn French again and won't let me have a boyfriend.” When he heard that, he rolled his eyes with a slight grin. “Hn, Liane…"/ ‘What? After she graduates, she can do what she wants, but not now’/ ‘Yes, but why learn French?’.

“Because she should know the language reasonably well for our next vacation in Paris…"/ ”I don't want to go to Paris at all, Mam! I'm not interested in the Eiffel Tower or the people there"/ ‘Oh Katharina, please, don't make a fuss now’/ ”hnhn. So there are still a few months to go before the Paris vacation, something will certainly change by then,” said Detlef with a slight wink. “My husband don't support me, how nice,” his wife replied with a cheerfully ironic undertone.

“I'm not stabbing you in the back. I just think Kati should have more time for herself. She's old enough and I think that when we're in Paris, she'll manage here without us"/ ”Thanks, Dad. I know how to cook, how to clean the house or I could sleep over at a classmate's house for a while. That would be so cool”.

Liane looked at her daughter with a brief look of suspicion. “I don't doubt that you know how to cook and keep the house clean. But I know what other girls your age are like…"/ ‘Liane, don't exaggerate now, okay?’ Detlef said in a serious voice. Then Katharina looked at her mother with a broad smile. “Hnn, mom. I'd really like to know what YOU were like back then”. Liane closed her laptop, annoyed. “hh, I'm not saying anything about that"/ ‘hnhn, why not?’

Liane saw her husband grin a little again. He knew his wife's youthful sins, even if he hadn't been there for most of them. “Do you notice how curious she is again? There are just things that don't need to be put on the table here.” Detlef tilted his head slightly and nodded in agreement, “That's fine. But at least give it a thought, Liane. I'm sure we can trust our daughter”.

Katharina looked at her mother silently, with a pouty expression on her face. Then Liane rolled her eyes with a sigh. “I'll think about it, all right? What…what about that job you were talking about the other day, huh?”. Katharina wasn't very happy that her mother changed the subject, but now she finally had the opportunity to talk about this important matter for her. “Oh, that! I'd like to work at the wellness center after school"/ ‘at the wellness center?’.

“Yes, Mortimer works there too and has made really good money in a few months"/ ”Mortimer - at the wellness center? I don't believe that,” said Liane, extremely surprised. “Yes, you can believe me, and…um, mom, there's something wrong with the fridge”. Liane thought her daughter was just trying to distract her from the conversation. But after Katharina pointed out to her a second time that there was a strange hissing and smell coming from the fridge, the conversation had to wait until later.

For when they’re apart, I imagine “I’d Give Anything” from Tangled the Series (wow a HH Luci fan who also likes Tangeld, who’d have thought?) pretty much sum up Rals feelings. Could see him singing that all alone in Luci’s old room.

And currently in the fic “Don’t Deserve You” by Plumb, which I’ve said before on this blog would make a pretty damn good animatic song for these two.

I came across this song a while ago while writing this fic called “I Want To Say I’m Sorry” by Andrew Peterson which I think really encapsulates the feelings of Michael towards Lucifer post-Fall, and how he wants to make it up to him.

Then “Rescue” by Lauren Daigle kind of shows how he feels now. And his devotion to keep Luci safe (I specifically think it fits well with when Luci was taken and tortured). I also think “Protector” by City Wolf is a good one for them.

This one was a little difficult. I actually had to go searching a little. But I found “Brother” by Kodaline which seems to fit them pretty nicely now that they’re reconnected.

And “Lost Without You” by Freya Ridings kind of helps paint a picture of how Gabriel described himself as feeling… well… lost and incomplete w/o Luci there. But trying to go on like everything is normal anyways.

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network urges the Senate not to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy’s long record of spreading misinformation about autism in particular and public health in general makes him a disastrous choice for this role. His opposition to life-saving vaccines, his belief that HIV may not cause AIDS, his desire to increase the use of quack autism “treatments” and his comments about putting people taking psychiatric medication in labor camps should all be immediately disqualifying. Autistic people, the disability community, and the nation’s public health will all suffer if he is confirmed. 

Vaccines save lives

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is the founder of Children’s Health Defense, a prominent anti-vaccine group. He has claimed that no vaccine has been proven safe and effective, that the recommended vaccine schedule for children is dangerous, and that “autism does come from vaccines.”  He has also fought against COVID-19 vaccination, falsely calling an early COVID vaccine “the deadliest vaccine ever made.”

Vaccines are safe and effective. Vaccines do not cause autism. The idea that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is linked to autism comes from one fraudulent 1998 publication claiming that the vaccine had caused autistic traits in 12 children. The man responsible for this publication, Andrew Wakefield, used unethical methods and failed to disclose financial conflicts of interest. The paper did not give enough evidence for its claim that the MMR vaccine could cause autism. It was later retracted by the journal that published it, and Wakefield had his medical license revoked.

