Nixe’s Top 10 Films Of 2024!
in chronological viewing order, including both new and new-to-me films from this year.
03. Monkey Man
Only God can forgive you now.
It would have been enough for me if Dev Patel had made a super-polished, super-tight action movie that looks great and has some awesome fight scenes, with characters fleshed out far and away beyond what’s typical of the genre these days (a courtesy extended even to the protagonist’s mother, beyond mere tragic backstory). And he did that! Which is doubly impressive, considering what an ordeal it was to get this movie made and put out into the world. But what elevates Monkey Man and made it stick with me all year long were the themes of how religion is used by both the oppressors and the oppressed, and the alarm it raises loud and clear against the rise of religious fascism.
You see scars. I see the courage of a child fighting to save his mother. These are the hands of a warrior, who is destined to challenge the gods.
On the one hand, throughout the story, religion is a balm to the excluded and the suffering. As a child, Kid delighted in his mother’s stories of Hanuman, a Hindu monkey deity, who is known among other things as “remover of obstacles” and “healer of sorrows.” After his village is destroyed - an eviction, because it was largely populated by a religious minority, that became a massacre - and his mother murdered, Kid takes his image from Hanuman for his day (night?) job as a fighter in a grimy underground ring. And, after all has seemed to go wrong in Kid’s quest for revenge (a quest never equivocated on, or portrayed as wrong-headed), it’s through Hanuman again that he finds the strength to fight on.
Kid gets that second wind while sheltering with hijra at a remote temple in the forest. (Alpha, the temple keeper, assures him that the police won’t come looking for him there because they find the hijra “too unsettling.”) Although driven into this exile from society, in their own community, in their own temple and in their devotion to Ardhanarishvara, called “the Lord who is half woman”, the hijra are free, happy, and safe. Alpha is also the one who pulls Kid through his dark night of the soul and reminds him that he must keep on fighting, for his own sake and for the sake of all the marginalized people who have been hurt, too. (But don’t think the hijra are politely excused from the revenge narrative: they get to join Kid for the climactic fight, as well.)
(Anger will not quiet your soul, my son.) Don’t call me son.
So we come to the other hand: the religion of the oppressors. One of the major antagonists, Baba Shakti, is a Hindu nationalist who targets the hijra and their temple and was also responsible for the eviction/massacre in Kid’s village. He speaks, by turns, in condescending platitudes and hyperconservative fury, dodging interviewers’ questions about his shady business practices and whipping up us-against-them hatred at political rallies. The corrupt cop who follows Baba Shakti’s command is the more personal enemy for Kid - and the dynamic is a great illustration of what happens when the state becomes a tool of religion, and vice versa - but make no mistake, the guru is the face of oppression through and through.
Monkey Man’s refusal to pull its punches on this front got a disappointing but not surprising response: to date, the film hasn’t been released in India, due to what Siddhant Adlakha called “the specter of Hindutva blowback.” With different flavors of religious fascism on the rise around the world, I worry that movies like Monkey Man will become rarer and rarer, if not due to active government-authorized censorship, then because studios will simply prove unwilling to take the financial gamble on anything remotely “controversial,” anything that might comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. As Monkey Man proves, though, the afflicted will not be swept off this planet easily, no matter how uncomfortable it’s made for them.

Went to the Dallas Art Museum this weekend with my partner Kyle and there's a Hindu exhibit there! I honestly can't explain how happy I was to see carvings/statues of Lord Shiva, Durga, Ganesha, Pavarti, & others I didn't know! I felt such a warmth & welcome from them, especially Shiva and Ganesha.
Over the past few months, I have felt a pull to Goddess Khali again like I did in 2020. Ganesha has also appeared in my meditations as he did long ago. But Lord Shiva is new!🤭 I've been getting a lot of art of him on Pinterest lately, and he appeared in a meditation I did for the past full moon along with Khali and Ganesha.💜
I have not felt such a loving tug from a deity in the long time, and Shiva did that at the museum.💜
When I saw the Shiva statue of him dancing from across the hall, I don't know exactly how to describe it but I "felt" rather than heard a whisper of "Come see me, Hannah!"
