i've seen people talk shit about heid being 'weird' or 'creepy' for commenting that sephiroth has 'a 'quite the face' in powerwash sim. bros-
Tumblr media
the way i see heid's comments about sephiroth are sort of varied. i've spoken before briefly about them (tho my head was all over the place so those headcanons read like hot garbage) and re-reading it all now, i'd say -
again, heid is an unreliable narrator and he's a liar. he likes to big himself up as being 'in the right' and i could absolutely imagine him fawning over tradional heroes or shinra's well-loved soldiers to strangers (aka powerwash sim bro) as a means of being 'in the right.' he might not actually have believed sephiroth to be anything when he first saw him ( and would almost certainly know about the man going insane and murdering a bunch of people ). but the public doesn't know that, all the public knows is that sephiroth lived and died as a hero and here - we see heidegger perpetuating that lie.
did he really believe sephiroth was 'special' the moment he saw him? eh. i honestly doubt it - not rudely or to make heid even more of a villain than he already is but instead because when has heid ever been impressed immediately by someone else's presence? after seph had slashed mech in two, sure. but upon initially meeting him? no way. heid's saying that to seem like he 'has an eye' for spotting a hero. he doesn't.
his comment 'he had quite the face as well' - this isn't heid being some gross pervert and jacking it to sephiroth (and ffs ofc the fandom makes out like it is ) - this can mean a multitude of different things. it can, of course, mean he was good looking which helped his popularity ( which i believe it would partially mean ). it can also mean that sephiroth had good face - as in, he was a good 'face' of the company. sephiroth, as far as we know, was the 'perfect' hero. he was a good boy, never in trouble, a strong warrior, respectful and respected. i don't think heid is merely talking about his looks here.
however, i also do think he is. he immediately then comments on sephiroth's long hair and how ''a hero shouldn't grow their hair so long'. in one respect, this is an old fashioned view of a traditionally masculine idea of masculinity / heroism. heid sees the 'long hair' as unkempt, maybe even hippyish. but the fact he comments on seph's hair immediately after commenting on his face would have one wonder about heid even going there in the first place - aka, commenting on another man's looks.
i've alluded to heid's bisexuality before and i think he is certainly the type to think aloud and thus accidentally reveal himself to be thinking of another's looks ( hence why he does it here ). but, by saying these things, i'd by no means say that heid was 'perving' on seph or obsessed with his good looks or anything. he's literally just making a one-off comment that can mean a multitude of things.
now - what i find really interesting about this interaction are the final few lines. for one,
heid talks about the 'loss' that shinra and midgar felt over sephiroth's disappearance and seems almost humbled / sad for a moment. immediately after this, he compares sephiroth to the shinra mascot, stamp.
'and the people absolutely adored him - even more than they do our mascot, stamp!'
a literal fucking cartoon dog. the disrespect (lmao). this is heid slipping up and his absolute attitude / bitchiness / arrogance easily coming through in conversation. he compares sephiroth to a cartoon dog because that's what he equates him, too ( because sephiroth is of no longer any use to heid or the company ) - in heid's eyes, the mascot dog is worth more now.
the next line,
'they'll forget sephiroth even existed!'
again with the disrespect. this isn't heid being excited over airbuster ( tho he is and loves it ok ) - this is heid just openly being entirely uncaring for a man who betrayed shinra and went mad. outwardly, in the view of the media, the people, the powerwash sim bro (love em), heid is sad and had 'high hopes' for sephiroth. he 'admired him' and saw 'why' the people worshipped him. on the inside? privately? scratch even slightly beneath the surface and what do you get? a man who couldn't give a fuck.
