Best thing about quitting smoking and drinking is that I have sm more money for plants. I absolutely love plants. Propagtaing and keeping plants is the msot healing thing I have ever done. Like I have a bad day and instead of buying a bottle of Vodka I just get a spotted begonia. (I actuall do not have a spotted begonia, it is one of my wishlist plants). Plus the greatest thing about plants is that it can be a free hobby. Although propagtaion takes much longer but the sole fact that you have to water and take care of your plants helps you break out of your depressive days. Everytime I was on the verge of giving up, one of my many plants had either bloome dor rooted. I am yet to witness my hoya bloom, because they only do so if they are happy and I want to be a witness for that.

Katharine Hepburn. And my mother gave me her middle name ('her' as in my mother's, not 'her' as in Hepburn's - although, Houghton? What a bitchin' middle name jfc), which has pissed my sister off literally from the day I was born because she got given a(n arguably lovely) random middle name instead. Suck it.

When was the last time you cried?

Today.

Do you have kids?

Yep.

What sports do you play/have you played?

I’m an equestrian (dressage, specifically) although I’ve been out of it for a while because I had to have some surgeries, also because I’m broke, and horseriding is basically like burning money. Also figure skating. Group sports are the devil.

Do you use sarcasm?

I honestly wouldn’t know how to get through life without sarcasm. I’m like, 75% sarcasm (in person, at least - online I tend to be a bit more sincere because I generally obsessively re-read anything I post or comment before letting it loose in the world and if it comes off too sarcastic in my own head I’m like dude … stop being a dick).

What is the first thing you notice about people?

I’m hyper-sensitive, and I have acute sensory-sensitivity issues, so generally I pick up on the minutia of how someone presents at any given time (sometimes because it’s all my brain can take in, because wider general observations are too much), like I’ll pick up on shit people aren’t even aware that they’re putting down. Ask me how much fun I am at parties.

What’s your eye colour?

Brown. Very much towards the uniform brown/black end of the spectrum though, not hazel.

Scary movies or happy endings?

Neither.

Any talents?

I’m weirdly excellent at claw machines? Someone pointed out to me the other day that I’ll need to budget half a suitcase and a not-insignificant amount of my travel budget to The Claw Machines because Japan is full of them, and it honestly hadn’t even occurred to me. And by ‘weirdly excellent’ I mean weirdly excellent - like I can’t remember ever having started on one and not ended with a sizeable audience. I recently had a worker at one stop me mid-game to open the box and reshuffle the toys and then watch over my shoulder because he thought I was cheating. I’m also really good at mimicking people’s handwriting. I don’t have a gag reflex. I have full-body hyperextension, so I can do weird/terrifying joint-related things. Are we supposed to be picking weird stuff? I do have normal talents but they’re boring.

What are your hobbies?

Sculpture, photography, crochet, knitting. I like small-scale art - miniatures, origami. Music (I play the piano, cello, guitar, and sing). I like plants (hoyas, particularly). Is travelling a hobby (my brain would like me to accept that no, it’s a coping mechanism for escaping the nihilistic futility of existence :)? I’m doing two university degrees right now, so I find that my hobbies don’t get much bandwidth and when I’m not reading about neuroscience or philosophy I’m usually just staring into the middle distance letting my brain power down for 5 minutes. Is that a hobby?

Do you have any pets?

I have a cat. And some tropical fish. And a semi-domesticated water dragon named Richard.

5’2”. Or, as people often enjoy pointing out: pocket-sized.

Favourite subject in school?

I hated my school, and therefore generally hated all subjects by extension. I loved anything creative: art, music, drama, creative writing, but I was too much of a social weirdo to not get bullied about it all, so I stopped bothering because I wasn’t willing to make/do what I really wanted to because I was too terrified of getting shat on about it, and there didn’t seem much point in doing any of it halfway. Plus it was an academically selective smartypants-assface school, so they didn’t put much stock in anything creative, unless you could top the state in it, and I didn’t really want that sort of pressure, thanks.

Dream job?

Some sort of very well paid, very infrequently required consultant.

Let's talk plants, buddy. Cacti are fantastic, I have a little collection of them myself, but are there any other plants you like to grow or plan on growing? I've gotten into carnivorous plants lately and I'm finding myself getting pretty attached to them. Hoyas, too, they're such rewarding plants to raise! They're nice and hardy and grow suuuuper long and make lovely smelling little flowers.

Oh you have no idea how happy I am to receive this message.

If you like plants then you’d love the greenhouses in Suna. Over the last few years we’ve cultivated hundreds of different plants from all over the five great nations, it’s quite the sight to behold.