In spite of the fraudulent origins of the idea that vaccines cause autism, and in spite of decades of replicable research proving that this is not true, some people, like Kennedy, continue to perpetuate the myth. These lies do very real harm to the autistic community. Kennedy has described autistic people in insulting ways meant to inspire fear, saying that “their brain is gone” and that the purported effects of vaccination are “a Holocaust.” By working to prevent childhood vaccination, he effectively communicates the message that living as an autistic person is a worse fate than dying of measles or pertussis. 

The anti-vaccine movement has led to a wave of fake “autism cures,” many of which have very real health risks. Kennedy recently promoted two of these fake cures when he accused the FDA of suppressing “hyperbaric therapies, chelating compounds.” Hyperbaric therapy, a treatment for decompression sickness in divers, has been promoted as a fake autism cure in spite of a complete lack of evidence and associated health risks. Chelation, a treatment for heavy metal poisoning, is another fake cure, and its off-label use for autism has been associated with at least one death. 

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his allies claim that autistic people did not exist in his youth and that “I have never in my life seen a man my age with full-blown autism.” The idea that autistic people of Kennedy’s age (70) do not exist is not true. Autistic people have always been here, but before widespread autism diagnosis, we either went undiagnosed, or received different diagnoses than would be used today — for example, the outdated diagnosis of “childhood schizophrenia” for autism, or diagnosing people who today would only have an autism diagnosis with intellectual disability. Autistic people in Kennedy’s generation were all too often institutionalized or incarcerated. Even if Kennedy is telling the truth about not seeing us, that does not mean we were not there. 

Of course, Kennedy’s lies about vaccines do not just hurt autistic people. Kennedy and his nonprofit played an active role in a recent measles outbreak in American Samoa, spreading vaccine misinformation until the vaccination rate dropped low enough that 5,700 people were infected with measles, and 83 people died. Kennedy has also made false claims about COVID-19 vaccine trials and about the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, blaming unrelated deaths on COVID vaccinations. Anti-vaccine misinformation like that promoted by Kennedy’s group has led to a reduced rate of childhood vaccinations in the United States since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Lies about public health endanger everyone

Kennedy has taken other stances on public health, also based on misinformation, that disproportionately harm disabled people. He has opposed COVID-19 vaccination when people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at risk for worse outcomes if we get COVID. He wants to take fluoride out of drinking water, making everyone’s dental health worse, when people with IDD have worse dental health outcomes to begin with. He opposes the use of medication for ADHD in spite of research demonstrating that these medications are safe and can prevent deaths among people who take them. He has falsely linked antidepressants, which for many people are life-saving medication, to mass shootings. None of these beliefs are based on evidence, and all of them would make terrible public health policy. 

Kennedy’s fringe beliefs have led him to propose some truly disturbing disability policies. Notably, he has discussed sending people who struggle with addiction or take psychiatric medications to “wellness farms,” where they could labor for several years and would be forbidden to use cell phones. In the autism community, we have seen farms promoted as a housing solution before, and we recognize this idea for what it is: a proposal to institutionalize the 16% of Americans who take psychiatric medication and the 16% of Americans who struggle with substance use. 

Kennedy’s commitment to spreading misinformation about public health extends beyond developmental disability. He claims that drinking raw milk has health benefits at a time when bird flu is spreading and foodborne diseases like listeria are becoming more common. He has suggested that AIDS may not be caused by HIV, and has participated in transphobic fear-mongering by claiming that chemicals in drinking water may change children’s gender identity. Once again, there is no evidence for any of these beliefs. 

We should never take “a break” from public health

At an anti-vaccine conference last year, Kennedy said that if he became President, he would tell the National Institutes of Health, “Thank you for public service. We’re going to give infectious disease a break for about eight years.” Instead, he pledged to focus NIH’s efforts entirely on chronic disease like diabetes. Pivoting government research away from infectious diseases during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic would have disastrous consequences. And Kennedy’s claim that he will focus on chronic disease is short-sighted — chronic disease is often caused or worsened by infectious diseases like COVID. Diseases don’t take a break from threatening our lives and health, and we shouldn’t take a break from trying to prevent and mitigate diseases.

The worst public health harms in US history have been inflicted on marginalized communities when our public health systems “took a break” from protecting us. In the same way, marginalized communities would bear the brunt of a decision to abandon HHS’ responsibility to study infectious diseases.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. promotes policies that will actively harm the health of all Americans. He intends to twist the federal agencies in charge of our health into engines of misinformation. We are dismayed by his nomination not only as self-advocates and professionals in health policy, but also as human beings who want our government to safeguard our health and embrace science. The Senate must not confirm Kennedy as Secretary of HHS.

David Geier, a researcher with expertise in thimerosal and vaccine-related data, has been tapped by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to lead a study on the potential links between vaccines and autism, sparking significant controversy and debate.

The Washington Post published an article, citing anonymous officials, that criticizes Geier’s appointment, labeling him a “vaccine skeptic” and questioning the credibility and intent of the study, despite his extensive scientific background and peer-reviewed research.

