Hot take: CC wants to get to TWP and be done with TLH because she finally realized writing in a less modern, less trendy English is too hard for her and takes too much effort. She can't reference tv shows and characters and memes etc. like she does in her modern series, and can't plagiarize classics because everyone would notice. But she HAD to milk TDA's characters for money and popularity. IMO she doesn't have one original bone in her body and is not a good writer.
i agree about twp
(though I cannot for the life of me fathom how modern times are more alluring to readers than period setting, but oh well :') )
here's a thought tho:
has she been planning it for years and TLH and TDA were both "means to an end" (which maybe would explain why QoAAD was such a dumpster fire and why TLH is so all over the place), because she wanted to get to TWP, or was she truly into TDA but only got an idea for TWP while writing it(TDA)? huh? and then was so into that that she stopped caring about TLH? (and maybe even changed it last minute? part of me still wonders if she didn't majorly change her own plans between ChoG and ChoI)
i personally won't fully agree, as I think that skill-wise, CC has some really solid arsenal, you know? (whether TLH will prove that further or make me question her is a whole other thing)
she usually does a great job at descriptions (even though the ones regarding romance scenes and appearances tend to be overdone and lenghty, because, in classic YA fashion, we need lots of swooning), and I'll insist she's actually great at creating characters. whether she always handles their arcs well, and whether or not some of them are good rep, they certainly are very alive.
think about it for a sec - we as a fandom were able to create pretty consistent images of side characters based on crumbs. also, I genuinely think her characterization of many side or minor characters is better and more full-dimensional than plenty of protagonists I've read about, especially in YA. so, there's that
however, one thing that TDA showed, at least in my opinion, is that she can't necessarily handle very complex multi-storyline plots
(although I personally loved the latter part of TMI, so?! I don't know anymore (maybe I shouldn't trust an opinion of 14 year old me for starters lol))
she's good at connecting the dots and foreshadowing, and putting together a plot, but the epic!! two worlds!! shit she tried to pull in TDA... to me it seemed like biting off more than you can chew
i agree she's milking it tho
and she has/d issues with plagiarism