I even remember seeing the statue & thinking "Shiva?" Second guessing myself, and feeling a playful response of "Hannah?" 🤭
This was art museum but I still felt like the urge to leave offerings of thanks to the statues and burn incense for them.💜 It was amazing and I feel so happy and a warmth of love from Shiva and Ganesha I haven't felt since first finding Thor or Loki all of those years ago. 💜🕉
I wish Tumblr let me share more than 10 images per post lol
The first photo is of the statue of Shiva I saw from across the room. Next is Goddess Durga, then Durga again, Nandi the Bull the mount of Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha!🕉🕉🕉

Two posts by user ArrMarriageAvoidance from a thread titled TIFU (Today I Fucked Up).
First post reads:
"TIFU by telling my parents I was gay to avoid their arranged marriage proposals
So I'm pretty straight, maybe slightly bi if we count femboys. Let's get that out of the way first. I'm also an Indian American male around 26 years of age.
I'd also like to clear up some misconceptions around arranged marriage. A lot of non Indians seem to think it's literally your parents choose who you marry and that's that, but that's not really the case. Instead it's more like your parents tap their network to find potential partners for you, if you like each other's pics then you guys meet in person and then you decide whether or not you want to get married. So basically your parents are Tinder and you get a meeting or two to decide whether or not you want to get married. It's not quite as bad as many of you think it is, but the whole process feels super rushed and I'd rather date someone before I figure out if we're compatible or not
Anyways, my parents have recently been getting on my case about getting married. Apparently I'm getting older, need to settle down and give them grandchildren or something like that. Basically every time I see them (which is fairly often since they live close by) they have a new potential match for me, a picture of some new girl and ask me if I'd be willing to meet her.
It's honestly super annoying, but I'm too non-confrontational to really put my foot down and say "I dont' want an arranged marriage", after all if I do there'd be an argument or at minimum some interrogation about why I don't want one.
Anyways, I was thinking of ways I could get them to stop harassing me about getting married and the idea in the title popped up in my head. I decided it'd be a lot easier to just come out as gay than to explain why I didn't want an arranged marriage. My parents were fairly conservative but weren't the types to disown their kids, and if I just said I was gay I'd have a solid reason to not get an arranged marriage--I didn't like girls
Soooooooooo that's what I ended up doing last time I was visiting. They were showing me pictures of some girl and I just looked them in the eyes and said "Mom, dad, I'm gay". They got really quiet and awkward and asked me if I was sure and I said yes. My mom told me they'd love me no matter what and to do what makes me happy. My dad was a lot more awkward and quiet by later gave me a similar talk about how he was a bit uncomfortable with the idea, but recognizes that times are changing and I should do what makes me happy. Overall I did feel kinda bad because of how genuinely my parents seemed to respond to me, but was happy with the result, they stopped giving me arranged marriage proposals and stopping showing me pictures of girls
That is until last weekend. I visited them as usual and was greeted by my mom who was more excited than usual. She sat me down and pulled out a binder with a bunch of pictures of guys. Apparently my parents had spent the last month or so looking for any and all gay Hindu Indian men who I could potentially marry. So now I guess I'm dealing with the exact same shit but instead of being greeted with pictures of cute Indian girls I get to see pictures of gay Indian dudes instead. Fuck my life lol
At this point the plan is to either find a girlfriend and tell my parents she totallllllllly turned me straight or maybe marry a twink or smthn idk
TL;DR: Told my parents I was gay so they would stop pestering me with arranged marriage matches, start potential gay suitors instead"
Second post reads:
"TIFU by telling my parents I was gay to avoid their arranged marriage proposals [UPDATE]
Hey everyone! I don't know if you remember me but I'm the dude who came out as gay to avoid an arranged marriage
Anyways, I have an update for you guys!