We have a few carnivorous ones as well, some pitcher plants and dionaea muscipula. Those are Temari’s favorite to take care of. We also care for hoya’s (I’m partial to the carnosa’s myself) but if the serpens or the kerrii’s are more your taste we’ve got those too.

I’ve got a few new species I’ve recently started growing that I’m quite excited about; pink astilbe’s, alstroemeria’s, chrysanthemums, bleeding hearts, amaryllis’s. I wish I could show you all just how incredible the greenhouses look these days.

Oh…I’m rambling. I apologize.

Last weekend I went to the Nordic garden fair (Nordiska trädgårdar). It has become somewhat of a tradition of mine to go at least one day every year. This is mostly because I am always looking forward to seeing two special exhibitors: The Swedish Hoya Society (Svenska Hoyasällskapet) and The Swedish Bonsai Association (Svenska bonsaisällskap). Their booths are always a lot of fun. The bonsai booth is especially pretty, it is so marvelous what people can create. There are quite a lot of other things to see at the fair. Unfortunately, I don't have a garden to care for so there isn't much for me to get from any of the other vendors.

This year I bought a lot of hoya cuttings from the Swedish Hoya Society. I was planning on purchasing a carnivorous plant, but I almost felt possessed once I arrived at the hoya booth. I couldn't stop myself. I am quite fond of particularly hoyas and orchids. If I could spend my money frivolously, I would choose to have a jungle in my home. For now, I will settle on my kitchen window frame being overgrown. Seeing it makes me so happy, even though I no longer have any drinking glasses to drink from (they have all been taken for my new lovely cuttings).

I have a son. Now, being a mother is not always rainbows and sunshine. Most days, it’s quite the opposite. Yet, it’s so fascinating to watch my own goblin grow into a little person. He has the sweetest laugh, and that sound is the light of my days.

When I’m writing, I forget everything else. Even on my toughest days, when I have a lot on my plate and feel overwhelmed, I find it worthwhile to set everything aside and savor such a moment of peace. Every day is made better by writing, even if it’s just a few words.

I also love to share what I write. Written role play has been a huge part of my life for many years, and I’ve made so many incredible friends with that media. Now, sharing fanfiction is a new hobby, and the dopamine rush I get every time I receive kudos and comments is quite addicting.

My plant collection, which includes -but is not limited to- eleven different Hoya cultivars. Two of them are blooming right now, and each flower just makes me so, so happy. If you haven't seen a Hoya flower before, I highly recommend googling it—it's quite impressive!

I love pretty dresses. In my book, there's no such thing as overdressing. I take great care of my appearance, and my aesthetic brings me immense joy.

My introspective- week 2/3 of @2024-grimoire-challenge

Finally got some time to write up my review! Joining two weeks together:)

Second week of the challenge, the prompts have been much more personal opinion/belief focused. I don't mind them, but it was a lot more work- especially since I've been super busy lately (exam season is starting+two concerts this week>_<). Thing is, since I'm on my own path and don't really follow one way of thinking/believing, my answer to a lot of the questions was "I don't know". For example, "where does magic come from"? I don't know that. Honestly, I don't even know what magic really is, and I use it all the time! My notes ended up being mostly about my experiences and thoughts instead of belief. I actually like that; I'm hoping that those will change somewhat during this year and I'll be able to do the topic "Magic 2" and reflect on all the new viewpoints I'll acquire.

Saturday, 13.1. The week's almost over, but I'm just about halfway done with the prompts- I did monday (magic), tuesday (witch) and wednesday (personal practice) journal prompts and started on my plant research (chamomille). I knew I'd fall behind for exams, but I didn't know it would be this soon >_<

Wednesday, 17.1. I've skimmed trough the prompts for week 3 and they seem like they'd take me a long time, so off I go to study genetics instead xD

Wednesday, 24.1. Finally getting some time! I'm taking today off before I go back to studying. Week 3 is all about energy (something I sorely lack right now lol). In my own practice, I most connect to nature/it's energy. Not only for energy in my spells, but also for my own. I garden and take care of a small orchard; my room has plants wherever there's enough sunlight, and my furniture is a bunch of mismatched wood types. It's a small room, but I've still found some space for my 200 and 45 l aquariums (~53 and 12 gallons) that are also full of plants. Honestly, they really help me with burnout, anxiety and managing my energy levels- I can relax and watch the fishies, get happy whenever I see a new leaf on my hoyas and after a hard day of work in the garden I usually have more spoons than I've started with:)

I adore the Sun for its light and warmth, but don't care as much for the other celestial bodies. I admire water, air and fire but mostly in the context of nurturing, feeding and renewing the life around them. I have a special reverence for earth, which, given my line of studies and interests, is pretty self explanatory. Gods and spirits are, in my opinion, personifications/avatars/etc. of nature and human traits. As such, when working with deities, I prefer to go straight to the source- their domains. I have a spot in the forest where I give Veles my offerings; I bring leafed branches and flowers to my altar for Jarilo and I prune grapevines while asking Dionysus for his blessings.

