word count: 1,616
Tyler took your bag before he lead you through the door. Walking into the cottage weird. It felt the same, but it felt very different. As you were trying to take it all in, you were interrupted.
“What do you want to talk about?” Tyler asked, his arms crossing over his chest.
“Are you joking-“ you started before you calmed yourself down. You had come here to talk, not fight. “Us.”
“Do you want to sit?” He hesitated, while placing you bag on the floor.
“Can we talk outside?” Even though it was almost ten o’clock at night, you had still felt gross from the plane and you needed the fresh air.
“Sure, I actually just hung some string lights over that couch, and-,“ he stopped as he noticed the expression on your face. Your eyebrows raising, almost shocked at what he said. “It was Candace’s idea.” Your head nodded slightly, getting an explanation. Of course, it was his sister’s idea.
He led you outside to the sitting area, before running off to flip the switch, turning on the lights. It had been about a year since you had been at his house and you were shocked at how much work he had done. Not only were there multiple couches and chairs but he had even put a stone tile on the ground and in the center of the area there was a fire pit. You were busy looking at the upper corners of the large wooden trellis that covered the area, trying to decide if you could see speakers or not when Tyler came back.
“This looks really nice.” You admitted, smiling lightly, almost letting him know that you were proud of him.
“Thanks.” He smiled back at you, before the two of you sat down on the same couch, facing each other or rather waiting for one another to speak first.
“So.” You started, trying to break the tension. “I just- I hate the way we ended things, and I know why you left, but Tyler you need to realize that, to me, this is just moving too fast.” You said.
“But is it?” He asked. “I know we were only together for like a week but I have had these feelings for you for forever.” As you listened to him, you shrugged. While, yes, everything he was saying was true, it still just felt different.
“Maybe thats why it didn’t work.” You breathed. “We never actually had like a real first date.” You looked up to his eyes, but in that second a down pour of rain came out of nowhere, instantly soaking the two of you. Instantly, Tyler grabbed your hand, pulling you into the house. Even though you had just been out in the rain for a few minutes, you were drenched, and so was he.
You turned to the sliding glass door, watching the rain douse the outdoor furniture you had just been sitting on, while Tyler walked over to a hallway closet, dripping as he walked back towards you.
“Here.” He held out a towel towards you.
“Thanks.” You replied. “I should probably go get changed.” He nodded as the two of you went to your separate rooms, getting into dryer clothes. As you walked back out into the living room in fresh, dry clothing, your soaked clothes under your arm, wrapped in a towel, you made your way to Tyler’s room. As you got there, you knocked on the door. He opened it, shirtless. Quickly, you turned away, trying not to get distracted as you stuck out your hand.
“What?” Tyler asked.
“Give me your clothes, I’m going to dry them.” You said lightly, flashing him the bundle under your arm.
“You don’t have to do that.” He said, pulling a shirt over his head. You shrugged, letting him know that it was really no big deal, before making a joke about him barely being able to do his own laundry. He stuck his tongue out at you before handing you all of his clothes.
You left his room and walked down to the kitchen, where concealed in a closet, was a washer and dryer. You put the clothes in the dryer, and stared out the window for a second, just watching the rain. Trying to use it soft noise to put your mind at ease, as it was still spinning from your unfinished talk with Tyler.
“It’s raining really hard out there.” He said as you liked back into the living room.
“Yeah, I hope the power doesn’t go out.” You wondered. Tyler instantly shook his head. “Nah, that doesn’t happen up here.” He said cockily. Which made it even funnier that the second he stopped speaking all of the lights went out.
“Spoke too soon.” He mumbled, and you lightly chuckled, and while you couldn’t see him because of the lack of light, you knew he had shot you a look.
Instantly, the two of you went over to the kitchen where you knew Tyler had a few candles, they were citronella (to keep the bugs away) but still, they would do the job. He took out the flashlight on his phone and shone it at the cabinet, trying to light the way for the two of you to find the candles. And, both of you were too stubborn to stand back and let the other handle the situation, so both you were trying to find it. And, as you both reached for the candle, his hand hit yours which in turn sent the candle crashing to the ground. It’s glass holder smashed, covering the floor in shards of glass. Instantly, you went to start picking it up, despite Tyler’s protests. But, because it was dark you couldn’t see anything, and ended up cutting your hand on a piece you hadn’t seen.
“Be careful.” Tyler warned. But, it was too late. As you turned the flashlight on your cell phone on to see where the glass was, you saw a trail of blood, and it looked like the source was your hand. Instantly, you walked over the sink, carefully, grabbing a paper towel and clutching it to the cut on the side of your hand.
“Are you okay? Did you get cut anywhere else?” Tyler asked, as he helped you up onto the counter.
“No.” You confirmed, before your focus changed. “Tyler, pick it up before the dogs step on it!”
“The dogs are in the spare room, they’re not anywhere near this.” He said. “Now, let me help you.”
“I’m fine.” You said firmly, clutching your hand.
“Fucking let me help you!” He yelled, you jumped a little bit, scared by the tone he was using. “Please.” He softened. You nodded.
“I have to make sure there’s no glass in it.” He said, before gently taking the paper towel off of your hand. After thoroughly surveying your hand, Tyler nodded. “There’s no glass it in, let me go grab the first aid kit. I’ll be right back.”
“Since when do you have a first aid kit?” You asked as he ran off into the bathroom, waving off your question. A few moments later, he came back with a clear covered box in his hand, and you could see some medical supplies through the lid.
“I got a hook stuck in my hand one time when I fishing, and I didn’t have anything, so the next day I got a first aid kit.” He explained as his focus on your hand softened as he came up to look you in the eyes. You inhaled sharply as he took an alcohol wipe an rubbed it over the cut, disinfecting it.
“Sorry, this might sting.” Tyler apologized, before placing a bandage across your hand.
“You never told me that.” You were still caught up by the story he had told you. A story you had never heard before, which was weird because the two of you told each other everything. Like seriously, everything.
“Well, I was kind of embarrassed.” He laughed. “If you haven’t noticed, I’ve always been trying to impress you.”
His eyes rose to meet yours, and for the first time for a while you looked into them. It ignited the same passion that had originally brought the two of you together. But it was all too much, and you still felt like even though the two of you had just shared a sweet moment, things between the two of you were still very much unresolved.
“We should probably go to bed.” You eyes glanced down to your lap, breaking your connection and sending the two of you back into reality.
“Yeah.” He nodded. “You can sleep in my room.”
“Tyler this is your house. I can sleep in the spare room.” You reasoned.
“Please.” He tried, and maybe it was the traveling or the events of tonight but this just wasn’t a fight that was worth it to you, so you gave in. “Okay. Thanks.” You smiled, as he walked you to the door. The both of you pausing, waiting for the other to say something.
Finally, after a moment of awkward tension. He kissed your cheek and said goodnight, but watching him walk away was just something you couldn’t do.
“Tyler.” You said, grabbing his attention. “You know, it is still storming outside pretty bad and-“ Tyler didn’t need to hear anything else. That was enough for him to run back to you, literally. You were caught off guard when his lips hit your yours, but you welcomed it, pulling him into the room with you in the process.
And, whatever unresolved feelings remained between the two of you would just have to wait.
