i know there's many possible reasons why people do this but whenever people post like a bunch of different drawings in one sketchdump i'm like woah hold on... give them room to breathe... each of these deserves its own frame and space in the gallery....

it kinda makes sense when they're closely-related explorations of the same topic but when they r different concepts or characters or esp moods i'm like wait! i have different things to say about each one! i want to admire and reblog each one separately with discrete tag commentaries!!

blonde or brown?

i woke up from my ill-advised late afternoon nap to see the discord girlies were talking about buck's hair colour and insisting it's brown. so i had to set the record straight

first things first: to judge the true colour of your hair, it needs to be dry and free from product (unless it dries with your hair like certain oils and serums, but let's not get into that right now) and you need to look at it under a light - natural light preferably, but artificial will do trick. and obviously, it needs to be virgin hair that's not been dyed.

(yes, some charts go up to 11 and 12, but let's stay away from bleach-blonde shades for the purposes of this post, yes?)

so i'm trying to find pictures of oliver stark in a setting with good lighting to match his level with the chart above

not sure what year this is from, google credits "2019 Arnold Jerocki" (it does look like s2-s3 buck?)

but this one's definitely recent (7x04 which was filmed in 2024!)

and the most recent BTS of oliver from that video abc posted on instagram (i took a screenshot from this gifset by @rylivers)

first photo (from 2019) looks like a level 8: blonde

second photo i would say is level 7: medium blonde. (at most it's level 6: dark blonde)

third photoset: this one i'm including to show the difference where the sun is hitting the hair vs when it's not. overall it looks like his current hair is at the 6-7 level.

is it possible that oliver has been dyeing his hair for some time to hide greys? they're visible in this (zoomed in) pic (from his instagram)

i cant find any other photo where you can see the greys, so i'm inclined to believe the hair is being dyed to cover it. and not sure if this is a personal choice or something the hair&makeup department are instructed to do to keep him looking young (because god forbid a 32 year old has greys, i guess?! welcome to TV land). also, i'm not a professional colourist, but they may have gone a level or two darker to cover the greys.

in conclusion,

oliver's - and therefore buck's - natural hair would be classed as blond. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Just wanna share some art exporting tips that I’ve found useful. I use Clip specifically, but I’m sure other programs probably have similar functions. You can always try and google it for your art program.

If your file is too big, and it has a full background, you can:

Export (Single Layer) => JPEG => OK on the first pop up.

Now you should see your image preview. There is an option below that that says Quality followed by a number. Underneath that is the file size. Adjust the quality until your file size is small enough.

It still artifacts the image a bit, especially if you’re way over file size, but it will give you precise control over have much you reduce the file size by, and you also won’t have to download.

If your image is too big, or if you do small scale pixel art:

Edit => Change Image Resolution

If you are over 8000 x 8000 px, grab either your height or width, whichever is largest, and change it to 8000 px. The other number will automatically adjust itself. Again, some artifacting is to be expected.

Alternatively, if you do pixel art and your art is very small, click scale. You can change the scale number as needed, I like to make at least one of my sides around 4000 px. This way, when you save and upload your piece, your pixel art won’t be tiny, and it won’t become blurry when it’s zoomed in on or when they show it off on discord or something or other. All your details will be crisp, and the receiver can adjust the size as they desire.

The pink, red rose or the grumpy crown frog ? Love or duty ? Of new beginnings and of choices ! Go Wille !!!