With it being winter right now, I don't go outside as much as I should. For some reason, I get more anxious in cold weather and taking a walk alone becomes quite a challenge and thus leads to me not having enough energy/brain power to get my work done.

With that in mind, I think taking a long walk should count for my energy work this week!

A Bit of Silver and Splash

H. carnosa 'Nova Ghost' (a.k.a. reverted 'Argentea Princess') and H. parviflora (splash)

H. biakensis 'ASL1' was a surprise in how much silver it has, and how happy a grower it is.

Two similar ones H. verticillata (heart leaf splash) (formerly parasitica) and H. latifolia 'Snow Queen'. I don't know which I'd pick of I could only keep one. Verticillata has that gorgeous splash that turns pink in high light, but 'Snow Queen' has nice splash too, and it's always been one of my easiest and fastest growing hoyas. So, good thing I don't have to pick, huh.

Random plant updates, part whatever

Everything is popping out so much new growth and I am incredibly excited about it. It's New Leaf Day 2-5x a week right now! Endless celebrations.

My plant overperformers for the month are my Strawberry begonia (Saxifraga stolonifera) and my NOID Haworthia both of which may need to be repotted again by the end of the summer if they keep growing at the rate they've been growing at. There were both given to me in tiny pots, I upsized them by 2", and they have both already taken up that whole space. I'm incredibly impressed.

The other big growth winner for the month is the old man (nongendered, its just got old man vibes) Hoya pubicalyx that I rescued from my Mother-in-Law's former place of employment. This thing is reputed to be close to 20 years old (it's got vines like tiny tree branches, its thicc) so I'm not surprised that I grew 7 leaves this month but also, it grew seven leaves this month!

I have potted up the cuttings that I took of my Grandfather's ancestral Holiday Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) and I can't wait for it to start growing. Also, its counterpart, my African Violet who's named for my Grandmother, is about to start flowering again. Someday I hope to keep them together on my ancestral altar.

I finally have all of my propagations into pots, so of course I need to start some more ASAP. I'm not ready for my Monstera adensonaii to outgrow its support, so I'll probably do a good chop to create a fuller plant. Also my NOID Peperomia "scandens" could use a chop to make it look more even (and eventually fill it out more).

My two "birthday plants" should arrive tomorrow. I ordered a Begonia maculata "Flamingo Queen" because I was looking for a summer bloomer and a Scindapsus pictus Exotica that I'm hoping will live happily in the free window that I still have in my living room. I have a name picked out for the Begonia (my partner wants to name them after a famous Flamingo Queen) but have absolutely no idea what I am going to name the Scindanpsus.

There are outdoor plants, too. Far too many to talk about. My rose bush is in full bloom, as is the first of my Meadow Sages. My Ruta plants have buds, too! (that will be a first, we planted it late in the summer last year) I think that my Calendula and Zinnia starts that I grew from seed will be hardened off enough to plant by this weekend.

I don't know where I'm going with this. It's mostly a record for me. Of this ephemeral moment. Of this ephemeral happiness.

O beloved ones, repeat the Simran of Naam,

Otherwise your life will be spoiled.

Kaama kalpanaa chora jaga se, hoya raho tuma nyaari

Cast out fantasies of desire from your heart;

Remain detached from this outer world.

Dhyaana guru kaa dhaara tu, jaise chandra chakoraa

Nirakhata raho nisadina, aatha hi praharaa

Hoi hai dyaala to kari hai nihaala

Pala me deya ubaari (1)

Contemplate on the Guru as the moonbird gazes at the moon;

Maintain your watch all the hours of the day and night.

When He becomes gracious, He showers His blessing on you,

And in an instant you attain salvation.

Dhru, Pralhaada, Vibhishana, aur Bhilani Shivari

Ganika Ajaamila jaise paapi naama anekana taari

Patita paavana naama nirmala

Tuma kyon chale bisaari (2)

Dhru, Prahlad, Vibhishana, 30 and Bhilni Shivari were saved.

His Naam liberated countless sinners like Ganika, the prostitute, and Ajamila, the sinner. 31 

The Immaculate Naam is the purifier of the fallen ones.

Why do you persist in your forgetfulness?

