tbh the craziest thing to me about the canadian colonial empire is that the hudsons bay company (and yes the norwesters too but You Know. 1820 happened) was effectively running an corpocracy from the 1600s until 1869. like they owned ruperts land [ed note: all current canadian land from most of ontario through to the bc/alberta border]. you know who didn’t own ruperts land? literally any actual government (ie england and then canada from 67-69 before they bought it). who made the laws at a whim and controlled the courts and was not elected and controlled all money flow and most of the official employment? one single company. and not even that, the hbc was headquartered in london england since its founding and then had its canadian offices in montreal which is a long fucking way from the northwest when you only have horses canoes and feet to get you there so really it was just like. a couple managers and whatnot who got to control this entire world. and of it wasn’t bad enough then this legacy continues to this day because in remote indigenous communities the only store is the local hbc store! who still get to charge whatever they see fit and constantly rip off people

POUR ONE OUT FOR THE WII HOMEBREW CHANNEL
Archived today due to realizing a library which they heavily rely on is almost entirely stolen code both from nintendo as well as some open source developers which removed credit
"The Wii homebrew community was all built on top of a pile of lies and copyright infringement, and it's all thanks to shagkur (who did the stealing) and the rest of the team (who enabled it and did nothing when it was discovered). Together, the developers deceived everyone into believing their work was original".

I was conceptualizing for a HBC Hatzgang thing I wanted to draw you (been listening to HBC all day *sighs dreamily* Devotion but with the Hatz)
Don’t mind the Void on that one Roy one I was trying to clean an eraser (stuff no one would notice if I didn’t point it out)
I also accidentally edited that last one so that it looked like medieval parchment paper and I thought that was cool

tell us your innermost thoughts on tim burton
hello beloved thank u for asking me this because i have many thoughts ok the obvious ones first the things he said about people of colour not fitting into his aesthetic was obvs racist but also stupid like i have this overarching opinion on celebrities that like, you don't have to say things you can be silent like surely you're not stupid enough to think that wouldn't get any backlash? and if so why say it? the same with liam neeson like babygirl you're allowed to be silent. also i think his alleged sexual exploits and the blind items about him on crazy days and nights, if true, fucking gross, also being a serial cheater is kinda cringe of him. that all being said thank you tim burton for elevating hbc to official milf status.
HOWEVER i am an ex film student so please let me be annoying as fuck about his films.
ok SO here's the thing i think his early films are SO good. like in terms of story and aesthetic and cohesion and i think they really do speak to the freaks and weirdos and they're really comforting, like they convey loneliness and being an outsider really well. edward scissorhands ESPECIALLY. and i don't want to just be one of those people that says he 'sold out' HOWEVER i think the aesthetic early on was secondary to the heart and the story etc etc but as time has gone on and he's become known for the aesthetic that's become the focus rather than the story. you know that one meme where its like winnie the pooh but evil 'just a glimpse into my twisted mind' that's how i see his films now. if im being real i think the last one i watched of his was dark shadows which everyone says is terrible but honestly i thought it was really campy and fun. anyway that meme is how i see his dumbo.
ALSO i hold a weird one sided beef with him because years ago he said he hated sequels and he wouldn't ever do them, and then clearly he was offered enough money to make beetlejuice two and suddenly changed his tune as if he'd always wanted to make a sequel like girl you're on record saying you hate them just say it was for the money no one cares
but other than this i do like his films dark shadows is in my top 5 ever and i love sweeney todd also corpse bride i just have not seen any of his recent ones due to both laziness and i've not really been arsed about them. if beetlejuice two hadnt been released during the school holidays here i'd have probably gone to see it unfortunately the idea of a busy cinema is not fun to me
I AM EDITING TO ADD i think he's very much leaning into the brand now with his like weirdo core instagram which is fine but i personally do not find it sincere it feels calculated in this decade