I read all the comments on the original post, from people telling me to just tell my parents, questioning whether or not I was really straight, laughing at the admittedly fairly funny situation I'd gotten myself into and a couple of people who were straight up mean
At the end of the day though posting here probably gave me the final push to do something. The weekend after I'd made the post, I visited my parents as always and resolved myself to tell them the truth. However when I got there my mom as always pushed the binder in my hands and I kinda lost my resolve to tell her. I decided to just play along
It was then that I remembered the people on this thread who made fun of me for liking femboys and questioned whether or not I was really straight. I kinda took that to heart and decided to look at the binder of dudes in earnest to see if I liked any of them. Tbh I'm really glad I did. Most of the dudes were unattractive as expected, but I found a dude on their who I legitimately think is cuter and more feminine than the vaaaaast majority of girls I've seen. I told my mom I like him and she kinda joked around asking me what the point of being gay is when I wanted a dude who looked like a girl anyways (Easter Island head emoji)
She talked to his parents, we had a meeting set up over Zoom and overall it went really well! Me and him have a bunch of common interests (we're both massive weebs and history nerds) and he also disclosed that he apparently crossdressed in private which only made me like him more
In the end though we both decided we didn't want to rush into marriage and wanted to do a dating trial run of sorts. I told my parents and…. THEY WERE FINE WITH IT. My dad literally just told me that as long as we have marriage as an eventual goal and don't have sex before marriage they didn't mind if we date… Y'all literally this whole shitshow could've been avoided lmfao (though I'm kinda glad it wasn't)
Luckily he lived in the same state as me, but he was still a 3-4 hour drive away, so mostly we've just had discord calls and spent time together gaming for the past few weeks. This Saturday though we finally managed to meet up in person and have a date and honestlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy I think I'm kinda in love. Dude's cuter than any girl I've ever met but unlike most girls he's actually into the same things I am.
Anyways we ended up having a great day out on Saterday and I ended up staying at his play over the weekend (though surprisingly I kept my promise to my dad and somehow avoided having sex lol) Anyways yeah I'm now back home and extremely happy with my decision to lie to my parents (then again is it really lying if it turned out to be true?).
I really really do like him and will prolly ask him to marry me a couple months from now if nothing goes wrong.
TL;DR - guess I really was gay all along"

Diwali 2024 : An Astrological Perspective
Diwali Puja Timing
Date - 1 November 2024
Time - 5:36pm - 6:16 pm
Some elements make Diwali stand apart in its history and story worldwide. This has its place in a person's culture while holding some religious values. Diwali is also known as the festival of lights, which the people of Hinduism celebrate, and of course, there is a set reason as to why it's called so. Every religious auspicious event, as does the festival of lights, has its own significance. In these lines below, you will learn about the history and reasons that will help you understand Diwali better.
To start with, Diwali can be described as an auspicious occasion that symbolises the triumph of light over dark, which is the general representation of good winning over evil. Diwali is known for the lights and celebrating the goddess Lakshmi, who is widely known as the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Now, putting together a topic so vast that it has relevance to religious aspects can be tricky and overwhelming for a person. But do not fear; astrology is here to help us understand the day further.
Let's talk about the astrology of this long-awaited event. As we all know, astrologers read natal charts that help a person prepare for future events. According to them, in 2024, the world will witness specific movements of various planets. Something very similar can be observed in the sign of Taurus. Jupiter will be prominent during the Diwali puja. The above is also valid concerning the creation of art and a materialistic approach.
All in all, Diwali is a popular festival celebrated by a vast number of people every single year. The festival has come a long way, and it has remained loved and cherished amongst all of its followers.
Lunar Phase:
Diwali has a new moon, which signifies the start of new things. A new moon is considered a strong time for intentions and, therefore, brings plenty of abundance.
Lakshmi Puja Timings
As per Hindu Panchang, Diwali is on November 01, 2024, and the suitable time would be between 5:36 PM and 6:16 PM. This time is also special as it lies in the Pradosh Kaal, which is a very good time to pray for the goddess Lakshmi.
