Similarities between Norman and Shirai

Emma and Norman are dazzlingly kind, honestly, that doesn’t resemble me at all. (x)

If I forcibly search for our (Norman and himself) similarities, only the stubbornness? (laughs) Maybe some aspects are similar, but basically, we’re different. (x)

Character design and concept

I had a lot of out-there demands (for Norman's character design). He's not the prince, he's the horse. And on top of that, (...) "angelic, and a bit ethereal" . (x)

If Norman were a prince riding the white horse, Emma would've become a princess. So I wanted to confirm it's not the case. Emma is a Knight, Norman isn't the prince protecting the princess but her support; a white horse that lets the knight move as she pleases. (x)

For certain reasons, I’d planned to show Norman as a rather absent, naïve boy – the sort that turns up in World Masterpiece Theater programs, during the Escape arc. (x)

My original plan was to keep him simple and honest-looking. (x)

Personality

Smiles a lot. When he laughs, laughs from the bottom of his heart. (x)

A genius who doesn't boast about it. Respected by all siblings, Emma and Ray included. (x)

Always thinks before he acts, but he admires Emma, so he wants to move following his emotions. (x)

Has a show-off side in him where he wouldn't expose his weakness in front of Emma, but he'd show it to Ray. To Norman, Ray is a person who understands him the most. (x)

Has a side in him that lets him subconsciously separate himself from his emotions.

The Change

Norman had only seen terrible demons, and had no reliable adult. He spent two years in loneliness. (x)

Meeting with the adults (Yugo and Lucas) helped Emma and Ray in forming a slightly different personality from Norman. (x)

When a person always puts on a smiling face and says “it’s okay”, you can’t tell if they're really okay. There are many people like that in the world. (x)

Norman had a short lifespan, he could not build the world (that Emma had desired for) without killing the demons. He tried to leave a safe world to everyone. If he had a little more lifetime left, perhaps he'd have gone a slightly different direction. (x)

It seems the only thing he'd wanted to leave behind was a new world where everyone else could live safely. (x)

If it weren't for this harsh world, Norman would've been a softer child and wouldn't be saying scary things like "Let's annihilate the demons." I think everyone has that kind of Monster hidden within their heart. (x)

The growth

I won't make them the hero and the heroine. But unrelated to that, I hope Norman's love is fulfilled. (x)

Norman likes Emma, but he also likes her with a sense of respect, so I think a little complex feeling is present there. Meaning, it should be different from the category of the love of a boy simply, only romantically loving a girl. (x)

I think it’s best to pick up both of these feelings. (x)

Norman is the character who had changed the most inside, and grown up. However, his change too was according to what was decided from the beginning: growing enough to be able to show his uncool sides, his weak sides in front of Emma; saying things like “help me.” (x)

There used to be stories like this: “Boys have things to carry on their backs. If you say something softly, people would see it as your weakness”.

From TPN, the character whose thoughts are closest to this mindset is Norman. He must appear cool in front of a girl. He mustn’t whine or complain. To save Norman is to free him from this load on his shoulders. Making him say “help me” is something I had decided before serialization, as a before/after view. (x)

Miscellaneous

I hinted at a deep connection between Ayshe and Norman, however, I cut off the subplot in the main story and got into the flow of the final chapter without being able to resolve it. But it’s not something I'd thrown away, I definitely want to pick it up somewhere. I’ll do my best to reveal it someday. (x)
