Turkle’s interview, Louis C.K.’s video, and my daily social media use log.

I’ll preface this by saying that, as a whole, I despise what is quickly becoming in my opinion a bit of a pandemic.  That is, if it isn’t already the modern Spanish Flu only with batteries.  The same sort of thing both Louis and Turkle touch on.  The death of actual conversation in favor of staring dead eyed at a phone screen.  I hate this current shift toward some sort of Facebook generation.

At its inception, Facebook, and the idea behind it, were remarkable.  It was a place to keep in touch with your one group of peers, college aged students. No parents, no preteens, no grandparents.  There were no games at the start, no “likes” if I remember right.  It was simple and served a legitimate purpose.

How far gone a purpose is perhaps debatable, though I’d argue that for the most part, the site as a whole is essentially an internet vampire sucking the life right out of you.  I can think of a thousand things in a second that I’d rather do than share something on Facebook.  I don’t have the app on my phone, my account/password aren’t saved on it, I check it maybe once a year for all of sixty seconds.

Though as I do this, all around me are the people that get netted in.  Especially the young.  I can’t even have a proper conversation with some of my youngest family members because even the youngest of my cousins has a smartphone at this point.  And they don’t just own one, it may as well be welded onto their hand.  Their eyes are downcast to the LED glow, they bob their head as if listening, but their answers are vague and often not on topic.

I remember my first cell.  I was fourteen working a job at a gun range and wanted one for the sole purpose of being able to call my parents for a ride back home.  Something they could call me on if they were going to be late, that sort of thing.  Web wasn’t really a thing on them back then, and while it did do text messaging, it was 10 cents sending or receiving and something I did not use.  I bought the device and paid for my plan both.  Fast forward a bit over a decade and here we are, where my 8 year old cousins have more modern smartphones than I do.

I absolutely agree with Turkle’s idea of sanctuary zones, where you put the phone away and leave it.  Dinner, especially.  This doesn’t apply just to family, either.  When I’m out for a drink with friends, we often have a rule.  Everybody puts their phone away, and anyone caught sneaking a peek is buying everybody else a round.

I will never understand the people filming at a concert.  Especially if they are filming a big screen at a concert.  Louis is right, you’re never going to actually watch that.  People throw it up on facebook or twitter or whatever else and just seek the attention that they were there.  The funny thing is, I actually employ my phone with my gopro setup to do a lot of filming.  Mostly fishing and underwater videos, mahi on the line, sharks bumping against the lens, that sort of thing.  I don’t throw them up on youtube, I don’t put them on facebook, I share them face to face with somebody who couldn’t have been there with me.

Why?  Because nothing starts a conversation off like showing somebody a video of a big, toothy critter about six inches away from the camera.  Or of hauling in tuna in twelve foot rollers some twenty six miles offshore as lightning cracks overhead and waterspouts kick up around the boat. Maybe the one video I wish I’d posted somewhere because I lost it when I accidentally wiped the flash card.

You don’t get that by posting it on facebook or youtube.  Sure, you’d get some likes. Maybe some PETA vegans blowing up the comment section.  But not a conversation.

I think that smartphones are every bit as addictive as maybe even heroin.  There are people who can’t live without it, as described in both videos. They practically live through the device, more attached to it than the world and people around them.  Maybe it is to fill some sort of lonely void as Louis seems to think.  I find it at least equally plausible that it is more a vanity issue.  People get addicted to the “likes”, to the thumbs ups on youtube, to more tweets in their direction.  If tweets in their direction is even a thing, I don’t know, all I’ve ever used it for before this class was when I heard about sports news via some insider.  Even then, I wasn’t actually going to twitter, it’s just where the info first broke.

Moving on to the social media log assignment, it didn’t really take me very long to get a baseline reading.  I don’t ever use my facebook, which is the one social media thing I even have an account for.  I do a tiny bit of texting, if that counts.  Today it was to let my one friend know to head out to meet at the gym, and to another that he isn’t going to stop being pre diabetic by sleeping instead of deadlifting. Another to let a different friend know that, while I let his dog out, he did a bit of a roll through mud while chasing a soccer ball and is probably going to need a bath.  Sorry, Matt, I did the best I could with the towel by the door.

