Mamoru is especially a hard one cus he does NOT have a shinsoban or kanzenban era design that's worth using as a ref
seriously Mamoru so far has been drawn once in Naoko's recent stuff! how can one be accurate if there's no reference to be accurate to?

I love the key art you can really see the similarities to Naoko's artwork, it worked well since SMC is based off the original manga story. Of course with all the details it made it harder to animate since a lot of the manga panels look better as flat images. I don't like how Akira Takahashi changed everything and made the new art a mixture of the manga and 90s anime just to appeal to those who show bias towards the 90s anime.
If the roughly translated interview of Sakou’s early production experiences gives us anything, Takahashi’s character designs for S3 were most likely the vision of S3′s director, Chiaki Kon (and it just being his artstyle too). I wouldn’t have a huge problem with it if it wasn’t... sickly bright and “cute”? I guess??? That’s just me though. Though tbh I still can’t really pinpoint my problem with it? I do know that I’ll take S1 Takahashi or his Precures over S3′s style.
HOWEVER The artstyle is kinda alright depending on the artist. I’m quite fond of the one(s) from Act 31 ^u^ It’s got that Iwata feel (though her actual cuts look weird in S3 dO YOU SEE MY PROBLEM pray for me)
During S1/2 he literally had a style that wasn’t overly detailed but still was cute? Idk what was wrong with it?

Takahashi’s style during S1/2 looked more like the Shinsoban covers too! And look how cute Usagi is! *shrugs*
It doesn’t really have the feel of the 90s anime to me? (and that depends on what style we talking about too. We talking about Tadano here? Or Ito? Tamegai? Shimogasa? ect.) . It just looks like a “cuter” “mainstream” style. A couple of my buddies say the style is more so similar to Takashi’s current project, Aikatsu.