Extended Pooja Timings:
However, if you so wish, you can also carry out the puja until 7:30 PM. This time allows for proper puja and lighting of the diyas, which signify that darkness is being removed and the energy from God is being brought to the home.
Lakshmi Puja Vidhi
Clean your Surroundings: First of all, make sure that your house is in decent condition, as you will be hosting the Goddess Lakshmi in the form of prayers.
Make a Shiring Room: A small altar with images or idols of Lakshmi and offerings of flowers, sweets, and coins can now be placed.
Lighting Diyas: Diyas (lamps) should be lit during pujas when needs arise. These lamps are also linked with security since they are assumed to bring good energy and light to every corner of the illumination.
Recite Mantras: Chanting the Lakshmi Ashtakshara Mantra several times during the puja helps multiply the energies of your resolutions.
Distribute Sweets: After puja, distributing sweets among family and friends is a gesture that promotes sociality and cheerfulness, which are associated with the occasion of Diwali.
According to the indications of the planets, this Diwali year is expected to be more fruitful and have growth potential. The phase of these two planets can further improve your financial standing and bring joy to relationships. It is the best time to begin a business, make investments, or show gratitude.
Conclusion
Diwali will be celebrated on November 01, 2024. Practicing the puja at the right date and time, as prescribed above, and following the principles of astrology can enhance the energy of the occasion. Let the auspicious occasion of Diwali bring happiness, wealth, and, above all, new beginnings into your life!

Evil Eye |
[source]
Origin in hinduism [hoodoo] OR the belief that it dates back almost 3,000 years to ancient Greece and Rome. It is one of the strongest symbolic images in the world.
Wearing an evil eye as an amulet is believed to provide protection against evil forces. The evil eye has symbolism in almost every country/religion. Such as Judaism, islam, hindu, Buddhism and christianity.
The evil eye is thought of as a look given to inflict harm, suffering, or some form of bad luck on those that it is cast upon. It was a look that stated bad intentions and to intend bad things to happen to the person who was the target of such jealousy or pure malice.
Its superstition of the evil eye holds that the malicious look is powerful enough to bring about actual disaster for the unfortunate person.
The earliest known evidence was back in Greece and Rome. Believed that the evil eye was the largest threat to anyone who had been praised too much, or received admiration beyond what they truly deserve.
A person so swollen with pride that they would bring about their own downfall.
It was thought that the gods and goddesses were punishing those who had become too proud of their achievements, and destroyed them with the power of the evil eye to restore them to the level of mere mortals.
In different languages it is known as;
Hebrew Evil Eye- Ayin Ha’ra. Turkish: Nazar Boncugu. Italian: Mal Occhio. Farsi: Bla Band.
Arabic: Ayin Harsha. Scotland: Droch Shuil. Spanish: Mal Ojo or El Oja. France: Mauvais Oeil.
Germany: Boser Blick. Romans: Oculus Malus.
Protection against the evil eye.
The greeks would carry incense or the cross as protection against the evil eye. New mothers would keep objects under their pillow including red, black or white strings, a nail, gunpowder, bread, salt, garlic, a ring, indigo blue, or a pair of silver buckles.
Gunpowder symbolised fighting against the evil eye. The nail was strength, indigo held its power in its blue colouring and salt a symbol of preservation and strength.
[Hoodoo Dellish] Silver naturally protects from all negative energies including the evil eye. Traditionally a silver dime bound on a red cotton thread is used to prevent spiritual attack.
Coal your eyes: Black eyeliner around the eyes to protect the soul. This protects mainly women from jealousy, gossip, and evil eyes.
Wear a charm: The Nazar is a traditional anti-envy charm in islamic culture. Every tradition has its own protective charms. Christians; cross. Hamsa [Judaism] Mercury dimes [Hoodoo] Wear the one you are drawn to block ill will and evil intent.
