The Essence of Bhakti (Devotion)
Sant Eknath’s doha, “संत जनी की हरि भक्ति, जानहि हरि रूप। भक्ति बिना सुसज्जन, ईश्वर का है मूप।” touches on a profound spiritual truth—the inseparable relationship between devotion and the recognition of the Divine. He suggests that even the wisest among us, without devotion, remain incomplete in their spiritual journey. To truly comprehend the essence of God, we must embrace heartfelt devotion, as it is through this love and surrender that the divine form of Hari (God) reveals itself to us.
Bhakti, or devotion, is not merely about rituals or mechanical worship. It is a deep, personal connection with the Divine that transcends intellect and knowledge. While knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of scriptures are essential, Sant Eknath highlights that these elements alone cannot lead to the complete realization of God. Without bhakti, knowledge is like a vessel without water—it may have structure, but it lacks the essential substance that fulfils its purpose.
True devotion transforms the heart. It moves beyond the confines of the mind and touches the soul. In the company of saints, those who are steeped in devotion, we can see the reflection of the divine. Their actions, thoughts, and words resonate with the energy of the Divine, for their devotion has aligned them with the true form of God. Sant Eknath believes that it is through this alignment that the full experience of God is achieved, which even the wise cannot attain through intellect alone.
Incomplete Without Devotion
Sant Eknath’s message speaks directly to those who believe that wisdom alone can lead to spiritual enlightenment. While wisdom and intellect are crucial, they are incomplete without the emotional and spiritual dimension that devotion brings. Devotion softens the ego, breaks down the barriers of pride, and brings one into a state of humility—a key element in experiencing God. In this state, we no longer see God as an abstract concept but as an intimate, personal reality that touches every aspect of our lives.
Sant Eknath compares the wise without devotion to an empty shell. Wisdom without the heart’s involvement becomes dry, rigid, and disconnected from the true essence of life. The Divine cannot be fully understood by intellectual pursuit alone—it must be felt, experienced, and embraced with love. Bhakti, therefore, completes this journey by opening the soul to the profound presence of God.
Bhakti as the Path to Enlightenment
Spirituality is not about abandoning intellect but about transcending the ego-driven mind through devotion. Bhakti does not negate wisdom; instead, it completes it. The path of devotion integrates love, surrender, and understanding into a holistic approach to God. As one immerses in devotion, the Divine reveals itself not just as an external deity but as the very essence within. This is what the saints, through their constant remembrance and devotion, understand as the form of Hari.
By learning from these saints, we can realize that the intellectual understanding of God must be supplemented by a heartfelt connection. This is not an abstract process; it is deeply personal and transformative.
A Practical Toolkit for Incorporating Bhakti
To incorporate the teachings of this doha into daily life, one needs a simple yet powerful approach:
Daily Devotion Practice: Set aside time each day for personal devotion. This can be in the form of prayer, meditation, or singing praises to God (bhajans). Let this time be a moment of sincere connection with the Divine, free from distractions.
Practice Humility: Ego often blocks the path of spiritual progress. Cultivate humility by serving others selflessly. Recognize the divine presence in everyone and everything around you.
Be in the Company of the Devout: Surround yourself with those who inspire you spiritually. Attend satsangs (spiritual gatherings) where the focus is on devotion and love for the Divine. The energy of a group can elevate your own practice.
Live with Awareness: Bhakti is not limited to set moments of worship; it is a way of living. Carry the awareness of God throughout your daily activities. With each task, remember the Divine and perform your actions as a form of devotion.
Gratitude Journal: At the end of each day, write down moments when you felt connected to the Divine. Reflect on how these moments made you feel and express gratitude for the presence of God in your life.
Chanting and Repetition of the Holy Name: Choose a mantra or name of God that resonates with you and repeat it throughout the day. This keeps your mind connected to the Divine, even during mundane activities.
Study the Lives of Saints: Reading about the lives of saints like Sant Eknath can provide profound inspiration. Their stories remind us of the transformative power of devotion and how it leads to the ultimate realization of God.
Looking Ahead
Sant Eknath’s doha serves as a reminder that without devotion, even the wisest are incomplete in their spiritual understanding. Bhakti, or devotion, is the key that unlocks the heart’s connection to the Divine. Through devotion, we move beyond intellectual understanding and experience God in a deeply personal and transformative way. By incorporating practices like daily devotion, humility, and remembrance of the Divine, we can bring the essence of this teaching into our everyday lives, allowing devotion to illuminate our path to spiritual fulfillment.