I’m sure that there are people who would share all of this on facebook or instagram or something else.  I see them snapping selfies after two reps, hashtag it with a #swole, and then sit there for another few minutes clicking the pretend cows before leaving and acting like they actually accomplished something.  Arnold has a great term for cellphones in a gym.  “Mickey mouse stuff.”  I’d actually go a bit further and say that applies to just about any situation.  If you’re doing something that should require your full attention, or something amazing like jumping out of a plane, documenting it on your cell should be the last thing on your mind.  To be honest a lot of fishing trips I don’t even remember to turn my gopro on, if I even remembered to charge it, or even pack it.  If you read my first post this week, you’ll note that I don’t even bother uploading these videos anywhere.

I even know a guy who lost his chance at a once in a lifetime trophy deer because he was fiddling trying to do a snapchat, dropped it, and had the buck run off on him.  He feels a bit different about trying something like that now.

It’s a real conflict for me to manage all of this.  I know that social media is basically required for a modern business to actually thrive.  Not because it is really some necessary thing, but because there are billions of phonezombies out there who pay in the same cash everybody else does.  Sure, it has a few other uses, making announcements easier to spread and such.  For the most part, though, it’s just another form of advertisement spam.

All the while I’m actually perfectly content with not uploading my daily life to the web.  If I want to know what somebody else is doing, I’ll usually call or at minimum text.  Maybe an email if it is a bit long winded. I only use these as tools in the cases where an actual face to face conversation isn’t possible, usually because of distance or time.

Concerning my social media experiment, I am actually, for a 24 hour period, going to attempt to use my phone as much as my peers.  I’ll log in to my facebook, I’ll read whatever inane information people have slathered all over, I’ll maybe even confirm those dozens of people I’ve met who send me a friend request after.  I’m writing this little part ahead of time as a way to give my predictions as well.

I have little doubt that I’m going to hate it.  Likely for all of the same reasons I stopped using any social media in the first place.

Now, pop out the SD Card from your GoPro.

Then, put the SD Card into the slot on the card reader.

Once inserted, connect the SD Card to Mac using USB.

After that, click on the ‘Finder App’ to open it.

Tap on the ‘Untitled’ option located in the left panel of the screen. In case, if your SD Card contains a name other than ‘Untitled,’ you need to hit on that name.

Click-twice ‘DCIM’ folder.

Again, double-tap on the ‘101GOPRO’ folder.

Right-press or tap two fingers on any file you wish to copy. In case, if users want to copy more than one file, long-press the Command’ key while choosing files users want to transfer.

Tap your two fingers on one of the chosen files and press ‘Copy X Items’ option.

Inside the ‘Finder App’ go to the location which you wish to copy the files to.

Right-press and choose ‘Paste x items option.

Finally, your all files which you want to copy are successfully copied.

Once you successfully copied the files, ensure that you have removed the SD card from your Mac.

GoPro Quick Method

Well, GoPro offers their own solutions which are known as Quick/Desktop. This free software is installed in the same way you download or install any other application on the Mac. For this, you just need to download the files and double-tap on that files to start the installation process. Install the GoPro on your Mac, after that follow the below given steps to import all your files. Here how to do it:

Firstly, connect your GoPro Camera to your Mac and enable the camera.

After that, tap on the ‘LaunchPad on your Mac Dock.

Now, type ‘quick’ and hit the ‘GoPro Quick’ launcher on the screen.

Click on the ‘Sign In’ tab and enter your Username and password to log into GoPro account.

Press the ‘Import Files’ option.

Finally, wait until the importing process is completed.

Drones have been in existence for as long as I’ve known through our media networks and have evolved in changing life as we know it for the better whether it be through visual appeal, protection, maintenance and furthering breakthrough research. They will remain around three months at a time. It is said that this project will take flight within the next 10 years with the first successful test flight already a huge success with more than 90 minutes over northern Arizona. As an environmentalist myself it gives me pride in knowing that drones are also used to maintain wildlife conservation. Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts have used camouflaged drones to monitor the health of humpback whales off the coast of Cape Cod, even capturing from their blowholes breath samples flush with DNA that can be analyzed for wildlife studies. But recently, the tech’s most profound contribution to wildlife protection may be happening in Africa, where drones are policing vast tracts of land to catch poachers hunting rhinos and elephants. The horns and tusks of those animals can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars from Asian crime syndicates. Instead of having park rangers go out after dark to try to catch the heavily armed bandits, drone pilots patrol the targeted areas with their aircraft, collecting data used to predict the poachers’ movements protecting many of our wildlife for further generations to come.