“The eyes are considered to have mystical powers and serve as the doorway to the soul. The evil eye receiver will then be cursed, harmed, or receive bad luck. However, if you’re wearing the evil eye amulet, this negative energy will be repelled from you and sent back to the giver.”
___________________________________________________________
Evil eye colours
Different evil eye colours have different meanings. THe blue eye is general protection, the red eye is for love protection, the green for healing and fertility, the yellow for happiness and success and black to absorb harmful energy.
Additional colours; Pink; Protect your friendships. Calming feeling, content and relaxation.
Light green- Success with your dreams, enjoyment and contentment, good health.
Grey- Protect against sorrow, openness to new situations, reduce intensity of another colour.
Yellow- Protect your health, strength and power, sharper mind and concentration.
Purple- Boost your imagination, re-balance your life, to remove obstacles.
Brown- protection from elements, connection with nature, orderliness and convention.
Red- Brings you courage- more enthusiasm and energy- protection from fears and anxieties.
Dark green-Garners happiness- balance in your life- freedom to pursue new ideas
Light blue- General protection- broadening your perspective - solitude and peace.
Dark blue- Karma and fate protection. Calm and relax. Open flow of communication.
Orange- Happiness and protection. Motivation for commitment. Increase creativity and playfulness.
*Note not to tattoo the evil eye, it is better as a charm. It is used to absorb the evil energy, if that is a tattoo the body would absorb it instead.
Use; Worn or hung in the home, as a talisman to provide protection, and safety. From jealousy, harm and evil, also used to bless and protect those we truly admire, and adore this includes pets, benevolent spirits and humans.
Care: Clean lightly with soft cloth it washing is necessary, do so in tepid water without submersion. Dry with a soft cloth.
Placement on a person. On a pet. In the home.
(Disclaimer: I'm unsure but better safe than sorry- but I think the Evil eye may be part of a closed practice it's just here for educational purposes but I don't think its something I would practice or use as a witch- if other experienced witches want to let me know feel free to message/reblog this post)

Darjeeling's cultural landscape is as rich as its natural one. Many ethnic groups, including Bengalis, Tibetans, Lepchas, and Gorkhas, have contributed to the town's distinctive tapestry of customs, celebrations, and culinary traditions. The local marketplaces, where Tibetan woolens, Nepali handicrafts, and Bengali delicacies are for sale alongside each other, are a fascinating illustration of cultural diversity.
The Gorkha people eagerly celebrate Dashain, a major Hindu festival in Darjeeling. Another notable festival is Losar, the Tibetan New Year, which occurs with lavish feasts and traditional entertainment.
Architectural Charm
Darjeeling's architectural heritage stands as a testament to its colonial past. In the 19th century, the British established Darjeeling as a hill station, and their influence was visible in the town's buildings and infrastructure. An example of Gothic architecture is St. Andrew's Church, erected in 1843. The Darjeeling Planters' Club offers a glimpse into the colonial lifestyle with its wooden interiors and nostalgic charm.

Adventure Awaits
Darjeeling provides numerous opportunities for adventure seekers. Those who enjoy trekking can embark on the Singalila Ridge trek, which provides breathtaking views of the Everest and Kanchenjunga peaks. This trek takes you through Singalila National Park, where you can encounter a diverse range of plant and animal species, such as the elusive red panda.
Another popular sport is river rafting on the Teesta River, which offers an exhilarating adventure through the rapids while taking in the beautiful scenery. Darjeeling draws additional adventurers who want to do rock climbing, mountain biking, and paragliding.
Gujrat Package 4D 3N
Culinary Delights
A vacation to Darjeeling is incomplete unless you try the native cuisine. The diverse ethnic background influences the wonderful flavor combination of local cuisine. Noodle soup (thukpa) and traditional Nepali fried bread (sel roti) are must-try dishes.
Glenary's, a historic bakery and café, makes amazing pastries and bread, while Keventer's, a popular English breakfast spot, brings a taste of colonial life. Intriguing street cuisines include spicy noodle dishes, pakoras, and chaat.