Nita nema kara prema se, svaasa svaasa ura dhaari

Chita dvai nainana madhye, sthira kara samhaari

Dhuna dhadhakaara hotaa jahaa

Ghantaa naada jhanakaari (3)

Constantly meditate with true love; with each and every breath, cherish the Naam in your heart.

Fix your attention between the two eyes; become firm and concentrate within.

Where the Dhun is resounding,

You will hear the peeling of Celestial Bells.

Dala sahasra kanvala ke paarachala, kaala kalaa saba haari

Sthula sukshama kaarana shariraa, mana na maayaa thahari

Sthaan trikuti brahma langa ke,

Manasarovara naahari (4)

When you travel to the regions beyond the Thousand-Petaled Lotus, the tricks of Kal are all conquered.

Rising above the physical, astral, and causal bodies, neither mind nor Maya remain.

Crossing over Trikuti, the region of Brahma, bathe in the waters of Mansarovar.

Hansa hoya sataloka sidhaare, satta purusha hi nihaare

Nita hota bina dhuna jahaa, satta hi satta pukaare

Bhaja Somanaatha naama niraamaya

Guru prataapa te huye nyaare (5)

The swan-bird of the soul departs for Sat Lok, where it beholds Sat Purush, the True Lord.

The music of the veena reverberates perpetually on the air.

In that Realm, the Truth of Truth calls forth.

Somanath says: “Repeat the Immaculate Naam.

Mystic Verses of Sant Namdev from Three Sources

Namdev advises to accept divine instruction so that humanity may be contented and happy:

When I sing of God, then I behold Him;

Then I, His servant, obtain contentment.

Accept divine instruction, 0 man;

the true guru shall cause thee

to meet God.

Where the heavenly Light shineth,

There playeth spontaneous Music.

'God's Light is all-pervading'--

By the guru's favour I know that.

In the chamber of the heart are jewels

Which glitter there like lightning.

God is near, not distant,

And His Spirit completely filleth mine.

Where the inextinguishable sun of God's Word shineth,

There earthly lamps grow pale:

Through the guru's favour I have know this.

God's slave Nama hath been easily absorbed in Him.

I Shall Never Forget the Lord Now

I shall never forget the Lord now,

I shall keep him clasped to my heart.

Were I to forget him, I should indeed lose all I have.

Every moment I offer my body and mind to the Lord,

Never for a moment do I let him go from my mind.

With every breath I drink the nectar of his remembrance --

This beggar thrives on the nectar of the Lord's Name.

Engrossed in his love, I keep repeating his sweet Name.

Were I to forget him, I would certainly come to grief.

Says Namdev, I shall never fix my hope on any but him.

I shall lay down my life to attain the wealth of his Name.

Beloved Radhasoami (Lord of All Souls) is Your Protector

Guru is my Father and Mother. Who can describe His glory and eminence?

0 Jiva [soul]! Why do you worry? Beloved Radhasoami is your protector. When you were born, He arranged milk for your feed and had your mother bring you up. He took care of you in every way and attracted you to His Holy Feet.

He provided you with all the pleasures of the senses and showed you the transitory nature of the world. He then drew you to Satsang and gave out to you the secrets and mysteries of the Nij Ghar (True Home). By His grace and mercy, go up and open the Tenth Door.

He improves your understanding by His discourses. He lets you examine the true nature of the mind, enabling you to give up your entanglements, delusions and adherences to past beliefs. He applies your Surat [Soul's Attention] to Shabd [inner Current of Sound and Light]. Ascend to higher regions and see beautiful scenes.

He makes the bell and the conch audible to you in Sahas-dal-kanwal [Thousand Petaled Lotus]. He shows you the splendor of Guru in Trikuti [Causal Plane, second inner Region]. See moonlight in the expanse of Sunn, and, reaching the perfect region beyond Bhanwargupha, perform Arti of Sat Guru.

Taking a telescope from Sat Purush, proceed to Alakh and Agam. Beyond lies the infinite Radhasoami Dham. Behold it and be enriched place your head at His Holy Feet. (Prem Bani Radhasoami, Huzur Maharaj)

Have patience. Do not be dejected. Fix your Attention on, and absorb yourself in the Holy Form of Guru. Always sing His praises. Make no excuses. This should be your aim, just as the Papiha (the sparrow hawk) patiently waits in expectation of the Swanti rain with a fixed aim.

Direct your Attention inward, do not allow it to flow out anywhere else. Put up with every thing inwardly. Accept nothing but internal joy. Have patience. Do not divulge acts of grace of Sat Guru to others. Live with Radhasoami like a fish in water. (Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry, Soami Ji Maharaj)
