When the Red Hood burst through the doors he expected his blood to run hot with adrenaline. Bullets whizzing past his mask, his fists colliding with flesh, dodging and weaving out of amature punches, some shit talking and backflips just because. You know? The staples of a vigilante breaking into a warehouse to stop a trade-off. So someone, please, please! tell him why his face burned not from exertion but due to abject mortification! Because what the actual fuck had you just said to him!
âShut up Henry heâs probably checking when heâs free, donât ruin this for me.â You hissed. âGod have you seen his thighsâ You practically drooled. âYou think heâd crush my head with them if I asked?â
       Heâs heard enough!Â
âExcuse me?!â The mask distorted his words somewhat but the scandalized tone could not be mistaken.Â
âNo. Excuse me!â You slurred. âYou came in here, interrupted poker night, shot Kenny in the dick then propositioned me. I should be the one clutching my pearls Mr. Hood.â You ended your tirade with your finger wobbling in his general direction. âSo if you werenât serious you can leave!â You sniffed looking too upset for someone who was just salivating moments prior!
Jason stood there, eyes shifting to Kenny. He looked down at his phone and winced. He was a week early. Shipment was delayed. âUh. Sorry man.â It wasnât like Kenny was about to lose his ween. Itâs just that heâd taken to using BB guns, goons went down a heck of a lot faster with a crotch shot. He looked away from the whimpering man to you and the other three in your party.Â
You all looked like a close-knit group probably using this place as a hangout. Shit. He almost felt bad for crashing this little get-together until he clocked that you were all sporting green question-marked wristbands. Red Hood lifted his guns, looks like itâll be Crotch-shots for everyone. He walked out of the warehouse not bothering to call the cops as the five of you rolled over the ground in pain.Â
He was glad no one was there to witness that:
âMe?! Guys is he talking to me? Me? You want me! Yes! When? Right now! Man, Iâve dreamt of this!â
Needless to say the phrase âGet fuckedâ will not be used in further drug busts.
<<<Hench around and find out / Part 1

Look out, it's time for the Potted Fanon History of the one, the only...BRUCE WAYNE!
Bruce, 8: His parents were shot dead by [Someone/Joe Chill/the Mafia] outside the theatre in Park Row where they just saw Zorro. Kneeling in blood, pearls, etc etc.
Bruce, 8: Jim Gordon was the cop who responded to the scene and took care of Bruce.
Bruce, 8: Alfred takes custody of Bruce and they live in the Manor together.
Bruce, 12-16 (optional): Bruce attends school with people like Oliver Queen and Lex Luthor (at a boarding school), or Zatanna and Harvey Dent (at a regular Gotham school). Bruce is known as the cryptid who hides in the library reading forensic pathology textbooks in his free time.
Bruce, 16-18: Bruce finishes school and embarks on a Secret World Training Tour. Highlights of the Tour definitely involve the League of Assassins and probably several nameless monks. Bruce may have an intense homoerotic relationship with Minhkhoa Khan. The following individuals may be namechecked but are unlikely: [Shiva, David Cain, Henri Ducard, Richard Dragon]
Bruce, World Training Tour Edition: Bruce will first meet Talia at this time, and they may get married/conceive Damian. Do not look at the timeline too closely.
Bruce, early-mid 20s: returns to Gotham, is reminded that he is scared of bats. "Yes father, I will become...a Bat!"
Bruce, early-mid 20s: has encounter with An Individual (name varies, solidifying to 'Red Hood' these days as everyone's hung up on Jason) in the ACME Chemical company vats, the other person falls into the chemicals. The Joker is born hahahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Bruce, mid 20s: meets Superman and Clark Kent, they simultaneously figure each other's identities out. Shortly after they form the Justice League with Wonder Woman.
Bruce, mid 20s: Bruce goes out for the night to see Haly's Circus when it visits town. Graysons fall, Bruce sees crying kneeling Dick Grayson and immediately imprints on him and takes him home.
Bruce, mid 20s: Dick Grayson becomes Bruce's Ward (TM). Dick also becomes Robin. They swear an Oath (TM) by candlelight to "fight together against crime and corruption and never to swerve from the path of righteousness!" (Actually I don't think the words of the oath are that well known but I couldn't help myself)
Bruce, mid 20s: has many undetailed adventures with Dick. I cannot reinforce how big a blank hole this period is.
Bruce, early 30s ish: Bruce runs into Talia and sleeps with her again (as written by people who CAN count to 10)
Bruce, 30s: Dick gets injured during a fight. Maybe with Joker, maybe with Two-Face, quite possibly with no details. Bruce tries to ground Dick for his own good. Bruce and Dick have a big fight over Dick being an adult now and you canât tell me what to do. End result: Dick is no longer Robin and moves out (to BlĂźdhaven). Bruce immediately sulks.
Bruce, 30s: Batman parks his Batmobile in the middle of Crime Alley and comes back to find the tyres being jacked. The teenager attempting this then hits Batman with a tyre iron. Bruce, missing Dick yelling at him, is immediately charmed and takes Jason home and proceeds to instantly adopt him and make him Robin.
Bruce, 30s: Bruce learns about classism from Jason. Bruce Wayne, a man with the biggest charities running in Gotham, years of criminology experience and who travelled the poorest parts of the world in his quest for training, had never contemplated that poor people commit crime because theyâre poor and the laws are against them. This rocks his world.
Bruce, 30s: Bruce fails to call Dick to tell him about his new adopted Jason!Robin. Dick comes over to have a screaming match with Bruce in the Manor/Cave about this. These will be a regular feature of Jasonâs entire time as Robin.
Bruce, late 30s: Felipe Garzonas occurs. Bruce accuses Jason of killing Garzonas. Bruce will shortly feel intense guilt for this.
Bruce, late 30s: Jason runs away to Ethiopia and is blown by the Joker in a warehouse. Bruce arrives just out of time, to find Jason's body. He is devastated and blames both himself and Jason. He takes Jason's body back to Gotham where there is an autopsy. Joker just disappears with no trace.
Bruce, late 30s: gets more and more violent in his despair over Jason's death. Tim comes to him to explain why Batman is going off the rails and offers to be Robin.
Bruce, middle aged (don't look too closely): Bruce accepts Tim as his new Robin, however insists they are Just Coworkers. He may still be suicidal at times. He probably calls Tim 'Jason' by accident. He insists he never wants to be close to another child again.
Bruce, middle aged: Bruce comes face to face with Bane, who Breaks His Back (TM). Bruce then recovers. This is a very important moment, however any details of the recovery or who was Batman in the interim are unknown. Good job, Gotham healthcare services set up by Thomas Wayne!
Bruce, middle aged: Bruce becomes worried about Tim's parents (as he's reluctantly become attached to Tim). They are never around, which is how Tim manages to be Robin. They are definitely neglecting him. They might be abusing him! Bruce either fosters Tim because of his terrible neglectful parents OR Janet dies and Jack ends up in a coma and Bruce fosters Tim. Either way, Bruce becomes Tim's guardian.
Bruce, middle aged: there's a new crime lord in Gotham called the Red Hood. Batman must track him down. Bruce discovers that this is Jason. Jason begs for Bruce to kill the Joker to avenge his death and Bruce refuses because He Has A Code. Bruce throws a batarang at Jason's neck and slits his throat.
Bruce, JLA edition: at some point Bruce made some Protocols, or possibly some Killer Robots, just in case someone else on the Justice League goes evil. The rest of the Justice League find this out, due to this situation going wrong and the plans being activated by something. Everyone on the Justice League gets very upset with Bruce.
Bruce, middle aged: at some point Bruce adopts Dick and Tim and Cass. Details of when or where are scanty. They're his kids now. Everyone moves into the Manor (except Dick, who visits from Bludhaven every weekend to see his siblings).
Bruce, middle aged: Talia drops Damian off on the doorstep. Bruce now has a (biological) son! Unfortunately Ra's Al Ghul wants to steal his body. Damian must be protected.
Bruce, middle aged: dies. How does this happen? What are you, a cop? Fortunately Bruce being ultraprepared for anything including incipient death, he has left extensive notes about who deals with what when he's dead. Dick gets custody of Damian (but only Damian). Tim gets Wayne Enterprises.
Bruce, middle aged: returns from being lost in time (not dead). Thanks, Tim. No I will not return to being the main Batman in Gotham or take back Wayne Enterprises, it's time for me to travel the world and create Batman Incorporated in every nation on Earth!
Bruce, middle aged: eventually returns home and moves back into the Manor. Damian is now his Robin. Everyone else may still be living in the Manor, may have moved out because of Sad Conflict Drama because Tim feels like he's Just A Coworker or Cass is In Hong Kong. Dick may or may not return to Bludhaven now.
Bruce, middle aged: begins to reconcile with Jason, because he finds out about Jason's Pit Rage and trauma. Jason promises to use Rubber Bullets or to just shoot people in the knee, and says he will patrol Crime Alley because nobody else understands it and the people inside it like him. Bruce is just fine with this.
Bruce, middle aged (Damian edition): Damian dies. Bruce is extremely distraught about this due to his trauma over Jason and immediately works to hunt down a way to resurrect Damian.
Bruce, middle aged: meets Duke and seeing another teenager who is trying to fight crime, immediately brings him home to foster/adopt.
Bruce, Good Dad edition: at some point Bruce has Seen A Therapist and gotten Therapy. He is now completely au fait with the latest things you read online about complex PTSD and is sorry for the hurt he has ever caused any of his children. He goes around talking his children down from disassociation and panic attacks and nightmares. He wraps them up in weighted blankets and watches TV shows You Like with them. He has a new Ace, who is a Therapy Dog for Trauma. When someone has a bad night the entire family sleeps in his giant bed as a sleepover. He is completely focused on the mental health of his children.
Bruce, Bad Dad edition: Bruce has punched Dick/Jason/Tim/Damian (choose whichever set you want) in the face and accused them of not following orders. He has rages and demanding expectations on everyone. Multiple of his children can no longer put up with it any more. He does bad things to them and says it's for their own good.
Bruce, currently: Bruce is a Good Dad! Everyone is either living at the Manor or stays over after patrol regularly. They have regular movie nights. Bruce is actively running Wayne Enterprises. If he sees an unattached teenage vigilante anywhere he might adopt them and bring them home too! He looks after all the associated Gotham vigilantes and does not know what money is worth. This is hilarious as he tips 3000% or whatever on every purchase.
Bruce, currently (alternatively): Bruce is a Bad Dad! After failing his children nobody wants to be near him and he needs to apologise to all his children so they forgive him. Bruce has left Damian for Dick to raise all by himself (that's ok, Dick is really Damian's adoptive dad) and Tim to struggle with the pressure of being a high school dropout CEO of Wayne Enterprises. He is fighting with Jason over the One Killing Rule and won't compromise, even to kill the Joker, despite Jason desperately wanting that proof that Bruce loves him more than he loves the killing rule.
Bruce, currently: Bruce is dating one of Selina, Talia, Clark or Minhkhoa. Whichever on this list he is dating, he would never ever consider getting with Selina and/or Talia again (delete whoever necessary).
#potted bat fanon histories#apologies for the delay but Bruce took some effort#additions for this edition are welcomed#bruce you have done everything (and nothing)

hello and happy halloween! i havent stopped thinking about the halloween piece with pearl colette and pennywise telesphore and iâve been wondering what movies do you associate with the characters?
This is such a fun question! We all love movies, and there's a lot of influence that I take from movies in how I approach writing Kingmaker. So yeah I have thought about it- and honestly I've thought about making letterboxd lists based on the Kingmaker Histories characters. For now, here's a little sample:
Telesphore- The Grand Budapest Hotel. This movie just encapsulates the vibes of Kingmaker as a whole, but specifically for Telesphore. There's a great deal of M Gustave in Telesphore's characterisation. That shot of him sitting in the shitty little closet and eating his soup , and the quote that was like "His world stopped existing long before he came into it" have been my guiding light when I write Telesphore.
Eisen - Filth. This movie is very close to representing what I think Eisen was like when he worked for the government. Part of the reason I got so attached to Scottish Eisen in the casting process is actually because I wanted him to sound more like Bruce from Filth.
Colette- There are a lot of movies I associate with Colette, mostly the whole weirdgirl femcel canon of films like Girl Interrupted and Black Swan and Welcome to the Dollhouse. (And Pearl, obviously). The other day Henry told me that Colette was like Jane Addams in Happiness to him, and he's basically right. She's got mad 'girl from a Todd Solondz movie' vibes.
Ariadne movies - Obviously Society, because of all the body horror and classism. To me that is how she has sex (real ones know). But she's also very golden era of Hollywood to me. Like, Psycho is an Ariadne movie. Sunset Boulevard is an Ariadne movie. Cat People is an Ariadne movie. And I think @machetebisexual would be able to add to this list even further.

pearl buttons: an analysis of barb possibly having powers
Barb may have had powers. This isnât the full analysis on it bc im gonna go over it in detail in the vanishing of Will Byers analysis, but letâs take a look at all of this!