MongoDB at… last… Just kidding. We are not there yet. Soon we should have this up and running in TableauDesktop. We hope. Connecting an IP to MongoDB is our next step.

BTW Bro: Don’t get blown away that you will need to install drivers to connect to MongoDB. I figured I would tell you now that it’s standard practice to download and install drivers to connect to… practically every database under the sun, son.

This demo has two different directions, depending on what you want to do! Are you going to let anyone access your Cluster? Or are you going to just allow one or two IPs to connect to your instance?

Not sure how to get your IP address?

BroTip: Ask your client to use, www.ipchicken.com, it should work. Get that IP, plug it in, and follow these steps!

Is your MongoDB Atlas public facing or not public facing? MongoDB Atlas has a bunch of popups, not exactly user-friendly, and we will just focus on one for this tutorial.

TLDR: You, as a person, only need to focus on one thing at a time to accomplish most things in technology. Today, we will pick the IP Whitelist or Allow all options. Also, in case you’re messing around or accidentally make some clicks — I show how to delete access too. You really can’t go wrong at this point — it’s okay to play around with this software to understand what is happening. You don’t have any proprietary data uploaded at this point, you’re safe to make a mistake and at the end — I’m showing you how to get rid of the mistakes.

Chances are, you’re not connecting an app because you’re following along to my droning on about this like a super-cool-dude.

Okay, perfect, excellent. Ready to begin?

Giving access to your MongoDB Atlas Clusters.

Giving access is quick and easy, the user experience is a little wonky, but follow along and get through this. It’s the most important step when seeking to generate a cloud data source. Access to your MongoDB Atlas Cluster is necessary to offer end users a reporting data hub.

Go ahead and click show me how, and dive into the next menu. If you lost the popup, you’re clicking too much. Click Connect on the overview tab. And stop clicking so much ;). Mr/Mrs.FastClickerMcClickySon.

Allow access from anywhere on MongoDB?

Are you eager to make this a public data source? Yes or No?

Follow along, depending on your choices, and don’t make your company data public facing.

If you want it public facing, click ALLOW ACCESS FROM ANYWHERE.

Allow access anywhere looks funky after you select this button, it seems as if it’s not going to take. So from me to you. It takes. And they confirm this to you VIA email. For Gmail.com users, check your UPDATE tab.

After you submit it. It looks like 0.0.0.0/0 whatever, you get an email, and that’s all you need to get it public facing. Easy enough, right? You haven’t done any programming and you’ve generated a 3 node cluster.

If you don’t want MongoDB Atlas public facing…

Whitelist — MongoDB Atlas only allows client connections to the cluster from entries in the project’s whitelist. To connect, you must add an entry to the whitelist. To set up the whitelist for the project, see Add Entries to the Whitelist.

To add to the whitelist, click CONNECT, this is also the option to add your personal IP or Allow Access from Anywhere.

If you didn’t mean to add your IP or accidentally did your Allow Access from Anywhere button, you can erase it pretty quickly. Regrettably, you can’t find that from the ‘connect’ button above.

Deleting IP’s or Allow Access from Anywhere from MongoDB Atlas.

You’re probably on the Overview tab. To remove your IP, someone else’s IP, or remove the Allow Access 0.0.0.0 thingy… You need to follow along.

Click Security.

Click IP Whitelist.

Find the IP you wish to DELETE.

Under Actions, click DELETE.

Hopefully, by now you’re comfortable with some of the security functions on your MongoDB Atlas clusters.

To put it simply: Without giving the IP address access, your entire installation is similar to a website without any SEO linkage pointing at it. It’s a cluster of coolness — in the middle of nowhere. Sitting on an AWS instance without any users. So, hopefully, this little paragraph warns you that without ADD IP ADDRESS….

10 things in tech you need to know today

Good morning! Here is the tech news you need to know this Tuesday.

1. Facebook is putting an end to M, an ambitious digital assistant product unveiled two years ago that was supposed to be the company's answer to Apple's Siri and Google's Assistant. M, which was first announced in August 2015, used a mixture of artificial intelligence and human "trainers," to answer Facebook user's questions in the Messenger app.

2. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich publicly addressed the company's big chip vulnerabilities, which were identified by Google last week. These vulnerabilities could make it possible for a hacker to access sensitive information, like photos or passwords, from almost every PC, phone, and tablet. He said the response has been "remarkable".

3. Tony Fadell, the co-creator of the iPod and iPhone, has publicly criticised Apple and other Silicon Valley firms for their role in device addiction. He argued that adults and children alike are slaves to their phones and social media.

4. GoPro is cutting more than 250 jobs, bringing its global workforce to less than 1,000. Demand for the Hero5 model was soft during the holiday season, GoPro CEO said in a statement.

5. A worker at a factory in China operated by iPhone maker Foxconn died after jumping from a window, according to a statement from China Labour Watch, a US-based activist organisation, which cited information from employees. Ming Li was a dispatch worker from an agency at the factory in Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan province. He lived at the factory, one of the company's largest in China.

6. Facebook struck a deal with Sony's music division to let users share music videos. As more and more Facebook users have included music or videos in their posts in recent years, the platform has required users to take down posts using infringing content.

7. Toyota and Pizza Hut are teaming up to make self-driving cars that could deliver pizza. Toyota revealed the e-Palette, an autonomous concept vehicle, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

8. Apple will be one of the largest beneficiaries from President Donald Trump's tax overhaul because as much as $24 billion (£18 billion) could be freed up due to the lowered corporate tax rate, UBS Analyst Steven Milunovich said. Milunovich says that Apple has already been factoring in the lowered statutory US corporate tax rate of 25% — as proposed in President Donald Trump's tax overhaul — in its target capital structure, which determines how the company finances its operations and growth.

9. TransferWise is quietly launching its new "borderless" accounts and linked debit card to just 1,000 consumers. TransferWise first announced the "borderless" account, which lets people hold up to 28 currencies through one account, last May. It followed on from a similar product launched by rival international currency exchange WorldFirst.

10. Salesforce employees moved in to their new home in the recently-erected Salesforce Tower on Monday. At 1,070 feet and 61-stories high, Salesforce Tower is the biggest building in San Francisco.

Facebook

Facebook for Android is quite similar to what you'd find on Facebook.com, but catered to smartphones. Share photos from your Android gallery, post updates on your wall, comment on the posts of your Facebook friends, share links and other media, and much more with the free app. The app is under constant tweaking, with additions such as editing posts and comments continuously being added. The experience wouldn't be complete without the Facebook Messenger app, which handles Facebook's chat and call features.

Memrise

A 2017 Google Play Awards winner, language learning app Memrise uses a variety of tools to help users pick up basic conversational fluency with a number of languages, such as Spanish, Japanese and French. Podcasting platform CastBoxcombines a clean and navigable interface, a good selection of podcasts, and powerful podcast audio searching to deliver an excellent mobile podcatcher. Users can sign in with Gmail, Facebook, or Twitter, and then search and subscribe to podcasts, download episodes for offline listening and sync their subscriptions across multiple devices. It’s great for anyone who routinely has to pay out or collect from various sources — or even for divvying up a restaurant tab. With the app’s data encryption protecting your financial information, you’ll have no worries about security.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a fantastic online resource for a variety of interests and hobbies, with users able to pin or save images, links, and other resources to topic-related interest boards. How to connect a windows PC or Android phone to the camera and transfer the files.

1. Set the camera to WiFi mode by turn it on and hold OK button on the top until it says waiting for connection.

Phone:

Get the app iSmart to connect the camera.

1. Change Wifi connection for the phone, choose a Wifi called Actioncam

2. Start the app

3. When asked for password use: “1234567890″ now 

The app can control the camera and transfer files to the phone.

Windows

Install a FTP transfer app fx  FileZilla.

1. Change Wifi connection for the PC choose Wifi called Actioncam and  use password: “1234567890″

2. Start the FTP transfer app (FileZilla)

3. Server =  192.168.1.1, User: “root”, Password, “1234567890″, Port is blank.

4. Connect to the server

5. The file folders are now shown and you can transfer for your PC.

Enhancing the video with Photoshop

Open the video file from the camera, right click the layer with video and choose convert to Smart object. Now you can use lens correction and other filters.

Lens correction: Choose GoPro as camera and one of the types fx Black+. This will straighten horisontal and vertical lines especially at the edges of the picture, bur also crops the picture a bit.

Use auto on colors, contrast this will improve the video a lot.