So we have all seen the cute Snow Globe frog, so much drama around it. But have you seen its counterpart, the rose Snow Globe in Simon's house ? Let's partly unpack these metaphors, it's fascinating ! I'm in awe of the writers of this cute addictive show. So the grumpy frog represents duty, the lineage of the royal functions (given to Eric by his grandpa and then given to Wille by Eric). Courtesy of TVM (TV microscopic, go check the blog on substack, it's amazing, phenomenal) who reminds in one of the articles (about "negative space" ? ) that the frog can only turn into a prince if he's kissed. The frog can only be "awakened", transformed, be given his real shape by love. Plus, the frog is an aquatic animal (go check the water metaphor in YR on TVM's blog) but he is also terrestrian as an amphibian. There is a poster of a frog in Wille's room (courtesy of Molly who saw it and of the "kingdom", a group of YR fans with whom, I discuss YR and TVM's analysis). So the choice stands between, romantic love, the rose Snow Globe on Simon's table, at home, in his living-room, and heavy duty. But the show is quite positive about the outcome (it offers hope at least). The bubble of the grumpy crown frog with all its fake splendor (the glitter) will have to be brutally opened. It has to fall from its height. And under whose touch the frog could access the world of the rose, of romantic love ? Under Simon's touch (cf. the way he touches the frog before the love scene of Ep. 5, S2). The rose in Simon's Snow Globe is shown at two very symbolic moments. First in ep. 4 s. 1 just after the scene when Wille becomes the crown prince. Simon watches the televised memorial the day of Eric's burial. And the second time is just after the palace scene when Wille is asked to deny his participation in the video. He has to act according to Kristina's view of his duty. But the alternative comes in the next scene, holy love, the rose near these lit candles on the table of Simon's house. And apart from this obvious parallel between the two opposite globes, the show has a very subtle way to tell us that there is a choice to be made. The broken bubble of the grumpy crown frog that Simon touches with his finger is set on two books. If you zoom, you can read the title of one of the books (janusstenen) = the janus' stone. So Janus is the bifrons god. He has two faces and symbolises new beginnings, the choice between the past and the future, doors, gates. So Wilhelm, you know what to do !! (dixit google). It's janus who gave the month that begins the year "january". What better moment to have a look at this ? What's your take on this ?

PS, let's note that the rose symbolises many things but another interesting symbolism (apart from romantic love) which is cohesive to the show is that the rose also refers to socialism. And Simon is the "socialist" who sneers on the one who receives the most on welfare ! Socialism vs royalty ?

iPhone6s max zoom vs Galaxy S20 FE max zoom (pfff) and I figured out why the Samsung photo earlier looked so different from the iPhone photo. It was set to .5 zoom. Clicking the correct button made a much more normal looking photo. The Galaxy's 1x zoom is still farther back than the iPhone's.

I don't have any apps or anything on the Galaxy, just photos and the regular Google stuff which I haven't logged into at all. No need.

tl; dr: Staged 2 is a unique and excellent addition to Staged 1. The added meta textual layer of the other celebrities breaking down their relationship based on Staged 1 allows for a lot of “hiding behind my hands so embarrassed” moments, but also by pitting them against each other, it reveals their actual love for each other through the bickering. Season 1 on its own is a nice vignette of its time but season 2 with it adds a tension and intimacy that really takes both over the top

Kinda dreading watching Staged 3 since it seems like people overwhelmingly like it less than the other two because of the loss of the Zoom format and constant arguing, but I’m already in this far deep so I’ll stick the landing

Specifically-specifically, the wings... okay I know that probably doesn't make much sense, but the context is that I learned that wing shape heavily influence how a creature (race? human? person?) flys through the environment. I can't explain it much more, but, in short, what are the wing shapes? Are they one type of wing throughout all or do they differ based on what each culture would have been (since they're, uh, extinct kinda? In your world anyways)? Shape? Size? Any other features? Wow, this a VERY interesting question! And I have a spectacularly long answer for you! (I also included a few pictures at the bottom of this post of the very specific anatomy a Falkry has -- the art is not mine, but it perfectly shows the skeletal and muscular structure of Falkry wings, also showing how the muscles and bone structure move and shift during flight which I thought might be helpful. You might have to zoom in though to read all the descriptive writing explaining each muscle and its purpose)

Now on to the explanation: You are absolutely correct in that wing shape heavily influences how creatures fly. And yes, there are different wing types among Falkry. BUT, they do not differ too greatly -- the differences are more subtle. For example, no Falkry has short-flight-type wings (shorter and stubbier meant for short bursts of flight in real-life birds rather than gliding/soaring - like chickens and turkeys). They always have larger, broader wings like eagles to be able to stay airborne, especially since they are human-sized (which means big wings to get them in the air).

To perhaps word it better, the differences I mentioned are more like hawk vs falcon-type wings (hawks have broad wings, falcons have thin and narrow ones for better maneuverability, but there are a ton of closer similarities between those two types than for hawk-shaped wings vs chicken-shaped wings. Make sense?)