First of all, this is some pretty tiny stuff, but Barb and Henry/Edwardâs shirts are pretty similar, especially when looking at them from a distance. Barbâs shirt is also a VERY similar style to Robinâs Pennhurst shirt, right down to the same ruffles and bows- and who do they visit at Pennhurst? Victor Creel, tying Barb to Henry/the Creels yet again.
Barbâs shirt, much like Robinâs Pennhurst shirt, also has pearl buttons- Henryâs buttons arenât completely pearls, but they ARE pearlescent rather than matte white, connecting Barb and Henryâs shirts in yet another way. As well, Barb has her lightning bolt binder- not only do we see Henry being struck by lightning repeatedly, but electricity, as Iâm sure weâre all aware, is constantly associated with people who have powers, with things like the lights flickering and the fact that powers and gates affect electromagnetic fields. We can also see that Barb was not only bleeding from her nose, just like El and Henry (even out of the same nostril), but also bleeding out of her ears, which is something we see consistently when El used her powers.
Vecna was possibly trying to use Barb to open a gate just like how El opened the mothergate- how, though? By appearing as a demogorgon. Because itâs confirmed in s4 that he knew that El opened the mothergate when she was scared by the demogorgon, and that Vecna wanted to open his own gates, and so, it would make sense for him to go after other people with powers and attempt to replicate what happened with El, in the hopes of opening another mothergate, which would explain how Will and Barb got into the UD (they opened temporary gates, but didnât end up opening a full mothergate).
The shot of Barb seeing the demogorgon behind her is IDENTICAL to the shot of El seeing the demogorgon in the void except for one detail- the egg behind Elâs demogorgon which is an enigma all on its own and is something I still need to think on. Why parallel Barbâs vanishing to El opening the mothergate, right down to both of them not only having the same bloody nostril, but also having the same sort of smear pattern on the blood, if not to indicate that Barb also had powers and opened a gate because she, just like El, was scared by the demogorgon?
And I talked about this in a reblog awhile ago, but looking at the way that Barb spits out water (much like El in s2 after she awakens in the UD version of hawkins middle school), where else have we seen somebody drown/have water down their throat? Heather. Heather was shown drowning in the void, and when Barb sees the demogorgon, we donât see any sort of background behind the demogorgon despite the fact that thereâs elements of the harrington house and pool that SHOULD be visible. It seems like people who are forced into the UD by Henry, such as Barb and El and Will end up coughing up water, unlike people who go into the UD willingly via a portal- which makes me wonder if Henry is dragging them through the void/they end up going through the void when they open a portal. We even see El fall through the void in s3 into Billyâs memories, and we also see Nancy fall through the void into Henryâs memories/her vecna vision in s4.
Itâs just really interesting to me that Barb is paralleled to both Will and El, and that we donât know how she got into the UD or why her nose and ears were bleeding. Itâs difficult without being able to compare her to other victims, as sheâs the only S1 victim that we actually see in the UD, but the parallels are definitely suspicious, and Barb having powers would explain the blood and how she got to the UD and why she was targeted & details like the lighting bolts on her binder.

read on AO3 | prologue | one | two | three | four | five (1)
Being back in civilization felt like a whole different world even if their journey aboard the Black Pearl had only lasted four nights. At sea, it was easy to pretend that nothing else existed except the vast blue horizon and the seagulls. Now, the noise of the port town brought them back to reality. It especially reminded Killian of their mission.
He and Emma helped Will and the crew dock the ship while Henry thankfully stayed safely seated by the wheel keeping Mr. Gibbs company. More quickly than he expected, they dropped anchor and everyone aboard cheered over their return home. Killian smiled at their joy. His eyes found Emma and her smile in the warm sunlight was breathtaking.
âWill!â
âPapa!â
Shouts from the crowd were ignored by the crew but not by their captain. The gangplank had barely been dropped before two figures ran aboard. The crew smiled at the seemingly familiar sight as Will ran towards them and embraced them tightly.
Killian could only see the womanâs dark blonde hair, as her face was hidden in Captain Turnerâs neck and a small brown head in between the two adults.Â
Henry walked to his side and held his hook.Â
âThey missed him.â His voice was quiet and wistful and Killian felt for the boy. He knew how hard it was to watch happy families around them and know that they had none. He could only hope that he and Emma could give Henry at least a taste of what he wished for.
âAye.â
âI have our things.â Emma interrupted the heavy moment, handing over Killianâs satchel while fixing her own across her body. âWe should get going.â
âCan we at least ask Captain Turner if Henry and I can play? Just for a bit?â Standing between them, Henry shot them his most effective weapon - his pout.Â
âHenry,â Killian sighed. âIâm sure they want to spend some time together alone after so long apart.â
âBut-â
âIt just so happens,â Will interrupted Henryâs argument with a smile, âthat my wife has planned a feast to celebrate my return. It would be a shame to waste so much food on just the three of us.â
Henryâs pout was gone and a wide, brilliant smile took its place as he looked at Killian and Emma pleadingly.Â
The two adults looked at each other.Â
Killian shrugged. He wasnât too keen on losing a day where they could make progress on their journey, but he was tired and the thought of a home-cooked meal was calling to him. Emma sighed and rolled her eyes, an exasperated smile making an appearance. It was clear she didnât want to be the bad guy who would refuse such an invitation.Â
Besides, he could see that she thought the same as him.
âAre you sure?â Emma asked, looking at Will.
âVery.âÂ
Emma held eye contact for a second, looking for a lie, for doubt. Finding nothing, she turned to Henry with a smile. âYouâre a lucky kid, you know that?â
Henryâs smile grew wide and he hugged Emma tight. âYeah, I do.â He hugged Killian next. âThank you.â
Will smiled. âCome, Iâll introduce you.â
Henry Turner had a front tooth missing and he proudly explained that it was his first one. He was in fact three years younger than Henry, who boasted about his grown-up teeth, having lost his last one a month prior. Instead of jealousy, as might have been expected, the younger Henry seemed even more excited about his future grown-up teeth.
Killian was introduced as Jones and Emma as Swan, while the boys were excited at their shared name. Will presented his wife as âhis Swannâ but Elizabeth had corrected her husband, despite her blush, that she was in fact Elizabeth Turner. Their shared smiles were loving and Killian looked away from the tender moment.
The six of them walked together through the village, doing their best to avoid the crowds and the confusion while keeping the two boys in their sights.Â
It filled his heart with joy to see Henry acting like a child. There were times where Henry almost felt like another adult, already hardened by the danger they were in, having had to grow up much too fast. But now, laughing and running alongside the Turner boy, he was just like any other boy. He glanced at Emma and found her sharing his expression and smile.
He hoped this break would do them all some good.
The Turners lived in a cabin by a cliff overlooking the sea. It looked old but well cared for. A home.
âThatâs the kitchen window. I was there when I saw Papaâs ship on the horizon!â the Turner boy pointed out eagerly.
âYes, and you almost left the house in your skivvies!â Elizabeth mock-scolded her son and they all shared a fond laugh.
Once they were inside the cabin, an offer of a bath was extended to the visitors. Despite their reluctance to take advantage of the Turnerâs hospitality, they accepted on the condition that they be allowed to help with the meals, to which Elizabeth reluctantly agreed.
As they did during their stay with Elsa and Anna, Killian and Henry insisted Emma use the bath first. Henry was far more interested in playing with Henry and his wooden ship than bathing anyway.
Killian watched, as subtly as he could, as Elizabeth handed Emma soft towels, some clothing and a soap. Their eyes locked and he inhaled deeply between his partly opened lips as a soft blush tinted her cheeks.Â
For an instant a picture of Emma in a bath invaded his mind, her skin pink from the hot water, the scent of rosemary and lavender from the soap Elizabeth gave her filling his nostrils. His chest tightened and he turned away and pretended to appreciate the cabin instead. Those were definitely dangerous thoughts and heâd do well to shut them down. As he turned away, he missed the way Emmaâs eyes widened and she bit her lip before she moved to the other room.
The boysâ loud laughter broke him away from his reverie and he thankfully had the quick reflexes to catch a wobbling vase from a nearby end table as they ran past. Accident averted.
âCareful, Henry!â he called out only to be ignored as they ran to the younger boyâs room. Killian caught Willâs smile and crossed arms. âApologies, heâs usually quieter.â
âMy Henry is the same.â Will waved away his apology as he approached to stand next to him. âI think each otherâs company will do them good.â
He knew that Henry needed to be taken somewhere safe. They were supposed to follow Cygnus to Avalon and then Henry would be safe. But here and now, with the boysâ carefree laughter filling the Turner home, Killian felt guilty over taking him away from this.Â
âI agree,â Killian sighed. âBut we really must carry on our journey in the morning.â
Will nodded, understanding clear in his expression, even if Killian recognised the disappointment hidden beneath. He felt the same.
âYou know where we live. You all have an open invitation.â
âWhy are you doing this for us?âÂ
âWhy not?â Will winked before heading towards the kitchen where his wife was calling for him.
Could it really be that simple?Â
Theyâd only known each other for four days. How could Will trust virtual strangers enough to bring them into his home? With his family? How could he be so open and selfless?
Will didnât seem the kind of man to have had an easy life. Killian recalled his kinship with the ship captain. He knew there was something about him that he could trust and maybe thatâs how Will felt about them. Maybe there was something inside they all just recognised in each other. Maybe they had met for a reason.Â
But Killian wasnât well versed in talks of destiny and fate.Â
Emma returned from her bath. She looked more relaxed than before. Her hair was tied into a wet braid that fell over her shoulder and her cheeks were still pink, from the hot water he suspected. She wore a gown lent to her by Elizabeth.Â
It fit her well. It was a simple gown, a soft lavender color. Elizabeth was slightly taller than Emma and so the skirt almost hid Emmaâs bare feet. She was nothing if not practical and pulled up the sleeves from where they reached her palm. The neckline wasnât plunging by any means but, after so long covered by her armor, Killian couldnât help but notice it exposed her collarbones.
It was a lovely domestic sight, if he was honest. Perhaps too in tune with his thoughts of family and a seaside cabin. But it still took his breath away, making his heart hammer in his chest. A desire rose up in him to reach for her, hold her, make her laugh and pull her into a slow dance in the middle of the room.Â
Emma turned to him. He hoped his thoughts werenât so clearly visible in his eyes but he couldnât look away. Killian smiled and she returned it instinctively. What a sight. Killian caught his breath.
âThe water will be getting cold soon.â Emma broke the silence, the red of her cheeks deepening.
âPerhaps Henry should go first,â he suggested, not ready to leave her presence.
âI think he is doomed for a cold bath.â She grinned shyly and he mimicked her action, his eyes tracing her round cheeks. âYou go, Iâll try to get his attention while you do.âÂ
They chuckled and he tried to keep his eyes from following the movement of her lips for too long. When he looked back into her eyes, she was watching him and he felt her warm touch on his arm.
âWe have a towel for you, Jones.â Elizabeth interrupted, handing him his own towel. Killian noticed a shirt and a pair of trousers on top and he rushed to grab the bundle. âThese are Willâs, I think they should fit you.â
âThank you very much, Mrs. Turner,â Killian smiled. âYouâre far too kind.â
âAnd you, are a charmer.â She tapped his cheek with a smile. âNow, go, before the water gets cold.â She waved him away before leaving the room again.
Killian winked at Emma who shook her head amusedly as he walked away.Â
The still hot water felt like heaven on his sore muscles. It had been four grueling days at sea and it felt particularly satisfying to spend at least a few minutes relaxing in the moist heat. Not wanting Henryâs water to be cold, he hastened to clean himself.
The clothes smelled washed - not that he was surprised - and felt soft. Thankfully, they fit him perfectly. The white shirt was loose over his shoulders and the sleeves hid his brace. The trousers were made of soft fabric and stopped at the ankles. He was glad the warm weather allowed him to stay barefoot.
âJust another minute.â Killian heard Henryâs whine once he exited to the corridor. Smirking, he followed the boyâs voice.
âIn a minute the bath will be cold, Henry,â Emma informed the boy and Killian watched as she placed her hands on her hips. The younger Henry sat cross-legged on the floor holding onto the older boyâs sleeve. âYouâll be back in no time.âÂ
Killian couldnât help but imagine this domestic scene as a possibility for them. A house near the sea, toys scattered all over the floor, perhaps another child for Henry to play with. Another dangerous thought.
âBut, we were playing pirates.â Henry had never been this difficult before, but then again, he had never had the opportunity. âWe were about to defeat the kraken.â
âYeah!â Little Henry agreed, holding up a roughly hand-carved octopus.
âCome on, lad.â Killian decided to intervene. âThe quicker you go, the quicker you can come back to play.â
âBut-â Henry looked between the two adults with pleading eyes before groaning in defeat. âAlrightâŚâ He turned to his playmate. âIâll be right back.âÂ
Hastily, Henry stood from the ground and grabbed the bundle Elizabeth had already prepared for him before running to the room Killian had just left.
âMake sure you scrub! With soap!â Emma shouted after him before the door closed. She sighed before looking at Killian, defeated. âThis is going to be the quickest bath on record.â
Killian let out a bark laugh and Emma chuckled, as well. A huff of impatience from behind them caught their attention. They looked to find Little Henry with his elbows on his knees and his head on his fists. A perfect picture of childish agony.