The debate over the link between vaccines and autism dates back to a discredited 1998 study by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, which has fueled ongoing skepticism and emotional responses from parents, despite numerous studies by the CDC and the scientific community finding no causal link.

Critics, including former CDC officials and public health experts, express concerns about Geier’s lack of a medical degree and his history of promoting discredited theories, arguing that his appointment is irresponsible, especially amidst a growing measles outbreak in several states.

The controversy underscores the importance of transparent, unbiased research in maintaining public trust and addressing critical public health questions. The HHS and Geier have not yet responded to requests for comment, leaving the situation subject to intense scrutiny and debate.

Deflated by the resounding November defeat, the left now believes it can magically rebound by destroying Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees.

Many of Trump’s picks are well outside the usual Washington, DC/New York political, media, and corporate nexus.

But that is precisely the point—to insert reformers into a bloated, incompetent, and weaponized government who are not part of it.

Trump’s nominee for FBI director, Kash Patel, is already drawing severe criticism.

His furious enemies cannot go after his resume, since he has spent a lifetime in private, congressional, and executive billets, both in investigations and intelligence.

Instead, they claim he is too vindictive and does not reflect the ethos of the FBI.

But what will Patel not do as the new director?

He will not serially lie under oath to federal investigators as did interim FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a current Patel critic.

He will not forge an FBI court affidavit, as did convicted felon and agency lawyer Kevin Clinesmith.

He will not claim amnesia 245 times under congressional oath to evade embarrassing admissions as did former Director James Comey.

He will not partner with a foreign national to collect dirt and subvert a presidential campaign as the FBI did with Christopher Steele in 2016

He will not use the FBI to draft social media to suppress news unfavorable to a presidential candidate on the eve of an election.

He would not have suppressed FBI knowledge that Hunter Biden’s laptop was genuine—to allow the lie to spread that it was “Russian disinformation” on the eve of the 2020 election.

He will not raid the home of an ex-president with SWAT teams, surveil Catholics, monitor parents at school board meetings, or go after pro-life peaceful protestors.

Decorated combat veteran Pete Hegseth is another controversial nominee for secretary of defense.

What will Hegseth likely not do?

Go AWOL without notifying the president of a serious medical procedure as did current Secretary Lloyd Austin?

Install race and gender criteria for promotion and mandate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training?

Insinuate falsely that cabals of white supremacists had infiltrated the military—only to alienate that entire demographic and thus ensure the Pentagon came up 40,000 recruits short?

Oversee the scramble from Kabul that saw $50 billion in U.S. military equipment abandoned to Taliban terrorists?

Watch passively as a Chinese spy balloon traversed the continental United States for a week?

Allow the chairman of the Joint Chiefs to promise his Chinese communist counterpart that the People’s Liberation Army would first be informed if the President of the United States was felt to issue a dangerous order?

Rotate into the Pentagon from a defense contractor boardship and then leave office to rotate back there to leverage procurement decisions?

Oversee the Pentagon’s serial flunking of fiscal audits?

Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is certainly a maverick. He may earn the most Democratic hits, given his former liberal credentials.

But what will RFK also not do as HHS secretary?

Oversee his agencies circumventing U.S. law by transferring money to communist China to help it produce lethal gain-of-function viruses of the COVID-19 sort—in the manner of Dr. Fauci?

Organize scientists to go after critics of mandatory masking and defame them?

Give pharmaceutical companies near-lifetime exemptions from legal jeopardy for rushing into production mRNA vaccines not traditionally vetted and tested?

Leave office to monetize his HHS expertise and thus make millions from the pharmaceutical companies?

Trump’s nominee for Director of National Intelligence, former congressional representative and military veteran Tulsi Gabbard, will soon be defamed in congressional hearings.

But what has Gabbard not done?

Joined “51 former intelligence authorities” to lie on the eve of the 2020 election that the Hunter Biden laptop “had all the hallmarks” of a Russian information/disinformation operation”—in an effort to swing the election to incumbent Joe Biden?

Lied under congressional oath like former DNI James Clapper, who claimed he only gave the “least untruthful answer” in congressional testimony?

Encourage the FBI to monitor a presidential campaign in efforts to discredit it—in the manner of former CIA Director John Brennan, who lied not once but twice under oath?

Fail to foresee the American meltdown in Kabul, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, or the Houthis takeover of the Red Sea?

We are going to hear some outrageous things in the upcoming congressional confirmation hearings.

But one thing we will not hear about are the crimes, deceptions, and utter incompetence of prior and current government grandees.

The current crew, not their proposed Trump replacements, prompted the sick and tired American people to demand different people.

Voters want novel approaches to reform a government that they not only no longer trust but also now deeply fear.

I love you, family. Dad, because you are my biggest fan, and I’ll never get tired of the way you smile when I pick up a guitar and play. Mom, for being my best friend and most trusted companion, even in times when you were my only friend. That was just fine.