A Falkry's genetics determine a lot about wing shape & structure. Shadow, for example, has wings that are powerful but slightly slimmer/more tapered and narrow than most other Falkry (genetic anomaly that works to her advantage). Her wing shape is a cross between hawk & falcon-types. She is a super fast flier because of this, and can out-fly anyone she races. She also has elite aerial maneuverability because of her falcon-like wings and can make sharp twists, turns, and abrupt changes of direction in the air that most other Falkry would have a hard time doing.

It means she's good at dodging & weaving through tight spaces and has a significant evasive advantage in aerial training combat against Falkry with broader wings who can't make those sharp twists she can and are slower to make turns.

But Falkry with bigger, wider wings than Shadow, on the other hand, would have an advantage in long-distance flight & journeys because they would have an easier time soaring and gliding on air currents, conserving energy by avoiding unnecessary flapping. Each wing-type helps in different ways, and each has its advantages & disadvantages.

Physical fitness has a lot to do with things too. For example, a Falkry with broad wings (designed for soaring) might still be able to beat someone with shorter and narrower ones (designed for speed) in a race if their muscles are stronger. But Shadow in particular is very physically active, even when's she's not punching people's noses in (LOL), and so she has a lot of built up endurance and raw power, along with loads of flight experience and skill on her side which is part of what makes her so dangerous.

I live in the UK, and it was an NHS program recommended to me by my GP. If you're also in the UK then all I can say is to ask your doctor about it.

We had a series of six zoom meetings with two medical professionals and a bunch of us Long Covid people. One general doctor and one therapist. Kind of like a group therapy kind of thing?

We got an information packet thing that we went through and filled out over the course of the meetings. I'm afraid it's been over a year since then though so it's probably been thrown out. 😔

What I do remember is that we did like, a daily time sheet, logging our periods of activity. The categories were:

Sleep (sleep)

High activity (generally any like, physical activities)

Low activity (more low-key activities, including solely mental ones like puzzles, video games, anything making you Think About Stuff)

Rest (Do Nothing/Think Nothing time)

The idea was that we were trying to identify our own baselines for activity - the amount of stuff we could do without triggering post-exertional malaise. Also if we were actually getting enough rest throughout the day where we weren't actively using energy!

If you figure out your baseline, then you can head off getting into a 'peaks and troughs' pattern of overstretch -> crash -> feel better -> overstretch -> crash.

For rest, we were taught a variety of different relaxation and meditation techniques in the hopes that at least one of them might resonate with us. 'Rest' time doesn't have to be in like, solid blocks! They actually recommended to like, take breaks from whatever we might be doing maybe every 20 minutes or half hour and then just spend 5 minutes chilling, haha.

All of this is easier said than done of course. I have ADHD so turning my brain off for rest is uhhh Not Easy lmao.

How do I get into screenwriting as a beginner

Hi anon, this is a great question! One that also has a bit of a long answer lol

There's honestly a lot of ways you get your start into screenwriting, there definitely isn't one traditional way. The first one is of course through formal study at film school. This is beneficial because you get the knowledge of how to start off writing, what the fundamentals of the craft are, basic genre conventions of whatever you plan to write, script structure etc. You also get industry knowledge from experts, i.e. what producers are looking for when they read a script and why that's important to know when you're writing. You also get to collaborate with your fellow students and really get inspiration from each other firsthand. Naturally, this option isn't always feasible, so you can try a few other things (that said, I'm sure there's great programs and scholarships or something, I'm not really sure how the US system works, assuming that's where you're from!)

YouTube is your best friend! You can definitely type in "how to become a screenwriter" and get a lot of videos on how to start, the basic structure of scripts e.g. film vs TV formatting. You even have a lot of YouTubers that discuss film and how genre conventions inform the writing.

There's also great resources on The Script Lab and Screencraft on how to start and how to keep momentum on what you're working on. There's also ScreenwritingU which does free Zoom classes every now and then, this however you do need to come to it with basic knowledge of scripts and genre before you do this, because these classes are really more about how to further yourself and capitalise on your craft. They do courses as well, like 10 week courses on a specific topic with modules, but these can be quite expensive. That said, they have payment plans if you feel you can do it down the road.

There's plenty of podcasts and books to read as well. I think definitely give The Anatomy of Story and The Anatomy of Genres by John Truby a read, it's good information to keep handy and check in with when you're unsure if you're on the right track. Story: Style, Structure, Substance, and the Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKee is also pretty essential. You could give Save The Cat a flick through for the absolute basics, but it's not really a big deal like some people make it out to be.