âHeâll be back in no time, lad,â Killian reassured, crouching in front of him and pointing to his toys. âWhy donât you tell me about your crew?â
He thought he felt eyes on his back, aware of Emmaâs presence still in the room, but he made a conscious effort to pay attention to the boyâs enthusiastic explanation, instead.
As expected, barely enough time for a thorough washing had passed - only minutes really - before Henry returned to the room. His hair was wet and he was wearing clean clothes. It was really all they could ask for. Elizabeth had found some hand-me downs that she had been mending and saving for when her Henry was grown that fit Henry like a glove. They were a similar combination of a shirt and trousers that matched Killianâs clothes.Â
Just like at the Agrabahn tailor, he felt a twinge of pride at the similarity.
The boys were playing again in no time, and Emma and Killian were being actively ignored. Wanting to make good on the deal theyâd made with their hosts, they headed for the kitchen to help with their meal, bringing their clothes in with them.
âI can put your clothes on the line for the night,â Elizabeth offered, holding out her arms.
âNo, please,â Emma countered. âYouâve done enough, weâll do it.âÂ
Brown eyes clashed with green in a battle of wills that Killian found immensely entertaining to watch.Â
âAlright,â Elizabeth finally conceded, crossing her arms. âIâve already put Willâs out so just put them next to his.âÂ
The domesticity continued once they were outside. Between the calmness of the task and their shared smiles, it was like their journey had hit a pause and they were free to be⌠well, free.
Back inside, they helped with dinner while Will tended to the garden in the back of the house. Killian could see tomatoes were ready for picking. While he cut the vegetables, Emma kneaded and cut the dough into rolls.
âWhere are you two headed tomorrow?â Elizabeth asked from where she stood by the stove.
Killian and Emma shared a look before answering.
âWeâll try to find some manner of transportation in the village,â Killian said, letting his thoughts go to Roger and hoping that he and Elsa and Anna are alright. âWeâre heading east.â
âBe careful on your way,â Elizabeth warned. âTry not to cross too close to Misthaven.â
âHow so?â Emma asked.
âThe kingdom has been abandoned for a long time and a powerful witch placed a spell around it,â she explained. âIt doesnât sound good. Just be careful.â
âWe will,â Killian reassured her, finding Emmaâs gaze. It felt wrong to add another lie to their relationship with the Turners, but it would do no good to worry them. Besides, they already had more than enough experience with witches.
Will walked through the kitchen door with a basket under his arm. âWe should have potatoes soon, my love.â He kissed Elizabethâs head before placing the recently harvested vegetables on the counter.
âThank you, dear.â She returned his loving gaze.Â
Finished with her task, Emma handed the tray of rolls to Will so he could put them in the oven, before joining Killian and helping with his task. Their hosts moved seamlessly in the kitchen, completely in sync, soft and happy smiles directed at each other every time they crossed.
Killian hated to admit it, but his chest tightened with jealousy at the sight.
âHow long have you lived here?â Emma asked, curiously even as she purposefully avoided looking too long at the couple.
âAlmost a decade?â Will answered, looking to Elizabeth for confirmation.
âWe got married and wanted a family,â she agreed, a fond smile curving her lips. âWe moved here and repaired this house.â
âThankfully, we were finished by the time her belly was so big she couldnât move,â Will teased, receiving an elbow to the ribs from his wife.
âWhy here?â Killian asked.
âWe came from Port Royal, a few miles south from here,â Will answered. âIt was close enough to home while still being safe.â
âWe had to leave after we were sentenced to hang,â Elizabeth added with a hint of bitterness in her tone. But it wasnât her tone that had Emma and Killian looking at them with shock and worry. Will noticed and allowed a small smile to escape.
âElizabeth was captured during a pirate attack on our town,â Will explained. âI joined another pirate to save her. It didnât exactly go as planned.â
âYes, almost dying was never in the plan.â Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at her husband who raised his hands defensively.
âWe survived, didnât we?â She rolled her eyes and Will grinned.Â
âBarely, Jack had the worst plans and we were even worse at following them.â Her tone was fonder now, even if still exasperated.
âAye.â Will sighed now, a mournful look in his eyes. âJack became a friend along the way but he was still a pirate, and Port Royal wasnât very fond of them. Because of that, he was imprisoned and sentenced to hang the next morning.â
âThey really liked to hang people, huh?â Killian joked, with a raised eyebrow.
âYeah,â Will laughed and Elizabeth smiled wryly behind him. âThankfully, we were able to save him and he escaped. We owed him that much.â
âUnfortunately, because of that, we were deemed traitors and they wanted to arrest us.â Elizabeth stirred the pot a bit too strongly, until Willâs hand found her arm.
âJack returned the favor and took us away from Port Royal. We stayed aboard his ship for a couple of years.â Will fell quiet with those words, and Emma and Killian looked between the couple for the rest of the story.
âHe died during an attack by an old rival. We managed to get the ship to safety but he didnât make it,â Elizabeth continued in a quiet voice. âHe passed the ship onto us.â
âIt has been ours ever since. Once we decided to settle down, I decided to pull away from piracy. The Black Pearl is now a merchant ship.âÂ
âWe are thankful for the crew, too. They were Jackâs first but they cared for Will and were more than happy to make this change with us.â
âIt all worked out, then,â Emma commented quietly, like she didnât want to ruin the moment.
âI think,â Elizabeth began with a smile, âthat we worked hard to be where we are. We lost our home and we made a new one. We had hope. And it was worth it.â Will smiled back, placing a soft kiss on the back of his wifeâs hand.
âMom!â The younger Henry called from the stairs. âWhere are my swords?â
Elizabeth put on a faux-exasperated expression as she stood in the doorway. âIâll be right there, baby,â she called before turning back to the other three. âWouldnât trade this for anything in the world.â
As he had suspected, the Turners were very similar to them. They had also lost their homes. Lost friends and family. But still they persevered. It was impressive to say the least.Â
Dinner was a merry affair. Never had Killian laughed so hard in his life. They traded stories, as best they could with the near constant interruptions from the two boys. The older Henry proved to be as charming as ever and the younger was adorably funny. While Will had been relaxed during their journey, it was a whole different story while at home. He was no longer the captain, he was just Will. He wondered if there was such a distinct difference in himself.
âThis meal was delicious, Mrs. Turner,â Killian complimented as he sat back in his chair.
âAgreed,â Emma nodded, her hand holding her head. âI donât think Iâve ever eaten this well.âÂ
Elizabeth waved away the compliments. âIt was nothing special, but thank you. And please, call me Elizabeth.âÂ
They smiled and spoke at the same time. âThank you, Elizabeth.â
She smiled and grabbed the dishes. âPlease, allow us.â Killian stopped her hand, standing up.
Emma nodded. âItâs the least we can do.âÂ
âIf you insist.âÂ
Together, they took the dishes back to the kitchen leaving behind a big discussion over which game to play now that they finished eating. Standing side by side, they worked together to do the washing up.Â
By accident, Killian bumped Emmaâs hip as he moved. By no accident at all, she bumped back with a wide smile.
âYouâve been doing that a lot,â Killian commented, earning him an inquisitive look from Emma. âSmiling,â he clarified, a smile on his own face.
âOh.â She looked down at her hands self-consciously but he bumped her hip one more time to bring her attention back to him.
âI like it,â he confessed, in a lower voice. âYou have a beautiful smile.â
âIf this is you trying to get me to go easy on you for whatever game they choose, you are going to be very disappointed,â she informed him, her eyebrow raised at him pointedly.
âCome now, Emma. Have I told you a lie?â He raised his own eyebrow with a smirk.
She looked into his eyes intently and he couldnât look away. Her smile grew soft and she shook her head. âNo, I guess you havenât.âÂ
Killian was sure to have sore cheeks for the rest of his life from the way she made him smile. And he would gladly suffer it a million times more if it meant that he would be able to see her smile back at him. A beautiful smile, indeed.
âDo you know how to play crazy eights?â Henry asked from the doorway.
âAye.âÂ
âYeah.â
âYouâre on my team,â he announced. âWe are so going to win.â
They watched Henry excitedly go back to the others.
âDoes he know that crazy eights donât have teams?â Emma asked.
âApparently not,â Killian answered with a grin.
To everyoneâs surprise, Henry Turner won the game. Killian suspected his father had given him a hand but he had also been trying to help Henry win so he wouldnât cast the first stone.
So much excitement for one day had the boys yawning by the end of the game. The fire was hot, the food had been fantastic, and Killian longed for a warm bed at this point, too.Â
Of course, not even the boysâ clear need for sleep was able to stop them from wanting just one more game. Just one more story.
âWhat about you two sleep in Henryâs room and I sing you a song until you fall asleep?â Elizabeth suggested to the tired boys.
The younger Henry quickly grabbed the bigger Henryâs arm, excited. âYes! Mama sings the best songs, you have to hear it.âÂ
âAre you sure?â Killian asked, holding out his hand. Henry was their responsibility, after all.
âOf course,â she quickly reassured. âI do it every night for mine and we all know they wonât want to be apart for a second.â She then turned to the boys. âWhy donât you start getting ready for bed?â
Killian had never seen Henry so excited to go to bed. As the boys rushed down the hall, he heard the younger Henryâs quiet question.
âDoes your Mama sing you songs?â
From the corner of his eye, he watched Henry glance at Emma. âYeah. She sings good, too.â
âYou two can sleep here.â Elizabeth caught their attention as she rose from her chair. âWill will help you,â she added before following the boys. âGoodnight.â
They watched as Will moved some cushions around on the couch. âThis is quite comfortable, Iâve actually slept here a few times before,â he reassured them with a wry grin. Emma and Killian laughed, even as a hint of discomfort shone through on Emmaâs countenance. âIâll grab you some blankets and pillows.â
They were left alone and Elizabethâs soft singing reached them from the boysâ room. He caught Emmaâs gaze and he saw the same emotion reflected in her eyes.
âWe donât both have to sleep there,â Killian offered, quietly. âI can sleep on the chair.â He gestured towards the grand chair in the corner.
âThey think we are married, they expect us to sleep in the same bed.â Emmaâs tone was determined but was undermined by the way she hugged herself around the waist.
âI donât care about what they think.â His tone brooked no argument. âI donât want to make you feel uncomfortable.â
A small, relieved smile broke on her face and her arms loosened. âItâs just sleeping, I can handle it.â
âAre you sure?âÂ
She nodded, her eyes never leaving his.Â
Maybe she had been worried that heâd take advantage of the situation. Despite her proclamation of trust, it was clear that was something very new to her. Maybe his own wishes for her comfort had been enough to reassure her. Maybe it didnât matter.
He had no plans whatsoever to take advantage of her, nor was he only pretending to care. She could probably see all of that in his eyes. If he could read her, then he would assume the opposite also held true.
Will placed the pillows and blankets on the couch.
âWill you be alright?â he asked.
âMore than,â Emma reassured him.
Will nodded. âGoodnight, mates.âÂ
âGoodnight,â they said at the same time.
They were left alone. The singing had quieted and he assumed the boys had fallen asleep. A door down the corridor closed and they were left in silence.
âYou first,â Killian offered, trying to keep his nerves out of his voice.
âYeah, okay,â Emma mumbled, grabbing one of the pillows and settling on the left side of the improvised bed.Â
Once she did, he opened the blankets and helped her cover herself and the still empty side. He laid down next. The couch, while admittedly comfortable, wasnât too wide. Even with Emma laying on her side, she was still near enough for him to feel her warmth.
The silence stretched between them.
âItâs strange not to have Henry with us,â Killian commented, keeping his eyes on the ceiling.
âYeah,â Emma agreed. âThat and no stories.â
That made him smile and turn his head to her. âDo you want me to tell you a story, Swan?â he teased.
âNo,â she answered, with a smirk. âBesides, there are no stars.â She gestured towards the wooden beams of the ceiling.
âThatâs true,â he agreed, glancing at the ceiling for a second before turning an innocent smile towards her. âI guess you should sing me a song then.â
That seemed to surprise her as her grin widened. âIâm not going to sing for you.â
âOh, but I thought that was the deal,â Killian argued, matching her smile. âNo stars means that you sing a song.â
âYou are not a child, Jones, so no song for you.â She pointed at him, her finger dangerously close to his nose.
He pouted, even if it was ruined by his grin. âNot even a small one?â
She pressed her lips together to hide her smile, albeit unsuccessfully, and shook her head.
âGuess Iâll have a terrible night, then.â He sighed, defeated as he looked back up to the ceiling.Â
âDonât be so dramatic.â Emma rolled her eyes, cushioning her hands under her cheek.
âFine, fine.â He turned his head to her, his eyes soft. âGoodnight, Emma.âÂ
âGoodnight, Killian,â she whispered back, closing her eyes.
Just like the night before, it took a long time for him to fall asleep. He was acutely aware of her presence at his side, her warmth, her slowly deepening breathing and how close she was. They had never been this close without a 10 year old boy between them.