‘David Fincher: Interviews’ Edited by Laurence F. Knapp book highlights!!
I just finished this book and it was SOOO fucking interesting, here are some of my favourite quotes from it :))
-"Because of the horrible Aliens thing, every time I hear the name Fox, it just makes me shrivel. I lose circulation in my hands and feet and I think I'm going to become a quadruple amputee.”
-"I never thought it was scary at all. I turned to the editor and said, 'My God, what have we done? We've totally let people down in the fucking terror department; we need to go shoot some dismembered bodies. Go and see if you can get someone from a morgue and chop 'em up. "
-"Right up to when we finished, I just didn't think it was violent enough. I was like, We've got a movie called Fight Club, we might as well call it Glee Club?”
-"There was absolutely nothing fun about making the movie." He gives the matter a little more thought. "Nope," he finally decides. "Nothing."
-DRE: Is Jared Leto tired of getting the crap beaten out of him in your movies? DF: He's perfect for it, isn't he? If there is any guy you want to see get his face burned off it's him.
- So now I have kids in my daughter's school who go: "Man, I love Fight Club," and you go: "Why are your parents letting you watch that? Don't come near my kid."
-I remember being a little bit, 'Uh-oh’ And Brad's drunk and Edward's drunk and Helena's drunk and they're all like, ‘It's great and we love it' and I'm like, That's fantastic. You did notice that there were six hundred other people there who walked out ready to lynch us?'"
-You know, it's like accountants and lawyers all love The Game, and college students and perverts all like Se7en.
- Empire: You've been developing Heavy Metal and Torso, among other projects. Any idea what you're doing next? Fincher: I'm sleeping for six months! I think I'm whoring myself out to come to fly around Europe and defend my honor, but I don't honestly know.
-Look, people come up to me and say, "You started torture porn." And I say, "Fuck you."
- "So it's about fighting." And they went out and sold ads for this movie on World Wrestling Federation. [audience laughs] I said, "You know, the crowd who go to the WWF are going to be made a little uncomfortable. Certainly the opening weekend, they're going to be like, 'Dude, that was gay."
-"aside from being completely unusable, it's fantastic!" They are close to wrapping the final Swedish stint of the production before flying back to LA, where they'll take the weekend off before the last week of shooting. "That gives me two days of uncontrollable weeping," says Fincher.
-"There's a quote from a film critic that David had enlarged, framed, and hung in his conference room," says Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin. "It calls Fight Club 'amoral and Godless.' I think he'd rather have that quote than a Palme d'Or."
other random things:
- Fincher came up with “ikea boy”
- Brad Pitt riding a segway around Fincher’s office and trying to convince him to join him. this was in an interview for benjamin button, and then years later in an interview for ‘the girl with the dragon tattoo’ the interviewer says there is a segway in Fincher’s office, in this article, he is also described as a ‘Segway-riding gearhead’.
- if i took a shot every time Fincher or Ed Norton compared ‘fight club’ to ‘the graduate’, i would be dead from alcohol poisoning
- my favourite interview was ‘Forget the First Two Rules of Fight Club’ by Nev Pierce for ‘Total Film’, it was so funny and well written and interviews Fincher, Norton, Pitt and HBC. i think you can find a preview of it online but PLEASE read it if you like fight club because is so fucking good!!!

Tumblr media
Made an edit?? Idk if this would be considered a redesign or just changes or what but I was thinking about ways to make HBC Roy more "distinct" if that makes sense?
And I got hit with a big burst of inspiration so I spent like the last 2½ days making this! A white coat for the Fanroy headcanon and some green to reference Robert :> Plus the eye, because I thought it'd be neat if the scar was cult-related
And some shading too because I realize Roy was the only one without shading, and I know it's to make him look SM-accurate but it's weird when he's the only one without it, y'know?
And here's the corrupted version:
Tumblr media
We only ever see his head so I had some fun for the rest of him- didn't want to try editing the hands into claws, so he still has ball-hands
*GASP*
I WAS GONNA SCREAM BUT I DIDN’T WANT TO SO INSTEAD I RELEASED A WEIRD HIGH PITCHED TEA KETTLE NOISE
HE LOOKS AMAZING
HIS JACKET
HIS JACKET PATCHES
AND HIS EYE-
WAIT IS THAT WHAT YOUR OTHER FEW POSTS WERE ABOUT!?
OH YEAH IT’S ALL COMING TOGETHER
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS

One of my friends asked for 69 with one of our au/oc characters Lucky L Life, which happened to be There's a Good Reason These Tables are Numbered!
Once upon a time there was a man. That man doesn't matter anymore, the only thing that matters is the brightly dressed shell left behind. The runner of the most dangerous casino in the world with thrills chills and plenty of kills. Pray you never see the shining angler light of it's deck, pray you never find yourself with a pleasantly fancy note inviting you to a party. Of course though fate is never kind, and to ignore such an invitation is a danger itself, so you don your best jewels and clothes to camouflage amongst the flashing colors and wine as you give your coat to the doorman, welcomed amongst others of your nobility with a few charming words from that shell of a host. You'll sing and you'll dance and you'll make short talk, time fades fast in this dread ship so you'll forget when you've last seen the sun. Every time you step out for a breath of air it's always night, but you don't remember it being that moon last time, or the next one. It's not like there's anywhere else to go until the ship docks after all, does it ever dock? Unsure but tipsy and still ready for fun you swing back in and watch as a man dressed in fancy clothes reduced to rags stab a lion in the throat only to be devoured by the tiger. Simply clicking your tongue at this as you take another sip, you'll be mildly upset you bet wrong and you won't recall he looks a lot like one of the men you entered with. Giggle and tease as you win a few hands of blackjacks, find some facade of love in the bathroom of the bar, stare in the mirror and wonder why your makeup is runny and faded. Take another drink, and another, it's so sweet like punch. Loose yourself in the flashing lights but always making sure to never run out of cash. Supplies will dwindle though, as time slips away from you there's no way to win back all that's lost as you loose more and more. It ends though, you don't see the rest of the group you entered with anymore but you're still standing. That shell of a host will applaud you and start to lead you to the exit. They'll extend you a hand. You'll give it a firm shake. And the shard of that porcelain shell embed into your palm as those eyes spin such pretty colors. Find yourself in front of spinning slots and no exit, No one else seems able to see that blood. That doesn't matter though, not anymore. You've got a jackpot to win. Don't you? Whatever your name was?

what was ur MA thesis on (i think u guys call it a dissertation across the pond over yonder)
thank u for asking me this for i love to yap about it ok so i forgot the official title but it was on the presentation of elizabeth lavenza (my beloved) in the two major editions of frankenstein and then in adaptation and how she is a really good case study for the overall changes made and like the cultural reasons behind them (for example in the first edition she and victor are biological cousins that are raised together but then in the third edition [which is essentially the second edition] she becomes an unrelated orphan that they adopt because cultural attitudes towards incest were shifting and people found adoptive stuff marginally less icky than biological. and then in the first play adaptation they're siblings but NOT romantically involved and then the early films they're romantically involved but not related) also in the novels elizabeth acts as a bit of a stand in for mary shelley herself through her outspokenness and her voice and a few films have paid homage to that by having the actresses also play mary shelley (hbc in the 1994 film) and technically not elizabeth but the bride in bride of frankenstein but the bride in those films is essentially book elizabeth split into two characters) and i am waffling but yeah so elizabeth has a really small role and it's usually made even smaller in films (i had to add into the dissertation that i didn't include anything from this century because the focus has shifted to victor and henry's relationship and queer studies of the novel which is very good in terms of exploring the queer themes but it means that elizabeth gets fuck all screen time and she's not really important any more which is SAD to me because she is so reflective of the attitudes in place whenever an adaptation is made (because ALSO ok this is my last bit of waffling but in the first edition of the novel she gets this big impassioned speech about the justice system and how patriarchal it is and then in the third edition its basically all edited out [for multiple reasons] and it makes me so sad because that was such a Moment for her and we don't really ever get to see that interpretation of her after that