ALSO - read as many scripts of movies and shows you love! There's plenty that are available after a quick google search!

So it really doesn't matter whether you go to film school or you're self taught, as long as you keep up with your writing and load yourself with the knowledge of the genres you want to write for.

newcomer here but what's the deal with edward creel? he's never mentioned in the show, right?

HELLO AND WELCOME, ANON!!! Fantastic question, I'm always so happy to see people getting interested in the Edward stuff! :DD And also, I'm still going to answer all of this here (and I'm going to talk about TFS too, because that's something I don't talk about in the video because it was made pre-TFS), but I do also have a youtube video with a basic explanation of Edward! So, Edward Creel is not verbally mentioned in the show- but he IS in the show! Like, the name "Edward Creel," does very much appear in the show, on our screens. You can see it in the Indianapolis Gazette article about the Creel murders when Nancy and Robin are reading the articles in the library:

(it's also clearer if you go and watch netflix in HD on your phone & zoom in- unfortunately, in order to screenshot it, I have to use google chrome on PC & netflix caps the quality on google chrome specifically because of chrome's ability to bypass their anti-screenshot stuff, hence why the screenshot looks fairly blurry, but it's actually much, much clearer on the screen when you watch the show at a higher quality. That's why I'm able to accurately read the papers even though my screenshots are blurry/almost illegible sometimes-it's because I'm actually reading them off of the HD version on my phone most of the time.) Basically, there's three different news articles about the Creel murders that we see during that Nancy and Robin library scene- the Roane Daily Citizen, the Indianapolis Gazette, and the Weekly Watcher. The Roane Daily Citizen is too far away for us to read any of it, unfortunately, so we don't know what's in there. But then, when it comes to the Indianapolis Gazette, we can read it & see that it talks about Edward Creel- and it also says that Edward's father is Victor, his sister is Virginia, and his mother is Alice. And then in the Weekly Watcher, Edward Creel is absent, and instead, it talks about Henry Creel, his sister, Alice, his father, Victor, and his mother, Virginia. So, not only do we have the Edward vs Henry thing in these papers, but Virginia and Alice's roles in the family have been swapped (and there's a ton of other differences too, like Victor's age changing, and the fact that according to the Edward paper, the Creels lived in Hawkins for two years and moved there in 1959, whereas with Henry, the Creels moved there in 1959, and lived there very briefly prior to the murders- you can check out posts like this post, this post, and this post for more information regarding the differences between the Edward paper vs the Henry paper)! And while you might be thinking that Edward's name in the paper is just a typo, keep in mind that: a.) The ST team is so insanely meticulous about props (the duffers had to personally approve the *shape of el's bloodstains on her gown during NINA*) and you can go and read some of the alternate versions of the articles that didn't make it into the show- so, they put enough time and effort and thought into it to have multiple, extremely detailed custom articles & to go through multiple interactions of it. b.) There's tons of other "Edward" references outside of the paper- the name "Edward" is bolded on the S4 movie inspo board, Eddie "Edward" Munson is constantly delivering Edward Creel subtext (if you want an easy rundown of how Eddie Munson delivers Edward Creel subtext, I talk about it in that Edward Creel youtube video), as well as 9324737984 other things that I’ve posted about! and c.) Some of the newspaper articles in The First Shadow also align with the Edward articles- like I talked about in this post, we get a glimpse of an article that seems to talk about Virginia as the daughter of the Creel family and Alice as the mother, the exact same family dynamic that's present in Edward's newspaper, but not in Henry's paper.

So, to answer your main question/"what's the deal with Edward Creel?"- we don't entirely know what his deal is in-universe, but some options are that Edward might be Henry's naturally-occurring alternate timeline counterpart, like a Twinner, he might be some sort of long-lost twin, he might also be the result of some sort of lab experiment/cloning experiment- or Henry might be the result of that, after all, basically everything happened to Edward first- he moved to Hawkins two years before Henry did, and his Creel murders happened a few days before Henry’s Creel murders. So, sometimes it feels like Edward might be the original Creel boy, but who knows!