He dared to watch her in the dying firelight for only a few seconds. He watched the curve of her lips, the shape of her brow and the fluttering of her lashes. His fingers tingled with the urge to touch her cheek, to feel the softness of her hair, to pull her against him.
He pushed it all aside. That wasnât good form and his brother would have surely cuffed his ears for such ideas. He closed his eyes and tried to put it all away.
And, just like the night before, his dreams were all of her.
---
He was warm. The fire should have been out by now. The sun was shining in his eyes and there was something tickling his chin. Finally opening his eyes, he discovered the source.
Emmaâs head lay on his chest, half of her body over his. Her leg had tangled with his and her hand lay on the exposed skin of his chest. His left arm was wrapped around her waist and if he was remembering correctly, his right hand had been over hers.
This wasnât good.Â
Actually, it was fantastic⌠But no, it was not good.
He quickly lifted his left arm away from her, hoping to make their position more innocent, but the movement made her stir. He held his breath. He felt the difference in her breathing as she woke up. He really needed to breathe at some point.Â
He gave her a moment to get her bearings. Maybe he could pretend that he was still asleep and grant her the illusion of his ignorance. No such luck. Her sharp inhale was followed by her quick disentanglement. She pushed her hands against him and the couch, her arms taut, jostling both of them. He could only look up into her wide eyes.
âI-I-â She stuttered and he watched as she tried to come up with an excuse, any reason to be tangled up with him.
He could help. He couldnât bear to see her so distressed.
âIt was a small bed,â he offered in justification. âIâm glad you werenât uncomfortable.â
âHmm, yeah.â She nodded, still a little slow in the morning. âNot enough space.â
âNo need to worry, love.â He flashed her a grin. âIâm not complaining.â
Killian had hoped his teasing would be well-received, like last night. But Emmaâs panic was palpable and her hand still lay on his chest. He hoped this didnât ruin any progress they had already made.
âWhy donât I give you some time?â Killian offered, gesturing down the corridor.
Emmaâs eyes bore into his own for a moment before she nodded, finally removing her hand from his chest. He tried not to mourn the loss of her touch.
Killian stood up from the bed and took a step towards the corridor before turning back to her. âI wonât speak of this, Emma, not unless you wish to.âÂ
Her eyes were still wide where she sat on the couch and he nodded, finally moving away. He could still feel the warmth of her body, the ghost of her touch.Â
As he left the room, he thought he heard her whisper. âThank you.âÂ
---
The boys were awake by the time Killian returned to the living room, effectively ending the quiet in the seaside house. Which was not a bad thing at all. After so long, running away from villains and all sorts of dangers, it felt good to be around such innocence and joy.
Unfortunately, they did have a mission and they had already lost enough time. Henry had managed to win another hour with Little Henry with Will and Elizabethâs offer to break their fast together. As well as their offers of supplies.
How they had gotten so lucky he didnât know.
Emma had avoided his gaze until they all sat at the table together. Killian had tried to keep his more dangerous emotions bottled up, wanting to help calm her down, wanting to reassure her of his promise.Â
It seemed to have worked. She smiled.
Slowly but surely, their relationship returned to normal. There was still a hint of hesitation in her, but when she smiled, he counted that as a win.
Leaving the Turners was hard.
For Henry especially, but they had all formed such a deep connection with each other. He would miss Willâs reassurance and fun, Elizabethâs strength and care, and young Henryâs innocence and cheer. But they did have a mission.
âRemember,â Henry told the younger one with a serious expression, âIf the kraken escapes-â
âIâll call Davy Jones to come get him,â Little Henry finished with a serious nod. âJust like you taught me.â
Killian wasnât too proud to admit that the sight made him emotional. The boys had bonded quickly and he was loath to separate them. He would also miss the domesticity of the Turner home.Â
It took a while to separate the boys and Killian ended up promising to return as soon as they could. He hoped it was a promise he could keep. Henry looked at him with hopeful eyes and he sensed Emmaâs disapproval. They were all reluctant to leave.Â
The gloomy cloud over Henryâs head was displayed prominently even after they silently made the hike back down to the village. Now, if only they could find a horse, or a carriage.
Emmaâs head was covered by her hood once more and he tried to keep his eyes away from the dark green fabric while they began their search. He didnât notice the growing distance between them and the boy.
âOof!â he heard Henry exclaim. From a distance, he saw Henry with his hands on a horseâs side. Could he have bumped into it? Thankfully, heâd kept his feet under him. As they got closer, an older woman appeared from the horseâs opposite side, a concerned look on her face.
âAre you alright, dear?âÂ
âYeah,â Henry answered, a soft smile on his face as his hand reached for the animalâs head where it was nuzzling him. âI guess I didnât see your horse.â
Killian reached where Henry stood at the same time as Emma.Â
âWeâre so sorry about this,â Emma apologized, placing her hands on Henryâs shoulders. âWe lost him for a bit, there.âÂ
âNo problem at all, dear.â The woman smiled kindly as she rubbed her thumb over Henryâs cheek. âJust let me know if you folks need some help.â
âDo you know how to get to Misthaven?â Henry asked, too quick for his companions to stop him, his focus on the calm horse.Â
âAs a matter of fact,â the woman answered. âIâm headed that way myself.â She gestured to her carriage.Â
Well, this luck of theirs was getting ridiculous, Killian thought. By the look on her face, Emma seemed to agree.Â
âMy nameâs Johanna,â the woman introduced herself. âIâd be happy to give you a ride.â
âWe really donât wish to impose,â Killian tried to decline as politely as he could. The woman seemed fairly non-threatening but they surely couldnât trust another stranger.
âYou wouldnât,â Johanna reassured. âItâs a long trip by foot and I would appreciate the company and the help. Iâm certainly not getting any younger.â
Killian looked at Emma. He wasnât too eager to make the trip by foot or spend what little coin he had left on transportation, but it couldnât be this easy.
Emma looked intently at the woman. âHow do you know you can trust us?â
âI donât.â Johanna shrugged, without a waver in her smile. âBut you look like you need help and if I can help such a sweet little boy, I will.â She touched her index to Henryâs scrunched up nose. âBesides, I have no riches and you donât seem the type to harm someone for something so small.â She gestured towards her old carriage.
âWe donât,â Henry shook his head. âWe only fight villains.âÂ
Killian chuckled nervously. âWeâve been traveling for a long time, weâve seen all sorts of people along the way,â he tried to explain.
âI bet you win, donât you?â Johanna grinned at the boy.
âYeah, we always do!â Henry matched her grin.
âCome on, then.â The woman raised to her full height, a good foot shorter than Killian, urging them to follow her to the carriage. âThereâs no time to waste.âÂ
Emma kept her hands on Henryâs shoulders preventing him from following the woman, nervously looking between Johanna and her companions. Henry looked up into Emmaâs face.
âAre we really trusting her?â she asked. âDoesnât it seem strange that we were this lucky?â
âSheâs not a villain, Emma, sheâs just nice,â Henry protested but Emma was more focused on Killianâs assessment.
âWe have to be practical, Swan,â he tried to reassure. âShe is right, we need the transport and I think itâs safe to say, she is relatively harmless.â Killian watched how Johanna moved things around in the cabin of the carriage. âYou can stay inside the carriage with her and Henry while I drive.â
Emma looked into his eyes for a moment before nodding. He trusted her to keep Henry safe, she knew that. Despite his belief that they would be safe, they both knew they had to be cautious.
âOkay, yeahâŚâ Emma nodded a few extra times for emphasis, her hands clenching and unclenching on Henryâs shoulders. The boyâs head landed on her stomach so he could look at her with a smile. âYouâre right.â She returned it.
âCan we go now?â Henry asked, his gaze still on Emmaâs. âI think I smelled something sweet from inside the carriage.â His small body began shaking in excitement and Emmaâs smile widened.
Killian cursed her hood for not letting him see the entirety of it.
âI should have known youâd be easily charmed by candy,â Killian teased with a fond smile.
Henryâs put-upon innocent smile made them laugh. He felt eyes on them and he turned to see Johanna look at them with a fond smile. âAre you folks ready?â
âYeah!â Before they could stop him, Henry rushed inside the carriage with Emma following close behind.Â
âIâll take the reins,â Killian told the older woman.
âOf course, dear.â Her smile was full of understanding as she climbed inside the carriage.
The horse was black. It reminded him of Roger. Killian took his time to stroke his head before sacrificing one of the apples the Turners gave them to it. After a pat on its forehead, he took his seat with the reins safely in his hand.
âHi!â Henryâs loud exclamation startled him and it was only thanks to his careful hold that he didnât drop the reins.
Turning around, he found Henryâs head framed in a small window of the carriage behind him, a wide smile and laughs sounding from behind him. He couldnât help but smile back.
âIf I keep this open, we can still talk!â Henry pointed out, stepping aside from the opening for him to see Emma sitting in the middle with Johanna on her left and an empty seat on her right that likely belonged to Henry.Â
He found Emmaâs eyes and even in the shade of the carriage and of her hood, he could still see her bright smile towards Henry. And when she finally turned her smile towards him, well⌠he was glad to have an unlimited source of air.
âThatâs a great idea, lad.â Killian smiled, focusing on Henry. âTake a seat, my boy! Adventure awaits!â He winked at him before turning back to the road ahead. He heard his excited giggle and he ignored any strange look he got for the wide smile on his face as he urged the horse forward.Â
---
The Maritime Kingdom was just as beautiful and peaceful as he first thought. On their first day there, they had only seen the port and the limited sights of their hike to the Turnerâs home but now, their path took them through the town.Â
It was a fishing town, of course. The smell of fish and sea and salt wafted through the streets. There were men and women shouting about their fair prices for quality products and children running up and down the streets happy and free.Â
It would be a good place to settle down. To start a family.
Killian shook those thoughts away for what felt like the millionth time.
He directed the horse along dirt roads out of the town, where houses became sparser until there was only a calm forest, beautiful and colorful flowers lining their way, following Johannaâs map. There were birds and squirrels in the trees and he thought he saw a deer between the far away bushes.
Henry had, in fact, been right. Johanna had an abundance of sweets that she gladly shared with them. They looked and tasted delicious. But not even the tasty sweets were able to quiet Henry - the journey so far had been filled with him telling everyone about his and Henry Turnerâs adventures. He was glad he was keeping to more innocuous topics.
They stopped by a river to fill their canteens and have some of their rations to eat. The water was clear and reflected the equally clear sky. As Killian crouched on the river bank, he felt a prickling on the back of his neck. The water reflected a dark figure above in the sky. When he arched his neck to see it, it was gone.Â
Perhaps he was tired.Â
He was pulled back to the group by a loud laugh. Henryâs. Killian quickly looked at them to see Henry with his trousers rolled up to his knees splashing water onto Emma who was in exactly the same position, the water hiding her bare legs and her grin just as bright as the boyâs.
âWe should arrive at Misthaven tomorrow,â Johanna called his attention from his companions, smiling fondly where she had also noticed Emma and Henryâs shenanigans.
âWeâll make camp tonight,â Killian offered, a last look at his companions before storing away their belongings.
He didnât notice Johannaâs help. âThey are quite precious, arenât they?â He whipped his head towards her. âI can see you love them very much.â
His eyes went to the laughing duo unconsciously. âHmm.â He cleared his throat. âI care for them.â
Emma looked up and caught his eye. His heart pounded against his chest, and his throat resembled the Agrabahan desert. Killian was losing count of the times her mere gaze produced such a profound reaction from him. He smiled, the grin widening when Henry, catching Emma distracted, kicked water at her. He laughed as Emma grabbed Henry by the waist and pulled him into her arms, tickling him mercilessly. His laughter echoed over the clearing.
Killian could just see from the corner of his eye Johanna nod with a fond smile. Maybe her words werenât so far from the truth.
âWe should carry on!â Killian called out over their sounds of joy.
The resuming of their journey had Emma and Henry trying to tickle each otherâs bare feet until they had finally dried enough for them to slip on their shoes. Their laughter filled his heart with longing.
âWow,â Henry gasped from the side window of the carriage. âWhatâs that?â
Making sure the road ahead was clear, he turned to look at where Henry was pointing. It was a large clearing, unassuming at first. A closer look told him that the ground wasnât just barren, it was dried up, as if a great body of water had been there before. A glint out in the middle of the empty basin made Killian wonder if the sun was reflecting off just a small bit of leftover water. It was hard to imagine a lake of this size completely dried up.
âThat,â Johanna answered, her voice sounding from next to Henryâs, âwas Lake Nostos.â
The name sounded familiar but it had been a legend at best, decades old.
âIt was, once upon a time, a great lake. It was said to be able to cure curses.â
âWhat happened to it? Thereâs no water.âÂ
âThe lake was protected by a siren, who had been cursed never to leave it. But, about three decades ago, someone killed the siren and the lake dried up.â
âOh.â Henryâs quiet word was loud in the small carriage. âWhy would someone do that?â
He heard shuffling in the back seat. âSome people abuse the good of the world, Henry,â Emma spoke softly. âAll we can do is try and protect what we can as best we can.âÂ
He thought of how pertinent her words were to their situation and he wondered if she realized it. She probably did. Knowing her, she probably said it for that purpose alone.