Conclusion
Darjeeling is not just a place to visit; it is a transformative encounter that creates a lasting memory in the hearts of all who venture there. Offering peaceful tea estates, awe-inspiring mountain vistas, a rich cultural tapestry, and thrilling pathways to discover, Darjeeling provides a unique medley of experiences that cater to every traveler's preferences. The mist-covered hills and fragrant tea envelop Darjeeling, and its enchanting allure has the power to captivate anyone who experiences its charm, making it the Queen of the Hills.

Nav Varsh Abhinandan
The beautiful Spring season is here and the Chaitra Navratri shall follow soon. The new leaves, buds and flowers signify new life, new beginnings, prosperity and renewed hope! Our ancients calculated the new year from the auspicious Chaitra month. On 22 March, 1957, the Gregorian calendar was adopted for official purposes. 22 March, 2023 of the Gregorian calendar marks the beginning of the Vikrami Samvat 2080.
(The image above shows 12 Pictures of The Sun, Each Month, Same Place, Same Time. Photo by Ciro Russo)
Lord Brahma started creating the universe on the first day of the Chaitra Navratri. Jau (barley) was the first crop to be cultivated then. We sow Jau and grow Khetri in reverence of this crop and then offer it back to Mother Nature. King Vikramaditya was coronated King on this day. The Vikrami Samvat or the Hindu calendar is named after him.
Navratri literally means nine nights. These nights are symbolic of the darkness of ignorance. The purpose of celebrating Navratri is to enable humans to overcome this darkness. When we worship the Devi or the Mother Goddess, she is the unified form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. These three forms together form Shakti (power). This Shakti is the energy that is emanant in Nature and the Lord himself controls it. The ninth day of the Chaitra Navratri is Ram Navami. This marks the birthday and the coronation of Bhagwan Rama.
The feminine aspect of Divinity is worshipped in Navratri. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that the word Stree is made up of- Sa, Ta and Ra. Sa signifies Sattvic, Ta signifies Tamasic and Ra signifies the Rajasic nature of women. Stree thus represents the combination of the three gunas. You can judge a house by the Greh-Lakhmi (lady of the house), she represents the ‘everything’ of the house. The Vedas declare that where women are honoured, there divinity is present with all its potency. We worship five kinds of mothers. Firstly, we worship the Deha-Mata. She is the one who bore us for nine months and gave us the gift of life. Secondly, we worship the Gau-Mata. The cow is given the exalted position of a mother because she sustains us by converting her blood into milk. Thirdly, we revere the Bhu-Mata or Mother Earth. She is the one, on whom we are dependant for everything like shelter, water, food etc. Fourthly, we revere the Desh-Mata. Our country gives us protection, rights and the support system of society. Indians are perhaps the only people who revere the country as Mother India. Fifthly, we revere the Veda-Mata. We revere the Vedas as our heritage and as spiritual treasures. They tell us the purpose of life and guide us on the path of self-realisation.
For those who are not spiritually inclined, I would say that Navaratri is a time to revere nature and offer thanksgiving for all that nature has bestowed us with. Resources like the Earth, air, water, minerals, oils etc. should not be wasted or misused. It is important to conserve the environment for the generations to come.
Scientifically speaking, the Chaitra Navratri is placed at the intersection of winter and summer. The body needs to detox at this time to adjust itself for the upcoming summer season. And that is exactly why Navratri fasting is recommended. You can have fruits and nuts along with one meal of alternate grains (no cereals like wheat, rice etc.). Navratri foods include Kuttu ka atta, Swaank ke chawal, Singhaare ka aata, etc. And you cook with Rock salt which is an excellent detoxifying agent. But remember that a fast is a fast, as long as you don’t convert it into a feast!
So let’s do Devi Pooja in Navratri and revere the Mother Goddess in her beautiful Nav-Durga form. And while doing Devi-Poojan and Kanya-Poojan, do extend the respect to all the living goddesses around you … your mother, wife, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law and just any girl out there! Happy Navratri!