However, regardless of his still-mysterious origins, I do also think that he’s likely Vecna (and then there’s also all of the weird Brenner is Vecna stuff/the idea of a Brenner-Edward or Brenner-Henry merge like the merge in The Fly, but that’s a whole big topic for another time), because as mentioned earlier, I think that Eddie “Edward” Munson is being used to deliver subtext about Edward Creel, and one of Eddie Munson’s main things is that because he’s the DM for the Hellfire DND game, he “is” Vecna because he plays as Vecna in the DND game- but Eddie Munson isn’t the “real,” Vecna, instead, I think that Eddie “Edward” Munson “being” the fictional Vecna in DND is delivering the subtext that Edward Creel is the real Vecna. But this is also another topic that I go through in that video I linked, so there’s a lengthier explanation of this there.

And now, this also all ties to Mike/the Wheelers (and if you’ve seen stuff talking about “The Creelers,” floating around, this is what that’s referring to), because I think that Karen Wheeler is a Creel- but not Alice Creel.

Instead, I think she’s Virginia Creel- but not Henry’s mother, Virginia, instead, I think she’s Edward’s sister, Virginia. You can check out this post, this post, this post, and this post for more information regarding Virginia and Karen, but long story short, we don’t know what happened to the daughter version of Virginia from the Edward timeline- we have no idea if she died, we don’t know how old she was, we don’t even know her hair colour or eye colour. There’s so much room there for Karen to be that daughter version of Virginia, without the issues that are present when it comes to the idea of her being Alice- issues like Alice’s eye colour not being the same as Karen’s eye colour (but Karen’s eye colour IS the same as Mother Virginia Creel’s eye colour, and Daughter Virginia may also have had those same brown eyes/this may be another point in favour of Karen being Daughter Virginia), or Alice’s death.

This would also mean that Edward Creel is Mike’s uncle- and it may explain the weird connection that exists between Vecna and the Wheelers (his whole thing with Nancy & showing her the vision of her family), because if Edward is Vecna, Karen is Daughter Virginia, then Holly, Nancy, and Mike are all Vecna’s nieces/nephew.

And then, there’s also The First Shadow’s Edward references and the fact that "Henry" in TFS keeps having to remind himself that his name is Henry (he keeps repeating "I'm normal, I'm Henry Creel"), and is two years older than he should be (TFS Henry is 14, whereas in-show Henry is 12 according to the Weekly Watcher), which then aligns suspiciously well with Edward having moved to Hawkins two years before Henry/possibly being two years older that Henry (we never get a confirmed age for Edward), especially considering the Edward references in TFS, such as a song about a guy named Edward being referenced right before Walter asks TFS "Henry" who he is. so a couple people have mentioned the Marion map that Hawkins is based off of, and so i figured i’d share how i found it in the first place:

i was on my quest to vectorize Hawkins map and getting fed up with “what is road vs what is not road” and started paying attention to the information surrounding the map, in case there was maybe a key that made more sense to the one i was already working off of. there wasn’t. but there WAS an interesting bit of text that said Indiana - Grant Co. 7.5 minute series (topographic)

and i thought hmmm that might get me somewhere. so i googled it and found this neat website FULL OF MAPS. there are hundreds of em. There are 15, 30, and 7.5 minute maps, so that narrowed it down some. but not a lot, cuz there are still hundreds of 7.5 minute maps.

so i checked my Hawkins map again, and noticed a bit of info that said it was dated 1960, field checked 1961. it also mentions datum of 1927 but i kind of ignored that cuz what’s the point. there’s also datum of 1983 which i unfortunately did not pay attention to because i assumed the years in question would continue moving backwards. oops.

anyway, i started tabbing every single 7.5 map that mentioned 1960 or 1961, and, well, i think i got to california (not that california) (it borders michigan and indiana, but on the scanned map “MICH” is crossed out in favour of “IND”) before realizing it was a lost cause. Indiana has a lot of maps. good for them.

but since the map has given me good clues so far, i checked again.

up in the top left corner it said Somerset. and then in the right corner it said Mount Etna. and then the bottom left and right said Point Isabel and Gas City, respectively.

so i google mapped Somerset, Indiana, and sure enough, there was a Mount Etna nearby, and below the two of them there’s a city called MARION above Point Isabel and Gas City.

so i ctrl+f’d Marion aaaand:

so ta-daa, that’s how i found Marion. the map is from 1960, reviewed in 61. The 1983 bit from Hawkins isn’t there on the Marion map, so I figure they added that bit in for the sake of the show.