âYeah, thatâs what heroes do,â Henry said confidently.
Henry thinking of them as heroes wasnât new. It was true that he had done a lot more good in the time heâd been with the boy than in the past 10 years, butâŚthere was still much to atone for. Killian hoped Henry understood, that for him, he would try to be one.
Thankfully, conversation quickly moved towards easier subjects. Johanna used the moment to ask Henry more about his heroic adventures while staying with the Turners and the boy was more than willing to tell her all about them.
The boy knew how to tell a story and had them laughing in no time. Killian welcomed the laughter.
Especially as the forest became darker. As they carried on, there was less noise. He had grown used to seeing and hearing the birds around them but they dwindled to nothing as they rode along. The trees were less alive. The flowers less colorful.
He tried to chalk it up to the approaching night, but even he knew it felt unnatural.
As soon as the sun set, he decided to stop. He had never been afraid of the dark, but he was carrying precious cargo now. He stopped at a clearing off the dirt road. They were quick to build a fire, not only to warm them against the cold night but also to chase away the darkness.Â
The feeling of being watched that had followed him from the river had only intensified.
âJohanna,â Henry called from where he had curled up against Killianâs chest - he had wanted to keep him close. âDo you know any stories?â
Killian and Emma smiled. The night became a little less dark.
âAs a matter of fact,â Johanna smiled fondly, tightening the blanket around her, âI do. Have you heard of the Princess and the Shepherd?â
He heard Henryâs gasp before he saw his surprised expression. âI have! Killian told me that one before.â
âIâm not surprised.â Johanna smiled at Killian. âIt is one of the most famous stories in the Enchanted Forest.â Killian nodded in recognition.
âYeah,â Henry continued, glancing at where Emma leaned against a tree next to him. âHe told us about how they fell in love and lived happily ever after after defeating the Evil Queen.â
Killian watched Johanna thin her lips, her eyes shifting away from Henryâs face. By the way the boyâs shoulders tensed, Killian knew he noticed, too.
âDid they not live happily ever after?â he asked in a small voice, looking between the adults.
âWell, they were happy,â Johanna began. A vicious protective instinct surged up in him as he tightened his arm around Henry and hoped that the older woman wouldnât keep talking. He wasnât so lucky. âBut unfortunately, it wasnât ever after.â
Henry shot sad and slightly accusatory eyes at Killian. He didnât know what to say.
âNot everyone knows this part of the story,â Johanna defended, bringing Henryâs attention back to her.
âCan you tell it to us then?â The boy asked determinedly. Killian looked at Emma and he felt her nervous energy match his.
âHmm.â The older woman looked between the other two adults before landing on Killian. He nodded, knowing the boyâs curiosity wouldnât be sated if she didnât. âSure, sweetheart.â
âAs you know, the princess married the shepherd.â Johanna sat back comfortably, warming her hands by the fire. He felt Henry burrow against him. âThey managed to thwart the Evil Queenâs plans and there was peace for a while. They were happy.â
âThen the good news spread, the queen was to have a child. An heir for the kingdom.â
Misthaven was a mystery to all. A kingdom so deserted that the news that there had been an heir told him that this story was not going to have a happy ending. He pulled Henry even closer to him.
âOn the heels of the happy news for the kingdom, dark murmurs began to spread of the Evil Queenâs return.â Killian heard Henryâs soft inhale of breath. âThere were rumors of a dark curse that she planned to unleash on the kingdom. A curse that would destroy everyoneâs happiness.â
âWhy was she doing that?â Henryâs voice was quiet, a question asked almost to himself.
âThe Evil Queen believed that the princess destroyed her chance at love when she was a young child, around your age.â
âDo you think she did it?â
âNo,â Johannaâs tone was incontestable, a strength to her belief that niggled at the back of his mind. âShe was kind and caring, she would never do such a thing.âÂ
âThen why did the Queen think she did it?â
âSometimes,â Killian answered in Johannaâs stead. âpeople let themselves be changed by grief.â He spoke from experience.
He felt Emmaâs eyes on him and when he turned to her, he saw a quiet understanding fill them. He wanted to hold her hand, feel her touch on him, an extra helping of reassurance. Henry, feeling his turbulent emotions, tightened his hold around his torso.
âDidnât the princess try to explain what happened?â Henry asked.
âShe did, but the Evil Queen refused to see reason,â Johanna answered. âShe blamed the child for her loverâs death.âÂ
Henry sighed. Johanna stopped for a moment. He knew Henry always looked for and saw the best in people, believed that everyone deserved redemption, but given what theyâd seen of Misthaven so far, Killian knew there was no room for believing in second chances in this story.Â
âOkay.â The boy nodded. âThe Evil Queen didnât believe the princess and tried to kill herâŚâ He took a deep breath. âNow, the princess is going to have a baby.â He looked at Johanna, urging her to continue.
The older woman smiled kindly over at them before nodding.
âThe kingdom was in celebration, after so many years of worry and danger, there was peace and calm and hope for the future. Even with the Evil Queenâs new threat, the royals wanted to keep hope, and wanted to keep believing that they would defeat her once more.
âThey had a baby girl,â Johannaâs eyes shifted for a moment. âThere was a grand celebration in the kingdom. The festivities lasted for a week. Everyone was happy and hopeful.â
âAnd then the Evil Queen showed up,â Henry surmised in a low tone.
Johannaâs nod was sad, a burden he hadnât recognised before. âShe did, she threatened the whole kingdom with her curse and the queen and her prince searched for a solution, something to save them all.â
âYears before, they had managed to imprison a dark sorcerer.â Killian shivered instinctively at Johannaâs words, the memories of a heart turning to ash forefront in his mind. âThey went to him for help and he told them that their baby was the answer, that she would be the one to save them. But they had to destroy the curse, or else there would be nothing to save.â
âThey made a deal with the sorcerer.â
âWhy would they do that?â Henry asked, shocked. âDonât they know dark magic is bad?â
âThey were desperate,â Johanna explained, a somber look in her face. âPeople can do crazy things for love.â
âDid they trust him?âÂ
âNooo, absolutely not,â Johanna continued, drawing out the negative to make her point. âThey knew he would want something in return, and they were prepared to give it as long as it meant keeping their daughter and their kingdom safe.â
âHow did they do it?â Emma asked, finally speaking after sitting so long in silence.
Johannaâs smile softened as she looked towards Emma for a moment, a tenderness in her eyes that surprised him. He couldnât help but think that there was something behind that smile, something important.
âThe sorcerer asked them only for a hair from each of them and to keep his presence in the dungeons a secret.âÂ
âThat seems too good to be true,â Killian commented.
âThey thought so, too.â Johanna nodded. âThey were told that it was possible that the hairs were a way to concentrate the magic of their True Love, a magic that was as powerful as it was rare. And they assumed he wanted to keep any enemies from finding him. His cage kept him powerless and while not in danger, it did leave him vulnerable.â
âDid they accept it?â Henry asked.
âThey did. They each handed him a single hair from their heads and placed a protection spell around his cage. He then told them what to do. He told them how the curse looked and where to find it.â
âHow did he know?â Killian asked suspiciously.
âThey didnât ask. I believe he had something to do with it. The queen and her prince didnât waste time with such considerations, they needed to act fast.â
âWhat was the plan?â The boyâs quiet voice asked from his cocoon within Killianâs embrace.
âThey separated. While the princess distracted the Evil Queen, her prince destroyed the curse.â
âDid it work?â
âYes.â Johannaâs smile didnât take away from the sadness in her eyes. He wondered if Henry could see it, too, or if he was just too tired. Killianâs eyes met Emmaâs and he knew she noticed. âThey destroyed the curse but the Evil Queen still managed to get to them.â She took a deep mournful breath. âWe found out the next day that she had killed them when she appeared in the courtyard with their bodies.â
Killianâs hand rested over Henryâs head, the boyâs body impossibly close to him, hoping to give him some support. There was a moment of silence and Killian focused on Henryâs breathing, looking for any indication of distress.
âWhat happened to the baby?â Emma asked, her arms around her knees.
âShe disappeared.â Johanna looked down at the ground. He could feel the shame and guilt overtake her - he had enough experience with that. âI was tasked with guarding her, along with a group of their best soldiers.â She took a deep steadying breath. âI donât know what happened, but, before I knew it, the soldiers and I were waking up from the ground and the crib was empty.â
âSomeone took herâŚâÂ
âWe looked everywhere. I heard her cry. It was coming from outside. I thought I was going crazy because I could have sworn I saw a dark figure flying away, the cries going with it.
âI couldnât stop it.â Johanna was crying now, likely reliving those moments all over again.Â
Killian watched as Emma reached out a hand towards Johannaâs arm. At the contact, Johanna looked up, their eyes meeting. The older womanâs eyes filled up with determination and relief.
He felt Emmaâs nervous energy, a soft discomfort to the strength of Johannaâs emotions.
âWhat happened to Misthaven?â Killian asked, interrupting the moment between the two.
âThe Evil Queen took over,â Johanna answered, wiping away her tears and focusing on him. âIt is a desolate, ruined kingdom. Some escaped, looking for peace. Many tried to fight, many lost, many were forced to serve her. But many still fight to this day.
âThe ones who still fight believe that the child will return to them. That she will save them.â Johannaâs eyes glanced towards Emma. âI am one of those people.â
âHow long has it been?â Henry asked, his voice hushed and tinged with tiredness.
â28 years since we lost them.â Johanna sighed, for the first time in their journey, she showed her age, the burden of time catching up to the spry older woman she had seemed to be.
Killian noticed Emmaâs frown as she looked towards the ground, a look of concentration on her face, confusion and denial. He ached to comfort her.Â
âYou were close to the family then?â Emmaâs eyes were blank as she looked up at Johanna. He could feel the spark of determination in her, a need for answers.
Johanna nodded, a quick flash of understanding in her eyes. âI was the princessâ caregiver since she was a child. I watched her grow up, it was like she was my own.âÂ
Henryâs body felt heavier against his, his steady breathing against his chest and his arms loosening around him. The boy was falling fast asleep. Carefully, he ran his hand up and down his back, hoping to grant him some comfort even in sleep.
âAnd you did the same for their daughter, didnât you?âÂ
He watched Johannaâs throat work as she swallowed, her smile sad and her eyes widening. She nodded.
âSo you know more than you say.â Her tone grew accusatory, a hint of desperation in it.
âI-â She stopped, taking a deep breath. âHer name was Emma.â He felt the air spark around them. âShe was barely half a year old before she was lost to us.â
âWhat do you remember of her?â Killian asked in a quiet voice.
Johanna closed her eyes. âShe had light green eyes, like her mothers, and there was a waft of light hair on the top of her head. She was so small but she would grasp onto your finger with an unbelievable strength.â There was a smile on her face and Killian watched as tears began to form in her eyes. âShe loved it when we spoke to her, you could see her little eyes following you. She would fall asleep to her motherâs singing.â
There was a shine of tears in Emmaâs eyes and he saw it: the lost girl who was so afraid to hope. His hand clenched as he restrained himself from reaching for her, knowing that Henryâs presence on his lap wouldnât allow it. The boy shifted but remained asleep and Killian took a deep breath to center himself.
âShe was born in the winter, on a very cold night. I remember wrapping her up tight in the blanket Granny Lucas knitted for her.â Her eyes remained closed, lost in the memory. âIt was white and soft and it had her name knitted in blue yarn. She-â
âIt wasnât blue,â Emma interrupted, her hands shuffling around a piece that he recognised as her blanket. He hadnât noticed her removing it from her satchel. âIt was purple.â
Johannaâs eyes widened as she laid eyes on the knitted piece Emma had turned towards her. Killian saw her hands shake as she looked at it for a moment longer. When her eyes found Emmaâs, there were tears streaming down her cheeks. A look of hope that seemed to take Emmaâs breath away, even if he could still see the caution in her.
âI knew it was you.â Johannaâs voice shook, her smile wide and emotional. âWhen I saw you, I just knew it. You have your motherâs chin, and eyes, and you look so much like your father.âÂ
Emma held her breath, obviously trying to stifle her emotions.
âI wanted to be sure, I didnât want to trick you or lie to you. But it is you.â
With the piece of the blanket on her lap, Emma wrapped her arms around herself. It was obvious that she wanted to push aside Johannaâs emotional response, focusing on getting her answers, on not letting hope take over.
âSo my parentsâŚtheyâre gone?â Johanna nodded. âThey didnât abandon me, then.âÂ
âNo, Emma.â The older womans voice shook, the emotion getting the better of her. âThey fought to give you a future, to allow you to grow up in a world without this evil hanging above your head. They were hoping for a victory. They had started planning your first birthday celebration.â Her smile was overwhelmingly sad.Â
âWhy didnât they stay with me? Why didnât they let someone else fight instead?â The anger in her tone, the resentment, were on full display and Killian longed to hold her, comfort her.
âI asked them the same thing, my dear,â Johanna sighed, understanding. âThey felt like it was their fault, it was their kingdom and they needed to fight for it. They were confident theyâd be successful and theyâd come home to you again.â
âThey were reckless.â Emma sat back against the tree, her eyes angry.