Quote
The priests are against, have always been against, real spirituality. This has to be understood. Jesus was crucified by the rabbis—the priests. Buddha was opposed by the brahmins—the priests. Attempts on the life of Mahavira were made by the priests. Strange… it seems whenever they find a man who is genuinely spiritual, they want to kill him. There must be some reason behind it. The reason is that if real spirituality spreads, religion will disappear. Religions are substitute spirituality, saccharin. And if you can get real sugar, who bothers about saccharin? And the latest findings say saccharin creates cancer! The priest is pretending to be your spiritual leader, just pretending. He knows nothing of silence, he knows nothing of reality. He is still talking like primitive people five thousand years ago to a God who does not exist. He is preaching to you from books which are complete rubbish. Just look in the Bible, anywhere—you need not try to find rubbish, it will find you. And it is not only the Bible, the same is true about the Koran, about the Vedas. But priests are imposing the Bible, the Koran, the Vedas, on people. And on every child when he is innocent, when he is a clean slate, parents start writing Catholicism, communism, or anything they want. The priest starts programming the child. By the time he can think on his own, he has lost his thinking intelligence. The program, the conditioning has created a big wall between himself and his being. Now he will remain always outside the home, somewhere on the porch, thinking, ‘This is my palace.’ America is dominated too much by Christian priests, Jewish rabbis. And if a few young people escape from the rabbis and the Christian priests, then they get caught by people like Esalen, EST, Muktananda, Satchidananda. These people—Satchidananda, Muktananda, Hari Bhajan—they are in the same profession as the Christian priest. And in a way they are more dangerous, because they bring you new words, a new language, and you start thinking, perhaps you have found the way. EST and Esalen-type movements exploit the youth.

Walking with Vishnu: The Alvar Path to Bliss

The Alvar Saints and Their Divine Connection
The Alvar saints, the mystical poets of Tamil Nadu, walked a path unlike any other. They did not seek salvation in solitary caves or renounce the world in pursuit of the divine. Instead, they walked with Vishnu—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Their journey was not about escape but about immersing every breath in divine love, turning the mundane into the miraculous.
To the Alvars, Vishnu was not an abstract cosmic force but a living presence, felt in the rustling of temple flags, the scent of rain-soaked earth, and the echo of conch shells at dawn. Their songs—collected as the Divya Prabandham—were not just praises but conversations, outpourings of love, frustration, longing, and ecstasy. This was bhakti in its rawest, most personal form. It was not about rituals; it was about relationship.
Walking with Vishnu: A Journey, Not a Destination
To ‘walk with Vishnu’ is not to chase after Him in temples or scriptures. It is to walk as Him, to align one’s heartbeats with the rhythm of the divine. The Alvars showed that Vishnu is not confined to Vaikuntha; He resides in our joys, our sorrows, and our struggles. Their poetry does not describe a faraway God but a Vishnu who walks beside you, who listens, who speaks through the voice of intuition.
Nammalvar, one of the most revered Alvars, sang of his soul merging into Vishnu like a river dissolving into the sea. He did not worship from a distance; he became the devotion itself. Andal, the only female Alvar, saw Vishnu not as a deity to be worshipped but as her beloved, breaking all barriers of formality to express love in its purest, unshackled state.
This is the Alvar secret: Vishnu is not waiting for you at the end of your journey—He is walking with you right now.
The Alvar Toolkit: Bringing the Path to Daily Life
The beauty of the Alvar path is its accessibility. You do not need to renounce, nor do you need complex rituals. You simply need to walk with Vishnu in your daily life. Here’s how you can make their wisdom a living experience:
Transform Your Words into Prayer – Every word you speak has power. The Alvars infused even their mundane expressions with devotion. Begin and end your day with a whispered name of Vishnu (Narayana, Govinda, Hari), allowing divinity to shape your words.
See Vishnu in People Around You – The Alvars saw Vishnu in every being. Practice seeing the divine in strangers, loved ones, and even those who challenge you. Shift your perception from ‘other’ to ‘one’—a practice that transforms relationships.
Sing, Chant, or Hum – The Alvars did not merely recite—they sang their devotion. Incorporate singing or chanting into your routine, whether it’s a Vishnu mantra, a bhajan, or simply humming with gratitude. Music connects beyond logic—it vibrates with the soul.
Offer Your Actions as an Offering – The Alvars turned every action into devotion. Whether you cook, work, or walk, silently dedicate it to Vishnu. This subtle shift turns ordinary tasks into sacred acts, dissolving the divide between the spiritual and the material.
Walk in Awareness – The simple act of walking can be transformed into an act of devotion. Imagine Vishnu walking beside you, feel His presence in the wind, the trees, the rhythm of your footsteps. Let this awareness dissolve the illusion of separation.
Surrender Through Poetry or Writing – The Alvars poured their emotions into poetry. Try writing a letter, a verse, or even a simple note to Vishnu, expressing your heart freely. Spirituality is not about perfection—it’s about connection.
The Ultimate Realization
The Alvar saints did not see bhakti as a means to an end. It was the end itself. They did not pray to Vishnu—they lived Him. Their path was neither intellectual nor ascetic—it was experiential, drenched in feeling, pulsating with love.
To walk with Vishnu is to erase the illusion of distance. It is to realize that divinity is not a place to reach but a presence to embody. The Alvars sang, danced, and wept their way to bliss, showing that love—unshaken, unfiltered, and unbounded—is the only path we ever needed.
And now, the question is: Are you ready to take the first step?

Translation
One who has forsaken his material occupations to engage in the devotional service of the Lord may sometimes fall down while in an immature stage, yet there is no danger of his being unsuccessful. On the other hand, a nondevotee, though fully engaged in occupational duties, does not gain anything.