âThey were hopeful.â
There was silence after that. He watched, powerless, as Emma struggled with these strong emotions. She seemed relieved to have answers, to know what happened, but he could also see the way she resented them, thought it was their fault she grew up alone.Â
He understood. He felt her distress like it was his own.Â
âI think we should get some rest.â Killian spoke quietly, hoping to interrupt the moment. âWe have a long day tomorrow.â
âYes,â Johanna agreed, discreetly wiping away her tears and wrapping herself tighter in her blanket. âWe should follow the boyâs lead and recover our strength.â There was a soft smile on her face that didnât completely hide the tornado of emotions in her eyes.
Emma simply nodded, turning towards Henryâs back. He watched Johanna turn to the opposite side. His eyes found Emmaâs, sure she could see the concern behind them.
She nodded at him, the corner of her lip pulling up in an attempt at reassurance. He appreciated it more than he could express. He smiled back at her, hoping to show her his support. She understood. Of course she did.
He wrapped the blanket tighter around him and Henry and watched Emma do the same around herself. She closed her eyes and he made an effort to rest as well.
---
Emma was the first to wake the next morning. A rare occurrence but Killian assumed the complicated night before had something to do with it. He could see her from his spot against the tree as she tidied up their things in the carriage. He didnât think Johanna was asleep. She was too still and he thought she might be too lost in thought.
Henry was still asleep against him when Killian woke up. He had felt him stir and squirm during the night and decided to let him rest as much as he could. It wasnât long before the boy stirred awake. Killian was still as he looked around, realizing where they were.
âKillian?â Henry whispered in a hushed tone.
âAye, lad?â
âIs Emma okay?â The boy raised his head still keeping close to him.
âI hope so,â Killian sighed, looking towards the hooded figure by the horse. âI think itâs been a tough night for her.âÂ
âDid Johanna tell you anything else? I think I fell asleep.âÂ
Killian smiled fondly, the tip of his hook touching the tip of Henryâs scrunched up nose. âShe did.â He worried if he should be honest or if he should leave it to Emma. âShe told us about the baby, do you remember it?âÂ
Henry nodded looking around. He wondered for a moment what was going on inside his head as he spent a few minutes studying his surroundings. Then Henry spoke, in a tone that didnât beg any doubts.
âEmmaâs the baby, isnât she?â
âWhy would you think that, my boy?â
âI have noticed that, this whole trip weâre on, has been leading us to important places.â Henry sat up, next to Killian against the tree. âIt led us to Emma. It led us to Elsa and your last link to Liam, and now itâs leading us to Misthaven where a baby has been missing for a long time. I think Johanna was right and their lost child has returned to save them. Emma.â
Killian smiled fondly as Henry caught his breath after his passionate speech.
âYouâre a very clever lad, you know?â Henry looked at him with a frown to his brow but smiled shyly soon after. âWhy donât you go and give your good mornings to Emma? Iâm sure sheâd like one of your hugs.â
âYeah!â Henry quickly scrambled to stand up.
âLad.â Killian stopped the boy with a hand on his wrist. âLet Emma be the one to tell you.â
âI wonât push her.â Henry nodded solemnly.
âThank you.âÂ
They smiled at each other before Henry ran towards Emma.
âHeâs a very special boy.â
Killianâs eyes found Johannaâs from where she now sat against a rock. She turned to see Henry giving Emma a strong hug, one she desperately returned.
âYou have no idea,â Killian whispered.
âDo you think Emma will be okay?â
He nodded. âSheâs strong. It will take some time but she will.â
âI trust you and Henry will be there to help her.â Johannaâs tone was soft and her smile even softer.
âWe will.â He nodded with an unspoken promise.
Johanna smiled, throwing a last look towards where Emma and Henry were excitedly talking - well, Henry at least - before standing up. âIâll fill our canteens.â
Alone, for the first time in a week, Killian took a deep breath. If Henry was right, and he was sure he was, they needed to prepare for whatever Misthaven threw at them.
---Â
They all ate together.Â
Emma stayed fairly quiet, unless someone spoke to her directly. He was sure she had noticed his concerned looks towards her but she hadnât made an effort to acknowledge them.Â
Henry had gotten up to refill their canteens for the last time after they ate with Johanna accompanying him. Emma had made her way to the horse and carriage when Killian finished putting away their things.Â
He joined her.
He saw her look at a piece of paper, so old he was surprised it still held together. There was a sketch of a long haired woman and he was able to read the words âSnow Whiteâ on it before she put it away in her bag.
âHey.â Killian tried to keep his presence from startling her but he should know better.
âYou know, I could feel your worry from a mile away.âÂ
He was anxious that she might be annoyed with him but he noticed her lips pulled up at the corners.
âI am fine, Killian,â she assured before turning towards him.
âAre you?â
âAye.â Emma raised her eyebrow in a terrible imitation of his accent.
Killian chuckled, shaking his head. âAre you sure? I know last night was hard, but-â
âIt was,â Emma interrupted, crossing her arms. âBut Iâm glad I have answers. Now I know they didnât abandon me. I know I was loved.â She shrugged, helplessly.
His hands clenched and he focused on his words instead, hoping to give her some support.
âYou are still loved, Emma.âÂ
Her eyes whipped to his, startled by the sentiment.
âWe were brought together for a reason.â He shrugged, trying to downplay his conviction. âI think we needed each other.â
She cleared her throat, looking down before looking back at him. âHenry needed us.â
âEmma.â He tried to control his emotions but it was futile. âYou know itâs not just about this mission.â
From a distance, he heard Henryâs chatter become louder. Right in front of his eyes, he watched Emmaâs walls slam up with him on the opposite side.
âWe need to focus on whatâs coming next.â
Defeated, he sighed. âAs you wish.âÂ
âKillian,â Henry called, and Killian turned to see his excited smile. âCan I sit next to you?â
He felt Emmaâs nervous energy spike behind him. He imagined she didnât want to stay alone with Johanna in the carriage, not after last night. But he also couldnât deny the boy anything.
âOf course, lad,â Killian smiled, ruffling the boyâs hair. âBut only for a bit. We donât know what is awaiting us as we approach Misthaven.â
âDeal!â He grinned widely as he rushed to pat the horseâs side and sat down in the front seat.
âTime to go.â Killian smiled at the two women before joining the boy.
He tried to ignore the tension between their companions as they entered the carriage. The window stayed open between the inside and the outside but Henry didnât try to interrupt the environment inside it.
He suspected the boy hoped that Johanna would be able to talk to Emma and reassure her, but he didn't have the heart to try and dissuade him of the notion. He thought he heard a semblance of a conversation from inside the carriage - words like ânamesâ and âsnowâ and âcharmingâ drifting outside - but his attention was focused on the boyâs redundant game of guessing what he was describing. They were crossing through the woods, everything was either a tree or a flower.
Halfway through their ride, just as the forest around began to look withered and dead, Killian stopped so that Henry could get back inside the carriage.
As predicted, it didnât take too long before they reached a crumbling wall, being taken over by the forest around them. Killian stopped the carriage a few feet away.
Johanna was right. Misthaven was desolate and ruined. But anything they imagined paled in comparison to the reality.Â
There was utter silence among the ruins, no life inside its boundaries. He could see some of the houses closer to the walls had been burned to the ground. He wondered if it continued the further they walked into the kingdom. Someone had cemented shards of mirrors in the walls that still stood - in some of the stones from the outer wall, in the houses, even on the ground.Â
He had heard stories about the greatness of Misthaven. A light in the middle of a valley.
This was darkness.
They all exited the carriage. Killian took a moment to stroke the horseâs side before he grabbed his satchel from where Emma was handing it to him. Johanna stood next to it.
âIâm afraid I wonât be able to accompany you inside.â They all turned to the older woman.
âWhy?â Henry asked, a touch of indignation in his tone.
Johanna smiled sadly. âThe Evil Queen has barred anyone from entering the kingdom. But I suspect she is expecting the three of you.â
âSo weâre heading into a trap,â Emma surmised, looking at the ruins behind them.
âI remember Snow telling me that the Evil Queen always seemed to know things. That she could see them. I remember her asking the servants to remove the mirrors from the castle one by one,â Johanna explained.
Killian didnât question the use of âSnowâ as a name. He assumed that had something to do with their conversation inside the carriage. He looked back at the walls, more specifically at the shards of mirrors that now seemed to take on a different purpose. A new danger.
âShe can see us,â Killian finished.
âI believe so.â Johanna nodded, nervously.
He heard Henry take a deep breath. âThis is where Cygnus is taking us, this is where weâre meant to be.â It felt like he was convincing himself just as much as them.
They ignored Johannaâs confusion at the mention of the constellation as they looked at each other. They have been in battle together before and won; he believed they would do it again.
âI guess weâre going in.â Emma nodded determinedly, fixing the strap of her satchel on her shoulder.
âMy dear,â Johanna began as she reached for Emma. He noticed her flinch in response. âI know this is difficult for you. I understand, truly, I do. But know this. You have my faith. You have your peopleâs faith. We believe in you.â
Emma looked uncomfortable. She still wasnât used to this sort of sentiment.
âThank you for your help, maâam.â Killian took a step forward, catching the older womanâs attention.
She nodded. âBe careful and take care of each other.â
Henry held onto his hand and took Emmaâs as well, who smiled at him.
âWe will, thank you.â Henry smiled and Emma nodded at the woman, looking more at ease.
They watched for a moment as the woman sat down on the front seat of the carriage. They turned back to the ruins just as the carriage began to move away.
They would be okay.
---
âOur guests have arrived, mirror,â Regina grinned widely as she watched Killian, Emma and the Heart of the Truest Believer, walk towards the empty space between the walls within the black frame of the mirror.
She waved her hand, willing the spell around the kingdomâs border to allow them passage. There was a maniac gleam in her eyes and an anxious spark surrounding her.
âLetâs give them a warm welcome, shall we?â

Some more concrete thoughts on Steve's advice to Robin, the triangle mirror in Nancy's ballerina box, Tammy Thompson rosemary imagery, and how this all connects to Rose Robin?? i.e I actually bothered to rewatch some scenes from s4 and I'm Noticing Things.
First of all, I just want to point out- I do believe Brenda's earrings are triangle mirrors. As you can see, these two shots have just a few moments between each other (I got frustrated a started pressing the screenshot button randomly so this was a happy accident) and her earrings clearly glint in the light.
Which leads me to going back to earlier in the episode when Steve and Robin have this conversation:
Steve advises Robin to just "be herself", which then goes into Robin making the point that she can't ask Vickie out because it's risky for a lesbian like herself. So clearly, despite it not being stated, what Robin and Steve are discussing here is heteronormativity. For valid reasons, Robin won't make her interest in Vickie known. We see it later in the pep rally:
Steve and his triangle mirror wearing date pass right by on front of Robin and Vickie.
Then we get Robin almost be honest to Vickie and then go back on it:
(also I just noticed that the Hawkins basketball team is literally called the Tigers. They spend all of s4 hunting down the Hellfire club. "The people of Hawkins being the true predators and the UD is just a reflection of its true nature" looks truer everyday. All the animal symbolism in this show is interesting because they literally spell it out to us in s4 that one of the main continuous theme is this concept of a "predator" and how the disenfranchised in society are scapegoated when the true people praying on the weak are those like Jason and Brenner. Abusers, bigots, etc etc. All the owl and tiger symbolism makes sense when you think about it- owls are nocturnal predators and so are tigers, like the UD beings whom we see are mostly active at night.)
Steve and his triangle mirror wearing date are behind Robin and Vickie while they watch Tammy perform, and let me tell you, she is clearly has. a lot of rosemary imagery.
The white and soft pink outfit. The ribbon around her waist. The lacey floral (?) gloves - similar to the wedding dress in the Creel attic. The pearly cross earrings and other pearls on her dress. Blue eye shadow which is more of a Karen-Angela thing I suppose but we also see it with Brenda.
An interesting thing I've noticed is that Steve, Robin, and Vickie joke about Tammy sounding like a Muppet- ie a puppet:
Which I don't need to explain what the symbolism behind a puppet is, but it goes with the themes of plays/performances that already exist within ST (Performing in this silly, terrible play- Henry). Particularly for women who are expected to perform in specific ways: docile, pure, and quiet. Speaking only to regurgitate what someone else is making you say.
Flash forward to Nancy and Robin planning to go to Penhurst and we get another triangle mirror in the ballerina box and the ballerina on front of it also the pink roses on the box itself
Again, the ballerina falls in line with the "performance" theme. A ballerina is a performer, not only that a particular type of feminine performer. Beautiful, graceful, and agile.
Which Robin comments that she is uncomfortable in her "Rose Weaver" outfit:
Which is interesting because you watch Robin get increasingly uncomfortable with the neckline/ribbon itself over her throat as the director talks down to them. Only when Robin stands up for both of them and calls out the directors misogyny (I mean most of what she said was lies but my point still stands), and breaks the performance after Nancy tells her to let her do most of the talking, is when they are able to talk to Victor.
All this puppet/performance imagery reminds me so much of Rosemary's Baby, how Guy Woodhouse spends the entire movie manipulating and deceiving her as if she were a puppet.
Also, random note, but Angela has little pearl like things on her earrings at the rink-o-mania (and blue eye shadow like Tammy and Brenda)

Music: Dimitri Tiomkin.
This is a bad movie, but it's one distinguished in the annals of bad movies because it was made by David O. Selznick, who as the poster shouted at moviegoers, was "The Producer Who Gave You 'GONE WITH THE WIND.'" Selznick made it to showcase Jennifer Jones, the actress who won an Oscar as the saintly Bernadette of Lourdes in The Song of Bernadette (Henry King, 1943). Selznick, who left his wife for Jones, wanted to demonstrate that she was capable of much more than the sweetly gentle piety of Bernadette, so he cast her as the sultry Pearl Chavez in this adaptation (credited to Selznick himself along with Oliver H.P. Garrett, with some uncredited help by Ben Hecht) of the novel by Niven Busch. Opposite Jones, Selznick cast Gregory Peck as the amoral cowboy Lewt McCanles, who shares a self-destructive passion with Pearl. Both actors are radically miscast. Jones does a lot of eye- and teeth-flashing as Pearl, while Peck's usual good-guy persona undermines his attempts to play rapaciously sexy. The plot is one of those familiar Western tropes: good brother Jesse (Joseph Cotten) against bad 'un Lewt, reflecting the ill-matched personalities of their parents, the tough old cattle baron Jackson McCanles (Lionel Barrymore) and his gentle (and genteel) wife, Laura Belle (Lillian Gish). Pearl is an orphan, the improbable daughter of an improbable couple, the educated Scott Chavez (Herbert Marshall) and a sexy Indian woman (Tilly Losch), who angers him by fooling around with another man (Sidney Blackmer). Chavez kills both his wife and her lover and is hanged for it, so Pearl is sent to live with the McCanleses -- Laura Belle is Chavez's second cousin and old sweetheart -- on their Texas ranch. It's all pretentiously packaged by Selznick: not many other movies begin with both a "Prelude" and an "Overture," composed by Dimitri Tiomkin in the best overblown Hollywood style. It has Technicolor as lurid as its story, shot by three major cinematographers, Lee Garmes, Ray Rennahan, and Harold Rosson. But any attempt to generate real heat between Jones and Peck was quickly stifled by the Production Code, which even forced Selznick to introduce a voiceover at the beginning to explain that the character of the frontier preacher known as "The Sinkiller" (entertainingly played by Walter Huston) was not intended to be a representative clergyman. There are a few good moments, including an impressive tracking shot at the barbecue on the ranch in which various guests offer their opinions of Pearl, the McCanles brothers, and other things. Whether this scene can be credited to director King Vidor, who was certainly capable of it, is an open question, because Vidor found working with the obsessive Selznick so difficult that he quit the film. Selznick directed some scenes, as did Otto Brower, William Dieterle, Sidney Franklin, William Cameron Menzies, and Josef von Sternberg, all uncredited. The resulting melange is not unwatchable, thanks to a few good performances in secondary roles (Huston, Charles Bickford, Harry Carey), and perhaps also to some really terrible ones (Lionel Barrymore at his most florid and Butterfly McQueen repeating her fluttery air-headedness from GWTW).

I hope this isn't annoying you please ignore if it is, but do you have any paintings/fanart/photos/tv or movie references for what Evelyn would look like? I absolutely love how you describe her, but i have aphantasia so i can't for the life of me picture her properly. I love making moodboards and things to use as a guide, so if you have any pictures/fanart you dont mind sharing I would really love that :))
It's not annoying my goodness!! You're so kind! I'm glad you've been liking the fic!
I have no eye for colour pallets or moodboards however, but I do like to save photos and paintings etc. when the mood strikes me. So I have a lot. None are super exact truly, but it was more for fashions and the ~vibes~
So! Evelyn! Female England. Featuring babies! Long post ahoy!
17th century Eva pre Civil War featuring her eldest boys...
- A Genoese Noblewoman and Her Son by Anthony van Dyck c.1626 - Detail from The Balbi Children by Anthony van Dyck c.1625 - Lady Frances Cranfield, Lady Buckhurst, later Countess of Dorset by Anthony Van Dyck, 1637
Moving through to the 18th century... When you start the century with one baby and swap it for another...
- Jane Duchess of Gordon and son George by George Romney, 1778 - Mrs. John Montresor by John Singleton Copley, 1778 (I had to go for this one - the red [riding] coat right?) - Lady Boston, nee Christian Methuen by George Romney, c1775 - A Lady, said to be Madame Danloux, nursing her child in a drawing room by François Guillaume MÊnageot, c1785
Then the baby girl arrives and Oz isn't that good at studying and the entire time they're playing house there's a real feeling of 'this is just off' for about a hundred or so years. Mama's playing the role very well but boy is it exhausting.
- Mother with infant by James Francis Day, 1863 - Sewing on a button, Edouard Frère, 1882 - A Testing Question, Frederick Morgan, 1892 - Summer Hours of Childhood by Charles Lucy, 1869
More individual solo shots of art that I picked for melancholia and goth auras...
- Girl in Green by Sara Hayden, 1899 - On the Seashore by George Elgar Hicks, 1879 - Preparing for the Ball by Viktor Schramm, 1898 - The Pearl Necklace by Henry Tonks, c.1905 - Unknown Painting by Richard Johnson, c2000 - Little Brother & Little Sister by A. Rackham, 1917
And finally some actual photographs of assorted models, actresses and rich ladies from the late 19th century who I particularly was like yup. For modern day, someone like Imogen Poots I think could be neat. She has rabbit teeth, looks perpetually tired with racoon eyes and has wild hair.
My intention is that by the end of the 19th century bit by bit the constraints are cracking and the poison is leaking out just in time for the World Wars. Still purging in the years that followed... nearly there by the end of the millennium. Just stop smoking hen.
#it's much easier to find portraits of mothers and children for most of history than fathers and children#like getting the equivalent of the kids and arthur is nigh impossible...#anyway#hope this was helpful! or fun is nothing else haha#fem!england#hetalia#hws england#q&a#headcanon#op#hws america#hws canada#hws australia#hws new zealand#fem!new zealand#five eyes group#fanfic ask#historical hetalia

Super Titles Round-Up (April 1994)
This month: Superboy fights an elderly person! Supergirl fights herself! Steel fights, uhh, capitalism I guess!
Superboy #3 (April 1994)
Last issue, a cybernetically-enhanced old guy called Scavenger appeared out of nowhere and stole an ancient Hawaiian spear Superboy had been trying to protect (âtryingâ being the keyword there). Now both the Kid and the old guy head to an archeological dig to look for a gem that supposedly gives the spear vast magical powers. When they run into each other there and start fighting over the mystical artifacts, Scavenger teleports them both inside an active volcano to give himself an advantage, since he happens to be wearing a handy talisman that makes him impervious to burning alive inside volcanoes.
Scavenger manages to nab the gem and comes close to killing Superboy with it as he rants nonsensically about some mysterious âenemyâ thatâs out to get him with his âsecret societyâ (sounds like a Q guy). He also brags repeatedly about his anti-lava talisman, which wasnât such a great idea since Superboy simply snaps it off his neck and forces Scavenger to escape while swearing revenge.
So Superboy finally retrieves the spear, but the historian who was giving him shit about losing it (Dr. Kaua) still isnât happy, since he secretly wanted to use it to become a REAL Hawaiian superhero and he canât do that now that the gem ended up at the bottom of a volcano. The issue ends with Dr. Kaua moping on the beach when he randomly bumps into some sort of container that says âProperty of U.S. Navy Pearl Harbor,â which immediately blows up on his face. Be careful what you wish for and stuff...
This issue also ties into the Clone Plague storyline going on in the main Super-books: Superboy is constantly coughing and collapses right after defeating Scavenger. Dubbilex (who had a psychic phone call with the Guardian about the Plague earlier in the issue) thinks they should take him back to Project Cadmus for examination, but Superboyâs friends propose a better treatment: a sandwich, some time in bed, and a VHS tape with the pilot episode of Superboy: The Animated Series, which weâll see in the next issue.
Supergirl #3 (April 1994)
The issue starts with a distraught Supergirl showing up at Lana Langâs doorstep, saying something about how she âkilled them all.â We flash back and find out that, after discovering that LexCorpâs scientists think sheâs a dumb bimbo and lied about the tests theyâve been running on her, she impersonated one of them to infiltrate the main lab and saw the horrible truth: theyâve been growing mindless clones of her and, for some reason, dressing them up in S&M gear.
Supergirl fights the clones and ends up destroying the entire lab with them inside -- as well as âpoorâ Dr. Happersen, who was already in a wheelchair after his encounter with Bizarro and ends up buried in the rubble. Supergirl still refuses to believe that her beloved Lex Luthor Jr. had anything to do with this experiment until she remembers that he ominously told her âI wish I had a hundred of youâ (back in the Supergirl and Team Luthor one-shot) right before the âtestsâ started.
FINALLY realizing that Lex Jr. is an asshole whoâs been manipulating her all along, Supergirl morphs into an edgier new look apparently inspired by her dead S&M âsistersâ and promises sheâs gonna hurt him (but not in a fun way).
Steel #3 (April 1994)
John Henry Irons stops by his old employer, Amertek, and demands to know how the weapons he designed for them ended up in the hands of street gangs. The main guy there, Colonel Weston, acts dumb and says he has no idea whatâs going on, so John leaves Amertek and comes back later, thus giving them ample time to get a whole squad of armored goons ready to fight him. Which was... what John wanted, for some reason?
So, Steel manages to sneak into Westonâs office and burn himself a CD full of incriminating Amertek data, but then like 20 goons show up to fight him. John puts up a good fight, but eventually his armor starts overheating from being shot with too many Toastmasters and turns yellow.
This gives Weston an idea: he has John chained up and directs all the goons to shoot him with the Toastmasters at the same time to find out what his Steel armor can withstand. Thatâs when a ruptured gas line causes the entire office to blow up. John survives thanks to his armor, but so does Weston, because one of the goons somehow smelled the gas through his helmet and flew him away right in time. Miraculously, that CD with incriminating data isnât even scratched, and the issue ends with John saying heâll use it to bury Amertek.
Itâs a pretty goofy issue, and the goofiest part is that John didnât want to believe Colonel Weston was evil and feels bad about âburyingâ him, even though heâs shown to be a racist dickhead who twice says Johnâs âkindâ isnât very clever. To be fair, itâs possible he was just talking about engineers.
Hawkman #6 (February 1994)
I missed this sizeable Eradicator guest spot in the February Super Titles Round-Up, but that works out fine because he had no appearances in April â94. This is part of a storyline in which Hawkmanâs brain is hijacked by a guy called Count Viper, leaving Hawkmanâs mind trapped in Hawkwomanâs body. Using Hawkmanâs face, Viper infiltrates the Justice League of Americaâs HQ and hypnotizes Wonder Woman, Bloodwyn, and the Eradicator, who happened to be in the general area. Apparently, the Eradicator was extra-easy to hypnotize because Viper and him share the same patriotic ideals (theyâre fascists).
Of course, the heroes (and anti-hero) eventually snap out of it and help Hawkman and Hawkwoman defeat Viper and return to their proper bodies. The Eradicator was actually used as a big cliffhanger in the previous issue when he appears as a shadowy figure and Hawkman yells âSEVEN HELLS!â (thatâs âOH SHIT!â in Thanagarian). My theory is that Hawkman writer John Ostrander asked to use Superman as the third hypnotized hero and the Superman office was like âNah, but you can have his fashy knockoff if you want.â

There are situations Iâve found archiving images from a campaign when the designer client/Fashion Houseâs usage period expire. For one reason or another were not submitted in an editorial set, used on social media and/or in a branding campaign.
Case in point one image with images from other campaigns, were recently posted by my fashion client. Since their usage period expired a little over two years ago. My fashion client posting them as stories. Was a subtle hint to call, talk about the next campaign and asked during our conversation. Would I be fine with Images from this campaign selected by the editors for a feature about his house. To be published in the near future by Hearst (Harperâs Bazaar US).
This series of three images are from that campaign at Sanibel Island. They were shot on the rock filled ledge at a small fishing area on the âbridgeâ road to the Island. It was the second of a two day campaign for Heritage India Fashions, Wednesday Dec 30th, 2020.

Classic Film Festival Day 2
And we're back! For Day 2 of Cinecon 59, and although this is a 5-day festival, we don't let one minute of these precious days go to waste. So yeah, Day 2 sure was jam packed....
Boris Karloff Home Movies (1937 - 1941)
As a relative newbie to the cinephile universe, Boris Karloff is most famous to me as The Monster in Universal's classic horror films of the 1930s and 1940s. Frankenstein's monster, of course, but I also know he starred as assorted villains over the years - the Satanic priest Hjalmar Poelzig in The Black Cat (1934), the lumbering executioner in 15th century England in Tower of London (1939), and the original Imhotep in The Mummy (1932).
The short clips of home movies shown in this 15-minute presentation highlighted the man behind the monster, with shots of birthday parties, his very young daughter Sara (born on his 51st birthday, while he was at work on Son of Frankenstein (1939)), his large home and gardens, and a wide variety of friends. All clips were accompanied by biting-but-loving commentary by the now elderly Sara Karloff, who adored her father, but also saw there was something inane in the fact he owned.... goats.
Little Mickey Grogan (1927)
RKO Pictures
Director: James Leo Meehan
The first feature of the day got us off to a rip-roaring start, with this silent comedy about two semi-homeless kids, the eponymous Mickey (Frankie Darro) and his spitfire kinda best friend, Susan (Lassie Lou Ahern), who manage to solve an entire host of other people's problems, and still find their own happy ever after in the process.
First up is befriending kind-hearted factory worker, Winnie (Jobyna Ralston), who takes both children in and offers them food, a place to stay, and - gross! - a bath. As appreciative as they are, Mickey is listless and he is back on the streets in no time, now befriending an unemployed architect who lost his job because he is slowly going blind. Through a series of hapless circumstances, Mickey manages to get Winnie and Jeff (Carroll Nye) in the same room, where sparks fly, and Winnie becomes determined to help Jeff get his life back on track.
More shenanigans ensue - most perpetrated by a rather acrobatic Mickey - but we can all guess how this turns out, right? Winnie finds a way to get Jeff the medical help that will reverse his vision loss, he lands a job as an architect, and the two happily adopt their homeless benefactors.
Not much of a spoiler alert as the film's plot was delightfully predictable, and I do mean that, while it is clear from the start how things will end, the fun is watching this cast get to that end. Frankie Darro was especially impressive, with his many stunts, and Lassie Lou Ahern kept pace with him with her snappy one-liners. A joy to watch at 9am!
The Scarlet Letter (1934)
Majestic Pictures
Director: Robert G. Vignola
I read this book in high school, and remembered this: what's-her-name committed adultery and she wore a big red "A" on her chest for the rest of her life. I also remember not enjoying the book all that much, so I was pleasantly surprised by this recently restored version - the first sound adaptation of the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel every student will undoubtedly read at some point in their academic career.
In this version, the beautiful Colleen Moore takes on the role of Hester Prynne, the 17th century Massachusetts widow who has an affair with the town minister, Arthur Dimmesdale (Hardie Albright). When the unmarried Hester becomes pregnant, and will not reveal the name of her baby's father, she is forced to wear a scarlet "A" on her chest as a mark of her crime.
Hester plows onward, giving birth to her illegitimate daughter Pearl (Cora Sue Collins), and trying to make a life for the two of them in a town that shuns them. Among those who turn their backs on Hester and Pearl is Hester's long-lost husband, Roger Chillingworth (Henry B. Walthall), whom she believed died in a shipwreck years earlier, and who shows up in town the same day as her trial. Furious at her betrayal, Chillingworth makes it his mission to ruin Hester's life by letting her flail at survival.
And there's the Reverend Dimmesdale, eaten alive by guilt over the tortures inflicted on Hester by his parishioners, and her protection of him, but who can't seem to figure out a way to make things right.
It will all come to a tragic conclusion (of course - otherwise, why would the book be required reading for students everywhere?), but I still found myself enjoying the film. It was a bit slow (what classic literary masterpiece isn't?), and I did walk away with the same thought I had after reading the book - what was the point? - but I still thought the performances were strong, the set design was masterful, and there were some nice comic elements scattered throughout. Not a bad way to spend an hour or so.
Forgotten Faces (1928)
Paramount-Famous Players Lasky
Director: Victor Schertzinger
We go from dark to darker with this 1928 silent drama. And whew, I do mean dark. "Heliotrope Harry" Harlow (Clive Brook) is a successful thief and con man, who comes home early one night from a job and finds his heartless gold-digging wife, Lilly (Olga Baclanova) in bed with another man. Cool as a cucumber in the fridge, Harry whips out a gun and shoots the lover dead.
Knowing Lilly is evil, and prison is now his only destination, Harry retrieves his beloved infant daughter from a nearby bedroom, and takes her to a wealthy family, leaving her on the front step for them to find and adopt. Harry then calls on his friend and criminal partner, Froggy (a very young William Powell) and begs him to watch over his daughter, to make sure Lilly never finds her.
Fast forward 15 years, and Harry is behind bars for murder, Lilly is living in squalor, and Froggy is keeping his promise to protect Alice (Mary Brian). But that sneaky scheming Lilly - she tricks Froggy into revealing Alice's location - and Lilly can't help herself. She visits Harry in prison, and gloats that she knows where their daughter is, how wealthy her adopted family is, and she will stop at nothing to fleece Alice of everything she has.
Desperate to stop Lilly, Harry manages to break out of prison (as one could do with some ease in the 1920s), and secure a job as a butler with Alice's family. He bides his time, falling in love with his daughter all over again, and waiting for the showdown with Lilly he knows is coming.
I have to admit, I was a bit surprised at the darkness of this material. You do have it all - a heartless wife and mother only interested in money, a crime of passion (murder, no less), a family torn asunder, and a vengeful woman out to destroy her own child. It's a storyline I wouldn't expect to see in the conservative backlash of the hedonistic 1920s, but I am glad this one got made. It was fantastic. Dark. Wicked. And brutally fantastic.
What's Cookin (1942)
Universal Pictures
Director: Edward F. Cline
After two rather somber and dark films, it was time to lighten things up! And what better way to do that than with a "Jivin' Jacks and Jills" classic?
As I learned through the course of attending Cinecon, the Jivin' Jacks and Jills were a group of teenage singers and dancers that Universal Pictures cobbled together in the 1940s to put in B musicals and attract teen audiences. A very young Donald O'Connor was part of the troupe (and appears in What's Cookin'), a fact I was very excited about because I have always adored him. I grew up watching Singin' in the Rain (1952). Need I say more?
There isn't much of a plot to this film. The owners of a successful radio program, J.P. Courtney (Charles Butterworth) and his wife, Agatha (Billie Burke) are at odd over how to keep the program fresh and exciting. J.P. wants to bring in new acts; Agatha thinks the classical music that made the program popular is just fine. So by bringing in a few co-conspirators, including hapless magician Marvo the Great (Leo Carillo), the extremely popular Andrews Sisters (LaVerne, Maxene, and Patricia Andrews), and, of course, the Jivin Jacks and Jills, J.P. hopes to convince Agatha the times, they are a'changin.'
This film really was a breath of fresh air, even if it hadn't followed on the heels of two dark dramas. The musical numbers were the heart and soul, and rightfully so - they were fabulous. Why talk when you can sing and dance, I always say? I can see why these types of musicals were so popular during World War II - there really was no better way to get away from the horrors of reality than with whipped cream like this.
The Student of Prague (1926)
Sokai-Film
Director: Henrik Galeen
We close out Night 2 with probably my favorite movie of the entire weekend. I'm no student of German Expressionism (I haven't even seen The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)), but this movie was so stunningly beautiful. And so clever. And truly the stuff of nightmares.
Balduin (Conrad Veidt) is bored. He is the best swordsman in the entire city of Prague - no one even comes close - so dueling has lost its appeal. He doesn't care about going to parties with his friends anymore - how much beer can one guy drink before he tires of it anyway? And life is just... dull. Balduin wants to fall in love, but he is so wrapped up in his own listlessness, he doesn't notice the affections of Lydushka (Elizza La Porta), a waitress in the local bar. Plus, he probably wouldn't be interested anyway - Lydushka is poor, and Balduin craves riches.
That's why he accepts a weird offer from the mysterious Scapinelli (Werner Krauss), a wealthy stranger who promises to give Balduin endless riches, in exchange for one thing: Balduin's mirror reflection. It's a bizarre request, but who needs their reflection? And Scapinelli is going to hand over more money than Balduin has ever seen, so Balduin accepts, and it isn't long before he starts reaping the rewards of the deal.
He attends high society parties, where he falls in love with Comtesse Margit (Agnes Esterhazy), a wealthy heiress he saved from a horseback riding accident before he met Scapinelli (and, of course, who fell in love with the poor Balduin but he was so self absorbed he didn't see it).
But it isn't long before Balduin's reflection, wandering free, starts wreaking havoc, and Balduin is facing increasing recriminations for his double's behavior. When Balduin's mirror reflection ruins his budding romance with Margit, Balduin decides to put an end to it. At a terrible cost to him as well.
There isn't much words can do to describe this film, and how beautiful it was. How horrifying it was. It really is a masterpiece in every way. And should be more widely available.

When Billionaires the Waynes showed up trying to keep the peace together with their family company Wayne Enterprises along with the help of family friends Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox and Dr Lesile Tomkins. Dr Thomas Wayne, skilled surgeon and philanthropist, who is determon to do what he can to keep the city safer. Martha Kane was a kind gentle soul born with a wealthy family. Thomas and Martha fell in love, got married and gave birth to a son, Bruce Wayne. When he was 6, Thomas Wayne decided to run for mayor. After witch, they decided to turn Wayne Manor into an Orphanage as a Gotham Renewal Fund and Move to Wayne Enterprises, weâre the Penthouse is. Bruce fells real bummed about this and wish they could they here. 2 years later, Bruce and his parents were walking out of the movie theater, Thomas said they would take a short cut to the car, only to be lead to Crime Alley. Through the dark alley, come across a thug with a gun, demanding Marthaâs pearls. Thomas tries to protect Martha only to be both of them being shot and the thug takes the necklace. Bruce just traumatized and stood there watching his parents' deaths in front of him. Thug then points the gun on his head with a smirk on his face saying âWhatâs the matter, Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight.â The thug disappears, sparing the boy, who was nowhere to be found by the police. In the GCPD, Alfred picked up Bruce knowing what happened and stays to be Bruce's guardian. After the funeral at night, Bruce swore to his parents to avenge their deaths by spending the rest of his life dismantling all criminals.
When Bruce is 13, he discovered the Wayne Terminus train station that was located underneath Wayne Enterprises. Study about Martial Arts, Criminal Law, Chemistry, criminal psychology, Invention, computers, disguise, acrobatics, weapons, marksmanship, escape artistry from stage magician and family friend Giovanni Zatara, Combat from Ted Grant/Wildcat and detective skills from Henri Ducard. After Turning 18, Bruce would go out for a journey to learn from the masters. After months of Journey, Bruce went to North Africa, where he discovered a mysterious secret Erupoe ninjutsu under from Raâs Al Ghul. Learning other types of Ninjusu against the other student, he became good allie named Bronze Tiger. He was later trained by others members of the League like: David Cain, Slade Willson, Onyx, Hook, Thomas Blake, Ubu and Merlyn During that time he met with Talia Al Ghul, they got along at first until they began to have a secret romantic relationship. 4 years When Bruce got this far and now he has to face off one is Lady Shiva. Bruce throws Raâs sword to Raâs chest and makes a run for it carrying Shiva as the League chases after the traitor. Along the chase, swordsmen and arrow shooters attacked him. Bronze knows about this, so instead of stopping Bruce, he told him to go and sacrifice himself so Bruce and Lady Shiva can live. When Bruce takes Lady Shiva to her home, she asks why he save her. He said âWhen I was young, a dark city took my family away. But I decided to strike back leaving no more innocents to die, thatâs why I come here to extirpate my emotions to make the light to others.â After dissuasion for a while while her 3-year old daughter Cassandra Cain comes home, Bruce left North Africa as Raâs Al Ghul swore revenge and a pregnant Talia heartbroken.
Bruce Wayne, age of 22 returns to Gotham City and becomes the CEO of his familyâs company, learning the same time Captain James Gordon has been transferred here to GCPD with his family. When Alfred explains to Bruce things gone wrong in the scene in which Dr Death came to Gotham, he needs to become a symbol of Justice to strike fear into criminals. He started out as an unknown vigilante for a while but that didnât scare them. He was gonna cancel it when he dated Andria Belmont. It ended at the last minute when the mob was after her and her father. This leads Bruce over the edge, he goes to the Wayne Terminus as the same place he found as a number of Bats that live here now and turn it into a headquarters. Using custom items from the Enterprises for it along with other things and future development. Alfred and Lucius agree to keep that a secret. Now Bruce becomes what he has been training to do, starting a war against the criminal underworld, Batman! On Batman's first year of Crime Fighting, He began to take one the Gotham Underworld and Not Long soon after Lead to many clashes with Karl Helfren aka Dr Death. After Batman successfully brought down Dr Death and his empire, Batman ended up facing the insane giggling killer to use and destroy whats left of the empire and turn Gotham into his own image, The Joker!
Since then more and more costumed criminals had appeared to challenge the Dark Knight, some who even come from across the world or had lived for centuries. Some cases even both Though his mission was getting tougher and tougher, Bruce would be grateful that he would not be alone and did have allies. From Alfred, to young ward Dick Grayson who had also lost his parents and becomes Robin, The Justice League with The help of Superman, Barbra Gordon a technical hacker as Batgirl, family friend Leslie Thompkins, business manager of Wayne Enterprise Lucius Fox, and even the new and improved GCPD all led by new Police Commissioner James Gordon.
